As of May 18, 2013, the current tally is 31539.85 miles
31539.85 divided by 238857 = 13.2% of the way to the moon.

Just totaled the miles reported on the other thread for the first time since November.
Current total is 29,955.77 miles.
29,955.77 divided by 238,857 miles to the moon = 12.54% of the way there

There is another thread called "Post your total miles here", where we post. You can choose your own day to post. Some of us "forget" and post catch-ups. Periodically one of us (usually me, but others have done this) posts a running total in that topic. That's usually only every few months now... but we are moving!

Welcome to the great Turtle Moon journey. Glad to have you along. EVERY turtle counts, new, old, or in between!

Memories, don't know her real name, but told me I should come here and get in on this journey. I have read about the breakdown of the miles and hope I understand it correctly.
May I ask what day of the week you post your miles.

Also, could you tell me what day of the week you have weigh in. Should I weigh in now at the beginning or wait for the normal day?

New Turtle full of questions, right? I hope not to be too long in learning so I won't have to ask.

I'm on this journey with you and am already glad to be here.

There is a separate thread called "Post your total miles here" where folks are posting the miles, and that's where I updated the totals... I apologize, didn't cross post the totals here on Monday!

We are currently sitting at 26,830.42 miles or 11.23% of the way to the moon!

And yes, we very much welcome you to the journey! You can post miles any day you want. Most of us who have been consistently doing this for a while post Sunday - Saturday weeks, but some of us miss a week and do catch-up posts, and I total every so often, all over in that thread!

Just joined the group and would love to help you all reach the moon. I see that the current total is 16,449.59 miles so far, though no one has posted in the last 2 months. I will keep track of my miles and post them here on Saturday, as I believe that is the official posting date. See you all on the moon!!

She's too young to be an "over 50" turtle, but my friend HOT4FITNESS has the spirit of the Turtle team, as shown in her blog entry about our half marathon this past Sunday. Yes, I'm mis-using the Turtle team "to the moon" thread to promote her blog entry, or at least to share it with y'all. I think it deserves to make the "most popular", but that's just me. Read it. Decide for yourself if you agree, and if so, "like" it.

Man, she got ME to do it! And she did it WITH me... on two artificial knees. What a woman.

emoticon Cross-posting totals, as usual... do you realize it's almost a year since we started our trip to the moon? We are persistent turtles!

Since my last totals post, ten intrepid turtles have continued to report in, and have added 872.87 miles since our last totals post. emoticon

That puts us at 16,433.59 miles, or 6.9% of the way to the moon. We're going slow, but we're keeping at it. At this rate, we have 13 more years to go to make it to the moon. What we need are some cyclists... they add more miles in the same time commitment! Of course, I am not denigrating my own upcoming half marathon effort, or my long walks home... it all counts. Every mile! Every step! Every ten minutes of moderate activity!

Welcome SongOfJoy27 and Lee-2011 on your first miles contribution!

So, let's keep on traveling, however we each do... and we WILL get "to the MOON, Turtles!"

emoticon emoticon Cross-posting totals so I have a placeholder in case any stray posts here have miles in them (want to make sure I don't miss any miles!)

During this eight weeks, turtles have reported moving a total of 1,664.89 miles, making our total to date 15,560.72 miles! That is 6.5% of the way to the moon.

At our current rate, we will reach the moon in 12.69 more years. Do not let this trouble you, dear Turtles! This speaks to our long-term commitment to fitness. If we keep doing this for 12.69 years... what fit turtles we shall be!

If you're moving, it counts: swim, bike, run, walk, paddle a canoe, aerobic dance... anything can move us toward the moon!

Scroll down a few posts and you'll see how I convert "minutes" to miles, based on intensity. Also the steps to mile conversion factor we're using on this virtual trip.

Glad to have you join us! emoticon

Mama Turtle,

Thanks for the wonderful invitation to this team. I walk about 3 miles every day. I noticed Denny's reply about bike riding. Every Monday I ride to my Japanese teacher's house which is 16 miles round trip. Does that also count?

Again, thank for the wonderful invitation. I was so delighted!

Thanks Barb,
I'll most likely post this week end then. I hope to find someone to ride some PA bike trails with after winter is over, then I could put some real miles up.

