That's interesting. I'll keep that in mind. The doctor has me eating a protein, a veg, a fruit and a piece of GF toast at lunch and dinner. I usually eat the meat and veg and feel fine. A couple of hours later I usually have a fruit for a snack and then the toast if I'm starving before dinner or bedtime. Keeping things simple has been good for me and less stressful, but a bit boring.

When I get that ravenous hunger shortly after eating, it is usually because I didn't eat balanced. For a long time every time I ate I had to have even a bite of all food groups to avoid that. This time around I haven't noticed that to be an issue.

Wow, I hope I do as well as you! I do know that when I eat peanut butter, I'm ravenous an hour later, and that's with just plain ground peanuts, no sugar.

I just added salmon back into my diet. I hope it doesn't cause weight gain because I grilled a couple of extra salmon burgers for lunch this week.

Using the scale as a tool like that is amazing. I discovered eating one tablespoon of peanut butter more than two days in a row would cause weight gain, even if I was low calorie. At one time I also couldn't eat peanut butter and cottage cheese on the same day.

I've always done better when I weigh every day. Now my doctor wants me weigh every day and keep a journal. The plan is for me to learn what foods are a problem.

instead of dreading the scale, i look forward to my weigh-ins with an uplifted hopeful feeling. no matter what the readout is, i can use it to improve my efforts over the next week (i do weekly weigh-ins). in addition to this, i bought a full body composition scale, and instead of focusing on just my weight as an indicator of my progress, i factor in all of my measurements, including % body fat and % muscle mass. these numbers work together to let me know if i have been working out wrong or eating wrong, or if i am on the right track. at the beginning of a new weight-lifting regimen my weight often goes up, but so does my muscle mass, and my body fat goes down. this is more desirable to me than for the pounds to drop.

I have a terrible time with the scale. I am addicted to checking in every single day. For me it gives me affirmation that the work I did the day before was either good or bad. I'm afraid if I don't check in daily that I may get lax in my in my efforts and not make progress. On the other hand I love seeing when people do a weekly weigh in and have big losses ... weighing in daily of course there are never any BIG losses. Yes, I'm a little stressed by the scale lol

Let's build some muscle and burn some fat!

I weigh in once a week. I couldnt handle the daily fluctuation of weight. I know that if I gained in 7 days then I gained and I need to make better choices. Its worked for me the last 3 months so Im gonna charge on.. :)

Hello. I'm joining in right now for the first time. I hate the scale. I weigh in once a week always hoping for a loss. I think I need to rethink this and focus on all of the positive, healthy choices I make daily. Thanks for the support.

Weigh Ins definitely have an effect on me. They used to be the only thing that mattered. If I didn't lose weight I would try and cut something drastic out of my diet which clearly wouldn't work. And then when I failed at that I would get very discouraged and drink and eat and then I would really be behind.

Now if the scale goes up instead of down I make adjustments but not proclamations that I will not eat carbs for a week or only eat vegetables at every meal or workout for two hours every day. I just adjust and trust that next weigh in is a week away. A week of good choices and fresh starts.

I enjoy the weigh in because I know it will show results. If I did well during the week, following my goals and staying away from my vices, the scale shows by going down, but when I do bad and ate alot, the scale falls but I know what I need to do to make it go down again.

although my numbers are not going down on the scale, they are also not going up. I am working out and muscle weighs more that fat. I do know that i am trading my fat for muscle becasue I have more energy, am able to continue longer, and my clothes are fitting better. In time the nubers will be reflective, but for now I am satisfied.

Yay! Anytime we have a loss on the scale is wonderful.

I know we arent supposed to focus on that number, but sometimes it is soo hard not to. :)

I focus on it a lot! I don't let it define me, but it does weigh heavy on the choices I make.

Weighed in this morning, and was happy to see I've lost some of the vacation weight. I think the antihistimine I was on caused some water weight. But even tho' I know it's just water, not real weight, I was still happy.

I get on the scales every morning, but I only do my measurements once a month. However I do know that I am losing inches be because I have gone down 2 pant sizes and 2 top sizes. But when I do my measurement they don't seam to be going down fast enough.

It took time to put the weight and inches on and it will take time to take it off. I am now down 24 pounds in 4 1/2 months.

