Just got back from the 5K - hope everyone did well! The 5K weather was about perfect, just a nice cooling mist, but it was raining much harder when I got there, so I hope the half runners didn't get too soaked =(

I ran about 34:50 gun time, about 5 minutes faster than I was hoping for - can't wait to find out my official chip time =) I didn't set my watch so I have no idea exactly LOL!

I got my packet later this afternoon. Then I walked the course. I am glad I did. I feel less nervous now.

My daughter IS DETERMINED to come with me. She will be riding down with me to cut out a car. There seems to be quite a lot of parking, but I know how quickly it will fill up. At least I will have someone with me that can go park the car if I start worrying about time running short!

I'll be heading out for the packet a little later this afternoon. If it's REAL bad I may just park @ Catholic Charities...lol!

I'll be picking up my race packet this afternoon, probably early, like between 1-2. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about parking. I may have someone drop me off or just park in the ramp and use the walk as a warm-up.

It's going to be a ZOO down here on Sunday...this run has just EXPLODED with registrants! Thousands of folks! This is why I was hoping to ride my bike to the event...not to have to worry about parking! Scratch that if it's raining...!

I think so. It is 225 Water St. I just wrote down the address so I could look at it on a map.

The Expo and pre-registration is from 1-5:30.

I may go scope out the parking situation afterwards and possibly even walk the first part of the route as that is one part I am not able to remember.

Is anyone planning on going to the Expo and picking up their race packet on Sat? I was thinking that I might.

Since I have never done anything like this, I think I would feel better and get a better feel for things if I do. Maybe it will make me less NERVOUS!

Sounds great! Maybe we can meet in the stands above the 1st base dugout before the awards ceremony, which starts at 11. Since the course closes at 10:45, maybe we can plan to gather between 10:30-10:45 or so.

Well a formal get-together doesn't seem to be gaining much traction...but perhaps a loose notion of catching up at a certain spot might work...? I know we're all going to be busy with our families and other "stuff," but would love to have a round of high fives & all...! :-)

I'm not sure if I'll be driving or where I'll be parking yet, but I plan on arriving between 6:45-7 for the HM. Most of you will not need to be there that early. I'll also have company in town, so I won't be able to stay too much past the awards ceremony, but I would like to meet up with everyone and say hi.

I'm pretty sure all of the day of stuff is at the stadium. I'm not sure where within that it will be located, I know the finish line is on the field. I'm guessing that a lot of stuff will be located around the concourse. Maybe we could pick a spot somewhere in/near the stands.

Where is the "hub" of the run going to be. I know there's a lot of stuff happening at the RiverWalk convention center. Is it at the ball park? Where might be a good place to hook up...? Ballpark parking lot?

I think it would be cool to meet up after the races, maybe during awards. I'm hoping to be finishing as the 5K is starting, but I have family doing the 5K as well, so I'll be there to cheer everyone on!

Now I am feeling rather foolish! I had completely missed the Hickories thread.

So... forget that idea. the Hickories picnic is already so well planned.

I am sure that we will be hungry. How about a picnic?
A lot of us will have family there and we could include them easily that way.

Sounds great! I might join in the fun! When I was a kid we lived a couple blocks from Lake Michigan and I LIVED in the lake! My favorite thing to do was to swim out as far as I could, WELL beyond the swimming buoys...drove the lifeguards CRAZY...lol! When I got tired I'd just float around on my back for a while. I'd get out of the lake down from where the lifeguards were so I wouldn't have to put up with their finger-wagging. :-)

Later a buddy of mine got a SunFish sailboat and we'd take our lunch with us and go way out, drop anchor and spend the day out on the lake.

I've never gotten back into swimming ever since those junior high years living near the lake. It'd be pretty cool to reclaim that. Water was definitely my element once upon a time!

hey Don - thx for posting that link

as for the OWS at Dorchester..when you pull in, instead of turning left to go the the swimming beach area, your turn right and go up to that very last parking area and shelter. They set up bouys each Monday to swim around down over the bank there from that shelter. Approx 500 yds apart, set up in a triangle. And here is the VERY COOL thing about it - they set up 2 bouys about 200 yds apart parallel to shore and the 3rd is about 150 yds out. By setting the 2 up parallel to shore, those that are nervous, unsure, new to OWS, can swim between those 2 and always be right next to shore!! This was me (and a few others) last year for the first 2 times then I finally got brave and headed "out". About half way out I freaked out, got nervous, panic, etc but then I took a few breaths knew in my head I could do it so I had to stop freaking myself out and get going. After that I did ok.

They have lifeguards paddling around in a canoe, some people swim in regular bathing suits, some in wetsuits. I got a cheapy one for $99 and it it perfect what my needs. Not only does the wetsuit help to keep you warmer but they add bouyancy so even if you stopped all movement and just laid there - you will float. This too is a big mental help factor when heading out to the middle of a lake for no good reason other than to do it emoticon
So when you get nervous, flip over on your back, take a couple deep, calming breaths, remember the fact that you wanted to do this and it is supposed to be FUN....then flip back over and start going again.