I'll be happy to add your miles to our team totals, Denny! Every form of activity counts... look down a couple of posts for conversion factors. And by the way, welcome to the team.

Most of us post once a week, or every other week, some catch up after several weeks... whatever. And I add 'em up periodically, when I have the time and inclination. We also hand out "Moonie" awards based on various factors, including, by the way... members can nominate one another!

Hi I'm new to this team. This looks like a lot of fun.
Do you just track walking or does cycling and other activities count as well? I have 833.5 miles walking from 2010 and 67.9 riding. Could I add any of these. I'm up to 23.7 walking this January. I keep a daily log but don't always post daily specially during the warmer months. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks team for the award! And for the information - just wondering why on earth I hadn't thought of asking before, lol. Oh well, very turtle-like of me, I guess. I have gone back to December 1, calculated those minutes, type of cardio, converted them and added them, and will post to the 'miles' thread. Amazing how it adds up, isn't it?

Converting minutes to steps:

Each ten minutes of "moderate" activity counts as 1,000 steps. Moderate means your heart rate is elevated but you can still talk easily.

Each ten minutes of "vigorous" activity counts as 2,000 steps. Vigorous means your heart rate is elevated and you are breathing heavily enough that it's difficult to talk or sing or whatever.

Once you have steps:
2,000 steps counts as a mile.

Also, I convert minutes and steps for folks if they don't want to do it themselves. So, if someone reports to me that they exercised for 120 minutes, for example, and don't tell me anything else, I'll give the team credit for 6 miles (assuming moderate activity level).

Thanks for joining the journey... it's kind of fun to watch us turtles moving across space! emoticon emoticon

I'd love to be part of this journey but don't record my miles, just my minutes, because a lot of it is not distance, just exercise. If it's any help, today I have done 70 minutes. Can anyone work out exactly how I can count my minutes into this epic journey? emoticon

Speaking of Turtles and "late"... these totals are from three weeks worth of reporting in!

11 distinct turtles have contributed in adding 725.387 miles in that time. That brings us to ta total of 10,913.07 miles, or 4.57% of the way to the moon. At this rate, we have 12.05 years to go.

Committed for another 12 years of moon walking fellow turtles? We're gonna be one fit turtle herd!

Noted this time out: BarbyDell and MomOf2Chis have joined the journey... gotta get the Moonie Awards updated, too!

Most of us post once a week... I usually post mine on Sunday for the prior Sunday - Saturday week. But other folks may have other days they prefer to post. We originally started on a Sunday, but you can join anytime!

I total up every week... or two... or three... depending on how many other obstacles (like real life) get in the way.

Glad to have you along!

26 miles for the week of October 31 - November 6.

Memory is a wonderful gift,
For with it the best is never past.
We carry thoughts of home in our hearts,
To live in always though time has passed.

emoticon It's been four weeks since I last posted totals, and we have now been moving toward the moon for half a year!

In the most recent totals period, 17 distinct turtles have contributed miles. We have traveled an additional 1729.765 miles to our destination for a grand total of 9864.41 miles, 4.23% of the way to the moon!

emoticon emoticon Well done, Turtle herd!

At this rate, it will still take us 12 years to get to the moon, but look how fast that first half year went!

Onward, to the moon! emoticon emoticon

Cross-posting the totals:

emoticon emoticon Drumroll, Maestro! It's totals time!

This week we had 11 distinct turtles reporting in (gee, there were 11 last week, too... tell your buddies to join in, folks!)

We added 300.6 miles to the journey this week, and our total miles to date are not 8135.62 miles, or 3.4% of the way to the moon. At this rate (we're slipping a bit) it will take 12.42 years to get to the moon... and we've been working at it for 22 weeks already, so figure 12 more years.

But we SHALL get there! Just keep putting one turtle foot in front of another... and push!

Cross-posting the totals, as usual. Nola, fyi, your 120 minutes translated to 6 miles (10 minutes of moderate activity = 1,000 steps, 2,000 steps converts to a mile). emoticon

I know you've been waiting for three whole weeks for a fresh set of totals, so FINALLY Barb's rear is in gear and here they are!

