I just bought a 50# bag and stand off of Craigslist for $75. I've just started using it yesterday and can't wait for tomorrow morning to come so I can kick/punch/spaz!!!

I do both wrapping, just around when I'm lazy and in between when I feel not so lazy. When I switch between my speed bag and heavy bag, I skip the wrapping. I have a pair of lightweight gloves i use when I'm super lazy. Shotokan purple belt also weapons, Kama, nunchuk, and bo. i'm new t the weapons and really enjoy them, a total workout. Image tried to get my wife interested on martial arts, but she has no interest. This week I'm concentrating on my treadmill.

Should I wrap my hand wraps between my fingers to or just around my knuckles? Trying to get the most out of hand wraps cuz my stupid knuckles are so weak and keep bruising / getting sore. The gloves with more padding that are my husbands hurt less but they r too big grr.

I'm in Goju ryu karate just starting out but I was in Ju Jitsu up to blue belt till I was 12 as well

i'm keeping it simple, I set up a timer for either 3 min with 1 min rest or 2 min with 30 sec rest and punch and kick. I also alternate between the heavy and speed bag. I have been practicing Shotokan for a while and totally enjoy it.

Ann - are you seeing any difference in your upper body? I think the heavy bag really changed my rib cage and leaned it up.

My hand, where I had a wart treated, is all better so hope to be back on the heavy bag today.

Reading up more about the heavy bag so I'm thinking that I may change my routine to one that uses bursts of activity with a 2-minute round, followed with a short rest cycle, more like bouts

Ann - for whatever reason, I am seeing a huge difference in my upper body ribcage. I think this exercise - Pullovers - is toning up those lats

Yet, I also think that doing all the boxing and pushups is building up the entire upper body.

Honestly, when I do mine, I scatter it through the day. I try to do the pushups first thing in the morning before I do anything else so I have the strength to get them done!

Then I do my strength training in the a.m. hopefully before lunch, usually around 10 a.m.

Around 4 or about an hour after dinner I do the boxing workout.

It's really about what works for you!

What I've done with my own workout Ann is add it on my strength training days but if you put together your workouts with cardio that would be okay too.

For example, ideally I would like to do 10 minutes jumping rope, maypbe a kickboxing dvd about 20 minutes and then do the heavy bag with the speedbag.

Be creative!

So what is this challenge about?

1.) Use a heavy bag in your routine 2x a week - can either be boxing or a combination of punches and kicks.

2.) Design a routine that fits your goals (building strength, endurance, response, toning, etc...) Be sure to follow these links provided to design your own.

3.) Minimum of 10 minute workout on the bag which can be combined with other workouts such as jumping rope, dvd, strength training etc...

4.) If you don't have a heavy bag, substitute with a cobra bag (mounted on a stand, portable) for this workout.

Rather a long video, but the commentator shows you how he has marked his bag to help him to target the body. He also talks about how he strategizes to fake out his opponent with a right jab, causing the opponent to raise his hands high, leaving his ribs vulnerable to a left hook.

Ann I'm using these links to improve my own heavy bag work. I can see from watching the videos and reading that I've not been as creative as I could have been!

1.) Warmup - I was jumping rope but with my calf injury, I'm now using my hula hooping to warm up my abs and back.

2.) Stretching - not only the legs but also the upper back and arms.

3.) Warm up on bag - I start punching lightly, changing sides, and now I'll add bob and weave and the footwork before getting into heavier punches.

4.) Punches - I start with singles, then double combinations and lastly do three combinations. With singles, I punch high and low on the bag; with doubles, I concentrate on form and making sure I keep my guard up; with triples, I start to lose form and lose my guard so I have to watch that.

5.) If I get too tired, I switch to the speedbag to keep going.

This challenge is specific to the heavy bag. If you don't have access to one at home you may find one at your local gym, even if they don't cater to boxing. For instance, my Y has one but it is in one of the workout rooms and not on the general floor.

This is a great link to lots of info
