Done! I rode 19.33 miles last night, which means I made into Clarkston, and pretty much blew right through it.

Where to next? There's a road that parallels the Snake River toward Hell's Canyon. I'll follow it for a while enroute Wallowa State Park near Enterprise, OR.

Clarkston to Wallowa State Park: 104.62 miles. Given the miles I rode last night and the ride into work today (9.14 miles), I'm already 25.64 miles into this trip. And the river is gorgeous.

19.47: 458.27 down, just 7.08 miles left. Paralleled the Alpowa Creek to its confluence with the Snake River. Just past Chief Timothy State Park, and I'm crusing along the Snake River, headed into Clarkston, Washington.

25.73 miles last night and this morning. 438.8 miles behind me, 26.55 to go. I passed Pomeroy five miles ago. About a decade ago, Pomeroy was the staging area for the effort to battle the School Fire. To this day, the damage is visible in the Blue Mountains. The little town of Pomeroy really stepped up to the task of hosting the fire crews and news media. (There were more people fighting the fire than there were residents of Pomeroy.) www.historylink.org/index.cfm?displa

I have also crossed the last summit and highest point (2660') of the trip: it is all down hill from here!

Last night, I rode to the club after work, did my strength training, and then rode home. And I rode into work this morning. 25.23 miles; 359.06 down, 106.29 to go. At 349 miles, I passed Sacajawea State Park, at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia Rivers. I've left the Tri-Cities (home!) behind, just passed through Burbank, WA, and I am currently pedalling through a vineyard.

I'm on a highway. There is a route along the banks of the Snake River, but it is a railroad grade. Although it's been converted to a rail-trail and is now Columbia Plateua State Park, the southern portion is not suitable for road bikes. I've done sections on foot and on a mountain bike, and there are places it's even kind of miserable with those modes of transportation. www.parks.wa.gov/490/Columbia-Platea

Last night's ride home and this morning's ride in to work: 19.56 miles. 314.42 miles down, 150.93 to go. I've left the Columbia River, and passed the last bridge to Oregon and the McNary dam. I'm a couple of miles into a long, steep hill: 19 miles of up up up, 1400 feet of elevation gain. It's not a mountain pass, but I'm a hill slug. If I was really climbing this hill, it might take me all day. (The road loses all that elevation in just nine miles. WHEEEEEEE!)

At this point, I'm close enough to home to have my sag wagon/knight in shining armor/husband come pick me up so that I can take a long, luxurious bath, sleep in my own bed, and say hi to the cats.

Good thing I took the long route home last night, because I took the short route into work today. The wind is from the SSW, and by staying on city streets I was able to take advantage of the shelter of buildings.

7.89 miles, 187.11 down, 278.44 to go. I'm passing Drano Lake. Seriously - that's the name. Along this route, there are a lot of sections where the highway & railroad track create lagoons. Each one of these lagoons seems to have its own name.

I rode in Thursday morning, but I didn't get to ride home. I "didn't get to" because a defense attorney served me with three motions (two to dismiss, one for a continuance), at 3:30 p.m. for a trial starting at 9 a.m. the next day. I believe this was a tactic to get me to agree to the continuance I kept saying "no" to. The tactic failed, because I wrote my response to his three motions and a motion for sanctions against the other attorney last night. Because I finished at about 7:30 p.m., I drove home. Otherwise, I would have arrived home at 8:30, and I would have gone to bed almost immediately. Where's the fun in that?

Anyway ... 7.89 miles, which puts me at 119.6 miles down and 345.95 to go. I'm in the Battle Ground area, approaching Vancouver, WA. Getting through Vancouver will be hairy.

I have a book titled "The Traveler's Guide to the Lewis & Clark Trail." It kind of set me to thinking about that ride. There's a supported ride across Washington, but it's further north. Put a few muddled thoughts together, throw in some oxygen-deprived musings, and viola! we have a new ride!

This is a great challenge! Our weather hasn't yet gotten to the point where I'm inclined to ride (or, I haven't gotten to the point where I'm inclined to ride in this weather), so I won't be joining yet. But soon, I hope...in the meantime, I'm thinking about rides.

Hillslug, I love the Lewis & Clark inspired ride. I loved the book Undaunted Courage, and really enjoyed the bicentennial exhibit at the Smithsonian...amazing to think about how many materials they collected, preserved, and successfully shipped back. Wow.

We succeed when we create conditions for success - and when we can't do that, we create conditions for succeeding within constraints.

Another 10.29 miles today. 29.77 miles down, 416.1 to go. Just passed the Appelo Archive Center, which houses historical documents relating to the Grays Harbor & Southwest Washington area.

In reality, this ride home was awful. The wind was bad. It rained briefly, and the wind was so bad it felt like hail hitting my face. The wind was so strong I went for miles without taking my left hand of the drop (the windward side of the bike). I questioned my sanity. There's a spot about 3 1/2 miles into my trip where I can get off the levee along the river, cut through some neighborhoods, and get home via surface streets. I thought about it, but I was wearing my Vacasoleil team cycling cap. Vacansoleil was the team Johnny Hoogerland was on when he was involved in a nasty crash during the Tour de France. (He was in a breakaway with two other riders. A media car struck one of the riders, which forced him into the other two, which caused them all to crash. Hoogerland flipped off the bike and into a barbed-wire fence. He finished the stage with gashes down the length of his leg (buttocks to calf), shorts nearly torn off, bleeding.) A few times, I shouted at myself, "Hooger up!" With that wind, I could shout all I wanted - no one could hear me.

Love God. Love your neighbor. Change the world. It really is that simple.

I'll play...I have so many routes to pick from. My dream ride is around the perimeter of the US..starting from my home in Tennessee. I'm not sure how I want to manage this in real life given my ongoing treatments for breast cancer. I'll work on the plans and keep posting.

Kay from Tennessee

This is a great challenge! I'm riding a meandering route through Ireland, 384 miles.

Anyone joining, feel free to put pictures up that show the highlights of your "journey."

I really like the format for challenges we've done in the past, so I'm going to start up a new one. Instead of just picking how many miles you intend to ride, pick a destination or a dream trip, like a ride. As you progress along your trip, feel free to tell us where you're at and what the scenery is like (if you know). Once you've done that, pick another if you want to continue "playing."

Some day, I'd like to ride the route Lewis & Clark took through Washington, my home state. But, given that I am a clever lass, I will ride it west to east to take advantage of the prevailing winds. I can't quite figure out the route in one section near Vancouver - it looks as if there is NO safe route for bicycles - so I'll have to wing it.

It's 465.35 miles. I rode home from work last night and back in this morning, so I've ridden 19.48 miles.

19.48 miles ridden, 445.87 left. I spent much of this ride in the Fort Columbia State Park. I've passed the Astoria-Megler bridge, where the Hubs once got a speeding ticket based upon the time stamp on his toll receipt (they could tell he was travelling in excess of 100 mph), and I'm getting close to the little town of Naselle.
