I agree that it is good that people are getting educated, but as with everything, some people just get misinformed. My boss, who is a very smart woman, tells me that after I'm gluten free for a while, my body will heal itself and I won't be "allergic" to wheat anymore. I tried to explain that I don't have an allergy, I have an autoimmune disease, but she wasn't hearing it... she read an article!

That is absolutely marvelous. There is a lot out there. I'm sorry the driver/daughter were jerks about her food allergies; she will meet a lot of them. Most people wish to learn, so keep telling her to share...when asked. lol emoticon

Just wanted to keep you updated on how things were going for dd. Same bus driver went on another volleyball trip. Never apologized but left her alone and so did driver's daughter. That restaurant was too nervous to recommend stuff except the fries and she had a milkshake. Was fine when she got home. She went on another trip 2 days later with another driver who is good about leaving her alone as her own daughter has a different food allergy and is younger than dd. Went to Subway and the guy who helped her followed her directions precisily. Had a good evening.

I know what your daughter is going through. 60 years ago people did not know about gluten.
Mom would give Wheaties/Cherrios/Corn Flakes, fruit, toast, in whole milk..I'd be sick the whole day. Sweats, hives, nausea and Milk of Magnesia. Later Maloxx, Mylanta, Tums.

see my blog..food allergies galore.

Do homemade tuna, chicken and ham salad...commercial contains wheat flour and corn starch. She's 14 grippy age' have her make her own lunches. Maybe this will give her a start.
If eating out with friends...dont' eat the bread nor breaded items...FF has sugar on them for browning.

good luck.

For right now it's a "secret recipe" I'll ask her if she'll share with you guys. The bus driver's boss talked to her about crossing boundries. I noticed the woman avoiding me at the last home game. I have to see her Wednesday and I hope she'll be more comfortable. We have to deal with "know it alls" all the time. The same weekend as the bus incident dd's Sunday school teacher brought in doughnuts knowing full well it sends dd to restroom ill. Not the 1st year she's had her. Some of the other teachers in the room are more caring having lactose intolerence and they make an effort to make dd more comfortable. When dh has a better check, perhaps in a couple of weeks I plan on asking the nicer teachers if she can bring a treat for the class and have her bring in a fruit plate. So grateful for all of you and I'll keep an eye out for her feeling ill after a shower. That could be helpful later.
I did try to find information on the Mayo site and couldn't about feeling ill with wheat allergy. Do you know what it might be under? I also tried the food allergy network but you have to join them now.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's troubles. I agree, printing info and sharing it with those around her is probably the best course of action. She'll probably have to deal with it the rest of her life. My mom once ordered GF from a restaurant and they brought out her salad with croutons on it. She pointed it out right away and asked for a new salad. The waitress said, "can't you just take off the croutons?". My mom told her no, it was cross-contamination. She said the waitress rolled her eyes and took the salad away. My mom ended up not eating it because she didn't trust that the waitress got a new salad. She had a feeling the croutons were just picked off.

But awesome news on your daughter getting 2nd place! Good for her!

I agree with this anger at odd know-it-alls. Sometimes I act like I am one. Hopefully I can learn from my mistakes and get called onto the mat for it as she may want to re-inform that bus driver. The concern was real even if that advice wasn’t. The social education of wheat issues is in the news and in our friends symptoms; this socially growing informed society is in our benefit. We do better with that grain of salt and knowing what works for self.

I am not celiac but must not go by the celiac guidelines because I found other intolerances beyond just gluten. Through this awesome team I was able to find my gluten issues with my many other possible allergies and intolerances besides; thanks, Team.

I recently challenged this gluten intolerance in the form of an organic shampoo with wheat proteins. Well that nausea found me and the anxiety was real after just one tablespoon of shampoo that was quickly rinsed out. The puffy fingers also told a part of the story. I may not need to be rushed to the hospital for gluten shock like a true extremely sensitive celiac but I am so much more aware of gluten when it finds a way in me or on me. I will buy a different organic shampoo; one without wheat protein.

Awesome daughter, tell her we said so.

For those who have been helping me with dd I got some good news today. We live in SE Idaho and she submitted some brownies the the open class gluten free contest. She placed second in which she competed against both adults and children. It's her own recipe and the 1st one she has put together gf. There was only a handful of entries as this is the 1st year there was a gf competition. It was so great to see such joy when she found out her red ribbon didn't mean she didn't do well as in 4-H but she truly has taken a hold of something that changed her life and did something positive with it. We are so lucky to have all of you supporting her when others can be so cruel. emoticon

Actually, stress makes allergies more active and profound.

Thanks all of you. I will let dd know there is someone here who also has wheat allergy and they too get nausia. I will look at the sight and make copies for dd, the head of buses, and the superintendant. It's funny that her stress from this allergy goes way down in the summer when it's less likely for people to butt in about her allergy. I realize these well meaning people are speaking to her from their hearts but it sounds more like they have their heads packed in another part of their anatomy.

If it were me I would print off from Mayo Clinic about Wheat allergies. When the bus driver butts her nose in have your daughter give it to her. Tell her to tell the bus driver perhaps she would like to learn more about her condition before she starts treating it. I would also give the superintendent a copy and have them educate the driver too. There is no need for the driver to but her nose in where it does not belong.

The nausea is not in her head. I have a wheat allergy (not celiac) and I get it too. I also get terrible tummy pains and fatigue. There is a special name for the wheat allergy that causes hives but I'm afraid is escapes me right now. I'm sure if you googled it you would find it. Would getting a note from your doctor to give to the bus driver help? Maybe he/she would believe it if they see it in black and white.
I'm so sorry you're daughter has to go through this. It's hard enough trying to live with the allergy, she doesn't need people making it harder.
Blessings.

That nausea is not in her head because then it is in my head too because when I get around the bread isle I get nausea from smelling it. You should also complain to the school about it and inform them that she knows how to order her food and she is old enough to know what she can and can't eat.

Dorothy

If you tell God no because He won't explain the reason He wants you to do something, you are actually hindering His blessing. But when you say yes to Him, all of heaven opens to pour out His goodness and reward your obedience. What matters more than material blessings are the things He is teaching us in our spirit.

DD has a wheat allergy. Not celiac's, but hives when eating wheat. She is 14 and a freshman who plays sports for a very small highschool in a very small town. We had to quit using the school kitchen recently which I blogged about on this site recently and now the occational bus driver for her team tells her the nausa she feels in some restaurants is all in her head. She and others try to tell her they know others with her condition. They have decided without a medical degree she has celiac's. Her allergist says her rashes are due to a wheat allergy. They try to tell her how to order her food even though she's been doing it without their help for nearly 2 years now. She got fed up with the bus driver and ordered a milkshake and went to the bus. She came home starved. Thankfully I fixed Spanish rice for dinner. Not sure how she is to handle this without getting in trouble for talking back. If the bus driver calls me to complain about her I plan on letting her know dd can order without her help. Grrrrrrrrrrr. emoticon
