Hi CatLady! Thank you so much for your kindness and concern. And Yes! Baby is doing okay. He barely made it but he made it. emoticon You are a very busy cat mom!! If I could have more, I would but I rent and my limit is two.

Baby, when healthy, is very ornery and independent and he is back! emoticon
Thank you very much and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. Hope Baby is on the road to recovery. I saw in one post that someone suggested sugar water if Baby wasn't eating. My vet always suggested to me to use Pedialyte for sick kitties and dogs. I keep a bottle on my shelf for emergency use. I know how hard it is when one of your babies is sick. I have 8 cats and really get involved in their problems. If they are sick, I am sick. I just want them to be healthy and happy. They are so much a part of my life and are truly my family. Hope Baby is on the mend!!!

Hi Susie!

Driving distance, it is 4-6 hours away depending on traffic, the weather, etc. I will still be in Florida but I am moving from Fort Lauderdale to Pinellas county (west of Tampa).

I so wish the best to you in getting your own place. It is SO hard since the housing bust to get a loan for a home. Maybe we will be moving at the same time! I am moving in April and can't wait! I hope you enjoy the rest of your week.

Chelsea emoticon

P.S. I am thinking of changing the title of this topic since it is kind of depressing.....Baby is a bit slower today and I hope it is just, like us, and "off" day. He is eating on its own and that's great, especially for a very picky cat! emoticon emoticon

Thanks for the response. Yes, our first thought when looking for a place;house, apartment ...whatever...is of our furbabies! #1 of course, is do they allow pets? #2 is there a yard for the dog( sadly this was not attainable with our last move) and #3 are there enough windows for the cats? A house is both a dream and a goal. We have some work to do on our credit before we can qualify for a loan and most rental properties around here don't allow pets or want a HUGE pet deposit. We are working toward possibly getting a place in the Spring or Summer of next year.
Do keep me posted on your move. Are you moving far? You mentioned a new vet so I assumed it is too far to continue with the old one. I hope you find another great vet too. Baby is lucky to have a mommy like you! emoticon

Susie, when you do think you will be moving to a house? Is it a dream for which you want to set goals, or is it really close to happening? It is funny how, everywhere I move to since my first cat back in 1993, has been with my cats in mind--will they like the windows, is it quiet, does it have enough room to play, etc. emoticon I can see you are doing the same thing. emoticon
It wasn't until I moved to Florida that I first lived in an apartment that had screened porches! It has been great because the weather cooperates most of the year for them except during thunderstorm season; the porch is too wet then. But even then, Baby would always go out on the porch after a big storm. He considered the porch (and surroundings) his kingdom.

I can't wait to move and hope he doesn't get sick again, at least until we move. I want him to have his porch again. AND, after having a GREAT vet here (e.g., the doctors, the office staff), I am going to get myself a new vet. He deserves it. emoticon

Yes indeedy I do understand. I really am glad he's doing better. emoticon Sounds like your move willl be good for all of you. They will enjoy the porch so much. My babies love it when we leave the windows up. Luckily we have plenty so each one can get their own window sill. I do look forward to moving to a house(live in a 2 bdrm apartment right now) so my dog can have yard and the cats can have a screened in porch.

Hi Susie!

So you do understand, like all of us cat lovers. I live alone and I am single (no living children) and my cats are like kids to me too. I just love them very much and they are close to my heart. Thanks for your kind words. emoticon
In 4 months I am moving to an apartment that has an enclosed porch of which there are none here. Baby loved the last apartment with the porch. He has always being a sickly cat since I got him at the SPCA and I just know he will have lots of fun again. Now all my cats get are 2 windows.

Thanks again, ladies.

Oh my goodness, I just saw this topic! I'm so glad your cat is better. I have 4 cats myself and I consider them my "kids" since I don't have any children. I really understand how hard it is when one is very sick or even passes away.

I haven't heard him sneeze or cough today and hardly any yesterday so I think he is okay now. The new food he is eating is suppose to help with the original digestive problem and everything is okay there. He is climbing the high places again and yesterday, for the first time in 3 weeks, he was playing with Lucy.

