Right now I do a frozen banana, handful of blueberries, handful of cranberries, about a 1/2 cup Kefir, a tsp of coconut oil, sometimes some Straus milk, and two handfuls of spinach or chopped kale. Delicious!

I'm pretty new to this and am slowly learning. I didn't get this way overnight and the same goes for my habits. I currently have a Kitchenaide blender, cant quite afford a vitamix yet but this is a green smoothie I enjoy. My measurements are appropriate, as I normally eyeball it.

I put approx 1/2 c apple juice, an entire banana, a tablespoon of either peanut or almond butter, 1/2 c vanilla yogurt or greek(both either low fat or nonfat), about 1 - 1 1/2 c frozen strawberries and then I fill the rest of the blender with spinach, several handfuls. Sometimes I'll add blueberries , ground flax seeds, or stir in chia seeds after blending. I control how thick it is by the amount of frozen berries and how green by how much spinach I add. If I am serving fussbudgets, I put in less spinach so it doesn't turn green and they never suspect a thing! This is normally enough for two-three people/servings. Calories and nutrients...well, I clueless. I just know it tastes yummy!

Today is a new day. I can't change yesterday or know what tomorrow will bring. I can only control right here, right now.

Some great ideas for smoothies. Thanks everyone. Mine is very basic but I love it.
I use a Oster 6 cup blender. Fill it with fresh spinach and 1 cup of Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla flavor. Blend till smooth, then add 2 Tbl ground Flax, 1 frozen banana, cup of frozen strawberries, Tbl Agave, 2 Tbl plain greek yogurt. Add water to bring it to the 6 cup fill line.

*love* green smoothies! I learned from GreenSmoothieGirl that if I take some liquid and blend my greens first then it comes out with a much better consistency than if I try to blend it altogether like I had been doing. I just have a Cruisinart blender and it does wonderful.

I always add 1 Tablespoon of ground flaxseed (which I store in my freezer so it doesn't go rancid) and *a* nut (brazil nut, walnut, pecan, peanut).

My general recipe is:
1 cup liquid (usually almond milk but sometimes coconut milk or water)
1-3 cups greens (blended with liquid first before anything else added)
1 Tbsp flaxseed
1 nut
1 banana
add other fruits until I have 32 ounces of liquid made

Sometimes I'll add cocoa powder and peanut butter and go heavy on the bananas to make a chocolate shake.
Sometimes I'll add cinnamon or a piece of ginger.
I might add a cucumber or an avocado with green grapes (which makes an excellent "whipped topping" by the way).
It just all depends on what's on hand.

Hi!
I was really happy to find out that I didn't need a really super blender to make this particular green monster. It's adapted from the "Oh, She Glows" website.

1c frozen spinach
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled & chopped
1/2 - 1 cucumber, peeled
1T fresh lemon juice
1/2T maple syrup
1/2t coconut oil
a little water to get things moving.
Whoosh and enjoy!

I've started making green smoothies as part of my breakfast. I prepare most of it the night before, washed, cut, and even already in the food processor bowl which I stick in the fridge, then in the morning I add the fruits and liquid and it's so quick and fast! I fill up a mason jar and drink it on the way to work.

I've been using spinach mostly as the greens, though have also played with chard, cabbage, kale and arugula along with it. Then I add some 'fresh' tasting ingredients like cucumber, celery and/or parsley. Add in some fruits, some almond milk, maybe flax seeds, raw honey if it's a little on the bitter or sour side, and a drizzle of olive oil to help with the nutrient digestion.

I like this *far* better than juicing, which makes me feel guilty for throwing all that beautiful pulp away when I can't manage to use it in another recipe soon enough. This way I get all the fiber and goodies as well as the vitamins. It's quick and tastes great!

I'm contemplating trying green tea in them as well.

i'm loving green smoothies and use a blendtec - works great. My go combo to that my husband loves contains: raw beets, carrots, kale, banana, sugar free hot chocolate mix, almond milk, ice and cottage cheese -- yes, not typical, but gives it a great creamy consistency. I sometimes add sugar free hazelnut flavoring. For a savory one, tomatoes, cucumber, red peppers, green onion, parsley, spinach, beets, cumin, lemon - very much like a gazpacho. Beats V8 every time and it is very satisfying.

