Its a flavor enhancer. Actually, its naturally occurring, but its when we add it that there are problems. That's what makes food taste good. That's why its in processed foods or things like hamburger helper. Goya seasonings first ingredient is MSG. So, if the place uses Goya seasonings, which is what makes chicken taste really good, they are putting MSG on it. That's what my friend used in her chicken and it made the chicken get a pink color from the other seasonings in the mixture. MSG is the first ingredient. I went along when my husband was doing some agricultural consulting in mountain villages in Mexico. One of the homes was fixing us breakfast of eggs and tortillas. I watched the mother put it on our eggs. Later, I had a migraine. Most Asian restaurants don't use it anymore since so many people ask that it not be put in food. But, every so often I run into it. The reason we associate it with Asian food is because it was first produced by an Asian company that also has recently come up with pink slime. If your mother ever used meat tenderizer, its MSG. Its also in Miracle Whip salad dressing as food starch modified and its in ranch salad dressing. Some of the names to look for include: food starch modified and texturized vegetable protein. I'm careful if I see natural flavors listed since MSG is a natural flavor.

I get migraines, too. I go to sleep and then can't wake up. I also have noticed that the migraines also include a strange sensation like I'm swelling up. For me drinking lots of water and tea helps flush it out of my system. I used to notice that after having a reaction, I would crave carbs and so eating a carb heavy meal afterwards seemed to help me.

All my life I would get headaches and feel terrible at every family holiday and family gathering. I never could figure out why until I learned about MSG. My husband and I found a little book about it. We made changes in our food and eating and I saw an improvement immediately.

I'm allergic to MSG. I found out when we were first married, so my husband is very aware of the foods that have MSG or an ingredient that is the same. One thing we learned is that it builds up in a person's system and so, if you eat all processed foods for a time, you have a huge build up. If you exercise caution and don't eat it, you can eat a little without a problem. Twenty plus years ago people looked at you funny if you didn't eat some foods because of MSG. Now, most people don't even notice. So, I don't talk about it much. But, I can tell if I ate something at a potluck or in a restaurant. I get the headache, fatigue and other symptoms. Last year I ate with co-workers at a Mexican restaurant and they were raving about a dish and the waiter told them it had a secret ingredient. I ate something else that I thought would be okay. Well, that afternoon I got sick. On the way home it hit me what the secret ingredient was. Its a flavoring that is used in a lot of Hispanic cooking and the first ingredient is MSG. The reason I knew about the flavoring was a friend in grad school who was Hispanic made the most wonderful chicken, and that was the ingredient. I had to quit eating her chicken. My co-workers hadn't guessed that I am allergic and that MSG can also found in Mexican cooking. I got to explain to them why I don't eat out much and why I eat mostly clean both at home and why away from home I'm pretty picky about what I eat.

Glad you are able to go along. My husband is always looking for ways to save money and make meals quickly. This usually has him looking at the cheap macaroni and cheese in the box and fatty hamburger to make burgers.

I either go on my own now or go together. Last weekend we went together and I felt like the "mom". As he tried to put things in the cart, I had to say things like "No. That is not good for us" or "No, we don't keep that stuff in the house" emoticon

This will be good for him, too. Even if he doesn't want to lose the weight, all the unreadable stuff that is in the prepared food can't be good for any of us!

No fad diets for me!

No one said it'll be easy. It may be really hard. Let's do it right and make it a new lifestyle.

Since my spinal surgery last year has made my husband think he can shop better than me. He has bought nothing but unhealthy foods. He thinks eating prepared food is healthy and when I bring up what is in the these prepackaged foods he gets mad and says they won't hurt you. He even says if I want to lose weight I need to skip a meal.

Well, I am now making out the list and sometimes I go shopping with him to make sure we get what we need. We are eating healthier and now I have found out I'm allergic to MSG we have to read all the labels to make sure it's not in the foods we buy.

We are both learning to buy the right foods and to become healthier eaters.
