I have just started reading Ann Rule books. I love mysteries but written from her view point what an awakening. One of her latest is In The Still of The NIght. I picked it up and just couldnt put it down.

I've read every one of the Eve Dallas series! I love it! I'll have to check out J. A. Jance - thanks for the suggestion!

Have you read any books by Kay Hooper? They're pretty good - I've gotten hooked on them too!

I'm happy to find this thread - I think I was born with a book in my hand, and always have my eye out for a good author/series!

Have any of you tried J. D. Robb? A pseudonym of Nora Roberts. Think mystery meets romance with a little science fiction thrown in. Set around the year 2059, the main character is Eve Dallas, a homicide detective. Throw in a hunk named Roarke ... ... Great series, I never can wait for the next one to come out!

I also like J. A. Jance - two detective series, one set in Pima County Arizona, and the other in Seattle.

JoAnn, you've gotten me hooked on James Rollins' books! I'm on #5 or 6 and I've got another one sitting in the back of the motorhome! They are definitely the "can't put them down" thrillers!

I just saw a new trilogy by Susan Wiggs - the Chicago fire series?? I'm going to see if my library has them yet! Heaven forbid I should buy a paperback!!!

I've decided I need to do some light reading and get back to reading. I haven't done a lot lately.

Did you all know that Jimmy Buffet not only sings but writes books. I bought one of his on the sale table at Barnes & Noble called "Swine Not?" Finished it while we were gone.

Since we are home I have read one Debbie Macomber and am starting another. There are two books in one paperback that I have called "Angels Everywhere". I have had this a while but never read it.

I skimmed your lists and discovered I have a Julie Garwood novel called "Saving Grace". There is a bookmark half way through it, but I can't remember reading it or what it is about. Will have to check it out.

Decided I need to go to the library and check out what's available there.

Jo Ann, I saw a couple of them at Barnes and Noble today, the only one I remember is Maximum Ride, but I think the original start was When the Cradle Falls, or something like that. I think you could Google James Patterson and it would list all his young adult series. I also picked up The Hunger Games today, can't wait to read it. I really splurged and bought $38 worth of various books (all markdowns). I'll post my opinions on each of them!!

Kathy another friend was telling me about Patterson's bird children. Do you happen to recall what the first novel was? I'd like to see if I can get it at Bookman's (used bookstore).
Thanks!

Jo Ann those books sound really interesting so when I get to Barnes and Noble, I'll look for them. James Patterson wrote some Young Adult books about bird children, (the Max series) that were so intriguing, I couldn't put them down either!!

We have a tv in the bedroom, but neither of us watch it before bed. I read for about 20 min. sometimes less, sometimes more. If Bruce is watching tv in the living room and I want quiet, I will go to the bedroom or family room, sometimes outside if the weather is pleasant.

I just finished The Mockingjay, the third book in a trilogy by Suzanne Collings. The first book was The Hunger Games, a futurist thriller about Tributes (children) selected from regions to go to the Capitol (in tis book) to participate in The Hunger Games. It literature for Young Adults so they are quick reads, but the stories are so good, you can't put it down!

I used to read at nite too, but that was b4 we had a TV in the bedroom (which I HATE). Now, I take my book and go out to my outdoor room and read to my hearts content. I read while we travel too, especially on that long trip back and forth to Fl!!

Our nearest Barnes and Noble is over 60 miles away. There's nothing here, so I use the library alot. Now that the weather is cooling off I will do more reading. I like to read at night, before I go to sleep, so I don't read anything that will keep me up!! LOL

Great Gracie...I think you'll like her books. I have been so busy this summer with the grandkids that I haven't read much, but with school in session and the garden coming to an end, I can start again...love to read, so missed it.

My youngest son is running three businesses and running himself ragged in my opinion, but he doesn't have time to read, and so listens to books in his truck. He likes the scary ones....I'd drive off the road!

I finally found her - the spelling was DAHEIM. I did a search for 'alpine series' and found it with some library resource. I've got her first book on hold now so I can check it out. Thanks for the tip!

I'm reading Nora Roberts' "Search" right now and it's good thriller. I've also got JoAnn Ross book going too (Far Harbor) and it's a lot like Debbie Macomber's writing. Good story line - interesting characters

Gracie, I had to double check. Thought maybe I misspelled her last name and i did. It's Mary Daheim, not Dahman. I accidentally ran into her books at our library. One of the ladies who put the books back recommended her and I couldn't stop til I read the whole series. I think she might have one or two left to complete it but I haven't had the chance to check it out.

Wow, Gracie! So glad you started this thread. I'm usually reading 2 at once, 1 actually reading, the other listening on my MP3 as I treadmill it! Just finished Stephanie Meyers "The Host". It was wonderful! She also wrote the Twilight series, all of which I've read and loved. James Patterson, David Baldacci, Lisa Scotoline, Susan Wiggs, etc., etc.love them all. Many other authors escape me right now, but will post them as I remember!!

I found a new author. His name is Stieg Larsson. He wrote three books then published them. Sorry to say he then died.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Girl Who Played with Fire
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
I read the first one and like my nephew said it is a little slow to start but it gets real good. I have the second one and will start that one when I finish the one I am on. The third one is in print but hard back only so far.

I also like to read about the Holocaust. When I worked in the nursing home, we had a holocaust surviver as a resident. So sad.
Also have you read any of Patricia Cornwell's books. I read one called The Body Farm. There is a place in I think West Virgina that is the real body farm. I read about that and was it very interesting.

Grace, I was surprised to hear that Woodiwiss has passed away, didn't she know that we enjoyed her novels!
I've read Celeste Bradley "Spy" novels and really enjoyed them, I also enjoyed her 'Duke' novels.
I like Julia Quinn, also. I discovered Julie Garwood, years ago, and have enjoyed 'watching' her grow as a writer. From her first novel to her current contemporary novels, I've always enjoyed her.

