I can't believe it is already week four! I have been sitting here reading SP articles while doing arm exercises with weights. Had to be ten minutes. Plan to do 15 on eliptical next and later today a little pilates. Got to think and write down next goals. There are so many ways I am starting to take care of myself that it makes my head spin. I am retired and am starting a business and yet it seems it takes me most the day to do self care.

Yesterday I got a mini-workout doing community gardening, then 10 mins on the elliptical, and burpees throughout the day (GO NERDFITNESS RANGERS!)
Husband and I took the dog for a 3 mile walk. We almost ate alright, but I had extra cookies and ice cream and he "punchbowled" cereal. We fell off the food/exercise wagon during this recent family emergency, but are working on it. Planning the weekly meals today and shopping tomorrow, then cooking for the week on Tuesday. Currently have a two week casserole planned (for me mainly) and a white-bean crockpot pot-pie for him!
Our fall goal is giving up alcohol. Figures.. right when pumpkin beers come out. (wink)

Rest of week goals:
More burpees for me. Another family walk or two. He's running today and I'll be spinning twice this week!

Started my week 4 very well, I have noticed increased energy level, a happier attitude, and overall I have less time to snack mindlessly. This is great.

This morning did 26 minutes on treadmill for a total of 2.36 Miles.

My long term goal is to keep walking the baby every day. I also want to try to do a little more working out during his nap time :) I want to slowly build up to longer walks with him. He still gets tired and cranky if I try to walk for too long..

Hi Lauren, TRUST Your Self. SP has given us the tools, access to all kinds of information and resources. Now it's time for us to pick up the ball, put it in our own court, and decide the Game we want to play, and the rules We Choose on how to play it.

For instance, I bought some whole grain tortillas which tasted awfully like sawdust...which means I won't eat it. I did make the leap to brown rice. So...phooey, I'm going to USE my 100 calorie white-flour tortillas; which is still better than 2 slices of high-calorie bread.

I'm eating more fruit. I'm eating more veggies because I love the micro-wave steamer bags which gives huge taste dividends.

To be sure, this is rather scary -- like removing the trainer wheels, but I won't know what I am fully capable of until I do allow myself to learn by practice & from experience.

This morning I decided to trust myself to eat when I am hungry; to stop when full; and to make better and better good choices as I go along.

What do you think? How else can we build self-confidence? And isn't this really the Secret that's going to get us to Maintenance? And the means to keep going?

Keep on Sparkling. xox ~Rie

I'm up to 70 minutes cardio and still tweaking my strength training. I want to do more in the strength training department so working with a trainer at the gym to find safe exercise I can do without adding more damage to my back. There are days when I'm pumped with energy and rearing to go and days I'm dragging. I try not to think too much on those days and just go and do the best I can! So far have lost 12 pounds and can feel my clothes getting looser!

I was a little hesitant to make the commitment to exercise for fear of failure but 10 minutes a day seemed doable. Fast forward to the end of week four of my commitment and I am transformed!

I have exercised at least 30 minutes a day, often over double that, for the almost whole challenge. A little movement felt good and that really snowballed.

The real gift is that I've started meeting nice women at yoga classes and during walking. They are another reason I'm sticking with the program.

Today I am 10 pounds lighter both on the scale and on my heart. 60 more pounds to go to a slender, fitter me!

Happy Thursday, Lauren. That's solid truth, Portion Control begins with what we put on our plate in the first place. I think I released my final "attachment" to Remembered taste of food last night. I had a small Thin crust pizza, with mushrooms & green peppers; and even though it was a good Italian restaurant-- I ate it, while appreciating it did not taste nearly as good as my memory of it did.

If you believe in your Higher Self, or Guardian Angel...they get the message of our real desires and present all kinds of opportunities to fulfill those desires. Sometimes, though, our thoughts have much deeper meaning tucked inside them, and this is what Spirit helps us to achieve. Now, I didn't know to put it in terms of "getting rid of desires based on "faulty" memories'...but that's what I got! I just laugh and feel grateful every time one of those old attachments gets the chance to disappear.