So, thank you all for your wonderful support and kindness. It has all helped me make it through this hard time.

God bless you all!

Addie, what a beautiful story! That's incredible! People who don't like cats don't realize how special they are.

And thanks for your kind words too about Baby. He is improving slowly and I just need to encourage him to eat at times but not all the time. I am happy he is improving since I didn't feel ready to say goodbye. I just moved here and only know 2 people and I just didn't want to.

Thanks again and I hope you have a wonderful weekend! You too Pam. emoticon

My heart goes out to you ladies. Tears and tissues while I read this. I've been an animal lover my whole life. I've known my share of loses in my 32yrs. My thoughts and prayers are with you and you babies. I'm glad for the improvement.

My advice is this; You will know when you and you baby are ready to say goodbye. Goodbye is so very hard to say, but some times our greatest gestrue of love is being willing to let go and spare our babies any pain and suffering we can.

I still have dreams about soul friend kitties that I have had to let go home. If not for one of them, I wouldn't be here now. She slept on my chest when I had blood clot in my lung(before I knew I had them) and she would swat my nose during sleep to wake me up because I had stopped breathing. She's now my gardian angle in heaven. Cherish the memories, but don't be afraid to let go when its time.

I have hope that the vet will help him with his congestion. He got a cold after the UTI got better. Maybe she has seen this before and will know what to do for him. I feel hopeful since he is eating a little bit more and about 1-2 day, jumps up by his favorite window.

Thanks again and I will keep you posted.

Hi Chelsea,

I am glad that Baby is eating a little better, and that his condition has improved at least some. I hope he will feel better after his visit to the vet on Monday.

I understand how you feel. Whether it is our children or our pets who are sick, it really affects us as parents (we really DO feel like parents to our beloved pets). Let's just keep praying that Baby's condition will improve very soon. Try to take care of yourself, and know that we care about both you and Baby...oh, and Lucy, too.

Thanks so much for asking.

He is eating a little bit more but I have to encourage him or he won't. He lays around all day and night but once in a while, if something interests him, he will participate. So, he is improving some but not great. I will take him to the vet on Monday for a check up and I hope the news are good.

My problem has been not eating much when upset. If he gets up and participates in doing something, I feel like eating. If he lays around and won't eat unless I bring the bowl to him, I don't feel like eating. My emotions are up in the air. Today I am going to a birding class locally with a friend and I hope that will cheer me up.

Again, I want to thank all of you for your support that means so much since I live alone and moved to an area where I only have 2 friends (so far).

Dear ORDINARY1:

I had no idea and I am sorry. What country to you live at? That would be SO difficult. It is hard enough in my own country, 5 hours away from where I used to live. How long have you lived there?

Do you have photos of your new town, home? Are you allowed pets there? I hope so.

Well, you have me here. Of course, I am online but you can write anytime.

Thanks Pam!

Her eye looks a little sore and I hope it is just some kind of itch or allergy. It seems to have cleared out some today. Of course, she is her usual self--"flying" everywhere and wanting to play which is great.

Thanks again!

Chelsea, I'm so glad to hear that Baby is doing better. I hope he will continue to improve!

No, the cat in my current photo is Sam. So far, he's been healthy as a horse. When he was a kitten, we had to delay his neutering due to some elevated liver numbers, but since then, he's been fine. :)

Hope you keep seeing improvement! The urinating on his own is awesome! A very good sign. Hopefully, he will get some fluids into him and stay hydrated. Keep us posted. And so glad to offer a little comfort. I know lonely. We live in another country (husband is military)and I have NO ONE here. So I can understand and empathise with you. :) Hope you have a good day today with nothing but smiles and sunshine!

Oh! That is such good news about Baby. Let's pray that he continues to improve. I hope Lucy's condition with her eye is nothing serious. I will keep her in my prayers also.

HI PAM!

I have placed clean bowls of water around the apartment hoping he will drink more. I hope he does. He is urinating normally again and I am grateful. Thanks for the advice!

