My long term goals are to keep on a schedule for going to sleep and getting up. I am also going to keep using my sleep helps - hot bath, yoga, and music.

I slept deeply last night and past 8 hours. But I am very sick right now with another flareup. This again leads me to believe that I only need a few hours sleep when I am having a healthy night.

I got 8 hours last night..felt amazing! I notice that my body seems to want to wake up around 8AM, no matter what time I go to sleep. That's really interesting to me, since work starts at 7:30AM; I'm hoping that with a little more time (and better sleep habits) I can reset that to 6AM.

8 hours sleep! It was so nice. It was mainly due to a summer cold and taking nyquil but I put on the overhead fan and relaxed. emoticon

Still working on it. Saw my sleep specialist this morning -- mostly for a pep talk. We agreed that I need to remain vigilant in maintaining my best good sleep habits, that sleeping outdoors under the sky was ideal, and that 'vigilant' and 'sleep' sounded like an oxymoron when linked......... :-)

Stepped backwards last night. Up and down four or five times. Maybe got six hours of sleep in snatches. Sleep should be so simple!

Feeling great - sometimes I don't even need the alarm clock to wake me up at the right time. Hope I can keep this streak going! It feels so good to not rely on caffeine to get me through the day. I intend to continue with my night-time routine and new sleeping habits.

I learned a lot but unfortunately my sleep degraded to the point of being put on meds. The meds aren't really helping and are making me groggy during the day so I'm probably going back to the "stay up at night" mode - at least then I may be a bit tired during the day but can still function. I'll still continue to keep a journal and try to do as many positive steps as possible in hopes this will gradually improve.

Still worth the effort even though I wasn't 100% successful. emoticon

I started sleeping better the first week. It is good to know that simple things can help me fall into sleep faster: I turned the ceiling fan down a setting and started closing the bedroom door.

I am waking up at the same time too. I have a lot of pain at night from Fibromyalgia. I use rice bags that I make and warm them in the microwave. It relaxes my muscles enough to help me relax enough to sleep. Fortunately this is not an every day occurance but sometimes it is more frequent. Pain is a terrible obstacle to sleep.

I'm going to sleep at about the same time every night. Pain still has me up once or twice a night but I have no trouble going back to sleep. I've been waking up feeling rested which is very unusual for me. I quit having anything to drink after 9 and that seems to help. All in all I think that this was a success. My relaxation techniques seem to work well.

I have been sleeping much better - yes, cutting down on the fluids in the evening has helped a lot but having a 20 minute nap when I get in from work has probably been my most effective strategy. I'm able to get jobs done before bed and therefore cut out the stress which was keeping me awake. It's not perfect yet but it's so much better. I have more energy during the day and can get up in the mornings in a better frame of mind.

Just got to keep it up now. Thank you SP!!

I'm sleeping much better. I think since it has gotten a bit cooler that has helped a lot, that also means the bedroom windows have been shut which has been keeping the dog quieter. I also have turned the sound off on my phone so i no longer hear the tone when emails come through, plus I turn it over so i can't see the light. Plus I have been cutting down fluid intake in the evening. All of that plus getting up a bit earlier has helped considerably. No more waking up at 2,3 or 4am and not being able to get back to sleep!

I've been sleeping TONS better than I was. It's surprising what a couple of small changes can do. Now all I'm going to do is try to keep it going!! Keeping a cool bedroom, exercising regularly, and trying to go to bed and get up around the same time everyday is pretty easy to do - so I'm going to continue with all these things and hopefully be better rested from now on!!

Tonight (or tomorrow, I forget) is my final night. I will really sleep well tonight.

Temperature is important to me. Tonight will be perfect: windows open, breezy outside and in the forties. Me: covered with a fuzzy sheet and fleece blanket. Sleeping a full NINE hours!

Looking back at my original goals this has been a successful challenge. My goals were simple: 1. Sleep min 8 hrs/night. Since 4.25.11 I've managed 17/18 nights (don't remember if I tracked prior to then) ;
2. In bed by 9:30 pm, read, lights out at 10:00 & use my sleep meditation tape. Standard practice now, if I go to bed later I shorten the reading time with no noticeable effect;
3. Up no later than 7:00 am. Again, standard practice. I'm sure it helps that it's spring, lots to do;
4. Enjoy my day emoticon or emoticon . 100% on this one. There have been challenges which were met with no noticeable effect on my sleep length or quality.
I've been fortunate to have a good attitude, good doctors, and good resolutions to the issues needing to be addressed: oxyemia & a REM disorder. It's not 100% but even 90% is acceptable - it's life after all.
I do not know how fellow team mates manage with so little sleep. It must be wearing mentally and physically. I am confident maintaining thru this challenge will be beneficial in your search for some rest emoticon . God bless.