Today I bought a loaf of yummy calorie-laden bread, had one slice, and I'll bring the loaf down to the common room, of this apartment complex, for others to enjoy. I got my money's worth in satisfying my taste...win/win for everybody!

Toss the word "diet" and the other word, "forbidden" and just keep switching from high-cal to lower-cal at YOUR own pace...and these changes will be permanent! It's not one "quick fix cures all" it's a fascinating process of getting to where we really want to be from here.

I'm getting in a root for me, here, as I am rooting for you. LOL Keep on Sparkling, ReeGee

Hi Lauren, You know how they say to be careful of what you ask for? Well...in my case I really wanted to be free of the fear of food, and free of the fear of eating.

So, the "answer" to that desire came in the form of invitations, one right after another, to eat out with other people, day after day! And it worked...Because that was my most heartfelt desire. The first time out, I did go bonkers eating all the old "forbidden foods" and noticing that they didn't taste quite as good as I thought I remembered it did.

In fact, I ate a lot of different foods, and discovered that SP has got my mind working for me...to evaluate what is the better option between this and that. The "taste craving?" I don't know for sure, but that's what it seems to be...that old expectation of feeling high on taste??

Whatever that is, it is no longer running the show. And it is showing in my frig & pantry, and it is showing on the scale. Slow & steady, a half pound here and there, even while eating out!

My favorite eating out strategy is to go to the fruit table first, at a buffet, or to order some as dessert to be put on the table with my meal. Any dessert. Nibble on "dessert" at any time, and instead of having to finish the meal BEFORE dessert, dessert is an integral part of the whole meal, and I can eat it anytime, and actually stop when I am full. This stragey means I have zero sense of being "deprived" or of having missed out on the "best" part.

I took SP's Plate Method to heart and I find I am always satisfied, and usually unable to finish all that is on my plate. With that method in mind, if I eat my protein & grain, to the point of satisfaction, then the next "meal" I eat is my veggies & fruit, which is equally satisfying.

I think the simple truth to all of this is that we need to create new habits to replace the old ones. And the more often we do the new, the less "emotional charge" is left in the old.

Whatever works is my motto, same as SP's. Just think of this as an experimental adventure and make it a win/win situation. All around. btw I am a bone fide sugar addict, but I have discovered that I can eat one particular brand of Licorice twists...and eat only one...and only occasionally. No craving. No binge. And a bag lasted me more than a month...it wasn't even in my mind calling me. Once in a while, it's a light little something to finish off a meal.

So, I hope you soon discover you happy little "treat" that works for you, too. Keep on Sparkling! ~ReeGee

Hi Lauren, thank you for your kind words. I have always been able to encourage others...now I am actually able to encourage my own self. hehe See? It is never too late for anything! I am so surprised that I can feel like I'm "forward moving."

Before it was following somebody else's diet...the great long lists of "thou shalt not's" LOL What always astonished me is that the whole thing...every bit of what I had learned and practiced simply vanished...blew right out of my mind.

HLS, Healthy Life Style, is my new mantra, and it has opened me up to all kinds of possibilities and new perceptions, that "dieting" blocked me from seeing & experiencing.

I am truly grateful for being able to embark on this new adventure and to actually enjoy it. Like today, I went out to a Chinese buffet with an older guy who is facing the start of dialysis next month. So he's out to enjoy his "last meal" before he has to abide by a list of taboos.

And I actually put fruit on my plate and nibbled on some first! And I carefully scrutinized the table before I put anything on my plate...I actually went for ONE of this & that, and I went for no breading on the meat or veggies, knowing that it tastes great without the extra stuff on it. This is definitely new for me...seeing through SP eyes! Yay Chris! So keep on Sparkling and just let your confidence rise & soar. This is wonderful supportive information that was never available to us before. Life is wonderful! xox ~ReeGee

Hey Lauren, Try making brown rice along with the white and mixing them together, then keep tweaking the ratio until brown tastes good too. I'm glad somebody mentioned rinsing the brown thoroghly before cooking, it helped a lot.