HI SANDRA!

I will keep that in mind if he starts not eating or drinking again. My vet didn't say that to me but it is a GREAT idea. Thanks!

Dear PIMPINELLAN50!

I am very sorry about your kitty. It's very hard for us cat lovers and pet lovers. Do you have a pet now? Thanks for your compassionate thoughts. I so much appreciate it!

HI AMME!

I had forgotten to eat I was so upset! And believe me, I am here at SparkPeople because I don't forget to eat. I ate earlier when someone (was it you too?) reminded me to eat too. He loves tuna liquid!! I am going to buy some tuna tomorrow to encourage him to drink. Thanks again for keeping tabs on Baby and me. Means so much!

TO ALL! Thank you SO much for your support the last 24 hours. I was just so freaked out since I don't really know anyone here since I moved not too long ago. Thank you very much!

Chelsea,

I'm happy to hear Baby is eating. I don't know if his diet allows this but tuna water/juice from the can worked for my cat sometimes. Keep us posted on how you and Baby and Lucy are doing. My prayers are with you. I know how stressful it can be. Don't forget to take care of yourself as well. Take care. Anne

Hi Chelsea,
I am so sorry for what you and Baby are going through.Glad that he has started to eat some food again.I went through something similar with my 13 year old cat Whiskers 3 years ago.It breaks our hearts to see our pets being ill,and also the possibility of having to make the choice of putting them to sleep forever..I am thinking about you,and hoping that Baby will get better soon.

Dear Jen M.:

Is the white kitty your little trooper? I used to have a white cat named Coco. He was the first cat I ever owned. He was all white, really beautiful (back in 1993).

Baby started eating a little bit today and I hope that means he is getting better. He does have a pancreatic type problem which requires very specialized food so this UTI is a bummer. Thanks for your words of encouragement and your beautiful story about your cat's healing. They are really amazing animals.

Have a wonderful week!

I'm so sorry you are facing this, especially with him being so young. It sounds like he's had a rough road.

My Toranaga almost died three times in 2007 due to crystals. He went through catheterization, fluids, antibiotics, hospital stays...It was awful, but he just kept on trucking and finally recovered. He only gets canned food now. If it had happened again, I would have had them give what's called PU. It's a surgery, but I don't remember what it stands for. They basically make a male cat a eunuch, so that he has a wider urethra. I'm glad we did not have to do that, but I would if he had needed it.

Fortunately, he recovered, and he's fine now, 5 years later. He's a trooper.

I hope Baby will pull through or will let you know what he needs. it's such a tough thing to go through, and I will keep you in my thoughts. :(

Thank you, ANOTHERMOMOF2, for your kind words.

Dear Amme:

As soon as I read you were crying while you typed for me, I started crying and I send you a BIG hug and thank you. emoticon

Cats are known for hiding their pain and like you, I need to let him go so he doesn't suffer. I am sure he can last longer but miserably. As you know, it is hard but part of living is making hard decisions sometimes, and being comforted in knowing the right thing was done. Also, the comfort comes from family and wonderful friends.

Again, thanks for your kind words and may you enjoy your furry friends now. I still have Lucy and she knows something is amiss. I find courage with the support from people like you. Thank you very, very much.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I currently have 3 fur babies but 5 years ago I had to make the decision to put my first baby Baxter to sleep. I had adopted him when he was around 1. At 3 he began with stones, crystals and UTIs. After years of surgery, antibiotics, steroids and special food his kidneys started failing. He dropped weight rapidly. I kept wondering when I would know when it was time. The vet kept telling me he would prob die on his own. Well my little guy just wouldnt give up. I knew it was time the day he didn't meet me at the door. He had done this every day since I had him. Goodness I'm crying as I type this after 5 years! I spent the evening with him and the next morning I brought him in. I think you can tell by how they look at you. I just knew at that moment it was the right time. I'm sure you will know it too. My thoughts are with you and your Baby.

