After reviewing worldwide evidence, U.S. researchers conclude eating processed red meats like bacon, sausage, hot dogs and deli meats is linked to a much higher risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Unprocessed red meats (beef, lamb and pork) do not pose the same risks. The Harvard School of Public Health researchers found that every 50 gram (1.8 oz) increase in daily intake of processed meat (about 1 or 2 slices of deli meat or 1 hot dog), was linked to a 42 percent higher risk of developing heart disease and a 19 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Most prior studies have not separately considered the health effects of eating unprocessed red versus processed meats. The results of this study suggest people should consider which types of meat they are eating in order to lower their risk of heart attack and diabetes.
