Another tip for MapMyRun... if you're running on roads, be sure to click on the "follow roads" option (there are also loop options, out & back etc). This is MUCH easier as you can just click a few spots to get your whole route. In the beginning I was using the "straight line" (default) option and having to mark every corner...

Not dense at all....you probably have something better! I'm the dense one. Honestly....I don't even know what a Garmin is or what it looks like! How dense is that? LOL!
This spring, I dumped my HRM. It was good in the beginning to track my HR zones, etc.... After a while, I just seemed to know. I follow a lot on perceived exertion and just try to stay in tune to my body. I think at my age, this dictates more of what I do than anything. If I have too much information, I fear I'll push myself over the limit. LOL!

Okay, call me dense, but I have used maymyrun for a long time now but never thought of mentally marking the miles so I can check them against my watch. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

Thanks.... And good luck with the mapymyrun.com site. Use the new Beta option when it asks you. Much better. It's a bit sensitive to the touch, but you'll get the hang of it with practice. The mileage adds up as you trace your route in the upper right hand corner. You can click anywhere you want to make a marker as you view what mile you are on. Hope that makes sense.
Thanks Teniswhiz - I will check out mapmyrun.com. I have looked at a few online tools (like SP's route map tool, and dailymile.com) but a lot won't show you KM/mile markers after you have saved the map, which is a problem. Thanks for the advice as well, I will be doing my first long run (11k) Saturday! Good luck to you on Sunday!!!

I don't own any fancy equipment either and frankly, don't even care about it. Gets too high tech for me! But some people love it and nothing wrong with that. But for us plain folk....and it still is a little bit "techy", I go to:
...map out my run course and see where my "markers" are and check my watch.
For my first marathon, my main focus is on just finishing. But of course, there is that hopeful time frame still stuck in my head & heart. I tell myself that is going on the back burner....and it is going to be what it is.
Long Distance Runs become VITAL at this level and that has been my main focus for my first half coming up this Sunday. A little longer each weekend....
Good luck in your first half and training.... Sounds to me like you are on the right track!
So, for the first time ever, I'm actually following a "real" training plan, with slow runs and tempo runs and long runs, to try to ramp up for my first Half. For example, today was a tempo run: I was to warm-up 1.5k at a slow pace (6:30 for me), then 5k at 5:39 pace for the "tempo" part - this is faster than my most recent 10k race pace - then another 1.5k to cool down slowly. I don't have a Garmin or GPS watch or anything fancy which will tell me my pace, so I'm wondering if anyone has some tips on how to gauge my pace? Do you map the route ahead of time and mentally note where your km markers will be, and keep an eye on the watch to adjust? Is there another way???
