Spiritual Nourishment: How Eating Impacts Your Soul

There is an old Bavarian saying: Eating keeps body and soul together. Evidence now suggests that our spiritual lives impact our relationship with food and that the foods we eat can affect our spiritual sensibilities.

Dine Like a Yogi
The ancient seers who developed yoga may have been the worldís first nutritionists, looking for a diet that could contribute to both health of body and peace of mind. They determined that aged, stale, overcooked foods led to lethargy and laziness, while caffeine, hot spices and even an excess of animal protein created a level of stimulation that was antagonistic to the spiritual life.

They suggested instead a diet comprised primarily of fresh vegetables, whole grains, fruits, beans, nuts and ďmilk from healthy cows.Ē This is surprisingly close to todayís cutting-edge nutritional recommendations that call for eating five to 10 daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, consuming minimally refined grains (oatmeal, 100 percent whole-wheat bread and brown rice) and choosing plant protein options (e.g., garbanzos, lentils and soy products, such as edamame and tofu) several times a week.

How to keep Chlorine From Wrecking your Hair, Skin and Swimsuit.

As temperatures rise, I find myself longing for a cool dip in the pool. Swimming is by far my favorite summer activity. Itís a total-body workout thatís easy on the joints, and makes me leaner, healthier, and more active.

Thereís one thing I donít love about swimming: Chlorine. If Iím not careful, it can turn my skin itchy and red, and my hair dry and brittle. Since I swim almost every day during the summer, chlorine also shreds and fades my swimsuits long before the season ends.

And on top of that, Iím currently worried about destroying my freshly colored hair. So I did some research and product-testing to find out what really works. This is what Iíve learned.

Slap on some hair product
Chlorine is used as a disinfectant to kill harmful bacteria in the water. This keeps you from getting sick from E. coli and other nasty germs, but it also strips out the natural oils that protect your hair from damage and daily wear. Since I donít want my hair to turn into hay, Iíve learned to coat my strands with hair product before I jump into the pool. Oil and silicone-based products are best. Iíve used silicone-based hair serum, the type meant to calm frizzies and protect hair from heat-styling. Another option is coconut oil, which also delivers shine and moisture to my parched locks. Other products on the market are designed particularly for this problem. Iím currently using Phyto Plage Protective Sun Veil ($22). It contains castor oil, and protects hair from the damaging effects of sun, salt, and chlorine.

Got asthma? Your pillow, a haven for dust mites, could be making matters worse. Wash your pillows regularly and replace them annually.
No matter how picky we are about our bunkmates, there will always be unwelcome visitors. Namely, dust mites. They love a warm environment like your bed just as much as you do. And since they snack on dead skin cells, they have no reason to leave. (Weíre guessing they never heard the saying about not relieving themselves where they eat.) Good news is, theyíre harmless unless you have allergies or asthma.
To keep their count down, wash your sheets in hot water regularly, and fluff your pillow in the dryer on its hottest setting. The most recent information on dust mites suggests using a combination of physical measures - including pillow and mattress covers, washing bedding in hot water and carpet removal - rather than chemical treatments. But be forewarned: at least three to six months of sustained intervention is necessary to show real benefit. That means you should put measures in place that you can sustain over time and expect symptoms to improve gradually.

Made of Mud

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANothing could be plainer than a brick, a baked slab of clay mud. But that same mud is also the basis for elaborate flowered decoration. For that matter, in the Hebrew story of Genesis it is the material from which human beings are made.

What wonderful thing have you made from the plainest building blocks?

Chew Away Your Acid Reflux

For those who suffer from acid reflux, try chewing a sugar-free piece of gum after each meal. Chewing gum will help boost the production of saliva, which will help neutralize the stomach acids that cause reflux.

implify Healthy Eating

Good nutrition is another wellness basic, and the best way to get your nutrients is through food rather than supplements, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Eating a healthy, well rounded diet each day can seem like a chore, but not if you incorporate nutritious foods in tempting dishes. For instance, you can get a lot of folate---an important B vitamin--- from plain old beans, or you can make those beans the centerpiece of a savory burrito with some salsa, cheese and sour cream. Likewise with cancer-fighting compounds called flavenoids. They're found in carrots and cabbage, which sound boring until you turn them into tangy, tasty cole slaw; they're also in apples and blueberries, which are easy to dress up in parfaits and smoothies.

A Song for the Soul

If you like to sing, go for it! Singing will help improve your breathing as well as your muscle tone. And if you don't think you can carry tune but still want to improve your breathing, try humming instead. It is a good way to open up your sinuses.

Milk Does a Body Good

Most Americans are calcium-deprived. If you're one of them, think about changing your ways. Getting enough calcium, Vitamin D, and other minerals can help you build strong bones and stay strong throughout your lifetime.

Defend Yourself with Salmon

Increasing the amount of salmon in your diet could prevent you from having a heart attack. Studies show that people who eat the pink-flesh fish are less likely to suffer from heart failure due to arrhythmia, so do your best to eat at least one serving of salmon per week. And if you can find it, freshly caught salmon is better for you than farm-raised.

