My exercise this week has also given my dogs a lot of fun, as we've been walking every day but one. I didn't think I'd done much, but it all adds up.

May 9 - 60 min.
May 10 - 60 min.
May 11 - 50 min.
May 12 - 20 min.
May 13 - no exercise
May 14 - 55 min.
May 15 - 65 min.

Total for the week - 310 minutes. emoticon

Thank you for the great suggestions! I don't know why, but somehow I've gradually stopped counting those other forms of exercise such as stretching exercises, dancing to music, throwing the ball for my dogs to chase etc....When I began with Spark People I always used to make sure I planned the following two days' meals in advance, but again, I've gradually let that slip.

I'm now going to my nutrition page to work out tomorrow's meals - with a lot more enthusiasm than I have when I just drift from breakfast to lunch, then have to try to find something for dinner which will keep me within my calorie allowance whilst also making sure my nutritional needs are taken care of.

that is great but remember it doesn磘 always have to be all out exercise or an all or nothing attitude too.you can simply downplay the exercises do some stretching if you are having a bad day.swimming or aqua aerobics or walking on a mini trampoline are easy and light on the joints, simply dancing to a couple of songs on the radio now and then.every little bit counts.if there are times when exercise is a total no no(there will be times sometimes)there is still stuff you can do like meditation or visulisation where you can visulise being thin etc.you can use the time you would normally exercise to plan your food menu and shopping list for next week,or do some more reading on a healthy lifestyle, fitness, health etc.you can be extra vigulamce on what you eat or do something for the soul, read the quran or have a bath.even trying your hair in a differant style are none exercise things that can boost your self confidence and body image.remember where there is a will there is a way.you can do this.have faith in you like allah has face in us.

Thank you for your reply - I admit I hadn't taken all the supervision or medical help available to those Biggest Loser contestants. I was watching the show last night, and to see the change in attitudes of some of the younger contestants (the current Australian season of BL features parent-child couples) who had more or less given up on living a healthy life, going out with friends, and so on because they were so overweight. It may have taken quite a while for them to revise their opinions on the benefits of exercise, but it is wonderful to see the smiles on their faces once they have finished their workouts which have replaced the tears and constant cries of 'I can't'.
You are such an example of what it is possible to achieve by determination and focus, and just reading your post has made me take a good hard look at the way I can find excuses for not having even tried to exercise on the not so good days. It is cold and rainy outside, so I was going to give exercising a miss today (again), but now I will find some indoor workout videos and do at least 30 minutes, and if the rain stops later, take my dogs for a good long walk.

for us to do all the exercise at their sizes at home would not be very healthy or wise but remember there at the biggest loser it is done under strict suppervision with medical help around at all times and frequent check ups before challenges etc.it is amazing what the human body can do when the will is there i know when i was younger and competeing i would sometimes work out for up to 6 hours even when my body was bone tired you somehow manage because the will is stronger than the body.inshallah we will all know where our limit is but never forget we often underestimate our own strength.my dr is always amazed by what i do she often say磗 if she had all my problems she wouldn磘 even get out of bed lol.life is what we chose to make it.

I am trying to stay motivated to get some exercise each day, specially walking because it helps with the osteoarthritis in my knees, hips and ankles. I am lucky to have two dogs who both enjoy walking with me, so on days when my motivation is lacking, those two disappointed faces when I say 'no walk today' make me feel guilty enough to change my mind. I also remind myself that Allah (swt) gave me two legs to use, not to allow to stiffen through lack of use.

When I first joined Spark People I was sure there was no exercise I was capable of doing, but there are many beginner exercise routines in the SP chair exercise videos, and also a big variety on youtube. From there I gradually progressed to walking, although it was painful at first, until my muscle strength increased.

I too enjoy watching The Biggest Loser, but the Australian version. I am always motivated by seeing the efforts those contestants go to in order to lose their excess weight - sometimes I wonder if all that exercise is really healthy when the person is so very overweight and not at all used to exercising. What do you think?

Assalaamu alaykum I have started over again and am motivated by watching the biggest looser and loosing it with jillian. I thought it'd be great to do 10 mins a day but realised I could do so much more seeing how those people are pushed in those programmes!

As salam alaikum Sister Karima,

Thanks for all that great advice, will check out your suggestions, isa, and see what works best for me. I love the way you describe your background which elaborates on your natural drive to athleticism. You are so right that we are not in competition with each other, but only with ourselves to try to sustain or improve on where we are. So well said!

I also remembered yesterday (while vacuuming) that housework counts as exercise, so felt uplifted that exercise can sneak into your daily routine without our knowing it.

May Allah, swt, guide us all to encourage each other to achieve our goals and overcome our personal obstacles.

ma'a salama

Sister Winnie

assaalamu alaik kum sister winnie.first welcome back and inshallah with allahs guidence and your comittment you will find an exercise that is suitable for you.if you go to the spark teams on my page you will find a link to the chair exercise team they are a really friendly bunch and you can get lots of help and ideas there i joined it when i did my miniscus in a few years back but renewed joining in after my brain operations when it was very limited what i should do.easy exercises to start with are simple chair marching or chair dancing other exercises which make it easy oin joints etc are swimming ,exercises with trapoline, like marching on the spot the trampoline works like a shock absorber on the joints and exercise done on a stability ball.crunches etc for abs are a lot easier with the ball.stretching of all forms are good and not to strenous, pilates, yoga(begginners)or any debra mazda videos as they are all on the principal of having one foot on the floor at all times.walking is easy on the joints can go at your own speed, cost nothing and you can get out to get some fresh air and enjoy the beauty of nature inshallah.when first starting and to help stress and good for days when exercise for what ever reason is not an option you can always do meditation or even autogenics training.as you say any little bit helps.if you need any more sugestions or help let me know.to most people my exercise minutes are high while to me they are low as i only do about 2 hours a day now.remember before i was an athelete and had competed when younger for my country so like you said we are all at differant levels.we should also try not to beat other but to substain or improve on our own best.inshallah allah will guide our way.know i am proud of you love that despite limitations you are not giving up but moving forward and leading the way.

As salam alaikum dear sisters,

So what is your personal limitation in regards to fitness. Some of our members are so active and are excellent role models. They should not deter you, if you like me, cannot even come close to their activities. We must remember that Allah, swt, has created us all different, and will put us through trials with our health, and our minds and that the important thing is to remember to thank Him for all these experiences.

Work within your own personal limits. Right now, I am at a zero, so anything I do will be an improvement. Though I am not confined to a chair, I think my best bet it to start off with exercises that can be done while sitting. Any ideas? I also, will take things gradually, slowly, think of a turtle or snail and slow them down. Still I recognize that any effort is an improvement and therefore positive.

What are your limitations and how do you plan to work within them. Are they mental or physical or both. Remember that only with Allah's help can we hope to progress.

May Allah, swt, bless you all and guide us all to being the best we can be.

Ma'a salama

Sister Winnie
