Yes, absolutely...gotta love'em!

My geriatric boy, Cirrus, was just treated for a necrotizing spider bite on his chin. He is an indoor-only cat, so I am a little concerned that he may have found a brown recluse or something. Fortunately, the bug sprayer came this past week, while Cirrus' chin was healing up...the Vet cleaned it out and gave him a long-acting antibiotic injection, as well, to keep me from having to touch his chin to give him pills or liquids.

The pet-parenting never ends...but my babies are worth every bit of it!

I'm so glad he's better! It's tough on the kitties when they are sick, but it's also hard on the kitty-parents! Not nearly so serious as your situation, but I've been worried all day because my Maggie May went to the vet this morning for showing symptoms of a UTI. She got a long-lasting antibiotic shot (so much better than having to give a cat liquid antibiotics twice a day for a couple of weeks!) and will go back in a couple of weeks for a booster. She's now at home probably either sleeping or being tormented by her sister, Alice (who will hiss and spit at her for a couple of days, because MM now smells 'funny').

I had to laugh, though--the vet had taken an x-ray of her abdomen to make sure that she didn't have any bladder stones (since she's had a UTI once before). It was clear, but he showed me her intestines and pointed out that she had a lot of gas present. I could have told him that she has a gas problem sometimes--she likes to curl up right under my chin and take naps, and sometimes...whew!

But we love 'em through thick and thin, don't we? (and through gas attacks)

Victory for kitten food (and appetite stimulants)!!! emoticon Saint has gained a ½ pound in the last week, eating kitten food three times a day and the regular k/d kibble the rest of the time.

The appetite stimulants make him restless during the night...to the point that he stays awake and keeps me up with yowling. I confirmed with the Vet that the antihistimine properties not only makes the cats more hungry, but it makes them more irritable, so there is no more PM dosing.

Terribly sorry it has taken so long to get back to everyone on my boy...he's been a handful of late, and yes, he is still alive, thankfully (though I've completely lost my sanity...and the contents of my bank account). He maintained his stay at the Vet's office through part of December, and finally came home about a month ago.

His biopsy was negative for anything cancerous, and came back with only signs of hepatic lipidosis, from which I knew he could recover...timing was everything and making sure he continued to get the care he needed was the thing of greatest importance.

His first signs of recovery were when I took some baked chicken breast in to the Vet's on 1 Dec; he nibbled on three small pieces (smaller than a pinkie fingernail) of chicken and kept it down. I left what was in the baggie with him in hopes that he would eat more the rest of the night, which he didn't. The next couple of days I was feeding it to him by hand...he seemed to take it from me better than the Vet's staff, though he seemed to like them well-enough. I also sang to him, "I'll be home for Christmas" as it had become his theme-song. :-) All the while they were still force feeding him with a syringe and continued the subcutaneous fluids.

After those couple of days with the chicken, I took in some turkey breast meat that was leftover from Thanksgiving. He started eating a little more voraciously, but still wasn't touching the kibble or wet food the Vet put out for him. It seemed as though every time I was there, they had this pile of wet food and it just made him drool to sniff it...showing it didn't smell very good to him. He really decided the turkey was the way to go though, so the next day I brought in some kibble, the Hill's Prescription k/d he eats at home (because of my other, older cat, Cirrus, who is in early stage renal failure). He finished the turkey I put down for him and so I recommended the Vet's office give him only the turkey in tablespoonfuls and a 1/4 cup of kibble. That was the magic solution...they reported he started eating his kibble that night!!!! He ate all of his turkey and all of his kibble and even a little of the nasty wet food.

The Vet's office kept him for a couple more days to ensure he was stable, and then he was sent home with staples still in his belly from the exploratory surgery. Apparently, kitty tummies don't heal so well post-op when they are really sick, so his staples stayed in for a full week past when they were supposed to come out. At first, he was very good about not pulling at them. The Vet said he seemed to leave well enough alone. One morning, about 3am, I heard this loud "pock" sound...turns out he was pulling out the lowest staples. So I had to take him back, get an e-collar (a.k.a. Cone of Shame) for him, and we kept waiting! He was so miserable in the e-collar that he just laid still when it was on. I tried to take it off regularly and keep an eye on him to preventatively intercept staple-pulling behaviour so he could eat and use the litter box on his own (the collar made it so he couldn't properly place his feed in the box, making a mess otherwise).

