It is a fine line between too much protein and not enough..... I had the same thing happen and I backed off some of the protein and it was enough to return my numbers there to normal, but I still watch to make sure I don't have too much.....

Trouble is, when you take out some of the protein, you have to replace it with carbs or fat..... or you don't get enough calories..... Like a said, a fine line.....

I sure hope your ultra sound goes ok..... Best wishes to you and please keep us informed....

If I can get it lower by my May 1 appointment, I probably won't have to start any medications. So this is one of my goals. It's frustrating to not know if I'm doing the right things as time ticks by, the one guideline I came across said that if I can keep my after meal blood sugars below 140 I could likely remain on a diet and exercise only treatment plan.

So I will have to experiment and see. It's better than waiting around!

Many people do random testing and get some valuable information that way.

In addition, if you are not sure about a food, try testing before you start eating, then again 2 hours after your first bite (not after you finish eating) because the sugars start to rise with the first mouthful of food.....

You should be able to tell if that oatmeal causes your sugars to spike, or that slice of brea or plate of mashed potatoes..... You will get some ranges and can determine from them what foods are ok and which ones should be eaten sparingly....

Good luck to you. It sounds like you are doing quite well.....

All was good. Doctor did up my metformin. I now will be taking one in the morning and continuing with taking two with dinner. Making a my mg total 1500 a day. Other meds are phentermine, hydrochlorozide, Vit. D3, Krill Oil, Cinnamon plus Chromium.
I get in 30 min. or more of exercise every other day. It all depends on how I feel for making it everyday. I try to keeps my total carbs for the day at 135g for the day. I do eat flour products. I have been cutting back on how much bread I eat in the day.
My snacks usually are a piece of fruit or a glass of milk. I'm not sure if my numbers rise over night. My care team really hasn't talked to me about a set testing schedule, so mine all have been what I call random.
For example: Jan. 27 8:07 AM 97; Jan. 29 10:17 AM 108; Jan. 31 11:14 AM 111; Feb. 2 12:17 PM 111; Feb. 4 12:27 PM 125. Feb. 4th's test was about 45 min. after eating 2 cups of cubed watermelon. My fasting morning numbers run 97-109.
Yeah, some days it hard for me to stay away from the foods that I really don't need to be eating. One day at a time, one step at a time, never give up is my motto. :)

5.8 is not so bad. Are you on oral meds or just diet and exercise alone?

As far as diet goes, how much have you limited the carbs you eat? Do you eat white flour products? (bread, pasta, etc) Do you always have a bit of protein with your snacks?

How are your fasting sugars in the morning? Does your number rise overnight?

When you have done everything you can to tweak your diet, don't be afraid to go on insulin. It can be a great help in keeping your numbers down....

I resisted for a couple of years, kept telling my doctor, "just one more chance......" but now that I do take insulin, I wish I had not put it off so long..... The only thing I regret, though, is that once I was on insulin, I kind of went crazy with the diet using insulin to keep my numbers down instead of sticking to the way I knew I should eat.....

Wishing you all the best. Let us know how you get along......

5.8 as of 1/27/15. Diagnosed 3 years ago at 6.2. Have been treating with metformin, diet, and exercise. I'm a little worried that I might get told I have to start shots. I see the doc on the 4th. Hopefully doc will agree to waiting three more months and see if the numbers go down again.

As of December 2014 my a1c was 5 started the year out at 9.8 (and had been around that number going on 11 years) so I say a good drop for a years time period, I know my endro was pleased with it.

Don't look at insulin as a negative. I had been a diabetic for 13 years before I started insulin, and I felt much better after I started using it. My readings became consistent and I felt much better physically. You may be doing everything correctly but you may need a little help with the insulin to keep within whatever blood sugar levels your doctor instructs.

When they found out about the change with the insulin was after I had surgery. I had to have insulin when I was in the hospital and I did so well with it, I could tell there was a difference in how I felt while I was on it. So, give it a chance.

