You too, Hello15! I find that on days when I'm not motivated, it just takes one thing to get me going and then I can get quite a bit done.

Today, I so just wanted to stay in bed a sleep. But, after two days of horrid eating due to a workshop downtown, I got up and went to the 9:00 am spin class at the gym.

Sandy,
You should be encouraged.....you are making progress.
You track your food, and you are watching your sodium. Focus on what you are doing, what you are
going to do.......and go on from there. Add other
things, like the cardio when you feel like it.
I am totally proud of you for the progress you are
making, and the effort you are extending......
Congratulations..........remember, we are always
here, cheering you on.....praying for your success..

HI~
I'm very encouraged.I'm on day 10 of my 100 day challenge. I have met my goal of tracking my food, but have not been able to do cardio because I'm having MAJOR fatigue. So I'm celebrating that I ate right. I'm really trying to keep my sodium level down, and it is extremely hard. Much harder than I expected! My goal is to keep my sodium below 1,500 mg.

Well, today we were rainy then overcast with a 20 degree drop in temperature. I would really have preferred to come straight home after work, but I went to the gym and did my cardio anyway.

Roberta~ This was a test...you can't be perfect all the time. I bet your husband didn't go hunting for the chocolate or Crunch&Munch.Have you noticed that (most)men don't do emotional eating or worry about the cellulite on their thighs? They're not wired the same way as us.They don't wear their heart on their sleeve. But I know exactly what you're talking about. I have just gotten back on track after 6 weeks(count em!)of dying to eat...or eating to die?

View this experience as a lesson.I once had a WW coach, and when he weighed me,he would say,"Losing is the easy part...maintaining is the hard part." I always hated when he said that...I lost 100 lb,but do you think I kept them off? Within a matter of months,I started into my old way of thinking/eathing.I had not prepared myself for maintainence.I would walk by a mirror, and not know who that person was. That's how disassociated and unprepared I was.

So use these last few pounds, and time for practice.Get yourself emotionally & mentally ready, because if you're like I was (which I hope you're not) you're gonna be in shock.I know I don't have the best way of saying things, and I've probably depressed you more...but if you've done all of this hard work...eating healthy and working out, changing your lifestyle- you can see this through...ir you're prepared! You deserve it! emoticon

emoticon Tiff on the extra fruits and veggies.

I'm very proud of myself today. I wanted to throw in something extra "just in case" and I chose an orange. That's in addition to the grapes I brought. I've discovered I like eating the grapes on the way to the gym for work. Easy to eat while driving and they give me a little pick me up before exercise.

Wow, now I'm wondering what the deal is! I've been dealing with emotional eating a lot this week too! But I'm managing to mostly stay within my calorie range, and I'm starting to get more fruits and veggies in.

emoticon Hello15!

Roberta - today was sorta like that, but I managed to stick to what I packed. I have a "splurge" day and that's usually Friday when I have dinner out with a friend. Mind you, I still watch it, but I don't beat myself up if I go over. The rest of the day and the week, I'm good and generally stay within my range. Don't agonize over it - remember the joy of the visit and start from there.

AuntieMayme - I think you did just fine. 1/2 of 2 serving pizza is 1 serving and you are one person. Gosh, those peanuts sound great and remember they are good for you and did sugar free. So, same advice, know you enjoyed and start afresh the next day. Hopefully, enjoyed - I love chocolate covered peanuts.

Roberta, sounds like the emotions were kicking in. That happens to me also, even over good things. You get all built up and then even when it is over you seem to need something to take you down. I guess that sounds like a drug thing, but food can act like drugs. I know cookies are the same as valium. LOL.
I did good over the weekend until Sunday night and then I just had to have SOMETHING. I was able to have 1/2 of a 2 serving pizza and chocolate covered peanuts that were sugar-free. Not the best, but better than I used to do. All we can do is keep trying and learn from the past. And, like they say, if you fall off the wagon, climb right back on. Don't wait to start again the next day, or the next, etc.

