I was the exercise QUEEN yesterday. Did strength training, 1 mile WATP, rode my stationary bike for 20 min., and went on a 3 mile hike...all before noon! When I got home, I finished putting together a 15 bean soup, had lunch, and went on ANOTHER 3 mile hike!

Altogether, I ended up with 7 miles and 15,869 steps. Inexplicably, I had a nearly sleepless night last night though, so I'm really dragging today...and have weekend company coming tomorrow!

This was kind of a bad week, emotionally speaking, but I only skipped 1 day of exercises. It really does help you feel better if you can force yourself to get up and move! I was up and down weightwise all week, too. But today, I seem to be coming back on track. I'm down a couple of pounds from last week--although last week I had gained, but oh well, I'm going in the right direction, anyway! emoticon

Hi Linda! Although I know this is NOT what you want to hear, I'd be thrilled if I could just lose 2 lbs per month! Well, ok...maybe not thrilled (I'd be thrilled if I could lose 10 lbs per month, lol), but happy that I was making progress! I wish I had some advice for you to help get your loss moving in the direction you'd like, but I'm not having much luck at all getting the scale to move. I just have to be happy with the fact that I'm getting myself to move, hehe.

Speaking of moving, I went on a two hour hike yesterday, on a rough and rugged, hilly path over VERY uneven terrain. I got my 10,000 steps in again (for only the third time), but that darn pedometer seems perfectly happy to ignore all the climbing, balancing, and struggling I face on these hikes, and only gives me credit for steps. Fortunately, SP fitness tracker understands - while that stubborn pedometer only gave me a 360 cal. deficit for all that hiking, SP gave me credit for over 1,000 calories burned. Gotta love Spark People!

I also did limited strength training yesterday, a little upper body work, biceps/triceps primarily, before heading out for my "nature hike".

I think I've hit the dreaded plateau. I want to lose 8 pounds by the end of the month, which is what I've been doing, but here it is, almost the middle of the month, and I've only lost two! My Easter weekend falling off the wagon didn't help either. Yesterday, I didn't start up Richard until after 8 p.m.! I don't like to exercise that close to bedtime, but I procrastinated all day, so I had to. Any plateau-busting tips out there?

On Easter Sunday, I found that the "Easter Bunny" had been here and left a giant chocolate bar, CACAO RESERVE by Hershey's. I ate one square, which was 1/4 of a serving. Stayed under calories all day (unintentionally, but still..). After I had gone to bed for the night, I just couldn't get that darn chocolate out of my head. Now, let us not forget that one of my "rules to live by" is NO eating after 8pm. At about 10pm I ate 4 squares of that chocolate, for a total of a serving and a quarter...AFTER 10pm! So that was two of my rules broken in a single deed, eating after the cut-off, and impulsive eating. Not to mention that I got a VERY large percentage of my calories for the day from chocolate. BUT, I did not go over my calorie range, and I did not trigger a binge! (Well, after I'd eaten four squares of chocolate, I mean) Got right back on track yesterday, although I did eat two more squares of that MOST DELICIOUS chocolate. I actually got a "chocolate high" too, was all euphoric and giggly, just from eating that MARVELOUS chocolate. I think I could become a serious addict, if I had more than half a bar left, hehe.

I got my 10,000 steps in yesterday, hiking and walking outside. Today is absolutely beautiful, so I expect I'll do close to the same thing. I also plan to add an interval workout with dumbbells today, to get some cardio *other* than hiking, as well as some strength training.

Good for you for going back to Richard after a slight slip...that should get you back on the right track, pronto! Congratulations for getting right back into the program!

I was bad yesterday, we had company, so didn't get any exercise done. Plus I went way over my calories and paid for it with two pounds gained. Sigh...

But I exercised for 55 minutes with Richard today, so maybe that will help.

Happy Easter everyone!

Yesterday (4/11) I did upper body strength exercises and 15 min of cardio in the morning, before heading out for a nice, long hike in the afternoon.

Today (Easter) I hope to hike more, and am just heading down to do some morning cardio and lower body strength training.