I'm 72 and I bought a "core exercise" gadget, and I just wonder if I'd be able to get up after I lay down to do them! LOL I plan to try one at a time to get the hang of doing it right. I do walk back upstairs at least once a day. Little changes do add up.

For myself, I'd say SP gave me the courage to hope that this time I really can do it! Life sure is interesting. Keep on Sparkling. ~ReeGee

TY MPN. Sometimes we just need somebody else to remind us of what we already know. LOL Me, too! Since I traded in the word "diet" for Healthy, I find I'm looking at food through a new lens to make better choices. "This is healthier than that." "This gives me more bang for my calorie buck." So I bought me some brown rice and a rice cooker, and it works great. I didn't even have to do halvesies this time...half white/half brown...to make the switch. It's good for me, and my taste buds decided to agree with me! LOL

Little changes here & there really do add up to make a BIG difference. Keep on Sparkling and all will be well--which means that it must already BE well. xox ~ReeGee

Yes ReeGee, it does make me feel better! Thank you so much! I kept telling myself last night that I should only be comparing myself to myself, not anybody else, but I was tired and it seemed like I couldn't stop thinking about how far I have to go.

Your encouragement has confirmed that I should be "on my own journey" and not someone else's. If I focus on what I've done during the challenge, I won't feel so defeated. Because a month ago, I wasn't exercising at all. Now, I make time to exercise every day - even if I don't want to. That's a giant step for me. I'm tracking my food and, while I'm not perfect, I'm so much more cognizant of what I eat and drink. I'm making more healthy choices than in the past, because I don't like going over my goal for the day (even though I still do sometimes).

I'm always telling newbies to make small changes (baby steps) so they'll become lifelong healthy habits. I just have to remember to be patient with myself and be happy with the progress I'm making.

Thanks for the support and encouragement! It really means a lot to me! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Don't feel so bad. I, too, am sedentary and I only do my beginner's routine on my Abdoer exerciser...15 minutes a day. I about fell over laughing when I checked out the "intermediate" level--you want me to do what?? I do like the effects, but some days, I only do it so I don't break my streak. LOL I do want to find a pedometer so I can add steps--I know I'm nowhere near 5,000! I just keep telling myself that this is about permanent Healthy Life style changes, and am pleased with my own progress.

I feel SP is much more about cooperation than competition; about sharing, encouraging; and motivating each one of us to do as much as we can--and to add as much more as we can. So I add a bit to my daily exercise by cranking up some music and add on a few more repetitions here & there.

I am no kid, and I have no car to get to a gym, nor living space to buy more equipment--but I am way ahead of where I used to be just a few weeks ago. I feel genuinely proud of evolving my relationship with food, with eating, and with moving my body. BUT, I don't compare myself to others--only aim to improve my own personal average.

My challenge was getting to it, so I simply worked to "get it done" earlier in the day. It helped when it said that it's better to eat something before exercising. I'm not hungry in the morning, so I decided to do the plate method and lay out my full breakfast, nibble a bit before exercising and then nibble some more until I finish it, whenever. Whatever Works is a great motto! Hope this helps you feel less an "outie" and more insider. Keep on Sparkling!

Wow - everybody is so upbeat - I feel kind of like the "odd woman out." I've consistently exercised during the challenge. Most days were just 10 minutes - my longest workout was 40 minutes. I was very motivated at the beginning and kind of looked forward to my workouts. I don't know what happened, but this last week or week and a half, I've had to MAKE myself continue to exercise. I usually feel better afterward (except for some aches and pains), but I don't look forward to it. It's just another chore.