Boy! is it the weather, the full moon or what? I did so badly over the weekend. I feel like I've taken three steps backward! I couldn't seem to be satisfied with anything I ate. I know it's emotional eating, but couldn't seem to get a handle on it! Does anyone else have to deal with that? My weekend was filled with good things, too! My cousin and his wife from out of state spent the weekend with me and I was so elated as she just recovered from a serious, serious bout with depression and this was the first time in two years that I had spoken with her. We tried to make up for lost time and I thoroughly enjoyed their visit, but when everything settled down, all I wanted to do was eat! Now, what's with that!!!?

Today, brought lunch like I usually do. Walked with a friend to the food court, but resisted chips and instead decided to go with what I have. I've got munchies today, but I'm determined to eat what I have and do a reasonable treat at home tonight.

Well...I'm on emoticon of starting over, and I was wondering if I even had it in me to go a whole day eating healthy. I guess I'll just do it one day at a time.

One thing that I'm very encouraged about is learning to eat so my liver doesn't ache...that's a good thing. You gotta love your liver, ya know!

My weekend has been weird. Terrible for veggies and fruits, but at a cookout at work on Friday, I had the veggie burger instead of the hamburger and yesterday I went out to a local burger place, but got the turkey burger. And, sweet potato fries instead of regular ones (which may make no difference, but they were good!).

You can Google "caffeine levels in drinks and food and find out what's lower.I think green tea is.And if you like sweet (if you're not against it) you could use a little splenda? I'm glad you're drinking plenty of water!

I know there's a SparkTeam for caffeine drinkers :)

Yeah, I've heard too that it's a diuretic, but I guess since I drink so much water, I've never noticed those effects emoticon . I had some tea yesterday with no sugar, but it had caffeine. It did make me a little jittery, but not as bad as a soda or coffee.

HI~
I guess I've been missing out on the caffeine forum! I drink 2 (12oz.)mugs/day BECAUSE I've been advised to...yup! People with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disorder)are low on hydrochloric(stomach)acid. They usually take meds to lower the acid content in their stomach.I,on the other hand, have LOW stomach acid. The acid helps you break down the food you eat.So when I drink my coffee,it's more like medicine for me.Are you buying this? It's true!

In the past,I have been a coffee addict...over a pot a day at times! Now,I can go without and not have any withdrawal effects,EXCEPT when I'm NPO before surgery, and I can't have anything to eat or drink for 12 hours. That's when I want the coffee!!!

So,IMHO,Tiffany's prob is sugar as opposed to caffeine. What I try to stay clear of is Starbucks & such...too much sugar and fat,and I think the espresso is bitter instead of better. That's all I have to say on the subject!OH...caffeine is a diuretic, which gets rid of fluids, but in WW,I heard that people lost better without caffeine...go figure!

Hi Tiffany,
I think we SO understand what you were saying. I have known people that get headaches when they DON'T drink it. Obviously they are having too much of it in the first place. And if you only enjoy it with something with sugar, then of course thats not going to work for what we are trying to do in the weight/sugars area. So you were making good sense.
I guess I was just wondering if there was anything related to actual dieting....like retaining water or doing something with blood sugars, in the actual caffeine, etc. But in my case, it is pretty much in moderation. So I am probably alright, although I keep getting this feeling I'd be better off without it. Probably cause it is a habit that is costing me money on a daily basis and I feel guilty. LOL So stick to your guns Tiffany. You are doing good! I am a believer that different things work for different people and sometimes we know what that is and sometimes we don't have a clue, therefore, we talk and exchange information and take away what we need and leave what we don't.

Please don't think I'm judging anyone else that hasn't quit caffeine. I really hope I'm not giving that impression! I'm with everyone else saying that it's ok in moderation. The reason I was so excited about having given it up is that I had gotten to a point where I couldn't function without it. Even that wouldn't be such a big problem if I could drink diet soda or black coffee (diet soda makes me sick, literally, and black coffee is just, well, *yuck*). But I was drinking regular soda or coffee with a ton of sugar in it. Besides being a bunch of extra calories, all that sugar and caffeine was having an effect on my blood sugar. I'm hypoglycemic and it was causing spikes and crashes, which are already starting to even back out. I have no doubt that I'll occasionally have something with caffeine in it, but I don't want to have to have it every day.KWIM?

