There will be a 5K in Bainbridge on Memorial Day weekend. It's the Dan Elwood Memorial Annual Walk/Run for Hospice. That's the one I'm going to try. It would be fun if it could be a BAL spark thing. I"ll get more info and post it.

YES! Summer is going going GONE and we really must get another outdoor gathering in while we can!

So are we looking at Fri. / Sat. / Sun. Sept. 10th, 11th, 12th?

What works for everyone? We can have a walk / jog / run, possibly bring a dish to pass...? Let's start getting some ideas flowing here and nail a plan!

Don't give up.

10th works for me, the hubby is in a golf tournament that I have to drop him off at, but I don't have pick up duties so I'm free after that.

Okay folks...heading home from MI tomorrow morning, so I want to hit the ground running:

Let's pick a Saturday for Kayaking & Pot-Luck / Meet 'n Greet @ Dorchester Park in Whitney Point!

Either Sat. July 10th OR 17th...?

Post your preference and encourage others to post theirs!

Let's get together and SPARK!

Don

ps...those interested in planning a 5K for August...what day / location is looking good for you? Let's get the word out for THAT as well! :-)

I've never been Kayaking either but I live for the bucket list and this would fit on mine. However, since they have canoes and if you love them. maybe you would prefer that and it would be more fun then stress. I'm sorry about your brother, I can understand the anxiety you may have.

July 24th is not good for me because of a graduation party, but don't plan around me either.

The kayaks @ Dorchester are completely open. You don't slide down into anything, you're basically just sitting on top of a piece of plastic that's molded for a place to sit and a place for your feet to rest. No claustrophobia whatsoever!

They looked oh-so-tempting this past weekend when I rode my bike through the park!

How about we plan a kayaking, pot-luck gathering @ Dorchester in July? Just about any Saturday works for me...most Sundays too. Might be good to plan on a Sat. and shift to Sunday as a rain date...?

That will give us time to plan for a 5K. Actually, there is a lovely new path @ Dorchester...folks could do a 5K there! Or bring bikes, etc.

Also folks, don't forget about the Binghamton Historic Bridge Pedal Sunday July 11th! A 10 mile guided bicycle tour with little vignettes to fill in your knowledge of Binghamton history...haven't done it before myself, but have heard others speak highly of it. Some of our group members did this a few years ago and highly enjoyed it!

There will be much support and bike lanes formed...a safe way to enjoy pedaling about the city!

You are thinking of the kayaks where you are tented into them These kayak are like a canoe but only two seats. Much easier. I took my blind 87 year old father kayaking down the river for father's day and we didn't tip once.

i guess it makes me nervous that you're in the kayak,, and if you flip .. how the heck do you get back when you're underwater??? at least without panicking... my brother drowned when i was 14... and it's left a lasting impression on me.... I love canoeing... always WANTED to try kayaking... but i think i'd need some lessons to be comfortable.

There are canoes as well if that matters...if you've never tried it, I can't recommend kayaking enough...! It's such a blast! And you can work it as little or as hard as you want.

The weekends of July 17th and 24th don't work for me but don't plan around me. If there's going to be 2 dates, then I should be able to make one.
I absolutely love kayaking and haven't been since I was pregnant with my daughter. That was actually my first time paddling my own kayak too.
It can definitely be an easy enough activity for pretty much anyone.

Okay: should we think about setting up one event in July and another in August? 5K being one and kayaking the other...? Wrap a pot-luck, meet 'n greet into both?

How does this sound? Let's rule out the 4th and I'll be away the SpiedieFest weekend, besides which wouldn't want to compete with that anyhow (August 6-7th).

Now we need to hone in on which weekends to SPARK!

What works best for folks? What weekends DON'T work?

Here is an example of a SparkRally NJJAZZ posted about in her area:

Tomorrow the official NJ team is having a spark rally get -together in a local park. We have lined up the rally for when there is festival in the park so there will be lots to do and see. We are also doing a 4 mile walk ( weather permitting) and having a healthy BBQ with many of the recipes here on SP. everyone is bringing something and the park has grills to use for cooking.

Its great to have friends here online - but its also lots of fun to meet and greet other sparkers when you can.
A few months ago we did a 4 mile walk at the beach on the boardwalk and got a great turn out. Tomorrow we are expecting over 25 people.