I did WATP 5K With a Twist yesterday morning,

***EDIT***
I did ONE mile only of the 5K video, not the whole thing...

then went on a nice walk/hike on a LEVEL surface (was still a little sore from the hike we took up a hill on Wednesday). And get this....I FINALLY racked up over 10,000 steps on my pedometer!! That's been my goal, but as my program was slipping away, I felt like I was too, lol. I just didn't have the energy or drive to push for those last few steps, but yesterday they just appeared...just like magic!

LindaRuth - I'm sorry to hear about your "man troubles" (that phrase is almost redundant - "man troubles", lol). Seriously, I'm so proud of you for keeping your menu plan on the right track. Speaking from my own experience, that's usually the FIRST thing to go.

LOL, I was involved in a very rough relationship with a man a couple of years back, and whenever we had a fallout, I headed straight for the chocolate...but boy did I ever get good at kickboxing!!! If I could have had your resolve to stick with the nutritional plan, and you could have my resolve to kick those negative feelings away, think how much sooner we'd both be better...all 'round!

But you're staying on the right track, for me, the food was always the hardest thing to control when my emotional state was messed up. GOOD FOR YOU for thinking about yourself. Don't worry about how long you spend exercising...there are a lot of 10 minute workouts right here on SP that you could try. Like you said, just do *something*, and you'll feel so much better! That's something I can guarantee!

Sheri - Funny you should say that about energy being wasted on the young, as Wednesday while I was out hiking with Chazz (my significant other/roommate) on "the Mound" (a hill turned into a nature park...or something like that), we saw where the boyscouts had been doing some stuff, and all I could think was how horrible it would be to be the leader of a group of kids while trying to trudge my way up that hill....huffing and panting and wheezing.
emoticon
I can't help but remember how much I used to LOVE physical challenges, and wonder what happened to all that energy, stamina, and flexibility :( I keep trying to figure out some way to make my workouts seem more like playing :D

I think energy is wasted on the young lol. I think the older we get, the more energy God should give us! The youth don't want it because a good majority of them sit in front of TV's, playstations, Xboxes etc. Why not give us that energy! lol

Kind of fell off track due to man trouble. Got dumped by my boyfriend over the weekend, so Monday, I gave in to depression and didn't do exercising. The good news is, I didn't go off the menu plan. But how could I let a man sabotage my new lifestyle? After kicking myself for being dumb, I started the 21 day habit again. Day 1 was Tuesday, April 7 -- went back to Richard, the only man other than my father who never let me down, did 45 minutes of cardio and again on Wednesday. Today will be Day 3. I'm determined to do SOMETHING, even if only 15 minutes of something, every day for 21 days.

Thanks Sheri! I'm feeling newly motivated again. I went hiking yesterday and Tuesday, and really got a workout from yesterday's hike! We (my S.O. and I) hiked on a hill, "The Mound" as we call it in town. We'd done that same hike in previous years, but neither of us remembered it being so HARD to get up that hill! LOL...obviously, we've both gotten seriously out of shape! But the main thing is, we got over an hour of walking/hiking both days!

I also did a couple WATP DVDs, one included some strength training/resistance, so I feel like I'm off to a good start again.

OK, I actually went and reset all my SparkPeople goals, so it's like I'm starting over...but without quitting in between (this time). I just couldn't get a handle on things, I felt like I was exercising constantly but not making any progress, so I started over.

Yesterday I just did 30 min of cardio, although I was supposed to have ST as well. I skipped that because I put it off too long to be able to get it done and get cleaned up before I was expecting company.

Today (4/7) I walked and hiked for 1 1/2 hour total. 30 min in the morning, and the rest in the afternoon. The afternoon walk was 2 1/2 miles, took an hour (there was some "sight seeing" involved), and according to my pedometer 48 min of that was aerobic. Unfortunately, I only racked up 75000 steps, 50 of which were aerobic.

I took today off, but yesterday I cleaned my entire apartment...vacuum, dust, mop, dishes, garbage, etc. Felt really good to get it all done. Poor fitness tracker had a meltdown when I told it how much time I'd spent Heavy Cleaning lol Oh well, it will make up for some days this week, no doubt.

Great job on the walking, Sheri!