My fave green smoothie is. Spinach or kale, pear, probiotic coconut water and ice mixed in my vitamix. I use coconut water as a base in almost all my smoothies and it's delicious, low cal and healthy.

My "go to" VitaMixed breakfast or lunch smoothie is the following. It's not yummy-tasty, but it's drinkable (sometimes I add some Splenda to make it less bitter if using kale), and gets 4 servings of veggie and fruit into you easily/on-the-go:

~2 cups water
~3 ice cubes
--2 fruits (mainly these: half frozen banana, 1 cup frozen blueberries, 1 cup fresh or frozen organic strawberries, 1 small granny smith apple, 1 small orange)
--2 veggies -- one greens (like: 1 cup frozen spinach, 2 cups fresh kale, 1 zucchini)
and one sugary (like: 1 large carrot, 1 medium golden or red beet)
1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein (sometimes 1 scoop if eating less protein rest of day)
2 TB ground flax
1 TB of undutched cocoa powder mixed with cinnamon 50:50
1/2 TB metamucil type fiber
Sometimes I also add a 1/2 cup kefir (liquid yogurt, basically) or plain greek yogurt.

The above with carrot-apple-blueberries-spinach and 1/2 cup Fage 0% fat greek yogurt has the following nutrition (but you subtract the 24g fiber for an efective carb count of 41g):

This isn't quite a green smoothie, but I've been working on a "pumpkin pie" smoothie.

Basically it is 1/2 a can of plain pumpkin with your choice of milk/soy milk, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla and sweetener and ice. I use some liquid stevia in mine. I did try it with some spinach, but there's not enough sweetness to counter the bitterness of the spinach, so it didn't really work for me. I've also tried OJ concentrate and carrot juice in it, and both are good. I think I'm going to try it with baked sweet potato instead of the pumpkin next time. Perfect workday breakfast since I don't cook dinners with pumpkin or sweet potato because DH hates them.

Tried my first green smoothie today, it was great. I tried one from the green monster movement web page. It was the blueberry banana green monster. I was afraid I wouldn't like it with the spinach, that it would be bitter, but it wasn't. I will definitely make it again. And it is very filling.

I do green smoothies daily. I use a bendtec and my vitamix is on my Christmas list this year.

I'm new, but the green for me is kale. I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk along with frozen assorted fruits. I slice and freeze my bananas and then bag them up after they have chilled for a couple hours in the freezer. I also like to add a bit of silken tofu which ups the creaminess as well as the protein.

I think I have an oster too. I would love a new high speed blender but they are very expensive. What I do is start with my liquid and greens, keep the blender running while I add everything else, I noticed when I started doing that that my greens blend a lot better.

I am a smoothie lover, and have recently started adding spinach. LOVE the look of IREMEMBERME's ingredients below!

Question: What kind of blender do you folks have? I have an Oster, my second one, and I think I am under-powered! I know this is the WHOLE foods team but I figure, if the whole food is going in, what's a little dicing and slicing among fruit and veggie friends, right?

I like half a blender full of kale, spinach or romaine lettuce; one banana, and handful of frozen fruit (peaches, berries, whatever I have on hand). I then add water until the top of my water line is equal with whatever food I put in. Blend it up!

BTW, I am new on this list. Looks like a good group!

I haven't actually made it, but I have seen a lot of recipes for a cucumber, carrot, apple smoothie. About 1 cup of diced apple, 1/2 cup cucumber, 1/2 cup carrot, and sometimes a dash of cinnamon is on the ingredients. Smoothies are so fun to play around with!

