We're hot here too Sunset. I'm glad your getting out there anyway. Our dogs get walk am, or pm. We live in the desert, so middle of the day is out until it cools down. Congrats on the 2 pds!

Feeling more hopeful today, as Summer is starting, and we've been more consistent in our daily walks lately! A promise to my doggies, and to myself! Even though it is Hot, Hot, Hot! Down a couple of pounds myself, and Charlee (girl Spaniel)is feeling and acting SO much better! emoticon

Today was nice. We took Alice and Sarge to the ranch with us, then on to exercise the Border Collies.

Yes the weather's wonderful - on the other hand, it gives absolutely NO excuse not to get out and run/walk! Hence I spent 30+ mins today jogging around emoticon Calliope was excited but now is a very sleepy pup.

You are so lucky to have great weather! We live up in Canada, north of Montreal, and right now, when I take my Golden Retriever, Kali, for a walk, I spend an hour after the walk trying to get all the mud and sand off! We are into a spring thaw and there is dirt everywhere! Lucky you! emoticon

My pup Calliope is a lab/pit mix with plenty of energy! We live in Southern Cali and blessed with weather that's 99% beautiful. We try to get in one 2mi walk up and down the mountain every day (atleast 2mi, we're trying for 4mi twice a week). We usually walk most of it, running anywhere between .5-1mi. We run for 45mins-1hour 3 days a week.

I've been trying to get up to walk her 30mins in the morning before work...that's my goal for April.

My two puppies (OK, they are senior citizens but they are forever puppies to me) averaged 1 1/2 hours each and every day in January.
Hubby takes them out for a 30-45 minute walk each morning, I take them out for a 45min - 1.5 hr walk each night...

Okay, I'm done for the week. My total walking was 22 KM (I never remember to keep track of the time, sorry.) Doesn't sound like much but I'm really pushing myself to get out there in the rain and wind and snow and cold, so I feel terrific about it.

I wasn't clear if we were supposed to include tomorrow's exercise in with our totals.

4 KM today (had to save some energy to vacuum the house emoticon ) and 30 minutes of aerobics.

I feel like I have an unfair advantage since part of my job is walking. Is that cheating?

7 KM walking today. 1 hour resistance/strength exercises. Had a really pretty day here today and got out with three dogs, twice! Our little Max who is recovering from a broken leg did two 1 KM walks today, so we're both pretty jazzed. emoticon

emoticon Grace, so glad you got all that exercise in! emoticon
I finally had a good exercise day, too. I hadn't been able to run at all for 7 days and with my half-marathon coming up the first weekend in March that was not good at all. The roads had not only a lot of snow and ice but it was also very windy, plus I had gotten a couple of muscles pretty sore from too much ice skating.
Today I ran for almost 5 miles total, starting slowly with one dog for a mile, than another dog for another mile, then 3 miles with my favorite running girl, Kenya (in the picture). It was beautiful and sunny and no wind and I actually did the first 2 miles in a t-shirt to get some vitamin D as well. I feel so much better as a result.

5.5 KM today! Plus 60 minutes aerobic/strengthening.

The ice is mostly gone so we were able to keep up a brisk pace. It felt GOOD!

Thanks for the tips, Birgit. I've always wondered about the strap-on grippers. The ones I've seen looked kind of flimsy for walking on ice/snow over pavement. I'm 60 and have had a few major back injuries from falls so just can't risk the slippery stuff.

P.S. When I was kind of tired after the first 2.5 KM lap around the lake it was this challenge that spurred me on to do a second lap, so cheers! for the challenge.

Here are a few tips for those of you who have trouble getting out in the ice and snow.
I have found that the most important as far as temperature is long underwear or snowpants, gloves and a hat as well as being nice and warm before you go outside.
What is working for me extremely well to not slip on the ice are winter spikes. The brand I use are by Due North and here is a link so you can look at them. They work for any shoes ranging from snow boots to sneakers to my water shoes I use for running.

www.constructiongear.com/duenorth-wi
nt
er-traction-spikes.html

There are two models, one around $15.00, the other around $22.00 which is the kind that I've tried.
For dogs there are a variety of blanket-style coats that work very well even for my very cold-sensitive whippets. Even in the coldest windy weather I can take them out for at least 10 minutes as long as they can keep moving.
Here is a link to show you what I mean:
www.doversaddlery.com/dog-blankets/c

Some of these are waterproof as well as windproof. There are other horse supply companies that may have slightly better prices but these guys have a good choice.

So, I hope I have taken everyone's excuses away to not walk your dogs this winter (unless the temperatures are below 0 F, or -20 C, in which case you have to worry about frost bite on ears, tail and paws). emoticon

Well, count me in! But I won't be able to start logging Klicks until the three inches of frozen slush finally melts. (Hopefully by tomorrow or the next day as it has started raining.) We've been snowed in for almost a week and, boy, are we missing our walks. I really gotta get some waterproof walking gear with good treads. I've spent over $300 on quality walking shoes this year so the boot budget is...ahem..rather low.

I just found this site yesterday and am still figuring out how to navigate and use all the amazing tracking tools. Here I was laboriously logging data in the homemade Food Diary I made out of an Excel spread sheet. Forget that! Community support is where it's at!

Thanks for the challenge, Birgit.

I live in Maine and it gets super cold here as it does in many other places in the country. I have a tenancy to not walk outside when it is cold. I have tried and it just ends in me and my dog both getting cold. Sometimes it doesn't matter how many layers you put on... too cold is too cold. We'll be back at it in the spring though and for now do indoor activities. :)

Hi! I just joined SP last week. I am on a mission to walk my two girls three miles a day at least five times a week. We are having a somewhat mild winter so far and I have been able to consistently walk without the weather being an issue. I have walked twice in the cold rain which is a first for me. Rain was always an excuse!