I was doing SO well...I have learned (I really should say relearned cuz I used to do lots of the techniques) so much...I was getting to bed a bit early (to allow time to fall asleep)...then it got hot. We did not have our air conditioners in yet...

Monday night was the worst! Up constantly...sweating...drinking...visitin
g the bathroom....going outside to cool off...going back to bed, dozing...REPEAT.

Tuesday wasn't quite so bad.

Tonight will be MUCH better...we put the air conditioners in! I'm really going to bed early now!

Wow, I made it to Week 4! I decided to look back on the goals that I had set in Week 1 to see how I have done. My goals were as follows:

- go to bed by 11pm every night
- stop all beverages by at least 9:30pm (I tend to have to wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and then I have a hard time falling back to sleep.)
- stop doing things that are too invigorating before I go to sleep (such as playing a video game on my phone while laying in bed)

I have been inconsistent in going to bed by 11pm every night. Some nights I do this, sometimes I do not. I have been doing better with stopping all of my beverages by at least 9:30pm. This has been a sacrifice for me at times, but the benefits have been well worth it, as I am only getting up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night about once or twice a week now as opposed to every night. I have done fairly well with the last goal, as I do not do things that are too invigorating before I go to sleep nearly as much as I used to.

As for long-term goals, I want to try harder to get to bed by 11pm every night and I will continue to stop beverages by 9:30pm. I will also continue to use the natural sleep aide that I have been using. I also plan to continue to go to the gym at least twice per week. I feel that this exercise helps me to sleep better also.

Overall, I am sleeping much better and am thankful for this Challenge in helping me to do so!

I am sleeping more consistently and getting about 7 hours a night.
One or two nights this week I still had issues falling asleep, but stayed in bed. Four weeks ago, I would have gotten up and stayed up.
I am loving sleeping.
I am hanging out in this challenge for a few more weeks!

I have enjoyed the challenges and goal for this team. I have always been one who needs more sleep and this has reinforced for me that I need to go to bed earlier.

I started this journey at 206 pounds.

Each day is a fresh beginning.

Keep looking forward to new goals.

This has been a great challenge. It's really helped me pinpoint my sleep trouble spots, while also giving me some strategies to get better sleep. I did not see a lot of progress in the first two weeks, but now I feel like I'm really getting better sleep. I actually have some nights where I don't wake up at all! That is a huge change.

I have enjoyed this group. I found that the journal helped me realize where problems were - for example... for me, it was playing on the computer in the evening; if the computer is off by 8 - I can sleep. I also found that I am looking forward to my exercise regime cause I know that I'm gonna sleep really well that night - getting a schedule and sticking to it helps me really a lot!

Yes, I find the Journal has helped me a lot. I keep track of everything I eat and all the herbs and vitamins I take too! Its how I can see what doesnt work and what helps me do better, and found somethings do help me sleep better than other things. Right now I am experimenting with taking cayenne pepper with at least two meals a day; lunch and supper. For I felt it helped me with my blood pressure and sugar! Because I am wondeirng if its what has been helping me.

On the other hand, I find taking valerian causes me to be calm but then it also seems to also causes me to get a headache. Least I am hoping that is why I have been having these headaches. Headaches where I hear sounds. Scares me! But the journal always helped me to keep track of everything I put inside my mouth! Its how I learned what helps me to sleep. Those meals I have had... Magnesium, asparagus, haddock fish, and the cayenne pepper have been proven to helped me! Its between the combinations of foods I have seen this connection of those foods and sleep thru my jounaling, that's shown me what helps me sleep. Its how I learned... by keeping the journal and its been a real eye opener and a neat awakening to be able to see the connections between what I eat and when I get sleep! Hope you all can find what helps you too! susana

My favorite verse is Hebrews 13:5
"He (G*D) said to me, I will never leave thee nor forsake me"
Also found in many other books: Joshua 1: and Matthew and in the words of Jesus my Messiah!
I also love reading Sauls-Pauls Roman road!
Favorite verse in the New Testament is :Romans 8:1."There is therefore, NOW, no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.... but after the Spirit! My desire!
My favorites writer,j.myers /Charles calls.

