I don't understand the barcode scanner.

I sometimes scan a barcode and get a single result that is not correct. How can it be wrong. That is, presumably when the store where I bought this item scanned it, they got it right. How can a wrong item get associated with a barcode?

Second, once I scan an item and get a list which does not contain the item, and I add it, can I be sure that what I've added will be associated with the barcode and then shared with other SparkPeople? Seems the way to get the database larger and correct.

I very much like the SparkPeople approach to user added items when it asks users to vote on whether the item is correctly described. I wonder, however, how this information is used, or how a user can learn that some voters have described the item as incorrectly described.

Comments anyone -- comments from SparkPeople?

I agree with pegjs1 100% MFPs database and ease of scanner use is great.. really disappointed in that function in the sparkpeople Android App. I like everything else in SP mostly better but DATA is the most important factor. Please get your scanner to work as effortlessly as MFP and you will convert me.

If it is difficult to find food or enter it the tool will not be used.

2nd suggestion is unit conversions and dual volume / weight units. If an item is entered for a serving size of 1 fl oz, I should be able to enter consumption as 1 Cup or even 1 qt and not have to enter it as 8 fl oz or 32 fl oz. Likewise some people use weight and not volume to measure. When entering a new item I should be able to tell it that 1 cup = 250gm . The the app should not care if I enter 1C, 1 Qt, 200 gm or 75 ml, it should be able to do the conversion.

Years ago there ( ~ 1997) was a PC application that ran in Netscape Navigator called DietWatch . It did an good job of handling unit conversions and had a great database also. Dietwatch still exists as a company but they have switched to a fee based model and host based data only.

Same here! Really like SparkPeople for the more detailed reports, larger community, recipes etc. BUT I've been using MyFitnessPal for almost fours months, and will not give it up since it's food database is incredible! I have only found a few items that did not return a results. I will continue to use MFP until SP can get their database better populated, OR programs the app to allow users to scan/add a food item to the database for ALL members to use. I scanned two items at work just now, and neither of them returned a result. MFP, came right up.

Come on Spark--you're almost there! : )

Thank you for the tip on using Google Goggles. How do I get what was scanned into my nutrition tracker?

I'll try Google Goggles (try saying that fast three times). The app you included the link to is the one that with which I was having problems. It would scan, vibrate like it recognized the item, but then just returned to the Diet & Food app without registering anything.

Hi Everyone,
I talked to SparkPeople support and this is what they said is supposed to happen when the barcode scanner is used:
1. Scan food
2. Results come up, which may or may not include the food you actually scanned
3. If desired food is in the list, you click the food. This brings up the "add a food" box.
4. The add a food window works just like it does on the website, with the option to select serving size, etc, and adds the food to your day.
(If the food is NOT on the list, you search for it by name, just like you would normally search for a food without the barcode scanner.)

I also talked to a friend of mine who uses the SparkPeople android app as well and she was getting the scanner to work just fine. She said it was using Google Goggles as the barcode scanning app already on her phone. It's free and I just went and downloaded it and now the scanner works great and just like SparkPeople support said it would!!!

SparkPeople support also said you can download a free scanner app here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.zxing.client.android

Well ok - I must be in Lala land today. I didn't even realize that the barcode scanner icon I clicked inside the SparkPeople app used 3rd party software. I do have ShopSavvy on my phone and now that I look at it it's definitely using it. I originally thought that SparkPeople implemented their own additional software to the android app to offer the new scanner feature. Guess not. One thing I do know is that somewhere inside the SparkPeople web site I created a "list" earlier this week and when I ran the scan that list showed up as an option. So they are inter-connecting and working together it seems so you may want to try the ShopSavvy app. I just don't know how to access that list again inside SparkPeople to gain access to the scans I made.

