I have been trying to teach Cassie her obedience so that maybe I can get her into therapy dog if a person from AZ comes up this way to test. I can't afford the training weekends they have here, so it would just be if I can train her myself. She gets really excited whenever she meets new people or if someone comes to visit me and she gets really excited when we go anywhere away from home, so I'm having a bit of trouble doing the training. Today I put a Gentle Leader on her to go to an event they had at a nursery in Parker.

Bailey my Shih Tzu and I go for walks weather permitting. Today there is snow so we are skipping. Bailey loves to play fetch with his toys and does tricks for his doggie treats. He keeps me motivated to walk the neighborhood and get my exercise.

Fiona has joined me on my quest to do a 5K. We are starting with walk/jog and she just whimpers and quivers with joy when we head down the drive.

We also have a newish dog with us. He wandered in last year, but had a chip so had to go back. But they were Marines & are PCSing to Hawaii, so asked if we would like him. So now we play Bozko Ball.

Bozko (the newish dog's name) chases one ball and I throw a second for Fiona. Then Bozko chases Fiona and they both bring the balls back to me. Well, Fee brings it back to me and Bozko usually brings it somewhere close to me, and then we start again. This game works best if I have 6 balls in my pocket when we start!

My dog Charley who is a 5yo Hungarian Hound loves to chase his Frisbee and bring it back for more. We also go for walks every morning for about 3-6 miles. Also he is my work partner. I'ma dog trainer and he goes to work with me just about everyday.

Now ask yourself are there really things that go bump in the night
Or are we taught as children to have fright for things that might
Live or breath or might not even exist
Cause fear is a son of a bitch of man's myths

By telling stories and enhancing em with devilish lies
So stay afraid of the many beings and strange things
That will live forever in folklore and remain to be seen

Titan my Yorkie likes to have me throw the tennis ball and he runs and finds it, and brings it back so I can throw it again.it. If I sit on the bed, I can throw it through the hall into the kitchen and he positions himself like a pointer and takes off as soon as I throw it.
He also has certain toys that he bring around and wants me to try and get them from him. he's very fast and I hardly ever get them .
We go on walks. He loves to ride in his car seat .
And of course he loves to snuggle up and be close to me.

Kirby, 5 yr old boxer mix, isn't much on toys. loves the walks and treats. he will play with his sister Ziggy, 2 yr old beagle mix, for a while. but he doesn't have the energy that she does. She will do a little fetching with DH and me, but she LOVES to play tug with us and her rope. she could keep that up for hours if we had the strength. we are teaching them obedience on our daily walks, since they have issues with other animals.

My dog, Phillip, loves to play "chicken".

Chicken is the name of his toy. It's actually a stunt pilot (made by Hartz, available at Wal Mart for about $5 or on amazon for a little more). Chicken comes in two forms, a chicken and a squirrel. Phillip goes through one about every three months, but we have lots of backups because he's very attached to chicken.

He doesn't seem to care which type of chicken he currently has. He does like all of chicken's other features. 1) Chicken is soft. 2) Chicken has a loud squeaker. 3) Chicken is a good shape to carry around. 4) Chicken is a sling shot- there's a piece of surgical tubing attached to his neck so it's easy to launch chicken a long way by holding the tubing in one hand and pulling on Chicken's legs with the other.

Chicken can be launched a long way. Phillip LOVES to chase chicken! I LOVE to watch Phillip chase chicken. He gets so excited that he runs goofy laps around the dining room table. Maybe some day I'll post Phillip & Chicken on youtube.

My Yorkie loves to walk to the mailbox with me every day -- he knows when it's 3:00 pm and time to go. We have grouped boxes about 1/4 mile from the house, so it's an easy walk for both of us. We also play ball together and snuggle a lot. He's 11-1/2 but still active and bright eyed.

My boxer and lab/boxer mix LOVE playing Frisbee fetch. and fetch with pretty much any other tossable item. My husband and I tend to play Monkey in the Middle with them which works well for our exercise when we're using the Frisbee. The other things Rocky and Ava love to do are walk/run with Joseph and run with me while I ride my bike. Actually, when it's with Rocky, there's not so much biking for me as there is hanging onto the bike and his leash as he pulls me around the block. haha

Our GSP naturally jumps on trees to see if there's a bird or a lizard she can get off it (sometimes successfully).
So we took that trait and started putting her toys on the trees to get her to jump up and get it.
She loves the challenge and looks greatly satisfied after every time she succeeds.
From a good jumper it turned her into an exceptional one.