Only tri club members and the whitney point swim club are there so it is a manageable size group. I think it was $30 for the whole summer and this went to pay for the services of the lifegaurds. Small price for the practice and experience of OWS

Thx KB for the info about the meeting and swimming resources!

I posted the beginner's meeting info @ SparkBinghamton:

Curious about the Open Water Swim @ Dorchester: do they open a greater area than they usually have roped off for folks to swim...? That seems so constricted...

I didn't actually run the course, just the 13.1 miles in 3 and 4 mile loops around my house. I run early and alone, so I like to stay as close as I can.

Gwen-my running schedule right now is:
M or Tues: 5K recevery/tempo run
Wed or Thurs: 2-3 miles of jog/sprint intervals (usually sprint 2 blocks, jog 2-3 blocks)
Sat or Sun: long run. My longest was 13.1 miles this past Saturday. This weekend will be shorter (maybe 10K) and hopefully another 12 or 13 next weekend.

I'd really like to be able to do 15-18 miles by the time May comes around, but it will depend on how often I can be outside.

emoticon that is great that you already registered, I am not quite that brave. I am sure that I want to do it but I always sign up as late as possible in case I can't do it for some reason - I don't want to lose the reg. fee.

So..you ran the course - how was it?

Ladygwen - sorry for the late answer - I just started swimming this year as well as biking. I am going to try and get 3 workouts of each (swim, bike, run) each week and build up as the time goes. There are some free programs on the beginnertriathlete.com website that you might want to take a look at (click on programs). 16 week and 20 week plans. balanced or a specific focus on anyone of the events. I am loosely following the 3x balanced plan.

I would just get in the pool and give it a few weeks and see how you feel, what you remember and what comes back, then go from there. Again a plug but hey, you can't beat the price of free. the BCTC has group swims every M & W at Chenango Forks School and I know there has been talk of redoing the swim clinics they did last year. They are great - they video you and it helps a lot to SEE what you are doing right or wrong and it is easier to make the changes needed. All free by joining the tri club. Get in the pool and get a few swims in then in Jan join the club and go swim with the club whenever for some free advice and coaching. Plus starting on Memorial day (thru labor day) there are Mon night OWS (open water swims) at Dorchester park which is a big help since OWS is a lot different than in the pool.

They are having a beginner info meeting on the 11th at Court Jester - Robinson St, I think. Go check it out. It is geared towards first timers and beginners and I think early spring they are going to start a program for first timers to follow to be ready for the BC Tri in July at Dorchester Park.

BTW this is open to all so anyone who is even thinking that "maybe someday" they would want to try a tri - go check it out.

I am so excited for the HM! I registered for it last week and I actually ran the distance this past Saturday. My only concerns now are staying healthy and maintaining my level of preparedness until May. I think anyone that is interested should go for it. At least the 5K. If you've been training to run some already, try for the half and plan on doing intervals.

I really think it will be a great experience and a great thing for the local running community.

That's what I've been doing...instead of drooling over catalogs and buying more STUFF (like who needs MORE?!? I recently discovered "Buy Nothing Day: November 26th...Buy Nothing: Value EVERYTHING!") for the holidays I'm having a blast with Google Maps bicycle feature and scoping out ALL SORTS of possible cycling tours! Now THAT'S something to get excited over! :-)

Don - I'll post the date of the Broome County Tri when I know it, probably July 16th-ish. It is a great one to go watch b/c it is small enough to see everything up close and personal and also very close being right at Dorchester. Ride your bike up - enjoy the race for an hour or so and then ride home.

We went watch the Cayuga Lake Tri this past Aug. that was really nice - nice park. I want to do that one this summer too.

summer plans, summer plans. Maybe if I keep busy with my 2011 plans I will "forget" that it is cold and winter now???? emoticon

**warning....plug ahead**

broomecountytriathlonclub.com/

scroll down a bit, look under the calendar on the far right hand side emoticon

I will be doing my first, real, full tri this summer - probably Broome County in July. Focusing on swimming this winter. I couldn't even swim a full length of a pool when I started.

A great one to "tri" if they do it again is the indoor one at BU - the swim is in the pool. Bike and run are outside.

I saw that and not only for this event, have been invited to another event in Pittsburgh in March which is similarly run.

Not sure what it's gonna take to just PUSH myself into making this commitment...! Have been thinking this might be just the thing to keep me moving through these long, dark months ahead...

You could do a run/walk 5K...run 4 minutes, walk 1 or however you want to break it up and you have 24/25 weeks to get ready......

Been toying with the notion of a 5K, but having difficulty making a commitment to this. Just haven't caught the running bug like I have cycling...but am envious of those who HAVE, which makes me think about it...