If you believe you can do it, you will do it.

Hi! First posting here; not quite sure how this works but I'll give it a shot. I too weigh in every day not one one but on two scales! No, I'm not obsessed... really. I have a large analog scale and the numbers are in increments of five and it is difficult for me to see the marks in between. So, I bought a digital scale which is easier to see the numbers and it also gives the fractions too. The problem with the digital scale is that is it reads 4 pounds higher than the analog. So, I cross check as a reference point. I also take my measurements every Monday to keep track of the inches lost. I just started that about three weeks ago. I know when I mess up it will reflect on the scale in about two days. So, weighing every day helps keep me in check.

I must admit, I am one that weighs in daily. Sometimes a few times in a very short time. Most of the time I am not stressed about my weigh ins. I do use it as a tool, just like so many other tools available here on SparkPeople that are wonderful.

I agree with SHERRING08 "It's not the lower numbers that make it all worthwhile"! I know that in my journey it's not so much about the numbers on the scale moving up or down, but the feeling that I get when I accomplish more fitness minutes. Like today, I was able to do 200 modified pushups, I even startled myself when I finished, and I felt great knowing I had done that! Weigh ins don't bother me, I don't do daily or weekly weigh ins, I usually do a monthly weigh in, if the scale hasn't moved as much as I had hoped it to, that's okay, it just makes me more determined to keep up my motivation and continue with this healthy life style change that I am on, and enjoy the small victories in between weigh ins.

Joy overflows in my life!

I have inner peace!!

I have the power to change myself!

I have faith in my ability to succeed!

I'm down, I'm down !!!! Not sure how much is attributable to this challenge - hasn't been going that long - but I do know I'm more aware that this is all on my shoulders, i.e., I make the decisions that contribute to or detract from my success. . .and I have made some changes in both nutrition and activity since starting this challenge.

Thank you so much for suggesting this challenge AND for emailing me so I didn't/don't miss it.

I first read this Wednesday, which was a disappointing weigh-in day. I was so bummed that I wouldn't write anything on here! Ha, ha. It was one of those where I expected a weight-loss, or at the very least, staying even. Instead I gained 1-1/2 pounds. I don't know why but I'm sure there was a good reason. But as I read the article, I realized that my focus really IS the weight-loss, not the healthy lifestyle. I took a recommended quiz and that bummed me even further as I realized that the things I am learning are great as long as I am losing weight but I have not made them a permanent part of my life. Someone wrote earlier that they were going to begin again, working on implementing one thing at a time. I thing that is where I need to be right now so that my thinking is truly changing.

Darling_Nicki - same problem here...sometimes I gain more than I lost at last weigh-in.
That's why I started measuring once a month - seeing the inches fall away (not as fast as it sounds) makes it easier not to stress over the scale results.

I try not to let the scale stress me out, but it usually does. I've been only weighing myself once a week, and unfortunately I haven't seen any progress. Occasionally I'll be down a pound only to get it back by my next weigh in. I think I need to focus more on exercising and maybe tracking my food.

I don't stress out over the number on the scale as much as I used to. SP has helped me realize that there could be a number of reasons why the scale moves up and down so much. So now if it's up a couple of pounds, I look back to try to find out why. Have I been slacking on exercise, not downing enough water, eaten too many processed foods with their high sodium content???

While I'm not always happy with the scale, it's easier to manage now.

I usually weigh once a week, but do occasioanlly weigh several times during the week if I'm curious. I find the less I weigh myself the happier I am. So much influences the scale that it is disappointing if I don't see a decrease. I have learned to mark my weight loss success by non-scale victories. My scale has not been moving much lately but I am into a size smaller jeans so something is working right!!

