It's funny how our perceptions change over time. Back in April or May 10 miles seemed like a huge feat. Now I too think of it as a short ride!

1st goal 255# MET 2/20/12 (Update: Met this goal but now have gained the weight back so it is now a goal once again)
2nd goal 205#
3rd goal 155#

Too bad it's such a short ride, otherwise, my husband and I might have been interested in it.

I just found out about a local ride "Ride the Root" meaning the Root River in Racine in October. I'm concerned though because it seems there is going to be a walk going on if you don't ride that is on the same pathway as the bikes starting at the same time. That sure doesn't sound safe to me. Maybe I just read it wrong. Plus it is a short ride, only 15 miles, but in another section of the ad it says 10K. I wrote for more details. www.racinekids.org/bikeride.htm

He is definitely a weaker rider, and is not keen on biking, so I definitely want to borrow one to see if he likes it at all.

It's clearly an advantage of tandems that you stay together. I was amazed when we went to the tandem rally that pretty much the universal reason for getting a tandem was so that partners could talk to each other better while they rode and so that the weaker partner wasn't always trying to catch up with the stronger one....particularly on hills. I am crazy about our tandem because we both have great views and our heads are really close together.

I think it's key for any stoker that they trust the captain's ability to "drive". In my case, that's particularly critical because I'm out in front on our tandem with no ability to steer or brake! In the beginning, I called my seat the "thriller seat".

Fortunately, my husband has been really good about respecting me when I say I want to slow down on steep hills etc. Now we both call my seat the "princess seat!" I have to admit that I'd much rather be in front in the recumbent position than in back on a "wedgie", but we can swap if need be.

I really have to see if I can borrow a tandem from a friend so DH and I can try riding it and see if riding is a better thing for him with a tandem. He dislikes cycling because he always feels very alone, but if we are both attached to the same bike I'm hoping we can resolve that.

I have two organized rides coming up in two weeks. On Saturday, there is a ride with the Chicago Area Tandem club (CATS) in Barrington, IL...It will be our first one with that group. On Sunday, we are doing the Blood, Sweat and Tears Ride in Highland Park IL for Leukemia. Both rides should be interesting.

The ride we did last weekend (Harmon 100 in Wilmont, WI) was a very large ride, but didn't really seem that way until we got to the first rest stop. We had started relatively late (around 9 am) and didn't see a lot of riders until the rest stop because it was both the first and second stop for people doing both the 50 and 75 mile rides. We were doing the 50, but we saw a lot of people coming for the second time from finishing a loop that made up the 75 mile ride. From that point back to the start, there were quite a few riders with us.

Hubby and I are doing the Harmon 100 this weekend in Wilmont, IL. I think we will probably do the 50 mile ride assuming the weather is good.

I can bike the tandem solo pretty easily, but it looks strange when I do it!

Is anyone riding the "Ride On the Wild Side" Milwaukee Zoo ride on the 16th? It sounds like it will be fun. I'll be going with my son Brandon and grandsons Haydn and Liam. Here is the link: www.zoosociety.org/Events/RideWild/

This weekend we are going to the Midwest Tandem rally with our new tandem. It's a three-day long event just outside of Madison, Wisconsin. That's only a two-hour drive from our house. It should be interesting to see so many tandems in one place at one time.

I "captained" the tandem for the first time today. It went very well. I was actually surprised how easy it was. The only time I had a problem was when I had to hold the bike at a stop sign on a steep incline. My husband helped by putting his feet down instead of leaving them on the pedals. It was actually a lot of fun. I'm glad to know we can swap positions on the tandem.

Last night DD and I went to the Superhero Ride here in Cleveland. It was definitely not a race! About 125 people showed up dressed up in costumes. I went as Mighty Mouse. The ride was only about 12 miles, broken up by stops at three local bars. We had a great time, and managed to turn it into a 30-mile ride by riding to and from the event.

I'll either do the 38 or 56 mile ride depending on the weather and what time we get up to Wisconsin in the morning. It's about an hour's drive from where we live in northern Illinois.

Hi
I am also doing the Trek Breast Cancer ride Oct 8th I think that might be my last ride of the year..but I hope not.. last week it was a great day I did the Hub on Wheels in Boston it was so nice.. 32 miles 2 hours and 45 mins.. I wanted to do the 50 mile but hubby did not want to.. he was a mile behind me the whole time so I had to wait for him a couple of times.

well hope everyone can enjoy the rest of the riding season.. me I am going to take advantage of every good day we get.. because in Central New York it gets cold fast..

Anita ~ the Hub on Wheels Festival sounds like lots of fun!!! Hope you have a great time.

September 10th I'm participating in a MS fundraiser called the Margarita Ride. You have different routes you can choose based upon how far you want to ride. When you're done you get to join other riders for some Mexican food & a Margarita. It's a great time.

New to this forum - glad to be with like-minded people!