P.S. Thanks JOANNLAB for your reply :~)

What scanner apps are you guys using? The behavior that Angela describes is what I see with ShopSavvy. The app I was trying to use unsuccessfully is simply called Barcode Scanner v3.72

I am not sure how the bar scanner is supposed to work exactly. I know it is in beta but I can't seem to find any instructions or anything to follow. So the below is what I can make work so far. I hope it helps answer some questions even though I will raise a few more :~) I open the Diet & Calorie tracker and go to the Food tab then click on the Barcode Scanner icon in the top left corner. It pulls up the scanner then I scan the barcode of a product. I did Jif peanut butter and it came up with a proper result. Then I clicked the Options button in the top right corner and it allowed me to edit the name or image of the product. Then I clicked the Save icon in the bottom left of the screen and it allows you to save it to a list that already exists or create a new one. I created a list and then I just clicked on the list and it moved the product into it. So I can get that far. But now I don't know how to find that list! And I don't know how to get it from the list into the Food section so it can count as part of that days calories either!

I wish we had the capability to enter the product name once we have scanned a bar code. That way it would save to the data base instead of scanning something and getting "scan results- experimental" and then have 100 things show up that are not even close to what you are eating.

Very frustrating.

I cannot get the barcode scanner to work. I use an app called simply, Barcode Scanner and when I scan, it beeps as if in recognition, but then just returns to the Today screen. I have a Droid X with Gingerbread.

Not having that problem on my Droid X. After a scan is complete the app simply opens a list that looks like a search on a keyword. Occasionally the product is in the first page or two of offerings, but just as often not.

I have a droid 3 and have not been able to get the barcode scanner to work. I would love, Love, LOVE to use it and would start scanning absolutely everything. I select the barcode, it opens barcode scanner, I scan the item, it says item found, then it restarts the SP app and never imports the information.

Anyone have similar issues or possible solutions?

I'm with you Doug, if there is a way I can make it better.. Sign me up. My wife uses another app that has the barcode scanner and it seems to be working great for her. I'm just not willing to change apps at this point since I've been here for so long.

Although, will say... I have had some success with the scanner... It is limited though.

I've tried on a few items. In each case, when I could get the scanner to read the code, I got back a list of possible matches, none of which were the actual item scanned. I wonder if the scanner is getting the whole code or just a fragment -- would that cause the problem? Or is it that a unique code has multiple matches in the database? The barcode scanner is a great addition. How can we make it better?

The Bar code scanner became available as an update to the app in the beginning of October. The developer advised that the scanner will become better with more people using it, so keep trying. I'm noticing improvement already. :)

The barcode scanner is in the latest install. It works with the barcode scanner installlled from the market. The real issue is there are not very many foods found in the list with barcode. hopefully the list will grow.

Lets see if we can get the powers that be to look at this forum and add a barcode scanner functionality so that we can scan our food items into our food diaries, instead of manually entering the nutritional info.

I just came here looking to see if there were any plans to add a bar code scanner to the spark app. I am also trying out the My Fitness Pal website/app and they DO have the bar code scanner. It is so much easier to get accurate info with the scanner. I don't understand why spark doesn't have it. Doesn't look like anyone in charge is even looking at the forum here, though.

I'm amazed and happy to learn so many things here! I have only had my phone since Oct., and am still learning things about it. I have a bar code scanner, but did not realize it could be used to scan the bar codes on food labels. I agree: that would be a terrific addition to SP! I have never heard of an app that would allow you to scan a barcode, so I would be *totally* interested in this app having it. Talk about easy! :) Please consider bringing this to the app! :)

Is there any reason not to update your app and add barcode scanning for input and a shopping list? I love sparkpeople and want to keep track of my info there mainly using the droid app. But I do love the other programs barcode scanning. Double entry would be a pain...Pretty please?????? Love your app just begging for things that would make it the best.

Blessings!

I would be absolutely thrilled if the SparkPeople app would include barcode scanning for food! The nutrition information would be much more accurate than simply entering it in manually. Plus, the selection of foods (especially specialty foods) would increase, giving you that much more of a chance to find off-brands or regional items. I would like to be fully committed to SP's app and Nutrition Tracker, but I've found that FatSecret's Calorie Counter app does all of this, and will continue to use it until SP revamps their app.

We all dig something that digs at us.

Barcode scanning is a must! It is the reason I still use Calorie Counter by fatsecret. You can not be that app in terms of ease of food entry, but this app has everything else! Please don't make me have to double input.

That is the only thing this application is missing. Barcode scanning!
There is another app I am using only because it does have that feature. If this app adds it then I can use this one exclusively!