The scale is a tricky thing for me, I only weigh in on Sundays and to date I've been fortunate enough that I've recorded losses, small losses but losses all the same. The number means more to me than I want it to and I'm working on that. I have been told I need to lose weight my whole life, from the time I was 9 or 10 and complaining about pain in my knees even at that young age our family doctor would just say "put her on a bit of a diet." Since starting this journey I've pulled out old family albums and you know what...I was thin at that age!! Honestly I don't think I needed to lose weight until my late teens when I look at all the pictures. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my knees at 19, so my childhood doctor was just an idiot, but even at that early age I was already learning to focus on the number, not on how fit I was, how active I was...only thing that mattered was the number on the scale. So when I started this journey on June 17, only a few weeks ago, I told myself I will weigh in once a week...I saw that Sparkpeople motivational that says "The scale will not define me" and I printed it out and I have a copy in my bathroom where the scale is. Am I happy when that number is down? I sure am, but I am happier that my clothes are falling off and I have to use safety pins to keep my pants up, that I had to go buy new underwear because it was falling down to my knees while I work, that I can wear a bra all day and not be in agony, that I've gone from a 33 minute mile to under 20...the list goes on! Those are the important measures of what I'm doing....what about the fact that I am happy again, that life holds meaning again...those mean way more than a number on a scale. So today I say, "scale tell me whatever you want, but you DO NOT define me!" And it certainly will not deter me from this journey!

The scale and I have had a definite love/hate relationship over the years. Of course, I absolutely loved it when it was telling me I was nearing my goal weight. Then I grew to hate it when I stepped on it and it had the audacity to tell me I had gained about 11 lbs and then another 8 lbs and then another 10 lbs over the course of 9 months. Lately, I try to weigh only once a week. I have been frustrated about the lack of downward movement in the numbers. However, I try to remind myself of all the good choices I am making, and I know the number will eventually decrease. I also know that the number on the scale is not the only thing that defines my progress.

Work hard; don't hardly work!

Actually got on the scale today and saw an increase...I then put on my wedding ring....tight (!!!) I was retaining water from my meal the night before. It wasn't a huge weight thing...it is water weight....sometimes we just gotta put things in perspective.

I actually have to thank joining the Bikini Warriors Challenge group this summer for helping me out! I used to weight myself every day to every 2 days and DREAD it as I was staying in the same area fluctuating for 2 months. Then I joined the challenge and decided that if I have to enter my weight every week on the site I would only weigh myself once a week. Now not so bad picked one day and stuck with it for 8 weeks and actually like weighing in especially seeing results. (Now if I could finally start tracking food! Lose interest everytime I start! Any suggestions? PM me)

I try to only weigh-in on the same day and the same time each week. It does make me feel good to see a drop in weight, but other things such as getting into an old pair of pants, or just simply staying within my caloric intake, can also boost me. If I see a major increase, it gives me a bit more motivation to try harder.

CHODGE I agree with what you said re: tracking. I want to get to the point that I'm NOT doing it. I spend so much time planning, tracking and on the message boards, that sometimes i feel as if I'm obsessing about losing weight etc.

when I was normal weight (not that long ago) I never wrote and tracked and blogged about weight. I hope to someday be back to that point.

I get frustrated by the numbers. I know they are not that important and not an indicator of my strength or physique. Just doing the going for the gold challenge I have gotten stronger this week! In the past 6months I've needed several skirts, shorts, and pants taken in at the waist. I am making progress, but that damned scale shows the same number EVERY TIME. Okay maybe not every time, but it sure seems like it stays the same.

I was on a program that had me weighing in everyday. That was too much. Now I weigh once a week sometimes less. I want that number to be lower, but slowly I'm coming to terms with it being the same. I've seen some amazing progress pics of other sparkers who are getting stronger, but staying the same weight. That's pretty encouraging.

I may go back this past month and see what my calorie deficit was, but I don't really want to track everything all the time. I feel like (for me) it's counterproductive spending so much time on her logging things. I know how to eat and how to exercise and I don't really need a scale or a computer to tell me what my body can tell me on it's own.

"It's not a lower number that makes it all worthwhile..."

That phrase really sums it up for me! I can recall so many victories (I write them down), having nothing to do with the scale, that have propelled me onward: when I first hit 5 minutes on the elliptical machine (two days in a row!), when I "forgot" that I hadn't had a soda all day; when I first realized "the pouch" was smaller, when I fit back into my old jeans! emoticon

Some days I weigh in, some days I don't. No regular schedule...no major big deal. Just a tool...really liked the mechanic example!!

I weigh in daily but it is not because I stress over the number. The reason I do it is because my medication I am on. I need to make sure that I don't have any drastic weight gain or weight loss (yeah, I wish!). I found when I did it once a week my weight fluctuated so much I would be able to acurrately find out if I did. Anyway, I weigh daily and average it out over a week or two. Works for me.