Wow Sandra Lee! I don't know what I would do if that happened to me. Sorry about that. I think it is as hard as having to take them to the vet to put them to sleep. A loss is a loss.

Dear Susan:

I am very sorry about your dear dog recently. It is so painful and people who are not pet lovers have given me a hard time saying things like "it is really not like a child." I agree that our pets are not like a human child but to us, they are everything and are part of the family. God bless you with your recent loss and I want to thank you so much for your support and kindness. Good luck with all your goals here in Spark People.

Hi Sandra Lee!

Yes, he has. His kidneys are okay but a little bit stressed from the UTI he is fighting now.

When I adopted him at 10 months old, he was very healthy and then when he was 1 1/2 years old, he almost died and the vets weren't sure what was wrong. He almost died twice prior to the age of 2 so I was told to buy limited ingredient food and give him a probiotic. Even though he never fully gained all the weight back, he has done very well for almost 4 years now (e.g., playing, chasing bugs and lizards, climbing the furniture) and all his blood work has been normal. Then, 2 weeks ago, he got the UTI. Since his body is already compromised, this UTI has been extra hard on him. If he continues to eat and urinate, he has a chance of making it. He had a full blood work out Friday.

He sees the vet again in 1 week and if he is not well from this problem (e.g., UTI, vomiting most of what he eats, restless, crying), I will make a decision that's best for him, not me. I will just need support to grieve if he needs to go. My other cat Lucy knows there is something wrong and in a way, she is grieving too.

Thanks again for your support.

I have just been through this myself, I truly understand how painful it is. Even though they are nearing the end, they still try to please us. I am sending positive thoughts to your cat and you that you both may find comfort and peace in the times you shared.

Thank you Pam! I know what you mean about the eyes. The other day I told him that if he didn't start eating a little bit more, he wouldn't make it. And he actually walked to his food bowl and ate a little bit. I couldn't believe it! It was so odd and special. But prior to walking to his bowl, he looked up at me, looked me in the eye, and then went to eat.

The mysteries of life are so special.

I wish you the best with your kitty and I hope to be here for you in your time of need. God bless.

Hi Chelsea. I'm so sorry you are going through this. I have been through it more than a few times and know the pain that comes with it. It is the hardest part of loving these fur babies. But they love us unconditionally and are totally worth it (imho).

I won't tell you what to do, but if you feel you have to make this choice, sometimes the vet's office will arrange for a home visit to make it easier on the animal. This may be something you want to look into.

I'll keep you and Baby in my thoughts and prayers. Take care and stay strong. Best wishes,

Andrea

Hi Chelsea,

I am so very sorry to hear about Baby's illness. I have six cats, and fortunately I have not yet had to make the decision that you may be facing. My oldest cat is almost 17 years old, and I know that one day I may be faced with that decision.

I once heard a talk on the subject of making that decision, and the speaker's advice made good sense to me. His advice was to 'look into your pet's eyes, and his eyes will tell you if he is ready to go.' The speaker referred to it as 'Crossing Over the Rainbow Bridge.' Look into Baby's eyes and see if you can figure out what he is telling you.

I know this is a very sad time for you, and I feel very sad for you and Baby; Lucy too, because she will miss him. I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers in hopes that Baby's condition will improve, and that you will make the decision that Baby would want you to make.

Hello everyone.

My name is Chelsea and I live in south Florida (Broward county). I have two cats, Lucy and Baby, both 5 years old. Baby, the male cat, has been to the vet twice in the last 2 weeks for about $500 and I don't think he is healing.

Today he threw up almost everything he ate and has lost weight in the last 2 weeks. He meows in a way that just sounds terrible. I will try to bribe this lady I know in my area (just moved here 5 months ago) to take me to the vet later today (it is 12:30 am now). I may have to put him to sleep because I just can't put him through another painful and miserable vet visit.

I adopted him with pancreas and digestive problems but have been able to keep him happy and somewhat healthy all this time until 2 weeks ago.

I just needed to share with others who understand the pain of a sick kitty and having to make the decision soon to put him to sleep.

Thanks for listening. emoticon
