Here is a very easy low cal healthy soup.
Red Lentil Soup (Gourmet Oct 07)
1 lg onion, chopped
1 tb olive oil
4 garlic clolves, finely chopped
1 tsp ground cumin
1 Turkish or 1/2 California bay leaf
1 sprig fresh thyme
1 cup red lentils, picked over and rinsed
3 1/2 cups reduced sodium chicken broth
3 cups water
2 tb chopped flat leaf parsley
Accompaniment: lemon wedges
Cook onion in oil, with 1/2 tsp salt in a medium heavy saucepan over medium heat,stirring occas, until softened, about 8 minutes.
Add garlic, cumin, by leaf, thyme and cook stirring, 1 minute more. Add lentils, broth, water, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper and simmer, partly covered, stirring occas, until lentils are very soft and falling apart,
Discard bay leaf and thyme sprig, then puree 2 cups in blender (use caution with hot liquids in blender) and return to pan.
Stir in parsley.
(I would use less salt and add some chopped carrots with the lentils)