I am glad this did come up though because before when I didn't think of this as a lifestyle change, but a diet I was obsessed with the number on the scale.

Actually I prefer measurement but I have to find my measuring tape. As soon as I find it I am going to start doing that. That I found MUCH more accurate. Especially when you are gaining muscle and since I just started getting active again, I am going to have weight gain from muscle.

While I still weigh each Sunday. . and sneak in a visit to the scale Wed/Thu which I DO NOT record. . I decided some time ago to include body measuring once monthly. And a good thing I did cause, while the scale fluctuates up and down, the measuring is finally reflecting fewer inches in a couple of places. So, I'm not reach my weight goals but the mid-section is SLOWLY shrinking 8-))

I began creating the spreadsheet described in this article - went back several months - and think this may be helpful information in my weight loss efforts going forward.

Glad I joined this challenge!!

My scale only goes so high and I haven't been able to use it in a long time. I weigh in every couple of weeks. The number on the scale doesn't bother me too much because I usually have a good idea how well I have done. I was pleasantly surprised during one weigh in when I lost 8 lbs When I was hoping for 4-6lbs loss. I know how well I stick or don't stick to my program and yeah I'm disappointed sometimes but not unexpectedly so. I don't let the number on the scale set off a binge or just give up.

I weigh in frequently, but not as much as I used to. I used to weigh myself every day. I don't let it affect my mood. I was up this morning but that just tells me to get sck on track and start drinking more water.

I LOVE this from the article--

Be clear with yourself about what that number on the scale really means. That number on the scale only tells you how much you weigh at that moment. It tells you absolutely nothing about what kind of person you are; what life has in store for you; whether or not you’ll ever look the way you want to look or feel the way you want to feel; or how other people see or think about you.

I am a recovering over-weigher. Like several times a day, every time I peed, kind of weigher. I'm not sure why it clicked for me but one day it just did. That it didn't matter what the scale said. Even if it was a pound more, a pound less, my outward appearance wasn't going to change. What mattered is what I thought, how I felt, how I carried myself, etc. Since then, as opposed to the latest fad diet which many times produced impressive results...but amazingly enough didn't make me FEEL one bit different, it's been about getting healthy, feeling good, a lifestyle change.

I probably still weigh every other day or so...and the results are much slower now then they were on, say, HCG, but I feel much better. Never (ok, rarely) decide a Big Mac is the answer when the scale goes up a lb. Instead I celebrate the teeny, tiny, rare victories...and take the occasional extra lb or no loss kind of setback all in stride. Because, like I said, really nobody else is going to notice that extra half a lb. What matters is what I do with it and how I react to it!

It amazes me how much we're all alike!

I know people who weigh themselves everyday and I try to convince them not to. As females, our wonderful (ha ha) hormones cause weight fluctuations. Too much sodium will hold water the next day (Chinese anyone?). Not drinking enough water, drinking too much water, the weather, the stars in alignment...ANYTHING can affect our weight from day to day! I'm tempted to get rid of the scale, but I hop on it periodically. I used to do a weekly weigh-in at WW, but now I just check here and there (first thing in the morning, naked, before a shower) and if it goes down one day, I hurry up and track it before the scale changes it's mind and adds two pounds! :)

Try not to let the number define you. You are leading a healthier lifestyle. You are probably toning up and feeling better. You can read a number on a scale for that. The number is helpful, but please don't let that be the only thing you use to define your self-worth! This is a journey and we're all on the long road together.

Hang in there ladies!!! We can do this!!!!!!

Usually I am fine with the weigh in. The exception is when I am extremely stressed in other areas. This week, work has been horrible, when I stepped on the scale yesterday I lost a pound and my thoughts since then were "If this is going to go this slow, its not worth it...it's going to take forever." I really had to struggle not to stop at the McDonald's drive through on the way home for a Big Mac. Luckily God bailed me out with a storm - I didn't want to stop in the rain.