We don't have to keep her entertained much since we live in a place where many dogs are allowed to be out on their own - and so she has many friends to play with and release energy.
I also like to teach her new tricks and obedience mini sessions - she loves to learn and will do anything for a treat.

My mini dachshund loves to go hiking - so many things to smell in the woods! I often combine it with geocaching trips to nearby state parks or forest trails. Unfortunately he is not fond of snow, so he only comes along spring through summer. In winter, we play with toys inside and practice his obedience and tricks.

I have 3 dogs. Wynda is a 4 yr old 6 lb shih-chi that I have had since she was 6 wks old. She is my sweetness and we cuddle and play fetch. She will run for her toys and bring them back and play tug of war. She loves to ride in the basket on my bike. Then came Bailey, a 2 yr old 20 lb shih-pug. She is a powerhouse and full of energy! We race around the yard and when we go for walks I am not altogether certain who is walking who! She was a rescue from an elderly lady who had to go into a nursing home and could not take her. She has separation anxiety but thankfully it is non-destructive and more emotional. She is also very promising as far as my seizures. She recognizes them and when I come out of one she is kissing me and whining to let me know she is there and all is well. Bailey loves to run so we have races around the yard, and she loves to chase the ball, but thinks it is a game of tag and just touches it with her nose and runs back to me.
Next came Jo-Jo. He is a 2 lb 4 yr old long haired chihuahua rescue. He was found running down the street shaved completely bald with cuts and scrapes all over his body from whatever they used to shave him. We live in AZ and it was summer. His skin was sunburned, blistered and peeling. Something had happened to his hind end, and he would periodically lose control of it, and his tail is completely dislocated with no muscle control. When he came here he would spend all his time sleeping on a blanket and run and cower and hide at any loud noise or voice. With lots of love and pampering, and some physical therapy in the form of encouragement to walk around the yard with me, follow me around the house, etc, he now has excellent muscle control and runs and plays in the yard. He will jump up on the couch from a couple of pillows and back down. He chases me and the girls, but ignores the balls.
What do I do with my dogs? Thrive because of them, survive because of them, make myself a healthier person because of them. What do I do with them? Love them.

I have a mini pin.. one thing he loves (during the summer) is playing him his baby pool. He is like a little kid! he drops his toys in it just to have to go under water to fetch it, spashes around in it and on a lazy day he just rests in the pool sun bathing and drinking the water.
I've never had a dog go so crazy over a baby pool before.

Running and walking, although we never get to do enough of it. They like toys, but prefer bones and stuff to chew on, but they would probably play fetch until my arm fell off.

Our standard poodle is an exercise maniac. We run and hike with him regularly. My husband, an ultrarunner has run 36 miles with him in one shot and he wanted to play frisbee when he got home.

We also do a lot of obedience training and rally-o. I want to do agility with him as well.

We play keep away or fetch depending on what mood my MinPin Roxie is in.
She also likes to play corral the kittys. Shes not mean to them, just likes to play tag.
I try to play for at least a 1/2 hour with her when it is too cold for her to run around outside- I record it on the fitness tracker as "playing with kids"

I take my two dogs to the tennis court at least once a week. I bounce around tennis balls and my dogs love to chase and catch the bouncing balls. The real bonus is that because the court has a gritty surface all that running around keeps their claws trimmed short. Lorraine

When we are having raining/snow weather, we play inside the house. Tug a War. Give me the bone (nylon bone). Sarge and Alice I take with me to the ranch. They run around crazy out there. One time Alice took it upon herself to heard the goats into the pen. She has never been around goats, or sheep, so it must just have been instinct. We also take them to the mountains with us. I live in the open desert, so our dogs get lots of walks there. They all love car rides, so we take them with us when it is possible. usually 2 at a time.

A dog wags his tail with his heart.

May I always be the kind of person that my dog thinks I am.

Mine are Australian Cattle Dogs. The funny thing is that their mom would play with about anything. When we were in a herding trial at the Specialty one year she started out to get the cattle, saw a stick, and came running back with it to play fetch. Talk about embarassing.

You need to tell your Lab that they were bred to retrieve.

