The sermon was about surprise but it got me thinking about finding the holiness in our own families.
Families vary in size and makeup and are oftem bombarded and challenged by good and harmful influences. What makes a family? We are realated by blood or marriage. Sometimes close and dear friemds are like family. What makes a family work?
We are a family through God, the Father of us all in Heaven. We invoke this at least once a week when saying the Our Father Prayer. I read that as a family we should “live in harmony and in prayer, which are the pledges of joy and union.” How do we do this? We obey God’s word for us. We follow the golden rule, show appreciation and focus on our love of God and apply that to the people he created that are in our lives.
Will we do this all the time- of course not! We are imperfect. We make mistakes, we misunderstand. We all have different talents and gifts and sometimes they don’t mesh. We argue, fight, get angry and perhaps even become violent with one another. The way to fixthis is by going back to God’s will for us. To be humble about our shortcomings and ask God to “forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who tresspess against us”. A powerful statement. Forgiving is something that God asks of us. Forgimess is necessary to live in harmony. Sometiems obedience is difficult but it was demonstrated by Mary and Joseph in how they trusted God. Also how Jesus obeyed God in heaven and his earthly parents. God also gave us other role models of obedience and problems that arose when people were not obedients.
How often do you apply the example of the holy family to your own life and in who you are with the human family?
