When I was first diagnosed, my doctor told me not to worry about food and continue eating the way I was eating and she'd adjust medication based on how I ate.

I used to have issues digesting cruciferous vegetables; but, that has changed with focused attention on improving my gut health. Now, I can digest those vegetables and have been eating them more regularly.

When I went in for my annual exam, my TSH values were too elevated; but, were not extremely high. So, they will be retested in late November/early December. I suspect that it will be necessary to increase the dosage of my thyroid medication at that time.

I have been taking thyroid medication for 20+ years and my dosage has been adjusted many times ... both up and down.

Stress, illness, injury have all impacted thyroid function for me. And, feeling anxious with no known cause? Red flag that my thyroid levels need to be tested. Sluggish bowels? Another red flag. Muscle / connective tissue / join pain? Another red flag. Impaired balance? Another red flag. Lack of muscle coordination? Another red flag.

Our thyroid function impacts SO MANY things. I could go on and list more things. Those listed above tend to be the things that are most likely to be impacted first for me. If I'm fatigued, I'm in serious trouble. Fatigue seems to come later down the line for me. I notice the other red flags long before fatigue sets in.

I have been on meds for my thyroid for almost 40 years. My meds have been ibcreased and decreased continuallly. I am at my lowest for a while and waiting to see if I will have it reduced again. I have suffered from anxiety and that semed to ease after I lost weight and was taken off my blood pressure meds. Mind you I still have my anxiety times! I have never altered my diet as I love all those foods you mentioned.

It has been awhile since anyone has posted here, but it feels very relevant right now. My meds have been stable for a few years, since I was diagnosed about two years ago. I go for my blood work in just over a month. I wonder if my dose will be increased at that time. I have been quite tired and my muscles have been aching a bit.

In my readings about hypothyroidism, I have read that they are looking to see if there is a link between hypothyroidism and anxiety, so perhaps this research will eventually provide answers to the commenters below. As far as the broccoli and these sorts of vegetables, I have read that brassicas are not great for the condition, along with walnuts, peaches, and calcium. However, my impression was that they impact the absorption of the medication and should, therefore, be avoided around that time and eaten in limited quantities at other times. However, my doctor hasn't been particularly concerned.

I am so glad to have found this group. Hashimoto's seems to bring as many questions as it provides answers about my health. It is great to find others who have shared experiences and may have ideas and answers.

Good luck to her and her parents. I am sure that once she has started her medication things will improve. I am sure yiu will be a good mentor.

You are correct; it was late when I wrote that, and I know better. That was a typo. Yes, she has hypothyroidism. She's to go to Children's Hospital this coming week. emoticon

To my knowledge, no one in her family has had it, although my mother-in-law (her grandmother) was diagnosed a few years ago with hypothyroidism. However, I think hers may be the result of another, more serious illness a few years ago. I am only her aunt by marriage, but I think it's uncanny that she and I were both born to older parents, and we both have it.

The parents are going to have an uphill battle with her.

she was diagnosed with hypERthyroidism? I thought you were hyperactive and your metabolism was faster with that. I was 35 when diagnosed with hypOthyroidism. My dad had it and so do my two sons. It is hereditary. I have informed my granddaughters' doctor to watch out for it.

My husband's 3-year-old niece was just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. She's already 35 pounds overweight! emoticon I'm starting to think she and I have something in common; we were both born to older parents. My husband's sister was even older when her daughter was born that my mother was when I was born. Our niece's mother is also undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

I guess I'm wondering if any of you were diagnosed that young. I wasn't.

My meds were reduced just after Christmas and find I haven't lost any weight since then! There again, I was diagnosed with IBS before Christmas and I am trying to see which foods I can eat.

I'm not on meds, yet. Get retested in May to verify. In the meantime, losing weight and changing diet. Dr is ready to wean me from blood pressure meds as my numbers are getting to low. I've been avoiding salt to lower BP. If I add it back into my diet, will it help reverse the thyroid issue or just raise my BP again. Any ideas or suggestions?

I asked my doctor this and was told "no." However, my medication was reduced after a year of consistent movement and improved nutrition. The dose needed to be increased the following year. So, I have essentially seen no change in dosing of my thyroid medication overall.

Prior to the weight loss, it was not uncommon for the dose to be increased one year and then later reduced. So, this has been common for me. My medication dosage has not been fixed for 20 years. It goes up and down.

Another question! If you lose weight, does your thyroid medication have to be changed?
I go for my yearly check up in a couple of months and will ask my doctor this question but was just curious!

I am unaware of any link between hypothyroidism and anxiety. However, I have seen research indicating a link between anxiety and low levels of DHA (a particular omega 3 fatty acid ... think fish oil).

I also struggle with anxiety at times, but never thought it could be related to my thyroid!
I recently lost 30 pounds, just out of curiosity, anyone else have issues with their thyroid after a weight loss. I've been feeling tired this week, and wondered if it could be my thyroid acting up.

I have had anxiety attacks for years, but never thought about whether it might be related to my hypothyroidism. Interesting question, and I will be watching to see if anyone else may know the answer.

Do anxiety attacks come with hypothyroidism? I have been on meds for my thyroid for nearly 40 years but have had anxiety attacks infrequently up until the last few years. Just wondered if anyone else has this problem.

Started on 5 mg cytomel about a month ago. Weight gain has stopped but can't seem to lose any weight. This is my biggest struggle unable to lose anyone else have experiences with cytomel? I am also on levothyroxine 50. Was diagnosed last October. My weight goes up a few pounds then goes down a few pounds. Cannot budge it past that point. Symptoms are in check but weight is my biggest hurdle. Following WW on my own cant see paying when I can get the app for my phone. Thoughts?

today i am meeting with my primary care doctor to get a treatment plan. i was diagnosed by our workplace NP who i work with for several of our healthy workplace programs. she was actually the one that ordered my blood test and gave my the diagnoses as hypothyroid.
after calling my doctors office 3 times to get information they formally blew me off as asymptomatic. I asked her to look at the notes again because i did report a list of symptoms and she said they did not have them. so i made an appointment with the primary care dr. i am hoping i can make him listen.