I've decided to take the weekend off - no exercise either day. I've been doing cardio 6 or 7 days a week, and ST 3 days, and haven't lost a single inch or pound. My body hurts all the time now, so I think it's time to give it some rest and recovery. I'm going to burn out quick if I don't, lol.

This is so typical of me...start slow, but within a week I think I have to be able to push myself to extremes. I really need to work on changing that way of thinking.

Well, I did a lot of walking and for 10 weeks I've been doing walking but not speedy or very much because of my back spasm, but I'm getting stronger, despite the pain and the pain pills are going into me far less than before...maybe 1-2 times per week as opposed to 1-2 a day.

Lindaruth - I love Richard, even though I can't keep up with his moves most of the time. I still listen to him while I do my ST, and sometimes join him in dancing between my exercises...makes it kinda like circuit training...for the oldies ;) I envy you for getting outside to walk, I've been wussing out regularly since the weather decided to stay below freezing until forever! But I remain in training for the nicer weather days, heh heh.

Biblechick - Way to go, get out there and dance with Linda!

Sheri - You are doing an awesome job! One day off, can't ask for anything more than that!

Yesterday I just split the 5K with a twist into 5 segments, doing two in the morning and one before each meal. Today I have ST and cardio, so I'll get at least an hour in.

I did 30 min of pilates (beginners, 50+) this morning, then 30 min of strength and another ten of stretching. This afternoon I did Leslie Sansone's 5K With a Twist - and what a workout THAT was!

I got a fair bit of walking in today because I had a meeting at the hospital to go to. It requires a lot of walking INSIDE the hospital let alone walking to the bus etc. Group was good but my parents are really bugging me so I sent them an email letter of my boundaries and their consequences. VERY LONG STORY!

Linda - Way to go with the exercise! That's awesome!

I had a lofty goal (for me) set for myself yesterday, but blew my knees out before I was finished, so I ended up 10 min shy of my goal of 120 minutes. That wasn't 120 consecutive min, just 120 minutes accumulated. My plan was 30 cardio and 30 strength in the morning, then repeated in the afternoon. I did everything I'd planned until I messed up my knees doing squats and lunges in the afternoon, and could only handle 20 min of cardio, rather than the 30 I'd planned on.

BUT, the important thing is, I got my 30 min AM cardio in, yesterday and today as well.

If either of you is interested in some quick little "mini walks" and desk workouts, check on my Spark Page where I posted the links.

Since I re-started on Sunday, I've been able to do my goal of 30 minutes of exercise every day - today was Day 5. (I could have sworn I've posted since Sunday, but I don't see any.) but anyway, tomorrow is Day 6!

Mini goals:

LOL Sheri, I know what you mean. My 55 cm ball is getting a little bit on the soft side, but I just don't feel like pumping it up again. I suppose it might make the exercises a bit easier if I did though...yathink?

Linda, I never want to exercise in front of anyone either, so congrats for just getting up there to do it on Sunday! WTG on the other days!

Yesterday was my recovery day (I only "pledged" to do my morning cardio 6 days a week). Today I got my 30 min cardio in JUST by noon again. Boy, good thing I've got a deadline, or I might never have done it! Off topic a little, but still related, I also did 20 minutes of strength training today. That's not a lot of strength training, but it's the most I've done since I started back again on the 15th.

I went out of town for the weekend and didn't get Friday and Saturday's done. So I started again on Sunday, my new Day 1 - 30 minutes aerobics and today, Day 2, 37 minutes aerobics.(I took my video to my friend's house and could have done it, but felt embarassed to do it in front of her -- but Sunday, I thought, oh what the heck -- and her neice got up and exercised with me! So next time, I won't be embarassed!)

You're both right. We all need to find our own programs, something that works for us, regardless of what others are doing; and something we can stick with for the long haul. But we also need encouragement and support, which is why we are here. If we didn't need or want the support of others, including their suggestions, we wouldn't be on a support site emoticon The best thing we can do is listen to the advice and suggestions offered to us, take what we can use in our particular situation, and leave the rest.

Oh, by the way, Day 4 and I got to have a FABULOUS cross country hike for 30 min cardio before noon, and another 30 min after noon :D

That's right...it needs to be balanced around our own needs, limitations, doctor's suggestions etc., because other people may have no clue as to what it's like to live in our shoes. Those that say just get out and do it, I'd love for them to spend a week in mine and see how long they last lol. Take care.