Next week my husband and I head out to Washington Bicycle Ride 350 miles in south-central Washington & up the Columbia Gorge. Lots of hills here & we are looking at it as training for our next big ride - an international race in Belgium. Mind you I have never been in a race before - qualified for this one in a Gran Fondo in New York - and am more than a little intimidated, practicing some self-defeating behavior right now. I'm getting over that soon though and heading back to peak condition.

The thrill is not just in the winning, but in the courage to join the race

I signed up for the Elk River Valley 100 on September 10th in Lynchburg, TN. they have the options to go 10, 31, 50, 62 and 100 miles. i signed for the 50, in celebration of my 51st birthday. a half century for the start of my 2nd half century.

This will be my first ever biking event and i signed up for it a few days after my Sports Med Doc advised me to stop running due to the bone spurs in my hip joints. he said try riding a bike or swimming.

I knew i had to stay active or risk gaining all of my weight back and i dont want to go back there!

24 Hours of Booty - It's a marathon created in Charlotte, NC where cyclists ride in a loop of about 3.5 miles for 24 hours to raise money for cancer research and fighter/survivor/family support. In the center is Bootyville, a tent city with food, bike repair help, medical tent and team tents. It has been so successful that it is now in Atlanta, GA and Columbia, MD.

I am riding in the Atlanta marathon because Charlotte was booked solid in only 8 hours after registration opened. This is my first event and I am not a rider and not in shape. But I do think I am in for a great experience. My marathon is Oct 1 & 2.

I have some recreational weekend rides scheduled--a 40 miler this weekend if the weather cooperates.

June 11 -- a sprint Tr (my first)
October 23 - Wild Goose Chase, Blackwater Nature Preserve, Maryland

I've been looking at the Indian Head, Maryland, century in September. Has anyone ridden this? I've ridden the Seagull Century twice and thought it would be nice to try a different century.

I raced a couple of events recently. I did a 30 mile road race outside of Houston and finished 10th of 18 riders. I was sitting in 5th place when we reached the final hill at 1000 meters. I couldn't believe women started sprinting that far out. I couldn't hang on and gave up quite a few positions, but I still finished with the lead pack and got a top 10. I was happy.

I started racing at the velodrome on Friday nights. I bought a track bike and I train on Monday nights and race on Friday nights. Its fun and fast. Usually 3 races, each about 10-15 laps in length. I am learning and hoping the track racing will help me get faster in my sprinting. Its been really fun so far. I haven't won (yet), but I am having a blast doing it.

JTAYLOR2X, thanks for the links!

I've been thinking about getting into some long rides :) I saw 1,500 cyclists at the Law Enforcement Memorial yesterday, who rode from may different areas just to come to the memorial/candle ceremony. Just the motivation I needed!

Their web site is: www.policeunitytour.com/ if you're interested

I haven't made a plan for rides yet -- but I found this website today to help me! Now I can set some goals... I suppose the first step is getting the bike out of storage....

search.active.com/search

This site has a GREAT search engine for finding any the types of activities you might enjoy. There are several bike races and events... and everything else!

And here's another one:

Enjoy!

So, two big events for me coming up in the next few weeks. Next weekend, April 16-17 I will be participating in the BP MS150 ride. A charity ride that supports people with MS and their families. Its a 160-170 mile two day ride from Houston to Austin with a camping sleepover at the halfway point. Over 10,000 riders participate. This will be my first one and I am very excited to have raised nearly $2000 for the charity. It should be a really fun event.

The second is going to be my next racing event. I am doing a Womens Category 4 Road Race just outside of Houston on May 7th. I hope all this training pays off.

I just signed up for the MS150 City to SHore ride from Philadelphia to Ocean City, NJ on Sept. 24-25th. It's 75 miles down to OC on Sat and 75 miles back to Philly on Sunday. I never did this ride before and my old "big" ride before was in 2009 the ACS City to SHore Ride and I did the 55 mile version. I'm excited and love to bike and last summer I did not bike as much b/c I was focussing on my first Half Marathon!

So I said I would post my 2011 cycling events today. Strange but my tandem partner (we've only been doing this for two days!) then called me later wanting to put together a schedule of events we'll be doing with 'Big Red'. So here are the events scheduled so far, some solo, some on the tandem:

2/27 Chilly Hilly 33 mi hilly ride
3/19 McClinchy Mile 45 or 52 miles
5/7 Skagit Spring Classic 62 or 100 probably on Big Red
6/11 Flying Wheels 100 miles on Big Red
6/18 Week-long Oregon Tour 25-35 miles/day solo plus working as sag half day, every day
7/9 Seattle to Portland Possibly 200 miles in one day, otherwise in 2 days on Big Red
8/6 Seattle to Vancouver 180 miles in 2 days on Big Red

Of course there'll be many rides in between training for these events, some which I'll be leading. Looking forward to a busy cycling season!!

This is a place to post your upcoming rides and races that you'll be participating in or training for.. tell us when, where, is it your first time or your 10th?.. if you've done it before what'd you love about it and does it challenge you?
