I did do it!! I got up and did 20 minutes on the trainer yesterday so I met the 30 day challenge. When I first read the challenge, I didn't think there was any way I could do it. But I made an effort to squeeze it in even when I didn't have a lot of time and/or the weather was bad. Did my spinning class tonight so guess I have a good start on the next month.

Anyone want to do another challenge for May--either like this or some variation? It does help keep me motivated!.

Monday I really didn't feel like riding since I had already done two classes at the Y. But I did manage to push myself to get about 30 minutes in on the trainer.

Today I managed to dodge the raindrops for the most part and got 10 miles in. Tomorrow will be tricky as I have to go to an all day meeting. Maybe this non-morning girl will have to get up and do a little riding on the trainer first thing. Then I will have made it through the month!

It was much warmer today (about 60) than yesterday, but still very windy. I got in a ride of 12 miles. Most of it was very pleasant except for when I was headed into the east wind, which was pretty stiff and noticeably slowed me down.

Unless something changes, the rest of the week is probably going to be indoor riding, as we are expected to have quite a bit of rain in the next few days.

Janice--I will have to check into that. We only have one real bike shop in the immediate area but there is also a place that recycles/rebuilds bikes and the people there seem really cool.

I did watch and do a minimal amount of helping while DBF changed my tire. Don't think I could do it entirely by myself, but I have a lot better idea now. It was the tube that was trashed, the tire seems to be fine.

Thursday--I did my 30 minute high-intensity spin class
Friday--the day my tire was changed--just rode about 3.5 miles to make sure everything was good.
Saturday--Bike club ride of 16 miles round trip. This ride went much better on my new road bike than when I rode it with my old heavy bike a few times last year. It was a bit chilly but 9 of us hardy souls went out and it was really not too bad despite about 48 degree temp.

Anita--I hope it's nothing serious and just an over-use injury that will heal with a short rest. It would be terrible to get benched just when the season is gearing up.

Deb--does your LBS offer free classes on bike repair? I learned how to change/fix a flat at my LBS. It's not difficult to do and the tools don't cost much. I haven't had to fix a flat very often, so it's like learning all over again when it happens. I never leave home without my tools and a spare tube. I learned a valuable lesson 2 summer's ago when I was on a country road 9 miles from home and my rear tire blew out. I had nothing with me and no one to call, so I started walking home. About 5 minutes into the walk, 2 cyclists came by and had all the tools and a spare tube and put a temporary fix on the tire. Someone was definitely looking out for me, because I biked on that road often and had never seen another cyclist on it.

Saturday I'm going to Hancock, Maryland, to bike the Western Maryland Rail Trail. It's been years since I've been there. It's going to be a leisurely ride with time to stop and take pictures. Hope the rain holds off until we're done.

Anita--I hope that your dr appointment pinpoints the cause of your knee pain and that it is not as serious as you fear it is. I know I would be devastated if I couldn't ride for a long period of time.

Well my ride on Tues. got cut short due to a flat tire. I managed to get back home and the tire seems OK so I think it's just the tube. Tried pumping it up but it doesn't hold air. I have an extra tube but not the tools or knowhow to switch it out so I guess it will be a job for DBF this weekend. I blame the horrible potholes on the one road I went on--there is just no way to avoid them! Guess I will be avoiding that road in the future!

Yesterday I had my strength and abs classes at the Y so I just did 25 minutes on the trainer after I got home.

Maybe we can do another challenge of some kind either in May or as soon as more of us are feeling healthy!

MissG--you are NOT a bad leader because your doc forbids you from riding right now. I'm sure that you miss it and would be riding if you could. I'm just glad that you posted about the April 30 day challenge in the first place, because it has been VERY motivating for me!

Hang in there and you will be riding soon!

Pam--Sorry you missed your bike ride this weekend but I'm sure there are plenty more good days coming up. Good that dd is getting back on her feet and gradually getting back to normal.

I lucked out today and the rain held off long enough for me to get a 10 mile ride in before I went to the Y. Forecast is not great for the rest of the week so not sure how many more outdoor rides in the next few days. So far so good though!

Deb, my DD, who is a senior in H.S. is recovering from mono, and hubby and I like to include her in exercise, when she feels like exercising. She didn't feel well enough for a bike ride so we went for a walk with her Saturday and Sunday at Genysis Hospital trails for a 3 mile walk each day. Glad to hear how your bike rides are going... Keep on cyclin'!!