I can't say for sure, but I eat a lot of broccoli and have never been told that I should stop. It is one of my favorite veggies, so is one that I eat often. I can't give you any official information though, just my own experience.

Hello,

I was hoping I can get some insight. My endocrinologist said that I can have kale, spinach, and broccoli. Every article that I have read has said to stay away from those veggies as they no good for your thyroid.

I am so confused. I am hoping that this is not the case since I absolutely love to put these in my Nutri-bullet for juicing.

Any thoughts?

Thanks emoticon

I've been on synthroid for about 30 years now. A couple of months ago I changed doctors, and she never filled my prescription despite repeated calls to request this med.I have been without for about a month now and all symptoms have returned, along with about 20 pounds. I just changed drs again and am back on my meds. I'm hoping to get back on track soon.

I believe he (Benjamin Franklin) was referring to the types and amounts of foods we put into our body... I took and copied that portion of a paragraph out of a diet book I was reading... I'll try not to paraphrase anymore...

I hope life goes better for you .. you have my prayers - I have had similar problems - and the cytomel did nothing to help matters .. I get 741 a month and rent went up this month to 525 - at least they increased food stamps , but we get a little raise come jan so they will just take it away -
I just don't understand life ... each year is getting worse instead of better .. keep on keepin on

From Sept to Nov 2014; I wouldn’t have believed it at the time, but the setbacks (18.5 lbs. weight gain) and hardships (laptop crashed and fried) I have faced will actually help me to move forward now. Today I started back on the hypothyroid diet, taking (all) my supplements, doing yoga and tai chi for flexibility and strength training. Hopefully I am in the right frame of mind and willpower to continue after pulling myself out of this two month health slump. Keep me in mind and prayer please...

Went to the endocrinologist on Tuesday. He took some blood to see what is going on with me and my endocrine system. Had an MRI in April and found that I had a Rathke's cleft cyst on my pituitary gland. Will get all results on June 30.

After reading the information shared about Hypothyrodism from you all, I am beginning to see why I have been feeling the way that I have and have starting looking more closely at my food intake. I also have hypertension and cholesterol problems and It has been a struggle to keep everything in perspective with my conditions. I am on so many medications.

It is my hope that one day I will be able to decrease some of these meds. That is why it so important for me to be on a team like this. I do appreciate you and all of your support.

This week has been very busy. I was taken out of my comfort zone and safe haven. I did not do well. I hope that after Sunday things will begin to settle down and I can get back on track.

I am doing well otherwise. I just want to get back into my routine and I will.

No I don't think you are whining. That is what this team is for, I think. My doctor finally agreed to refer me to endocrinology. More tests and in the meantime I have gained 5 more pounds. I am really frightened because I may develop diabetes because of this weight gain. I keep doing what I am supposed to do and pray that once the additional tests are done that they may see the need to adjust my medication.

Never Explain. Your friends do not need it and your enemies will not believe it anyway. So whatever you are, be a good one.

I too agree that to find the Doctor that really listens is very difficult. In two weeks or a little less, I am going back to my endrocrinologist that I saw two years ago. She seemed better but I have read recently that an endocrinologist may not be the best for Hypothyroidism struggle seems more difficult this time around than before. I had lost 11 pounds and have put back on a pound. I know that does not sound like much but for 99% of the time I write down everything I put in my mouth.(good and not so good) I am going to the gym on average of 5 days a week and lifting weights on off days. It is so very hard to keep optimistic when minor deviations shows up on the scales. And too, even though I have lost 10 pounds the clothes do not fit any different!
Sorry for all this whining! I still feel healthy and look and listen to people 15-20 younger than me and I know I am in better health.

Don't give up! Keep fighting until you find a doctors that will listen to you. My doctors look at my blood tests and tell me I am normal. They do not even look at me or hear me. I am currently in the middle of trying to convince my doctors that I need to have my medication (synthroid) adjusted. I am exhibiting all the CLASSIC signs of Hypothyroidism. My weight has steadily crawled up and I now fluctuate between 210 and 225 pounds. My doctor keeps trying to convey to me that it is my fault and that I am not doing my part(exercise, diet, strength training) in order to lose weight. So they send me to nutritionists, recommend that I exercise more. Keep fighting...It is your health. I am beginning to realize that most doctors don't pay enough attention to the updates in treatment of the thyroid. I am going to keep fighting until someone hears me and understands. I am now on the verge of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, I have high blood pressure and if these doctors could only understand that my hormone needs to be adjusted my world would be a lot better. By the way, I am seeing doctors at the Veterans Hospital and the military base where I live and it is hard to get referrals when they do not believe you. But I am not giving up, you should not either.

Never Explain. Your friends do not need it and your enemies will not believe it anyway. So whatever you are, be a good one.

Has anyone heard of Dr. Michael L. Johnson D.C., D.A.C.N.B

He wrote this book and can be downloaded for free. There seems to be a lot of good information. Would like to know your thoughts.

I will go over there and look around. I'd like to do more, if there is more that I can do, to alleviate what Hashimoto's does to my body. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing the resource. Looks like they have groups on many different topics and health conditions. Should be great for people who are dealing with health conditions that are not covered here or who need additional info or support.

Over one year ago I joined the following site. It offers support to all types of conditions including Hypothyroidism. I have looked through the blogs and the help is quite good. Have a look and see if you want to join. In the Hypothyroid team there's over 1,000 members.