I have learned that I sleep better on days that I exercise, and I also learned that exercising in the middle of the afternoon does not help me get better sleep. I have to exercise before noon or after 6 p.m. to feel energized AND be able to sleep at night. I have also learned that increasing the time I spend with my husband and daughter, while reducing the amount of time I spend on my job (teaching-grading papers, writing lesson plans, etc.) in my evening hours increases the amount of sleep that I am able to get. I have not enjoyed the sleep journal, but I did find that it was a necessary tool for me to figure out what keeps me awake at night. Before I began this challenge, it wasn't unusual for me to only allow myself 4-5 hours of sleep at night. Now, I always get at least 6 hours, but closer to 7 hours each night. I look forward to continuing to implement the changes I have made throughout the past 4 weeks to the next 4 weeks. I hope that by the time Summer Break arrives, I will have built the habit of sleeping 8 hours every night.

One thing I learned...every time I eat at this Mexican restaurant, I alway sleep better that night. I think it may be due to the Guacamole (which fights Homeocytseins, a hormone that raises cortisol!) And affecst the heart! It may be the HOT sauce too! Because I know when I have cayenne pepper in a meal, I also sleep better. It regulates my blood pressure. I find my heart rate drops below 60 beats per minute and I believe that is why my adrenaline is going off every hour while I am in bed! Its what wakes me up! I also find when I take Black cohosh I sleep better too. so what gives? Has anyone else notice these things? Food affects sleep too! And so does high blood suagr cause one to sleep deep! That I know all so true! Tell me does anyone else notice how things affect their ability to sleep?

My favorite verse is Hebrews 13:5

Exercise and fresh air help a lot. And my visualisation techniques have altered a little: I used to take myself, in my mind, to a peaceful place and lie in long grass, or float in a pool - now I see myself running through beautiful scenery - running like the wind, effortlessly breezing through the scenery. Working on stress release and relaxation - deep breathing.

I now get 8 hours of sleep thanks to my doctor changing the timing of some of my meds. What a difference~ Specialists have tried for years but I fired them all and my Family Practise Doctor was able to finally come up with the answer. i am 69 and have many diagnoses that prevented me from falling asleep and or staying asleep. I have Restless Legs Syndrome, lymphedema, neuropathy from diabetes 2,etc. I am so grateful!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I worked so hard yesterday raking for about 2 and a half hours, that I fell asleep on the sofa, and if I went to bed sooner I am sure I would have slept longer, but woke up. And then I went to bed late. I hope to be able to get used to going to bed sooner. Because I think thats the trick; counting backwards from when I wake up,and I should get 8 hours, if I go to bed by 9; but I think I need to get ready for bed an hour sooner and get in bed sooner, and just relax! then maybe read in bed if I cant go to sleep right away. Then I should be able to have 8 hours of sleep! Hoping to apply it is another thing. I could not help but pass out after working so long outside in the sunshine! It makes me sleepy! I think being out in the sun made me tired sooner than I thought I would be and underestimated that . Its probably why I past out earlier ( sat on the sofa at 6:00 and found I had fallen asleep and slept thru the show I wanted to see! But woke up at 9:30 and if I had been in bed I would have gotten 8 hours of sleep! (Has anyone else fallen asleep earlier but awaken up after a couple of hours of sleep and then had trouble going back to sleep once they did go to bed?) Susan

Well, at the end of this challenge and still not making it to bed by midnight but I am at least not getting up in the middle of the night any more. Having my kids bot being in toddler beds and finally out of cribs helps. I want to be completely with out sleep aids before this is all said and done though. I'm still working on that. But I'm also still seeing a neurologist so maybe there's still hope for me yet..... emoticon

Great to finish this today. I have come a long way since I started the challenge! emoticon

Key for me is exercise - 60 minutes will put my mind 'at rest', and allow me to fall asleep. emoticon

Finishing this challenge - took me more like 5 weeks, but what a blast! Learning to sleep and the benefits of sleep, and then sleeping has been an adventure. This last week has been a struggle not to fall back into my old ways of staying up late and getting up early. But I've not had a 5 hour night in 4 weeks! A virtual miracle for me. My long term goals are to:
keep a regular bedtime between 10-10:30
get between 6.5-7.5 hours of sleep 4-5X a week
continue to journal 2-3x a week
continue tracking my sleep with my fitbit

I've enjoyed this journey and reading many of your posts. LAZYBUTT- a scripture to encourage your quest to sleep: Psalm 127:2. I'm enjoying living this promise (even while I sleep- who knew!)!