Hmm...I was going to offer one, but then I realized it called for adding an apple, so that wont' work. I don't know of any all veggie smoothies that actually taste good. But I have tried an all-veggie smoothie that had kale, cucumber and carrots in it. I thought it was absolutely awful, but some people must like it because they sold it in a bottle!

my smoothie of the week and it's really been making me happy is:

1 cup homemade almond milk OR coconut water
1 frozen banana
Spinach or Kale de-stemmed (I've been using kale but have used spinach too)
1 heaping TBSP hemp seeds
1 TBSP acai powder
1 TBSP chlorella
1 TBSP chia seeds
1 TBSP flax seeds (I measure out then grind)
2 - 3 TBSP carob powder or cacao powder

I blend the liquid and greens first then add the banana and the rest through the top while the blender is running. By taking off the stems I get a super smooth drink and i don't have a fancy blender, just an Oster. I'm saving the stems to juice.

So good!!! I use kitchen spoons so the amounts are general. The carob powder is so good sometimes I like it better than cacao

Greens like Kale and Spinach go well with just about any fruit, and carrots too. They pack alot of nutrients and just make you feel plain good that you can sip down a whole cup of veggies and not even taste it! I have made up another recipe that is a healthified version of Orange Julius.

2 tbsp of Orange juice concentrate
1 large banana
1/2 cup of plain yogurt
1 tsp flax
1/2 cup milk of choice
1 tbsp Cream of Coconut ( not the milk, it's like a syrup)
fill blender until at least 1/2 full of water.

My boys LOVE this and I don't feel bad about giving them something that is a little sweet when it makes such a large amount, they are hardly getting any sugar from it.

So glad I found this thread for some great new ideas. I just got a Vitamix and am using it several times a day. It's awesome! My favorite breakfast smoothie so far is throwing a banana, mango, orange and an apple in with at least a cup of ice. My whole family loves it. I'd love some ideas for more veggie centric smoothies too if anyone has them. I made one today with spinach, carrot, onion, tomato and red pepper. It was okay.

my go-to recipe is this, simple and it never fails to taste wonderful.

2 bananas
1 apple or pear
5 whole frozen strawberries
1 huge handful of spinach, kale or whatever green you prefer. I have even used sprouts ( it was all I had at the time, and didn't taste good, but we drank it)
2tsp of flax
water filled about 1/3 of the blender.

Sometines I add plain yogurt and a spoonful of honey, but not very often. You can add carrots, or avocado. Just keep making them and you will find a combo that you like.

Yep! Last week I added extra chia seeds and it had a sort of pudding consistency. I divided it by 5 and had breakfast ready for the week.

This week I'm green juicing for breakfast. I'm already missing my smoothies!

I use kombucha as the base for my smoothie, then add a banana, fresh or frozen berries, greens - this week it's kale & dandelion. Sometimes I add coconut oil too or cashews or make it with mango and some cacao. I also include supplements but that's a personal preference. I throw in chia seeds, hemp seeds, green powder and right now acai powder - I probably wont' get that again. Maybe some maca. I also include ground flax when I can remember and it hasn't been too much lately...

Sky's the limit really - you might to have some kind of formula if it makes it easier
base: water, nut milks, kombucha, etc...
greens: anything you love
fruits: anything you love
fats: avocado, nuts or nut butters, coconut or anything else you love
extras: supplements, dates, cacao nibs anything really

I make my smoothies from whole foods.

I like combining half a frozen banana with 2 cups of fresh spinach, an ounce of avocado or 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt, a handful of frozen strawberries or blueberries and then I add in different combinations of protein powder, unsweetened cocoa powder and/or green superfood powder. You can add a nut butter for extra protein and fat if desired as well.

This blog of mine has pictures of some of my salads (per the other post) and green smoothies! www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo

For me the smoothie problem is the same as the juice issue. This is not 'whole food'.

You can skip past the noni, goji, etc. bit as it's not that pertinent.

I have used the website mentioned before and it is a good source for recipes. Also try using your Search engine to find more information and recipes.

Okay so I've just been trying to 'wing it' by not following any recipes. But more often than not they're not turning out so well. Which is a bummer cause when they do turn out well my 6yr and 3yr old LOVE THEM! So anyone have any great recipes?

"Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sand of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us then be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