With 17 distinct turtles reporting in over those 3 weeks, we added a whopping 853.47 miles to our journey, making our current total 7,587.7985 miles!

That bumps us up over the 3% of the way to the moon mark, so it's emoticon emoticon time! 3.18% of the way there!

At this rate, it will take us 629.58 weeks to get there (of which we've already gone 20), or 12.10 years. We are flying, turtles. I can't wait to see how healthy we all are after 12 years of journeying!

Moonie awards yet to come... watch that thread!

Once again, cross-posting the totals! emoticon

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Yes, it's that time of week: totals time for the turtle moon walk / run / swim / bike / move in general!

It was a "light" reporting week, with only ten distinct turtles posting mileage. But those ten turtles delivered with 374.1294 miles clocked. This brings us to 2.82% of the way to the moon, or 6734.33 miles.

Can I get a emoticon for the team, here? At this rate, it will take us a total of 12.28 years to get to our final destination. And we've been at it for 18 weeks, or a third of a year already, so that means only 12 years to go.

We can do this folks, we are marathon turtles! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Cross posting the totals: emoticon

This week we had 12 distinct turtles reporting in (yeah, I know, I am totaling early, there's probably a few of you that will end up getting added in next week). We added a total of 508.94 miles to the journey.

That gives us a grand total of 5964.31 miles, or 2.5% of the way to the moon.

So, let's give ourselves some good credit... at this rate, we'd be to the moon in 12.32 years - we are still gaining ground! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Just keep swimmin', and biking, and walking and running... and lifting, and vacuuming, and whatever!

Pat, I averaged your 4 weight workouts figuring 20 minutes apiece, as vigorous, which would be 16,000 steps. This would be 8 miles, converted: so for your week, you got credit for 12.6 miles from the two posts.

You asked for a link for counting other activity, I don't really have one. I'm using a paper booklet that is part of my work program called "Walk this way" that talks about converting activity to steps, based on time. The 2000 steps for a mile comes from this, as does the 1000 steps for ten minutes of moderate and 2000 for ten minutes of vigorous activity.

Anyway, once again, thanks for participating! We get a fun little metaphor along with our exercise and improved health!

It's TOTALS time! A drumroll, please!

I think the Moonie awards gave us a little shot in the arm, because we have 16 distinct turtles reporting in since the last totals post. Some have even played catch-up, reporting several weeks, so we have done good things for our averages, too.

We added 510.45 miles to our journey, for a grand 15 week total of 5,455.37 miles. emoticon That is 2.28% of the way to the moon, people. It will take us 12.63 years to get to the moon at this rate... look at that, the catch-up took almost half a year off that total time.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon Watch for more Moonie awards to come!

Jackie just count your minutes... if you are performing "moderate" activity, i.e. it raises your heart rate and breathing but you can still easily talk it's moderate... ten minutes counts as 1,000 steps. If you are doing "vigorous" activity, i.e. raises your heart rate but you have difficulty talking during it because you need all your breath for your activity... ten minutes counts as 2,000 steps.

And steps can be converted to miles. We're using the 2,000 steps = a mile conversion factor.

So if you just report how many minutes moderate, how many minutes vigorous... you CAN go to the moon with us! emoticon emoticon

TOTALS posting:

Since my last totals post (it's been two weeks), 16 distinct turtles have reported in. That's 3 strays in this thread, and the bulk over in the main "Post your Total Miles Here" thread. Don't worry, I hunt for those miles to add! Some turtles reported multiple weeks, so this should be good!

620.08 miles have been added to our total, which is now 4,944.92 miles! Can I get a emoticon emoticon ? (That would be a Hooah, for the Army turtles!)

That tips us up to 2.07% of the way to the moon. emoticon

At this rate, we will get to the moon 13.00 years after we started... we're going to be SUCH good friends by the time we get there! emoticon emoticon

Don't forget... all movement counts... post minutes, miles, or whatever, I'll add you in!

When I remember, I put on a cheap pedometer I bought. Not sure how accurate it is. I logged 7720 steps this week, even though I did a lot more. Can't measure it though as I keep forgetting to put on the pedometer. Hope it counts on getting us to the moon.