ALBEAUMONT.... TRY EPSON SALTS..ITS THE MAGNESIUM AFFECT! IT RELAXES THE BODY ( LEARNED THAT FROM MY COUSIN WHO HAS MS, IT HELPS WITH NERVES TOO. THE AFFECT LAST 4 TO 6 HOURS !
i GOT SOME SLEEP BUT AS THE DAY WHERES ON, THE LONGER I TRY TO STAY IN BED THE HARDER ON ME. BUT GOT SOME SLEEP ALST NIGHT. EACH NIGHT I MADE UP MY MIND TO GO TO BED EARLIER OR GET UP EARLIER, SO I WILL BE TIRED AND SLEEPY BY MY BIO-RHYTHUM/ REGULAR SLEEP TIME/ CLOCK. I AM DOWN TO GOING TO BED AT 10, KNOCKING OFF BY 11, GOT UP AT 4 AM TODAY, SO HOPEFULLY I CAN GO TO BED AT 9 PM TONIGHT (SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS, BUT ONCE I TYPE, NOT GOING BACK AND ERASE AND RETYPE) . Unfortunately, I have not been able to meet my goal of sleeping without a sleep aid. However, it has been interesting to see what doesn't help, such as a bubble bath in the evening. All that does is raise my body temperature even though the bath is not overly hot. Thanks for all the information. It was worth a try.

I love the OJ idea... I'm having trouble falling asleep as I gain more energy. And most of my weight is in my belly -- which is definately a stress-related thing. THANKS!

In addition to the goals I set at the beginning of this challenge, I will add: no liquids at least 2 hours before bedtime. This has really affected my sleep since I have to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom.

I know Oranges and orange juice in the evening help cut down the cortisol which is stress hormone. Which helps me to sleep better also. I can manage two to 4 oranges in the afternoon and evening. There's a chemcial in oranges that cuts down this stress hormone (Cortisol) Black eye peas also help cut this stress hormone down too! Which affects your ability to go to sleep. (Done my homework!) I try to have either the one or the other during the day. That or ExStress (it is made my Natures Way! ) Hope this info helps someone else! Hope you all feel less stressed so you can get a good nights sleep!

Yeah, it's weird how our bodies are so sensitive and unique. So sometimes all the scientific research and all the feedback from friends still doesn't make perfect sense.

I am really sensitive to caffeine, but it has an exact time frame. So I can drink exactly so much, from a specific source (coffee) before a specific time and I'm fine. If not, I am wide awake. But I can drink white tea right up to bedtime with no problem, in fact it helps me sleep. Go figure!

Post-menopausal me noticed that a lot of things like that, i.e. hunger, timing of eating, what kind of food, what is REALLY in it, all that can make a big difference in sleep.

The other part of this mystery with insomnia, is that some of us have food "sensitivities" which can act like chemical addictions in our bodies. So when we reduce what we are consuming of that particular thing that we are sensitive to, our brains will behave as if we are in withdrawals. Chocolate seems to affect a lot of people that way.

Coconut oil is awesome for energy and the brain, but there are timing and dosage guidelines that make it work better and don't keep you up at night.

I'm working on some recipes that have coconut and high quality chocolate for some one who has thyroid issues, diabetes (Type II), and chocolate addiction.

I am finding eliminating chocolate from my diet all day helps me. Even the smallest amount of chocolate seems to cause my sleep disturbances,... I am finding! Because it seems to be delayed in my system, and they say it stays 14 hours, but I think longer for me. It helps me if I can forgo having any chocolate. I am really trying to go without eating any. Only when I get a headache will I have any choclate. Its hard going off choclate because I find I get migraines when I dont have any, for any length of time. So I been gradually lowering my chocolate intake. For I believe its what is causing much of my sleep problems because it does affect the nerves. Its very hard when your so used to having chocolate every day. I covet the coconut more than the chocolate but its hard to find coconut wihtout chocolate. (Does anyone have a recipe for coconut macaroons? send it to me.) Thanks in advance for the recipe. Because I know coconut does help the brain also! susan