Something to think about for your area or if you have geographic teams. Its a great motivator...........and keeps a team active and healthy. In this case we have two teams overlapping and I am a leader of the +50 with 10-24 pounds to lose so those of us in NJ - have also joined the official NJ team so we can get together.

---------

Once we decide what we're going to do, I will post it with OUR NY SparkTeam and fellow SparkTeams in Finger Lakes as well. The more the merrier!

I love the 5K idea and wanted to add that it wouldn't have to be a run but could be a walk just as easily for those who would need to walk.

I'd be up for a 5K...it would be my very first! :-)

We may need to start small, just a friendly run amongst us BAL folks...? I wouldn't begin to know how to widen it to other areas far away...!

Raising some money to put toward a great cause would be very cool too! I could go for any of those you named, Gwen.

We could pair it with a pot luck meet 'n greet afterward.

What do folks think...?

LET"S START THE FIRST EVER SPARK PEOPLE 5K walk/run!!!!! I copied this from my blog that i threw out my thoughts on this the other day.. Don ask that i post it here... For any other info on it... check out my blog entitled; Why doesn't spark people have a 5k? so here it is:

LADYGWEN25
6/23/2010 8:28AM

ANd i was thinking on it some more last night.. IF we picked some major cities across the U.S. Ex: Portland, Dallas, Cedar Rapids, Chicago, Charlotte, Binghamton(of course)...Something where there are enough access to all across the U.S where people CAN get to... THAT would be awesome...

Comfy.. i was thinking of something easy..Like a 5K walk/run.... $5 or $10 entry fee.. possibility of teams... Donations to go to stomp out hunger and obesity.

Ideas:

1.) purchasing healthy foods for our local food banks...because some of the stuff i've seen there is just cheap, boxed, not so healthy food..

2.) some way to benefit out local schools meal plans.

3.)creations of orchards or farms in our area where people of lower income can come and pick fresh fruits or vegetables and a fixed low price... My parents used to do something like this growing up.. We always planted a 1/2 acre garden to grow and give away for free to people in need.. they called it our poverty patch... Just because you're poor.. doesn't mean you can't eat healthy. this could be tended to by volunteers in our community. :)

I'm open and welcome to other ideas as well!

**** Side note... For the 5K Race... if we all wore spark t-shirts.. I thought it would be cool if we put on the back the number of pounds we've lost by being on spark people!

An idea is to pair an active event with an opportunity to chat with each other. There are some members who are more focused on healthy eating but either prefer to not engage in various activities or are limited physically.

I want EVERYONE to feel welcome to our gatherings so it would be helpful to have a meet 'n greet slot of time and an active slot of time for walking / jogging / biking / kayaking / whatever...

Love both ideas! The downtown riverwalk is a favorite lunchtime jaunt for me and Otsiningo...sheesh I'm on that ALL the time biking back and forth to work...nice break from the Front St. traffic.

And Ithaca sure IS GORGES! Love all the water there falls, lake and otherwise!

Another member SparkMailed me a request for kayaking. They rent kayaks at Dorchester in Whitney Point.

I also enjoy pot-luck meals where we can bring and share foods.

I can be very, very flexible and able to enjoy just about any activity that can bring us together to share some fun!

Keep the ideas coming!

Would folks want to pick something to do as quickly as this upcoming weekend...?

Not that I can do this just yet (I fell off my bike riding home from work, dislocated and broke my shoulder, so I'm not allowed to ride through August, in any case), but the ride from the North parking lot at Otsiningo Park downtown using the park and the Greenway along the river (you only have to use Chenango Street for a couple of blocks)is really nice and takes about 30 minutes. Just a couple of blocks from the end of the greenway (at Confluence Park) is Java Joes, which is open on Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. How about a bike ride and then a light breakfast there? They do wraps with eggs or bagel and egg sandwiches. They will also just cook eggs and veggies for people who don't want any carbs. Very nice folks.

Hey folks, summer is off to a crackin' start and before you know it vacations will be over and kids will be heading back to school!

Let's put some ideas & suggestions out there for what we here at Binghamton Area Losers can do together this summer!

I'm deliberately NOT going to put my ideas out there as I want to hear from folks so that we pull together a meet 'n greet gathering that appeals to many of YOU!

Post away and let's get ready to take this online support and put a "face" to it! :-)