Birgit, the wind can be brutal somedays here too, takes your breath away! Don't forget your chapstick!

Glad to join the challenge!

We had sunny weather so I decided to take the dogs for long walks instead of running on the treadmill this morning.
In the afternoon I ran outside, pretty nice for the first half, but on the way back I was running into a cold wind which made it uncomfortable to breathe. Next time I'll take a scarf.

Just took a nice hike with all of the doggies and my mom!
She took 2 and I took 2 and for the hill she took the 3 slow ones and Mister Marshmellow and I took the hill in 2 minutes! TWO MINUTES! I was so proud of myself, I wanted to pass out a little at the top, but yes...I was proud!

It was a really nice evening and you'd think they'd be all tuckered out by now, but they're like, please please please! we need more!

Sorry for being a bit of a creep! Been getting set for school and working out like a maniac to get into my routine before school gets crazy. :)

I hope everyone has had a great week!

Don't underestimate small dogs. I recently heard of a 15 lb. dachshund mix that will run an ultra (50 miles) with the owner.

I started my walking streak with Titan , my Yorkie on Jan. 1. 2012. We walk a minimum of 1 mile a day. Rain or shine. So far it's only rained once and we went between showers. It's cold , very cold, but he likes it. I do put a jacket on him sometimes if very cold.
Before I went on Xmas holiday we had 47 day streak going. See if we can beat that.
Titan might be a little dog, but he loves his out door walks. emoticon

Thanks, our Cocker had what seems like routine treatment for warts removal and dental, they are a very expensive breed to maintain. He's doing great now.
Sounds like your dog really beat the odds. I bet he's a great runner, he looks lean and muscular, reminds me a little of my whippets.

Aww, I hope he's okay!

I'm not really sure what type of dog he is, I think he's too big to be a rat terrier, though. He's about 60-70 pounds, and we know for sure he some form of heeler/cattle dog. We rescued him from a little adoption fair thing outside of a grocery store, he's come a long way, he's survived parvo and distemper.

My poor dogs did not get a walk today except one puppy. One of the other ones had to go to the vet and it took most of the day. Fortunately this happens only very rarely.
Tromaton, that's a very cute dog, is it a Rat Terrier?

This is a great challenge! Since Monday I've been walking one of my favorites out of our four!
Been walking just over 2 miles everyday! On Wednesdays I walk a dog named Lucy and we go for mini hikes at the park near her house!

This is my daily walk buddy, meet Marshall! i43.tinypic.com/2ngr0a8.jpg

Birgit, I've been doing these exercises for so many months now, that I practically do them in my sleep (lol)....I'm an early riser and the moment my eyes open (before dawn).....my legs are going up/down, up/down.....seriously, since I started doing them, I have a lot less pain in the mornings....a good motivator.

But, then, when I'm done, I turn over and burrow into the pillows and listen to the AM news until it's time to get up and walk Lucy. Lazy mornings.....it's good to be retired!!!
emoticon So if you think I qualify, I'm in also.

OK....so.today, I did my leg exercises=20 minutes. Stretched for 10 minutes. Walked Lucy only 1 hour total because we had heavy rain this evening. My legs hurt now....but then, they hurt every night......

Birgit,
I DO exercise everyday. I do strenuous leg exercises very early in the morning before I get out of bed. I'm up to 240 leg lifts, 120 knee flexes and an assortment of other exercises I can do in bed. I get my heart rate up, and get the blood flowing.....so that when I eventually get out of bed, the pain is dialed way down. All in all it's about 20-25 minutes. I do this every morning, no matter what.
Plus I walk Lucy 4x a day...but it's not strenuous walking, the way I used to do (I power walked 20-25 miles a week before all my problems started). I see younger people running with their dogs; biking with their dogs --- and then there's me.....schlepping with my dog (lol)...

Do you think this challenge is for me? I'd love to join SOME challenge, but it's hard to show steady progress ...... .
Maybe I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and increase the intensity/distance when I can -- and not try to measure it. I record my minutes on SP site every day..... Maybe that's enough.

Libby, there are many people who do better not exercising every day, incl. most beginners. It's the rest days/times where our body gets stronger as a result of the challenge the day before. Definitely don't exercise when you are in pain. If it's easier just count your time 20min = 1 mile or 1 hour =3 miles. Exercising with special health challenges is definitely harder and only you know when it's better to rest. Everybody is different but knowing that you have put in the time when possible is what counts. emoticon
So just report what you do and we'll all try to encourage each other. emoticon emoticon

Hi Birgit.

I walk Lucy 4x a day....rain or shine. I have no backyard to let her out in....... (city living).
Some days, weather permitting, and if my pain level is tolerable......we can do over 2 miles over the 4 walks. But, if I'm hurting and it's raining (like today).....it'll be just a quick in and out so she can do her business.
How would I calculate that? I could never show steady improvement..with me, it's a day to day thing.
Any Ideas??

I would like to start a challenge to give us all a good start in the New Year.
But you can get going right now and get a head start. For anyone seeing this later you can join at the beginning of any week (Sunday).
Just record how many miles or for how long you are walking/jogging with your dogs or other animals or even just by yourself. One mile will count the same as 20 minutes so you can count it either way. If you can't walk/jog you can substitute 20 minutes of swimming or your preferred from of cardio. At least once a week report your number for the week in this thread.
There are two ways to win, having the highest number of miles every week and having the greatest improvement from week to week.
Start now and the first week will be a little shorter and go until the 31st.
After that each week will start on Sunday and you can report from the last week on Sunday.
I thought we could keep this pretty informal, just to provide a form of accountability for all of us. emoticon
Along with this feel free to share to any stories, progress, struggles along the way in this thread.
Post once to let us know you are joining.

Birgit
