That was a guess based on what happened to my grandmother. Her body wasn't uptaking nutrients properly, resulting in some key anemias.

The Internal Medicine doc said that my nutrients and uptakes are fine. Whew! I'm going to the Neurologist to check for a benign condition called Essential Tremor, which just means that there's overactive nerves. Most of the time this occurs in someone's voice, but mine is in my hands and sometimes legs.

We shall see!

The good thing is that my B12 is totally good, better than people who eat animal products. I take a supplement from TwinLabs that dissolves in my mouth. I'm not sure on the dosage. It must be working though, because my B12 status is great.

Iron is also good, and Folate is also good.

Really? Did you take a test or are you self diagnosing? I think it's odd since you have been supplementing. Did you always supplement or is this recent? Still odd to me, from what I have read most people that have vitamin deficiencies respond pretty quickly when they are given the vitamin. From your last post you have been supplementing for a month. Are you taking a high enough dosage?

It looks like I might have a B12 deficiency. I don't know how, considering that I take supplements, but it does look likely. The reason is that I'm losing a lot of hair and that I'm kind of shaking, both symptoms of a B12 issue. Let's see what the doc says tomorrow. He'll most likely do blood work.

I just got the B 12 that dissolves under your tongue. I was taking the regular vitamins that you just swallow, and had no idea that the absorption is a lot better with the ones under the tongue.

Looks like marmite and vegemite are similar

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite

I don't drink soy milk, I try not to eat too much soy. I love almond milk and want to branch out to hemp milk too.

EVELYNF, as LYSI77 said, you should be just great. Maramite (is this similar to Vegemite?) is also a good source of B12, as is the fortified nutritional yeast.

Your body does have stores of it from eating meat and dairy, however there is no way to know how much of it you have in your body stored. It isn't wise to count on the stores. Good job for taking care of the B12 issue!

Do you drink soy milk? A lot of soy milk (and I assume other plant milk) is usually fortified too.

in many nutrients than meat and dairy eaters. Way cool!

Congrats too on your recent change to veganism. I love it and would never go back. Here's something I thought of the other day- Compassion+Environmentalism+Health=Veganis

Since you take a supplement (which gives you 500% of the RDA) you get enough Vitam B12 so don't worry.

Thank you for this. I am a recent vegan, 3 month anniversary on the 28th, however am very interested in maintaining healthy levels of B12.

I take the Dr Fuhrman Gentle Care Vegan multi, eat Marmite and nutritional yeast. Is this enough?

LYSI77- This is an awesome resource!
GROGGY!!!- Really??!!! I just posted a question on one of the other veg teams about Vega. I was wondering if it's good. What do you think of it? Should I try it? PM me so we can keep this thread about B12. Thx so much!

I'm sure all of you know this, but this is a public service announcement to let you know that you cannot get B12 from plant sources (except some from fortified plant-based milks and Red Star brand nutritional yeast). You need to take supplements for this, or consume the above products.

It isn't true that you can eat enough sea vegetables to meet your requirement. The kind of B12 present there isn't the kind the human body can absorb.

Your best bet is supplements, or fortified sources.

You need this for your neurological and cardiac health. Too often, the importance of this vitamin is overlooked. We do have enough in our bodies from when we did eat meat and dairy (unless we've always been vegan) to last for awhile. However, it can't last forever. It's important to make sure you have enough!