That said, I am glad I'm doing it - at least I'm making some "baby step" toward exercising. I think one thing that has discouraged me is seeing how much exercise other people are doing - some people are running or walking 4 or 5 miles a day. In comparison, that makes my 10 minutes look paltry. I wish there was a separate group for people like me who are mostly sedentary, need to lose a lot of weight, and aren't so far ahead of me in their exercise quest.

My future goal is probably going to be to do the 10-minute challenge again, but just try to increase it to 15 minutes per day. I hope I learn to love exercise some day.

I am completely amazed at how quickly these last three weeks flew by. It wasn't even a difficulty for me to to the 10 minutes a day challenge. I thought a couple of times that I might skip a day but I said to myself "Stephanie, it's only for 10 minutes - then you can stop." Well there was not one day that I stopped at just 10 minutes. Most days I went for at least 30 minutes.
I found I had so much energy some days that I went out for another walk or another bike drive in the afternoon too.

Also I tried several of the Spark People videos and found some that I can do on rainy days and some that I will continue to do for strength training.

I am surprised that for such a short challenge (just 10 minutes a day) that it made such a difference for me in the area of exercising. It feels like I will be moving every day just to keep up this energetic feeling.

What a great challenge. Thank you Spark People.

Now I am going to finish week 4.

At the end of the day, be able to look back and say "I did my best today."

I have completed week 4 of this challenge now and have discovered a new me. I have made exercise a daily habit ...not for 10 minutes but for a least 60 minutes.

I have learned how to make my workouts fun and the energy I get afterwards has produced a new, more energetic, more happy person that the lady who had become a couch to fridge potato.

The best thing about this challenge, for me, has been that I am actually getting exercise every day. I used to get sporadic exercise throughout the week, always missing 3-4 days, and only exercising when I could get at least 30 minutes. I still get a lot more than 10 minutes of exercise on most days, but now I also get at least 10 minutes on other days.

I've decided that I'm never going to increase my ridiculously easy goal of 10 minutes because it's so easy and once I get started, I usually do more.

I loved this challenge! emoticon

I've been consistent about exercising daily since joining this team. We were out of town for 4 days on the road and even then I managed to get in at least 10 minutes of exercise daily and added steps to the amount of walking I did. My long term goal is to increase my exercise from 10 minutes a day to 30 minutes a day. Because of my arthritis and injuries, I'm unable to do that today, but I am increasing to 15 minutes a day and will gradually increase the time I exercise and the steps I take until I reach 30 minutes a day. I am committed to sticking with SP and developing the healthy life style that I truly want. Losing weight is only part of the equation. Exercise is another and I'm getting there, one baby step at a time.

Until I took the 10-minute daily exercise streak, I didn't "exercise" at all. I have an Aboer, which took care of the limited space problem, so I can DO something. I have added minutes and actions in addidtion to my basic routine. I also walk down 2 flights of stairs often, and walk back upstairs at least once a day. I want to get a pedometer and count steps for real.

The neat thing is that I find myself thinking of how to incorporate more steps & more stretching thoughout the day. And, I am working to limit my time on the computer, which is a challenge.

So, here I am at week four and actually going with much more consistency & persistency than I dared hope. And it shows! I intend to keep on SPARKling. ty Sp for your support & encouragement, and really good advice. ~ReeGee

My goals are too keep getting up every morning and exercising before heading to work/school. I am going to keep parking farther away so I can get in more walking. I am going to go walking every night. I am thinking about doing a 5K next year for a Christian Camp so I am going to be working on that and maybe even training for some other races.

When I strated The Ten Minute Challenge I wasn't really sure why I joined as I was already working out up to and hour 3 days a week and walking 30 min daily. However as things will happen The very next week I had a bad injury and was really hurt. I could barely move let alone do my intense workout. But as things would have it once I start a challenge I finish it. If it wasn't for this group I may not have done the ten minutes as it was pretty hard there for a while. Well I am happy to say that just staying with the program and doing something for those ten minutes whether it be from a chair to an actual walk. has helped my motivation and I didn't let it get me down as it may have another time.