I just started David Morrell's The Shimmer, he wrote the Rambo novel, which I've never read, but have read most of his novels. He is often referred to as the father of the thriller novel.

I've read both Dorothy Garlick and Laveryl Spencer. Enjoyed them both. I've recently discovered Susan Wiggs and Sherryl Woods. Both are what I would call women's authors. Not totally romance, but it is there. Susan Wiggs has a bit more suspense in her books.

Never read anything by Kathleen Woodiwiss. Will check and see if my library has anything by her. Thanks for sharing. I'm finding new authors. WooHoo!!

I think I started my love of historical romances with the Kathleen Woodiwiss books and then I found Joanna Lindsey. I moved on from there! I just searched both of them to see if they had written anything lately and I found out that Kathleen Woodiwiss died! Dang!

Another favorite is Julia Quinn and I've just discovered Celeste Bradley. I've just finished Bradley's "Duke" series and really enjoyed them- now I'm checking into another series about 'spies'. Haven't started it yet.

If you like Fern Michaels, have any of you read LaVrly(sp) Spencer or Dorothy Garlock. My first romance book was by Valerie Sherwood, I devouered her books. Then I went on Kathryn Woodiwiss. They're novels would bring tears to my eyes.

I used to enjoy Linda Lael Miller, then something changed in her writing.
I, too, have skimmed pages, especially when authors are describing the flora and fauna, usually boring.

I love Fern Michaels too. And Linda Lael Miller. And I think I've read all of Debbie McCromber (sp)books. Last year, when I was recovering from surgery, I was at my son's in Casper, Wy. They have an awesome library, and I must have read a book a day. Their local hero is CJ Box, the mystery writer. Funny, he grew up three houses down from us in Casper, and his younger brother and my youngest boy were best friends from third grade on, and still are as they both live in Casper, and their kids are growing up together too. When I saw the success CJ has had I felt really happy for him. I've only read a couple of his books, but they are really good.

One of my favorite authors is Fern Michaels. I particularly liked the sisterhood series. I hear you about the skimming part. I enjoy historical fiction and also criminal/thriller fiction. One of my favorite authors in that line of writing is David Baldacci as well as most of John Grisham's books.

While I was working in the nursing home, we had a group of ladies that would come around once a month and bring books from the book club. One of our residents was a ministers wife and she got some books to read. I was looking at the titles and some were the romance books and some can get a little "wild" to put it mildly. I told her that may be she would not like that kind of book. She told me " I know where babies come from and when I get to that part I just skim over that". emoticon
I will never forget her for that and we both had a good laugh over that. So now I read the books I want to and "skim" over the parts I don't want to read. I think of her every once in awhile.

I love Jude Deveraux! I've read every one of hers! My other favorite historical romance authors are: Julie Garwood, Catherine Coulter and Amanda Quick (Jayne Anne Krentz + other pen names).

I just discovered Vince Flynn and enjoyed his writing - will eventually get to the rest.

This thread is already giving me quite a list to check out!

Water for Elephants...an excellent novel, thoroughly enjoyed reading it...very hard to put down.

Joan...Clive Cussler one of my favs, if you like Clive you'll enjoy James Rollins, don't have to read his novels in order but the Black Order series needs to be read in order. His first novel was Subterranian, and it was hard to put down.
If you don't mind crass foul lang. and like action adventure then Matthew Reilly is another must read any of his, my favorites are Ice Station and Contest
Steve Berry, Brad Thor and Vince Flynn are also excellent international thrillers. Rollins/Berry/Thor are friends in real life and will use a reference to each others main character in their novels...cracks me up!

Currently I am reading Jude Deveraux, one of the more renowed Romance writers. I love her novels about the Montgomery family, A knight in Shinning Armor my favorite of hers. Right now I am reading Lavender Morning, the first in a trilogy.

You all have mentioned some books and authors that I have not heard of. It has been a long time since I have read fiction. I love all the Jean Auel books and have read them all. Waiting for her next one if there is a next one.

Most of my reading recently has been non fiction, except I was at Barnes & Noble recently and picked up "That Old Cape Magic" by Richard Russo that I am reading currently. That is a first in a long time.

I have so many authors that I like, I don't think I could list them all. Right now I am reading a Clive Cussler book. It is a mystery book with Dirk Pitt as the main person and has a government background. They take place all over the world. My nephew got me started on this one. He has large plastic totes full of books and is letting me read them.

This is a great idea Grace!! I'll have to dig through my box of books and see if I have any of the ones mentioned.

I seldom have bought books, people give them to me. I did buy and read most of the Left Behind Series. I lent them to one of my soldiers through Soldiers Angels and haven't got them back yet. I'd like to re-read them and then get the most recent ones.

I will have to read that series as I love mysteries unless they involve stalking and then I have to put them down.
I also like the Alpine mysteries by Mary Dahman. They are set in the small town of Alpine, Washington, a fictious place and the stories revolve around the editor of the town newspaper, the town police chief and the staff on the paper, all a bunch of characters.

Nevada Barr

She's one of my favorite authors. She has a whole series (Anna Pigeon) of mystery/thrillers revolving around the adventures of Anna Pigeon, a forest ranger in the National Parks. Each story is set in a different park and it's best to start at the beginning of the series. (Track of the Cat) Nevada Barr was a seasonal ranger in several National Parks and became a full time ranger in New Orleans before resigning to write full time. Her descriptions of the parks are fantastic.

Right now, I'm reading 13-1/2, a psychological thriller she wrote last year.