Hope everyone had a blessed Easter!!

Pam--Hope you and hubby had a good ride this weekend!

DBF and I ended up riding about 24 miles on Sat. afternoon. Just a tad cooler and windier than we would have liked but still a good ride. We ate out with another couple afterwards.

Today weather was absolutely perfect and I got a 10+ mile ride in after church and before I went to my parents' for late dinner.

Hope everyone had a great Easter!

Temps never got above mid-forties, but I bundled up and got 10 miles in today. Really not too bad except for when I was going in to the north wind.

Tomorrow DBF and I plan to go on a more extended ride with hopefully considerably warmer temps!

Ride on!

Did my 30 minute spin class at the Y last night. It is a high intensity class so pretty good workout. I am off today so hoping to ride outside although it is a bit cool, but at least sunny and not too windy.

On Sat. DBF and I are planning to ride a trail down by his house which would be a good long ride and supposed to be in low 60's.

I hope all of the ailing are recovering so can be back riding soon!

Thanks for the info. I will try a headband under my helmet and see if it all fits. Long underwear would be the most likely thing for me to wear under leggings or sweat pants.

Pam--I'm trying to be as dedicated as I can be. It was about 50 and sunny (although windy), but I was really thankful for wearing a headband under my helmet so my ears were covered! I wore leggings too and layers--way too cold for bike shorts and jersey! I really prefer it warmer--as I'm sure you do too!!

Anita--what a bummer about your knee! Hopefully if you take it easy for a couple days you can get back at it.

I did manage to do a short ride outdoors today--5.5 miles. Going into the wind was kind of brutal, but did OK otherwise.

Bad News I really do not want to drop out of the challenge so I am going to omit a couple of days, my knee is really giving me trouble, not sure what I did but it is so swollen and feels like a rod is going though it .. I got on the spinning bike and did a very very slow cadence almost like a slow motion spin.. so going to take a day or two off.. ugh..

Ride on everyone

Pam--That's great that you found a group that you can ride with at a reasonable pace. We have both fast and slow riders in our club. I'm somewhere in the middle, but hopefully faster this year with having an actual road bike.

Miss G--Sending positive thoughts your way!

I rode inside on the trainer today since the weather hovered in the 30's and I just don't like to ride in weather that cold. I did about 35 minutes.

In case anyone is interested, I read an article in my most recent Bicycling magazine with a bike-based shape up plan taken from a book called "Bike Your Butt Off". It is on-line too at www.bicycling.com/coreworkouts

Pam, I really like the no-drop rides. The only group I ride with are great people, but the leaders are in such amazing shape that everyone who can't keep up a minimum of 15mph on a steady uphill has given up the rides. It's too intimidating.

I am hoping that tomorrow I will get cleared for more activity. My back is feeling quite a bit better.

I used to ride in an organized bike group in Lennon, Michigan which is in Genesee County in the country (Flint being the closest biggest city), with my husband. He works in Detroit now and he works too late to go on the rides. There are Sunday rides but we go to church during that time, so we end up going on Saturdays by ourselves. We have a tandem, road and mountain bikes. I just found a ladies ride on Thursday P.M., a no drop ride, which I would need. LOL We average about 13 mph. It is a good incentive to get in better shape, and good to know that if you can't keep up, you won't get dropped.

Pam--Our bike club rides start in April-weather permitting. I am in southwest Michigan. What part of Michigan are you in? I just started with this bike club about a year ago and I really enjoy it! It is a great group of people and very well organized (they've been in existence 40 years!). We usually ride on Saturday and there are some people who also ride on Wed. evening although I don't because it is my Y night. We sponsor a century ride at the end of September. Our rides go into October, weather-permitting.

We are not far from Lake Michigan so we can have a fair amount of wind and we did have some on Sat. but not unbearable. I generally don't like to ride if it's under 50 and/or very windy. I assume you probably ride with a group or a club too? I actually met my boyfriend in the club so we have something in common that we like to do right there.

Weather was very spring-like and both Sat and Sun were good bike riding days since the rain that was supposed to come on Sunday held off. On Saturday we had over a dozen people on our bike club ride. Most of us (including me) rode a 14 mile loop. A few rode a shorter 8 miles. My DBF decided to go early and ride before the actual ride--so he had in 35 miles before we even started. Don't think I'm quite there yet.