J0Ette that's interesting about PB. I love the stuff and was so proud of myself for eating ONLY as much as I'd programmed in ahead of time as a snack. I was w/in my calories and this week my weigh in was a flat line. I had the PB almost every night as a planned bedtime snack. I figured a calorie was a calorie. MAYBE NOT in my case. I think I'll back off the PB this week and see what happens.

I am the type that steps on the scale everyday. I do use it as a tool.. Like that "rachet" (loved that btw) I learn so much about myself with weighing in everyday. One recent discovery was how peanut butter affects my weight. Can't have even 1 T more than 2 days in a row, even if I am in my calorie range, the scale will go up. So I have used that information in my meal planning,

I am very happy to see that most of you have already put the scale in its place. For those that do struggle with the scale, it will get easier. Just like everything else we do.. Babysteps lead to a lifetime journey of a healthier you!

I do weigh myself daily, but right now it's mainly out of curiosity so I'm not stressing about the number.

I've decided to try a different approach to "weight loss" this time around. I've set one single goal for myself instead of trying to set many and change everything at once (something that has never worked for me in the past!). I do plan on adding in other goals toward living a healthier lifestyle, and as I do, I expect that the number on the scale will reflect the changes that I make, but for now, I'm keeping it simple, trying to have success in one thing which I believe will become a building block for success in the next thing, and the next thing after that!

I find myself just the opposite. If I don't weigh in it's like a switch is flipped in my brain so that I am "blind" to my weight. Then, I don't have to eat well or exercise, because I'm not overweight, I have no idea how much I weigh! When I do weigh in in the morning I realize, hmm, still almost as fat as you were yesterday/last week/whenever, better keep sticking to the exercising and eating well.

I just get so frustrated when I expect a good loss and it doesn't show up. Sometimes I know what happened as far as overeating or "under moving", but sometimes I'm at a loss. But then I HAVE to tell me that it will show up on the scale on it's own good time. Probably the next week. But I'd sure like to see a steady loss like a slope instead of a staircase!!

I admit to being guilty on all counts. If I have a good number, it makes my day. A bad number and I'm mad and sad and I just want to say "the heck with this! Bring on the cheesecake" I'm working on this, but today was weigh in day, I maintained, and I'm not a happy camper. But I won't go and fork a cheesecake!! LOL
(I also have come to realize I lose in stair steps. Lose 1 week, maintain the next (or small loss), good loss the next week, followed by another maintain. Evidently my body fat doesn't know that I weigh in weekly not every other week!!!

I chose to kick the scale to the curb a couple of years ago. It was just one more obsession that drove me crazy. I only check about 1x per month, unless I've been on a food fest or after vacation. My size and definition are my guide. It is very freeing, and I continue to notice changes.

Dear Lord, set my sights on You and Your great attributes. Help me to live in Your presence, dependent on Your guidance each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I weigh in on Mondays and that is it. I don't step on the scale everyday. I know how my clothes are fitting me better and I feel better.

I love SparkPeople

Today is the first day of the rest of my life.

Right now I hate my scales! After reading Weigh In Stress You out? I remembered that I am doing this to live a Healthy life. The scales had nothing to do with how I ate and didn't exercise in the past. It will be my reminder that change doesn't come over night. How I feel and the changes in my energy, exercise, and foods I am eating are more important then numbers I see. I am tracking my food and exercise and will see where I need to make changes.

I also use the scale on a daily basis. I know that small changes +/- are inevitable, but I look for bigger changes that signal I'm off course on my nutrition tracking. A negative is also a real boost to my self-image as I progress toward my goal weight.

I agree with GarellK. I weight myself everyday. It's another tool in our arsenal and we should use that tool in the best way for each of us. A guy I work with likes to this of tools (of any sort, so this really applies to anything):
"It's just a ratchet, it's a great ratchet and it will do what you need it to do, but if you don't know how to fix the car it's not going to fix it for you. You have to use the tool, don't let the tool use you." emoticon

I'm not at all worried about a "diet" right now lol. I've gotten over a 2 month illness during which I lost 52 pounds so I'm off to a good start lol. Also just the fact that I'm eating regular meals is a reason to celebrate ^_^ I am working hard not to start over eating again though.

I love reading everyone's strategies, feelings/thoughts. I think I fluctuate back and forth. I weigh in sometimes obsessively but I am right now, just weighing in on Saturdays.