Calories are not an issue with caffeine itself...there are none. I guess that's one reason I drink coffee, so I can get the energy boost without the calories. And my bone density is fine as I had it checked twice recently, once when I was checked to see if I broke my arm and once at a local health fair.

I'm with you Hello15. Right now, diet soda is pretty much my only vice, but I'm also getting my 8 glasses of water in (yesterday it was 12). I love the carbonation. I know it's got bad stuff, but I also don't drink coffee, so it's sole source caffeine for me and it has much less than coffee. One day, maybe.

I will add, that I drink a LOT of diet soda (though some days are better than others) and recently had a vitamin D deficiency, which can cause problems with absorption of calcium. The Dr was worried about bone density, so it was tested and it's very good. So, there might be other factors that come in to play, but it probably won't be caffeine or soda alone.

My 20 year old nephew tells me that caffeine is empty calories - meaning it is extra calories consumed that have no nutritional value.

Others have told me it can affect bone density if too much is consumed.

For me - well.... I no doubt consume too much, but it's not something at this point I'm ready to give up. I tried it once and I was strongly encouraged by co-workers to go back on it. LOL. So... think I'll hang on to this habit. : 0)

You'll probably get as many opinions as there are members of this group on the pros and cons of caffeine. Some say it makes them feel hungry...changes metabolism, etc. Others (me included)feel that, as is the case with many things, moderation is the key and that a couple of cups of coffee or hot chocolate isn't going to be damaging. I'm not a big fan of sodas as there are other chemicals in them and in my case I have a bladder sensitivity to the carbonation.

For me, it's all the extra sugar I was having with the caffeine. Like a lot of people, I had to start my day with caffeine, but I usually drank that in the form of a pepsi (not diet, can't stand diet). In the afternoon, I had gotten into a habit of getting a latte and adding a ton of sugar to it. And that was after I had cut down from drinking a 2-liter of soda a day! So by getting rid of my caffeine addiction, I am automatically cutting a bunch of calories out of my diet.

Question on the subject of caffeine. I know too much is not good for you but I don't know what the connection with caffeine and weight gain is? I am a diet Mountain Dew drinker at work and have some every day during the work week and sometimes 1 cup of coffee. I sometimes try to cut down on the MD but guess I am not too motivated because I really don't know why I should as far as health. Maybe you can enlighten me.

I am off caffeine completely! Kind of happened by accident because I was so busy, I didn't realize I hadn't had my morning coke over the weekend. It's been 3 days with absolutely NONE!

I had to stay late at work for a reception and I did nibble (though it could have been worse), however, even though it was late, I still did a short yoga routine.

Thanks, Sandy! It's nice to be missed! I'll probably be pretty quiet this week because I've got so much going on, but hopefully back in full next week.

I was without internet access all weekend, so I'll have to catch up today. This weekend, I got a ton of exercise in. Today, I'm being good to myself by taking the day off and relaxing.

MSG gives me headaches, so I suppose that is some
sort of allergy.

A lot of the products than Hodgson offers I have never been able to find in any grocery store.

Also, any thing with High fructose in it, Dr. Oz says
is addictive. LOL

I avoid anything with that and msg in it.

I love Hodgson Mill Products! We can get them at a couple of the local supermarkets now. When I first became acquainted with them, the health food store was the only place to find them.
I think we have to learn to strike a balance on ingredients. The only way it will be exactly the way we want it is to make everything from scratch and grow it ourselves. Not many of us are prepared to do that. If an ingredient is far down the list on the label, then there is not so much of it. So weigh the benefits against the liabilities. In my case, because I have a high intolerance for MSG, a flavor enhancer found in many, many prepared foods, the benefit of not eating them is far greater than eating it. (I once landed in the hospital because of it.)

D Ann, HodgsonMill is what the pancake mix is. I just stumbled on to it at the grocery store in their "health food" products isle. I will look for more items of that brand and also try their website. I guess I will have to read labels better because, although my bread is 100% whole wheat, reading the label it also says high fructose and I just read an article on sparkpeople warning about not getting products with that in it.
One more thing I learned. :-)

AuntieMayme,
Go to www.HodgsonMill.com

They have certified whole grain/whole wheat products
and you can order a free catalog. They have so many
wonderful products, pancake mix, whole wheat pasta's,
and manymany other certified products. They are priced reasonably, and you can order singles or multiples.
I love their items. Everything I have used is good.