After the staples came out, he was a much happier kitty. He has assumed the role of tormentor of the old boy, Cirrus, and has even been a little snarky with the girls lately, as well. He has had two appointments, from which blood samples were taken to confirm his liver is stable. His last visit, this past weekend though, we learned he is still not gaining weight, and in fact, he is losing more! He's down to a very lean 8.5lbs...and for the size of cat he is, that's way too little. The Vet is concerned and we started him on appetite stimulants. The full senior screen checked everything, including cardiac enzymes, and all came back normal again, so kitten food was recommended, and started on Monday night! Have you guys ever tried to feed only one cat one kind of especially tasty food, when all the others are relegated to a prescription diet??? It is no mean feat!

He goes back this Saturday to check his weight and for a gross exam again.

I want to thank you all for being so wonderful with your positive energy, thoughts and prayers. I truly would have gone insane had I not had the support of you and my family! If there are any further developments, I'll keep you informed.

that's so puzzling, but I'm glad to hear that the surgery didn't reveal anything cancerous. I will be praying and hoping that the vets will figure out what is going on and that it isn't anything that will be life-threatening.

Well, I visited on Monday and discussed the diagnostic options with my Vet and we agreed on the exploratory surgery with liver biopsy. Tuesday, I had an appointment for Luna's annual check-up and follow-up blood work for Cirrus, so I was hoping to get in to see Saint before he went in for surgery. When I checked in, they told me he had just gone in!!!

Imagine my surprise when the surgical tech came out and informed me that the doc would like me to come see what we were dealing with...knowing I work inthe medical field and am knowledgeable about the physiology and have studied up on the potential disease states. Overall, gross examination showed problems only with the liver, with spleen, gall bladder, kidneys and pancreas appearing completely normal! The doc took a 5 mm biopsy, from which we are still awaiting the results...most likely they'll be in Friday morning. I went to see my boy post-op today, and he was quite snuggly and seemed in better spirits, but still isn't eating on his own and presented with nausea, as evidenced by excessive drooling.

So now I wait...hoping for only a biopsy diagnosis of hepatic lipidosis, as anything else is a terminal illness, from which there's no recovery.

Thank you, everyone! I wasn't able to visit him today, as the office is closed to customers, but I will be visiting him tomorrow and will keep you updated as I learn more!

It is very tough to be without him...even though I haven four others to keep me company (and they are all right here on the couch with me now!), none can replace him! What's really crazy is the Vets to whom I take him were equally surprised to see him in with problems, as my old boy (Cirrus) or my FIP girl (Luna) were the more likely kitties to require such urgent medical care.

Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers! They are giving me peace of mind!

I spoke with the Vet this morning and am asking friends and family to pray and/or send positive thoughts for Saint. I visited the boy who was diagnosed with cholangiohepatits last week, to try to cheer him up and bring him some food from home. I'd really like to avoid a biopsy procedure, but surgery and a more definitive diagnosis may require it, to optimize his treatment.

Saint is "stable" but still not eating, so they are having to tube feed him (which has allowed him to gain a little weight, he had previously lost 5 of his 15 lbs since July, this year), administer antibiotics via injection (to decrease the infection in his liver), and provide fluids subcutaneously. He purred for me the entire time I was there (2 hours), and nuzzled my purse, probably recognizing the smells of home. I took in some of his food to see if he would eat it from me, but no luck...and took his fave toy, but he showed very little interest in that as well. They will run some additional liver NZ tests on Monday, but if he doesn't start eating by then, they will probably complete the biopsy of his liver on Tuesday, to rule out cancer...which is looking like another possibility. The biopsy will be much more definitive though, in that regard, to prognosis.