Sunday, he and I went for a relaxing ride that ended up being about 10.5 miles. He adjusted the sensor on my bike computer so hopefully won't be knocking it out of kilter every time I transport the bike.

The weather has turned drastically colder today so probably no outdoor rides for the next 2-3 days. I thought we were done with this cold, yucky stuff!

I have been walk/jogging quite a bit but now that the weather is warming up, I am going to start biking. At the gym, I have doing the treadmill, but tomorrow will hop on the bike and see how I do. I will make sure to do strength training, especially to get my legs in shape for some major riding!

My back is definitely improving, though by evening I'm pretty achy and miserable. I don't know when I'll get to ride yet, but I'm following all doctor's orders so that when I do I won't reinjure myself!

Today was a beautiful day for a ride--only wish it could have been longer, but did get 7 miles in. And yes I finally figured out how to re-set for the ride on the bike computer-Duh!

Tomorrow is our first bike club ride and the weather is supposed to be as good or better than today. I can't wait!

Cheers to everyone who is participating in this challenge! It is really motivating to me.

Miss G-I hope you are coming along better with your back and can get back to riding and other fun stuff sooner rather than later.

I guess starting a challenge late is better than no challenge at all. This weekend is supposed to be great weather, so I hope to get out both days.

Took my touring bike into the LBS yesterday and had the fenders and racks installed, so now all I need are some warmer nights and a free weekend and I'll start bike camping.

4/6 - 13.8 miles

I got in a ride yesterday for 25 min. before I went to the Y to work out. Today I went to my high intensity, 30 min spinning class.

I agree it is just a matter of pressing the right buttons to get the trip info on the bike computer. It will probably end up being really easy once I figure it out (or boyfriend shows me how!).

Next two days are supposed to be really nice--sunny and 50's tomorrow and low 60's on Sat. Sat. is our first bike club group ride of the season so really looking forward to it.

Some days it is really tight getting some riding in. I did manage to dodge the impending rain on Mon. and get in about a 25 min. bike ride before I went to the Y. Yesterday I had a meeting after work so wasn't home till after dark and just rode the trainer for 30 mins. Supposed to be nice (in 50's) today so hopefully get a ride in tonight too.

Have not figured out how to make my bike computer re-set for each trip yet. Nice to have the cumulative, but really want to know how long each ride is too. There aren't that many buttons on it (it is a PlanetBike computer) so it shouldn't be that hard, but I am not very mechanically inclined in spite of reading directions.

Anita--don't think I have cadence on mine, although would not be surprised if DBF's does since his also shows things like the amount of gas saved, etc.

Very excited that I got my new bike computer this weekend and yesterday my boyfriend set it up for me. Our initial ride with it showed 13.5 miles. I love numbers so fun to see how far I had ridden and how fast I was going! The weather was actually pleasant and I worked up a bit of a sweat. Hills are still a challenge but SO much more doable on the lighter, faster road bike.

Recap for the month so far:

4/1--45 min on trainer
4/2--25 min bike ride
4/3--40 min stationary bike at Y
4/4--45 min on trainer
4/5--45 min on trainer
4/6--13.5 mile bike ride

Onward and upward!

Age is just a state of mind.

Ah, MISSG, so sorry about your back, both because it's keeping you more still than you'd like to be, and if you're like others I've known, it's crazy painful. We're all cheering for you. Take care!

MissG-that is really rotten about the bulging disc. I am sure that is a huge disappointment to you, but hopefully if you can manage to rest and rehab it, you can be back at the biking and other activities you enjoy.

Weather was cold, wet, and windy again today so my biking was on the trainer for 45 minutes. The bike club is actually supposed to have their first ride tomorrow, but it will still be only in the 30's so I think I will pass this time and ride indoors. Planning to ride outside on Sunday though with my boyfriend. It is supposed to be in the 50's--woo hoo!

The bike computer I ordered came in so going to have my boyfriend get it set up for me this weekend--can't wait!

I am OUT for the April challenge. And I just keep crying about it.

Monday, I tweaked my back, and Wednesday I went to the doctor, who sent me to physical therapy. Today? Today I am having a very bad day. I just got back from the physical therapist. She thinks I have a bulging disc. That means for now no biking, no lap swimming, no free weights, no running for now. I can walk at a moderate pace, walk in the swimming pool, and use the weight machines. Low weight, high reps for endurance. I'm completely devastated. She encouraged me that she thinks it's manageable, and that I can work back up to those things once we get the swelling out of the disc and build up my core. But I can't stop crying over the spring days I'm losing.