I did relatively well at the German restaraunt. I ordered roast beef. The sides were sauerkraut, coleslaw, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes & brown gravy. I had a "normal" sized portion of everything, except mashed potatoes (my downfall!)When everybody else had pie,I ate mashed potatoes. They made fun of me,but then I'm used to that!

Had a great time with my friends who I haven't seen since I moved! The conversation was better than the food!

And my blood sugar was surprisingly lower than I expected!

AUNTIEMAYME~
Good luck on giving up the "whites". I have a really hard time finding 100% WHOLE wheat bread. Most of the labels say "enriched unbleached flour". Even the rye and oatmeal bread. Maybe it's just because I live in a more rural community, and we don't have the variety of a larger town.I have heard of people making Oatmeal Pancakes. You put the oats in the blender until they're a flour texture.

Have you tried the Sprouted bread? I used to buy it at a Health food store. It's considered wheat, but it has the texture of cardboard.

Let us know what kind of products you find. Maybe there's something that I could order over the net.

Thanks, Sandy

So you went to a spin class, huh? Cool! They are not available here in the boondocks. I did some research on the bikes, to see if I could maybe buy a bike and do it at home. They say to be totally affective, the classes are the only way to go...like a group experience.I even looked at a used Spin bike. Those things look uncomfortable! I can understand why you stand up part of the time...to get the feeling back below your waist! I'm too old for that stuff...I got me a recumbent bike- cushy but a good workout.Let us know how the classes go!

I am giving up on white bread, rice, pasta, etc. Therefore, I had given up on my weekend pancake breakfast. However, this morning I made some from whole wheat mix and was surprised that they were better than the regular mix. I had 2 small ones with reduced calorie syrup on them....but hardly any, and it was very enjoyable. Guess it pays to try new things.

I took all my meds and checked my blood sugar as soon as I got up...usually I take my time about it.

I'm going to eat family-style at a German-American restaurant. I will try to concentrate on the more healthy things. Let you know later what I ate.

I got a Turtle Latte at my Jave Lounge, and the syrup was sugarless(made with Splenda)caramel, white chocolate, and hazlenut. And I had them use skim milk,so it only counted as 1/2 milk. This was my own creation.Maybe they'll put me on the board!

I typically will have 1-3 diet soda per week. I do, however, drink my share of coffee (and must be caffeinated).

Tough day - one of 'those' days at work and of course the extra 2 pounds weren't the highlight of the day.

But... at least it's only 2. Will pick it all back up and work to have that 2 back off soon.

I'm a diet soda drinker and it's my only bad habit, but I also manage to drink my water. One day, I know I'll decide to cut back, but right now I'd rather head for a diet soda than food when I get stressed and I'm getting good about not doing that either.

My good today - I took a WW for lunch that I used to like. Big 'ole ICK. It was terrible. Smelled bad and tasted like cardboard. They have others I like but this was horrible. I was trying to mix up lunch a bit because the same thing can get old. Anyway, I ate half of it and tossed the rest. But rather than go in search of junk food, I ate a mini snack bag of popcorn, which is filling and has some fiber too boot.

Hello15 ~ sorry to hear about the gain, I know it's a bummer (see my earlier post in Unofficial Back on Track). But, you chose green tea which is good calories and caffeine! Congrats on your "good" today, don't let the WI take that away. Someone has a saying on their board about staying focused on today b/c the you can't win in the past. I think that applies mightily to weight gains!

Yesterday (10/3) I had dinner out, ate a big salad w/ff dressing and split some tapas with my hubby. I stopped eating when I was full, comfortably full, not stuffed! (this is a big deal for me!)

Adlins ~ I ended up eating the cake last night, not the orange!

Today, I left work late. Still went to the gym. Had a hard time getting the weights, but did all but one exercise. Tempted to do cake for dessert, but think I'll eat my orange instead.

Today - I chose a granola bar over the chocolatey selections sitting in the office halloween bowl of what else but halloween candy.

Good job, TS!