Sheri - Oh, you're definitely right about not being the only one who feels that way! I had the same feeling (though not for as good a reason as yours are) back when I was using eDiets. I got up for work at 5 AM, and just wasn't motivated enough to get up at 4 so I'd be able to work out and shower before work. Although the fitness trainer just encouraged me to find a time that works for me and stick with it, a lot of the members of various teams did their best to point out that "If I was really serious" about wanting this, I could surely make the effort to get up an hour earlier to work out. I not only find that kind of attitude offensive, it's not very helpful either. I mean, we are trying to change our lifestyle, and find patterns that work for US...it shouldn't have to be about following someone else's patterns!

I realize that and it was not directed at you, but a lot of people, even Coaches and experts, forget that not everybody has excellent health and can do these things and I just wanted to point that out because I am sure I am not the only who feels that way. :)

Sheri - The whole premise of this "challenge" is that you set your own goal. I submitted this challenge to two other teams I'm on as well, and the variety of the goals is great! Some people just want to remember to drink all their water, some want to stop eating at night, some want to walk at lunch, some want to just walk - ANY time. The point is, you select something that works for you and your lifestyle, and see if you can commit to doing that thing for 21 consecutive days. I just wanted to start being more faithful about getting some cardio in before noon, because it seems that I am FAR more likely to stay motivated for the rest of the day when I do - so I chose that as my personal goal. If you choose to join us on this adventure, YOU can choose whatever will work for you emoticon You may just want to stay within your calorie range, or get 8 hours of sleep, or even read a new article. Whatever works for you!

Here's my report. I can't remember if I posted yesterday's activity, but for Day 1 I did Leslie Sansone's Walk And Kick in the AM, for 30 minutes of exercise.
Day 2: Leslie again, 1 Mile Booster Walk. That only took 26 minutes, so I walked up and down my stairs for the last 4 minutes emoticon

It is a good idea, but it does not include all scenarios. I take a WHOPPING amount of medications and getting up in the morning is a chore. I get up, eat so my hypoglycemia doesn't go whacky, and go back to bed. By 2pm I'm okay and ready to get going. But most of these articles do not take into consideration the people who take heavy medications and they honestly CANNOT do things in the morning or as extreme as many. I have 30 medical condtions and take meds for all of them, so imagine.

That's a really good idea! Since I've started Spark, I've given up salt and wine, and have established the habit of planning my meals every day. I'm still not regular on my exercising, though. 21 days from today would be April 7, so I plan to do at least 15 minutes of some type of movement every day. My fitness charts are scheduled for 30 minutes of cardio on M,W,F, and ST for T and Th. So if I do that, I will "count" that as my movement for the day. But if I don't make that, I will at least do some form of movement for 15 minutes everyday.

I submitted this challenge on the community message board www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/messageb
oa
rd.asp?imboard=8&imparent=14300901
but wanted to offer it directly to my teams as well.

Many experts assert that it takes 21 days for something to become a habit. That is the amount of time it takes the conscious mind to imprint the thought into the subconscious mind making it a habit. My own assertion is that we can make our diet/fitness a habit by finding a program that is working for us, and sticking with it, unwavering, for 21 consecutive days. For instance, if getting up in the morning and exercising seems to work for your lifestyle, then commit to doing it for 21 days (with scheduled breaks) and see if you can turn this "notion" into a "habit". Likewise, the habit you're looking to form might be eating healthy, like following the SP guidelines faithfully. See if you can do it for 21 days straight and make it a part of your lifestyle. Or you could do both, this challenge is just about maintaining whichever part of the program you want to focus on making a part of your everyday life.

This is how it works. You choose. Pick a habit you want to form, something you're having trouble with. Maybe it's getting your exercise in every day. Maybe it's drinking your water, or staying within your calorie range. Maybe you want to stop eating at night, or stop drinking soda, or anything at all. Pick a habit you want to form, and commit to sticking with that for 21 days. Just make it quantifiable, something you can actually track; rather than just saying you want to eat better or exercise more, state HOW you want to eat better, or what you want to include in your exercises, etc.

Any takers?