I am back up to swimming 30 minutes 3 days a week and walking 10 min. the other days. I have been cleared to go back to start my strengthening routine as long as it doesn't hurt and Have new exercises from Physical Therapy to do at home and in the pool. So I now have a busy 6 day schedule of exercises to do and I am making progress to being pain free again. Though it will still be a tough 12 weeks of therapy to get back to where I was 3 weeks ago I am thankful that it wasn't any worse. Now I just have to start over with the food and lose the weight I gained from take out for three weeks. I never thought I would say that but I was enjoying my eating habits and even though I tried my best to keep it to a minimal I just gained the 4 lbs I had already lost. so that isn't as bad as it could have been. My energy levels are back up and I am ready to tackle the hard work ahead.

I will be completed my 4 week exercise streak in a couple of days and I have to say I am so thrilled with myself.

I have learned to really enjoy exercising again. I found a truly easy way to burn lots of calories by using my stationary bike while reading a good book. Today I actually cycled for 75 minutes unit my knees started to hurt so I stopped then.

After my shower and taking in some water and carbs to replenish myself and finished reading my book, I decided to go power walking. Unfortunately 20 minutes into my walk, it started to pour rain so I called hubby to come and pick me up.

I didn't stop after getting home and instead since I had gotten my heart rate up, I decided to do 30 minutes of strength training. Right now I am extremely high on endorphins but I have now decided the rest of the day, will be for resting.

I have never felt this good in a long time and when you are 60 years old and feel better than you did when you were 30 that is a real plus. I am so grateful to Spark People for giving me back my incentive to live healthy.

Wishing all fellow Sparklers a healthy and happy journey!

I'm extrememly happy I am still doing the excersise at least 5 times a week even though i completed the challenge. In fact most of the time it's 20 minutes at a time now. Pretty soon I will up it to 30 minutes at a time

For my future, I would love to be able to do 3 ten mile runs every week without getting injured. My main issue with running is that I push myself so hard that I get injured. These 10 minute workouts, especially now that I'm injured, have taught me that exercise doesn't have to be at least 30 or 45 minutes, I can get it done in 10 minute increments! Even if I only have time to do one 10 minute increment, I'm still better off than if I did nothing!

My long term goals really involve sticking to making goals. I am currently training for a walk/run 5k and want to go from there to run a 5k then up to 10k etc. I also want to stick to focused exercise to tone down. I feel more hopeful than ever I will reach my target weight and doing it has never felt easier. I am looking forward to do the maintenance challenge - it'll be a new one for me.

I had a great month of exercise - no excuses - just keep it going and always give myself permission to do 10 minutes if time is truly tight.

I have been maintaining my 10 min+ goal. I usually have 25-30 min of cardio but I have added 10 min a day of ST. that I can do from my chair. I am thrilled that I have been sticking to the routine. emoticon

I have learned that workouts don't have to look a certain way. Small chunks of activity do add up. I am maintaining, and staying a little below, my goal weight. I have recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and PSVT. Both of my doctors are very pleased with this method of managing my weight and fitness. I feel healthy, in spite of these chronic conditions, and confident that I can maintain this throughout my lifetime. Five days a week I make sure my workouts are longer but even on off days I find I crave more activity.

I am now finished with Week 4 of the Official 10-Minute Daily Exercise Streak Challenge. It has been a big success for me. I LOVE the concept of "you only have to do 10 minutes" and then I usually do more. On my bad days, it might be limited to 20 easy minutes, but the point is CONSISTENCY. I have begun to achieve that consistency through this challenge.

I plan to remain in this group and continue with this challenge for the future.

I've not seen any changes on the scale, but that's par for the course for me with menopausal issues/drugs and hypothyroidism. Fortunately, I FEEL the difference, both physically and mentally.

Good luck everybody!!

Stephanie