I wanted a snack yesterday afternoon, and automatically grabbed an apple and some peanut butter. 3 months ago, I would have chosen chips or chocolate or some other really fatty thing.

I had a great day , not obsessing with calories.

However, my fish and veg stir fry for dinner. A new recipe that I tried was rather on the small side therefore leaving me feeling not quite as full.

First, I delayed going in search of what next to eat; in order for the brain to register that I had eaten. Only 15- 20 min later did I select to have a 175 ml tub of yoghurt for dessert (the other option I considered was a cup of hot cocoa).

I went to bed with a comfortable tummy!

I didn't have coffee yesterday afternoon even though I REALLY wanted it.

I was away from the office (off site) most of the morning, but I bypassed lunch from Wendy's for what I brought and ate one of the two pieces of fruit I took.

I went on a bit of a binge this afternoon, but I managed to stop myself before it got too crazy. Also, I lost a pound at my weigh-in today!

Yesterday, I nipped an ice cream binge in the bud. I had a couple of servings of Blue Bunny low fat no sugar added peanut butter fudge ice cream. Then I realized where I was headed with that. (open package = one serving ) Gave myself a pep talk, sat down and logged what I had actually eaten, saw that life wasn't ruined after all and go back on track!

I had a TON of reading to do for tomorrow's classes, and even though it took a long time, I persisted and got all of it done in time to go to bed at a reasonable hour! I didn't even snack like I usually do under stress.

My good thing for the day is that I rested. I pushed myself really hard last week and am tired and sore. I feel like I have to go hard every day, but I am learning that rest is part of the equation so I don't get hurt and can keep going!

Wow! What an inspiring challenge, and I'm really impressed with the awesome progress everyone's making!

For my good thing today, I passed up the donuts at church this morning. I'm finally getting it into my head that I don't have to eat something just because it's put in front of me.

My goods for today: I did yoga this morning; substituted applesauce for oil when I made muffins (entered in the recipe tracker, so I know the damage) and made mini instead of regular muffins, and I'm trying ItsNever2Late's Turkey Broccoli bake tonight.

well... overall it's been a pretty good day for me. Although rather than eat I spent money so... I dunno.

My clothes are in need of replacing though - too big for once instead of too small. Yea!! So, it was needed - and still good use more.

My good today is I got lots of walking in while shopping. I also am having baked talipia for supper.

Hmmm. Let's see, I did good on breakfast and dinner, but had lunch out. A mini pizza (and it was good, but small). I haven't looked up the calories yet, but I will. However, NO snacking, which on the weekends is a biggie for me.

And, I exercised tonight - strength training and the elliptical machine.

I'm going to start a day early too because I'm just so proud of myself. I went to the mall today and knew I was going to be there for a long time. So I brought a yogurt and pear with me and had looked up what eateries were there. I was therefore able to resist all the goodies in the food court and eat a 6 in turkey sub on whole wheat with baked lays. I've never been able to pass up pizza so I was really proud of myself! As a result I was able to buy size 8 pants!! I've never been a size 8 - ever - and in May I was a size 14 in the same store!

Great challenge! I look forward to hearing what you all do right this week

Hi, HELLO15, this is a good challenge we seem to dwell on the things we didn't do right and forget all the stuff we did do right, and we should pat ourselves on the back a lot more often then we do, this will help us be more positive, thanks!

Pat Yourself on the Back

When you do the right thing, enjoy it! When you take positive actions, enjoy them. After all, they are leading you toward positive results. Pat yourself on the back. Truly enjoy the fact that you're making positive progress, and the negative temptations will have no power over you.

Sometimes we are our biggest hurdle. It seems that we all hit those moments where we eat something we shouldn't, overdo it at a family get together or office potluck, or just simply get out of our routine and find we have slipped back into old patterns.

In an effort to help keep us all motivated by noticing that even if we've slipped up we don't have to stop there, for this coming week: September 30 - October 6th, the challenge is to name one thing that you did right today.

This can be sticking to your nutritional goals, exercise, or maybe just getting out of bed.

Let's hear what we are doing right in effort to help us all keep the motivation going.

Have a wonderful upcoming week. Welcome to any new members I haven't sent a welcome too yet, and whether you have been here from the start or just joining in you are welcome here.