Lol, I thought mine was the only one. What kinds of dogs do you have? Mine is a Labrador, you know, the playful, happy-go-lucky dogs? Not mine! She is very serious, so much so that when I'm out working with her people hesitate to come up to her. She's not mean, of course, but people are put off by the very serious look on her face. And retrieve something? How dare I even think such a thing, lol Quite the character. Have a good evening.

My dogs have never wanted to play with any toys, either. Venture will take stuffed toys (and I mean TAKE from anywhere he finds them) and gently squeeze them, but that is as far as it goes. He brought a tennis ball to me a few months ago and I thought he was going to try retrieving it, but he just watched it go away.

Wrestle on the floor, lots of tug-of-war, hugs, and kisses. The two play so much with each other and get quite rambunctious. I don't walk them as much as I should because of my fear of falling. They both are so strong. When DH is home, we take them more often.

Since my DH has been in a nursing home to recover from surgery and get strong I've been taking the dogs in to see him. Nickie could care less but she is old. Jacob just loves to visit everyone. The more the merrier. Missy and Teddy like to go see daddy and everyone else who will pay attention to them.

In the past we have done several things with our dogs; confirmation, obedience, carting, herding, therapy visits, parades, etc.

Now we are mostly just doing rally or obedience stuff, and teaching new tricks. I am thinking about getting back into carting, because I think Phoenix would love doing it. He loves having a job!

We do a lot of stuff to work on obedience/rally, whether we are setting up some jumps for them to go over; working on distractions; teaching new commands/skill sets. We like to keep their minds stimulated as much as possible

Because my dog Galette is a guide dog, she gets to do whatever I do, go wherever I go. Having said that, she simply sleeps while I'm working out on the treadmill, a fact I think is completely unfair, lol. We do enjoy taking long walks whenever the weather permits, and she loves running around for long periods when I'm out in the back yard with her. I think she would probably enjoy agility, though I haven't explored this option with her as of yet. I do have one challenge with er. Though she adores running to release stress/energy, I have yet to find a toy she wants to play with. When I first got her, I thought I must be doing something wrong. After all, what dog doesn't play? As time has gone on I have realized that her form of play is to go out in the back yard and have me pretend i'm going to chase her. She then runs around growling and play-barking and ccarrying on for half an hour, lol. I did also find that she likes hide-and-seek, so we play that when the weather is too bad to go outside. Great topic. I think that getting exercise with our dogs is a great way to help us in our weight loss and health journeys, but it's also great for our four-legged companions. Take care.

Joy and family

I have a GSD and we do everything together, even sleep. Our favs are hiking, playing at the beach, she goes on my runs with me and I take her bike riding. We are getting ready to start Schutzund training! Fun fun!

Good question. I can't think of much. We play tug but that's about it. Indoors, Ela is a lazy butt. Sleeps and sleeps and sleeps some more. But outside she's a different dog. She goes crazy - it's a joy to watch her go! She and I walk a lot. She's the happiest though, playing with her friends on our walks.
She comes with on my runs. Will run with me just fine unless we're doing laps. She gets bored going round and round and she simply refuses to move. emoticon

I don't do anything with my guys anymore(they're 14), but we used to do obedience and herding. Now they are couch potatoes unless we go for walks and those are not fast.

My dogs like a floppy toy (no squeakers-they scare one of my dogs). I run around the house and they have to get it from me. Of course then they shake it about, drop it and it starts all over again. Gets all of us a good workout, especially when the weather isn't nice.

Hi all,

I have a moderately active jack russell (yes, he's not crazy-hyper) who is willing to try anything as long as I'm there to convince him it's ok. He's a great motivator for me, too. Other than the daily walk, do you guys have any other, maybe even nontraditional, exercises/activities you do with your dog? I'm looking to compile a list of things either to try or to do more regularly with my dog, and I'll start with a couple I have found rewarding:

1) Agility training - requires me to run with him and keep up, and he seems to like it alright (not his favorite)

2) Earthdog trials - more exercise for him than me, but it gets me out and walking/moving some. He LOVES it.

Anything else you do? Can be indoor, outdoor, goofy, a real sport, an imaginary sport - whatever! I'm just looking for more fun things to try with my dog, and get myself some more exercise/activity as well. All for a more active lifestyle for BOTH of us!

Cheers and thanks,
~star