I am trying hard to make better choices and live a healthier lifestyle instead of worrying about a "diet". I just want to clarify -- that anyone that is on a special diet - that's great - whatever works best for each individual, I'm just trying to eat healthier and live healthier - if I try to go on a special "diet" then I usually fail.

I have to admit that I don't let the scale bother me usually. I weigh in each week for a challenge that I'm on. Otherwise the only time I weigh is when I feel like I might have gained. Of course, if I had been more concerned earlier in my life....I might not be where I am today. So, moderation.....in whatever I do....(working on it)

I am just getting into this challenge now ^_^

This was a great article, I know in the past I have done the weekly weigh-in or daily weigh-in and always been so happy or so disappointed, more often disappointed lol. This time around I don't weigh myself on a regular basis at all. Every week or 2 on a random day I weigh myself and see how I'm doing.

I think this works better for me so I don't weigh myself one day and because of a loss I'll treat myself and then I just gain it back the next day lol.

I usually weigh in a couple of times a week, and it doesn't bother me too much although I would rather see a loss than a gain.

The SP weight graph, however, is a great motivator. It shows me that I am on track and even a little under my goal.

I try to weigh once a week and am not worried about what the scale would read. The female will gain and lose water all day, so I only go by the week. So much easier.

I do weigh-in daily, but that is what made me become more aware of my body and how my weight fluctuates. When I was taking my weight once a week, I was looking at only one point in time and it may have been after a few days of intense exercise and calories burning whereby my muscles would retain water as they heal and it could add upwards of 3lbs to the scale. By weighing daily, I became more aware of the fluctuations in my weight and soon realized that it was not fat increasing the scale, it was more than likely inflammation or water retention as my muscles heal. For example, I always take Sunday as my day of rest so that my muscles heal. And then I do not exercise again until Monday night when I host a Tai Chi Fit Club at my Church. Every week when I way in on Tuesday morning, I found that I would lose my weight once again and it was because I allowed my muscles time to heal. Before realizing this, I was one frustrated person. And even if you weigh-in only once a week, make sure it is at the same time every morning and buck naked so you get the most realistic number on that scale.

I am just entering this challenge. Great links!
I am not focusing on the weight/number on the scale issue at this point in my journey. The number is not my big concern. I think and talk and read about healthy lifestyles. I remind myself what my goal is daily. I wish we could drop or change the term diet. I just want to build habits that lead to a healthy life. I know those habits will lead to a healthier body- blood pressure, cholesterol level and weight. I weigh myself and treat it like everything else- one piece of data about this journey.
I always tell myself to remember; do the work and all of the measures will change.
Thanks for the challenge! emoticon

This article reminds me of another I read...where they said that if the number on the scale was the only reason I was choosing to lose weight than I would could just remove a limb and the scale would show a decrease and the victory would be won.
Of course we all know that is crazy...but I personally have to go back to that little thought when the scale doesn't move but I have been more active of I lifted more...or whatever the reason may be.
Yes I am trying to lose weight...but as I continue it is not the number one reason I stay...it is a side effect to the other important things I am doing. A much needed side effect...LOL!!!
I hope everyone is enjoying their week...it is hump day!

I must confess I am often a slave to my scale. If the scale is being nice I feel great. If the scale shows a gain (or even a stall) it effects my mood all day. My weekly ritual, now that I think about it is really kinda sad, I stand in front of that dreaded scale saying (almost out loud) please be kind, please be kind, please be kind. And then I step on . . . the entire world seems to hold its breath for the few seconds it takes for the digital reading to appear. And then my reaction exhilaration or defeat.

This challenge has given me an idea. I am going to put together a collage of all the great things I have gained from this journey to health and hang it above my scale. Instead of the weekly OH NO, HOPE ITS OK, I am going to step on that scale while focusing on all I have accomplished. Woo Hoo I will do this!!!

Do you dread stepping on the scale? Does it creae a whole mess of negative feelings? This challenge is for you! (It doesn't have to be that way)

This challenge is going to build on the "I" we just discussed. Taking the "I" empowerment and take control away from the scale. This puts the scale back into its proper place. It becomes just another tool we use to create the healthier lifestyle we are working (and succeeding) to create!