Hiya,
I'm starting over due to some health issues that got in the way with consistency..

I checked my sugar this morning 3x and im not that happy how the med works.. instead of bringing my glucose down it went right up.. so im not sure what this means..
Have to do a little more research and ask some questions...
Was 8,7.. after eating and taking (metformine 1000mg) went up to 11,4?????

I take 2500mg a day in total...

success all in your goals..

well friends
as i read back into my advice my doc has changed all that for me he is an endo and apparently thinks most of my low dropouts (five in seven days recently) is because i am holding it too close and he wants it up between 6 and 7..i'll see if i can do that for sure..the longer i am diabetic the harder it is it seems but i need to make sure i can really get up and walk around lol
so working on that..know we are all different and celebrate those differences for sure

March's blood draw showed an A1c of 6.6, which my doctor thought was a good level. But from what I have been reading here, some of you are even in the 5's, which is terrific. I know that if I exercised regularly it would lower both my blood glucose and my cholesterol, but I have a very hard time exercising as I have Fibromyalgia and chronic pain resulting from three car accidents in recent years. If anyone has any practical suggestions for lowering my A1c please send a Sparkmail. Thanks!

carbs vary depending on what your doc says is right for you the a1c is a three month rating telling you where you blood suagrs stand (as opposed to daily tests) it is predicated on the life of a red blood cell and the span there is approximately three months..it is a most accurate tale of how well you have kept your blood sugars under control
most diabetes docs want it 6 and under..diabetiox who just sometimes think about testing and being diabetic run from 7 and on up and give the diabetes docs fits because higher numbers are extremely damaging..when i was first diagnosed i was 16..and that was nearly 20 years ago when testing the a1c was realtively new i am on the straight and narrow and try to stay there maintaining for over a yea now in the 5's

some days are better than others and its not always easy but i never quit trying for sure

Well, I was supposed to go to the doctor next month but ended up going sooner. You can read my latest blog if you like but my doc decided to do and A1C and fbs.

My A1C was up from last time but I thought I did pretty good since it included Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.

A1C was 5.8
FBS was 86

You are dead right asprin etc.
After reading your comment I got thinking I go to Townsville Hosp (10hr car drive away) once every six mths I could see if I can get an appointment with the diabetic specialist then I will have to look into it. Unfortunately I live in a remote town and any drs worth there salt will not come here. So we are stuck with Mr. Panadol.

What is panadol? Is it like aspirin, tylenol or ibuprofen?

Thank you for your advise Christine. I will certainly give it a try next time. Our dr is called by the locals "take 2 panadol and lie down" Its a shame we do not have an alternative.

MATEYMATE1,
Next time you have your labs done and you see your doctor, ask him/her what the results were and ask specifically where he/she want you to be. Let the doctor know you want to be in a "partnership" in keeping the diabetes under control, but you need info to let you know your A1c, cholesterol and any other levels they can advise you to keep under control. Most doctors are willing to work with their patients if the patients let the doctors know they are interested. A lot of times if you call in with a true emergency after that discussion, you may get more attentive care. Give it a try.

I have just had by bloods done and my A1C was 7.1 my dr does not discuss any of my bloods with me and I have to ask the clinic for a copy otherwise I would not know at all.
I cannot change dr as I live in a remote area and only have a dr for 2 half days a week.

I see my DR every 3 months with an A1C done just prior. Additionally, my company makes available at no charge a health information service, and they sent me a kit to do A1c's in between my Dr visits. I just sent the sample off yesterday so it will be interesting to see what the results are (I put a blood sample on a special card, so I guess they are able to come up with a result from that).

I just had my blood counts done and my A1c was 7.0. After my doctor and I went over the results (actually they were very good), she let me know that she wanted my A1c to be 6.2 or lower.

How often do you have your A1c readings done? My doctor sees me every four months and my labs are done just before my appointment with my doctor.