Windy, rainy, and chilly today so the stationary bike it was--40 mins. About 8 miles and 337 calories according to the readout.

Got my Pearl/Izumi cycling shoes today. Even though I ride a road bike, these are more like mountain bike shoes--I can actually walk in them. Haven't biked in them yet but wore them around the office today to get used to them. Very comfortable and actually pretty cute looking.

I also got the wraparound sport sunglasses I ordered. They are lightweight, seem to fit well, and should fit under my bike helmet.

It was windy out today, so I went to the fitness center after radiation therapy and road an Expresso bike for the first time. It's cool because you see different rides on the screen and you can steer the bike. It also tracks your rides on the computer. I think it will be fun on days when I don't want to ride outside.

Rides in April:
April 1: 1.5 miles/ 11.5 minutes
April 2: 4.6 miles/ 31.5 minutes
April 3: 1.3 miles/11 minutes

Okay, first, yay for new bikes and for recovering from radiation. I'm going to use my sunshine tonight to put peas in the ground, but I was planning to ride to work tomorrow, so maybe this is my call to make it a regular thing. I'm in! And I'm going to tune up my own bike www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness

2 days down--28 to go!

April 1--45 minutes on bike trainer
April 2--25 minute bike ride

So far the challenge is a good thing. Don't think I would've braved the low 40's (although sunny) weather otherwise.

Thanks Deb.

April 2nd. I got my ride done for the day. There is a road being built near where we live, it's paved, but not open to the public. Hubby and I rode on it toda for the first time. It's a perfect place to ride! Today's ride was 4.6 miles long and 31 minutes.

Rides in April:
April 1: 1.5 miles/ 11.5 minutes
April 2: 4.6 miles/ 31.5 minutes

Kay, you are very inspiring! If you are willing to give this challenge a try while still going through radiation, I certainly hope that I can overcome some less-than-stellar weather! Very glad that indoor riding counts as we have a couple rainy days coming up Thu/Fri.

Thinking I should receive the delivery of my new cycling shoes today! Can't wait!

We can all do this!

I had to think about this since I'm getting radiation treatment for breast cancer right now, but I think I'll go for it. I got my bike out yesterday (April 1) for the first time and pumped up the tires. Everything worked. I only rode 11 minutes and huffed and puffed the entire way. The weather here in Tennessee is good for riding now, so this is a perfect time for me to get back on the saddle.

Hubby and I are looking at some week-long organized rides to do over the summer while I build my strength back up. We hope to do a self-supported tour of the Pacific coast in the fall. It's what we planned to do last Sept., but I got diagnosed with cancer in late July and have been in treatment ever since.

This will be a challenge to keep riding daily through radiation, but even just a little bit will help improve my endurance.

I am also wondering about the riding indoors thing. I crashed and busted my shoulder badly five years ago and won't take the bike out til the ice has cleared but I did get a half hour and 8.5 miles in at the gym today. Checking out the 30 Days facebook page it appears that, yes, they DO count indoor riding as well. With that being said, I'm in!

I'm in--although with some trepidation because I think we will have a lot of "un-springlike" days this month. I too have the same question as Anita, does riding inside due to inclement weather count? I am reluctant to take my new road bike out in really nasty weather.

Since my bike is brand new (finally ridden the last 2 days!) it probably won't need a tune up real soon, although I do have a free tune up from the bike shop I bought it from, but need to ride it a bit first.

Count me in. I am up for both challenges,
I had a tune up in October so I am sure bike is still good but
I got to bring it in I need them to check someting, on it

also 30 days you got it, I was told by my doctor today who gave me the news
that I am officialy in menapause.. and that the weight is going to get harder to get off
which has been, so like I do with anything I am not going to let it win, it is going down and
with a fight.. so this will be part of my arnsal of riding my bike for the next 30 days,

Question can I count my spinning bike in on that? because I live in CNY.. and if we have 3 days of sunshine and no rain this month that would be a blessing

Ride on

At last we are reaching spring--at least I hope! Time to get back to challenges!

April challenge is to choose one or both of the following:

1. Get your bike into your LBS for a thorough tuneup;
2. Sign up for 30 Days of Biking and bike every day.

Here is the website:
30daysofbiking.com/

This is supposed to be a cool, rainy April, so taking on this challenge is a big deal, but I'm going to try it!