Breathe In, Breathe Out

If you're feeling stressed, take a few slow, deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose and fill your lungs all the way before exhaling. Nitric oxide from the back of your nose will release into your body and help to open up blood vessels. This extra oxygen will wake you up and make you feel more refreshed.

Count Your Steps

An easy way to get physically active is to use a pedometer to measure your steps. Just clip one to your belt and monitor all the steps you take throughout the day. This will give you an idea of how active you are. If you aren't taking 10,000 steps per day, find more excuses to walk.

Make It a Multivitamin

It's difficult to get the nutrients our bodies need from a well-balanced diet. That's why taking a multivitamin every day is important. Compensate for natural deficiencies by taking Vitamins C and D and Zinc. If you miss meals, vitamins are even more important.

You're Not Too Busy to Eat Right

If you don't have time for lunch, pack a piece of fruit. Take an apple or banana when you leave for work, and eat it when you need a boost. Fruits come in natural, easy-to-open packages, and contain raw sugars that help you think on your feet.

Feel Better About Paying More

Many people resist buying organic foods because of cost. If you shop at farmers' markets, you can beat grocery store prices. You'll feel better about supporting farmers in your area. So the food tastes better and you're doing something good.

Make a Gradual Change to Organics

Don't make the change to an organic diet overnight. Make the change one ingredient at a time. This makes the transition easier. Start simply, for example, by trying organic bananas. Organics are not sprayed with pesticides or grown with fertilizers.

Plan to Avoid Impulse Buying

A great way to save money and eat healthy is to make a list and only buy those items. Plan your meals with a healthy cookbook and only buy items you need for daily meals. Don't just grab what looks good because acting on those impulses leads to unhealthy eating.

Keep Some Aloe on Hand

Aloe Vera is a natural product with amazing healing powers. It is soothing for treatment of sunburn. Keep a plant in your home, and peel parts of it to apply to burned or damaged skin. Or, pick it up at your pharmacy. It contains nutrients and is a natural moisturizer.

Tune Out

Go for a walk, visit an art museum, or go to the park with your kids instead of spending time hanging out with your electronic devices. While these devices are wonderful and useful, they do not stimulate our senses like listening to live music or looking at an amazing painting will. Turning off your electronic devices will also give you more time for meditation and relaxation.

One at a Time, Please

List-making is a fabulous tool to reduce stress and improve mental health. Create lists based on priorities beginning with what is most important and needs to be accomplished first, second, third, etc. List-making will give you a feeling of accomplishment as you check off each completed item, as well as keeping you organized, on track, and less overwhelmed.

Most people know that junk food is bad for the body, but now research is showing itís also bad for the brain. Trans fats, which are found in many processed and pre-packaged foods, were shown to hurt cognition in a study on the brain function of aging people. On the other hand, elderly people who ate a diet high in omega-3 fats, along with vitamins B, C, D and E, exhibited better brain health, proven by cognitive tests.

Staying Motivated...

...is key to achieving your goals. If you are just starting out, the changes to your lifestyle can seem overwhelming. The following tips can help you stick to your fitness program:

1. Begin slowly. Even though you're anxious to get moving and see results, your body needs to adjust to your new routine. Make sure you begin every workout with some stretching exercises to warm up. Then start off with 30 minutes of cardio - walking, biking, hiking or a low-impact exercise class. Gradually increase your workouts as your endurance increases.

Water, often taken for granted, is an important addition to a successful diet. It is recommended that adults drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. The benefits of this water intake recommendation include:

Water makes you feel full, thereby suppressing appetite.
Adequate amounts of water will help rid the body of metabolized fat and waste.
Water may help to relieve constipation, which is common problem when dieting.

Ways Seniors Can Fight Constipation

As we age, the movement of food through our intestines slows, leading to potential problems with constipation, especially if we aren't eating well and are not very active. It is important for seniors to eat regularly and include fiber in their diets. Cutting food into smaller pieces and chewing very carefully before swallowing can also help.

Ways to Spot Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis causes bones to become extremely weak and brittle, often resulting in fractures from even the mildest stress. Some of its symptoms include severe back pain, a loss of height over a period of time, and a fracture of a vertebra, wrist, hip, or some other bone. You can also develop a stooped over posture. Any older adult with these symptoms needs to see their doctor.

One Way to Prevent Falls

Adults over 65 face a 1 in 3 chance of suffering a fall each year. Changing your footwear is one way to reduce these odds. Be sure to wear shoes that fit right, are sturdy, and come with nonskid soles. Don't buy shoes with extra-thick soles or that slip on. Make sure your laces are tightly tied. If you have difficulty tying your laces, get shoes with Velcro fasteners instead.

Symptoms of Hearing Loss

It is common for us to experience gradual hearing loss as we age. If you begin to notice that you are frequently asking people to speak slower or louder, need to turn up the volume of the TV or radio, or have difficulty understanding words when there is background noise, you should consult your doctor and see what can be done to help your hearing.
