A novena is a recitation of prayers for a set length of time. Usually a novena is said for nine days (novena is Latin for 9, I believe).

You have all heard about the Catholic prayer of the Rosary. As it says on the HolyRosary.org website, "The word Rosary means 'Crown of Roses'. Our Lady has revealed to several people that each time they say a Hail Mary they are giving her a beautiful rose and that each complete Rosary makes her a crown of roses."

Usually, when one prays a Rosary, it consists of 5 decades. Each decade is recited in honor of a mystery in Our Lord's Life and that of his Blessed Mother.

The "54-day Rosary Novena" is an uninterrupted series of Rosaries in honor of Our Lady. The Novena consists of five decades of the Rosary each day for twenty-seven days in petition; followed immediately after with five decades each day for twenty-seven days in thanksgiving, whether or not the requests have been granted.

The meditations vary from day to day. On the first day meditate on the Joyful Mysteries, on the second day the Light Mysteries, on the third day the Sorrowful Mysteries, on the fourth day meditate on the Glorious Mysteries, and so on throughout the fifty-four days.

This was the order of Jesus' life:

* Joyful - for His Birth and Early Life
* Luminous - for His Teaching ministry
* Sorrowful - for His Passion and Death
* Glorious - for His Resurrection and the Birth of the Church

Here is a link for how to pray the rosary:

DBEAU57 - yes! Have you read his encyclical on the rosary? I thought it was beautiful. And you're quite right, that is the order that he recommended for the mysteries with the mysteries of light added. With the 54-Day rosary novena, we say the mysteries continually in the order of Christ's life, so J, L, S, G.

BEULAH - glad you are joining us!

When St. John Paul II was pope, he recommended adding the Mysteries of Light to the rosary and to meditate on the mysteries in this order:

Joyful Mysteries on Monday and Saturday
Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesday and Friday
Glorious Mysteries on Wednesday and Sunday
Mysteries of Light on Thursday

That's lovely! I remember when I was training for a 5K, I would say Hail Marys to the rhythm of my footfalls on the pavement.

The Rosary is such a "living" prayer! Every time I say it, I learn something new. Even if I can only say a decade at a time, it leaves me with such peace...

I was just praying that, too. It is pretty fascinating to meditate on that isn't it? I love one of the suggested meditations for the 3rd Luminous Mysteries - the lame man brought to Jesus on a stretcher - the man whom Jesus heals his soul before He heals his body. Just meditating on the comment of Jesus on "What is easier, to say, 'your sins are forgiven', or to say, 'get up and walk'?"

Hmmm...makes me think.

No miscommunication, Gail Ann (sorry, is there an "e" at the end?). I'm sure there are as many ways to pray the rosary as there are people praying it. We just don't happen to usually pray it that way. Feel free to continue to do so.

I figured you were being self-deprecating about yourself. That is one problem with messaging like this (and emails) - there is no voice tone to gauge people's intent. I was simply teasing back.

I apologize for miscommunication about the Hail Holy Queen, I am accustomed to it before and after all the decades (decets).

I grew up 'breaking ice' with self deprecating humor and also finding that if I did it myself first, it was much easier to take than from someone else... :) (3 older brothers)

Thank you so much for the wealth of information! It is greatly and genuinely appreciated!

Oh, gosh, Gail Anne, no comments about your intelligence allowed, unless you are telling us that you think you are very smart! No putting down yourself please, as you are one of the Catholic Critters, and it's not allowed!

So, now that that is out of the way, you were wondering about the prayers we say with the Rosary Novena. I think Leah (CATHOLICCORGI) posted them in the Intentions thread, if you scroll down to the bottom of the thread.

We say almost the list that you have posted below, but with one small change: we do not say the Hail Holy Queen in the middle of the decades, but only at the end.

Here is a great link:
www.rosary-center.org/howto.htm

The link above also has great mysteries information - so you can learn some more about the luminous mysteries. I'm glad you know about those ones now. They are my favourite I think.

I think some people choose to pray the rosary without the Luminous Mysteries, and prefer the original rosary without them, but I guess it is up to the individual.

Usually saying the rosary on my own, and it not talked about at mass, what a shock to hear of Luminous Mysteries. I just got a quick education. Thank you..kinda sorta maybe, yes! Now, more reading to make sure I have the background correct for the mysteries. addendum ad editio typica huh? :) Perhaps you need to clue me in on what prayers you all are used to saying with your rosary.....

I try to say the Rosary every day, but I have not joined the 54 day novena, because Monday through Friday we pray the Rosary with volunteer students after school, and so we pray the mysteries in the order they are usually prayed (Joyful on Mondays and Sat., Sorrowful on Tuesdays and Fridays, Luminous on Thursday and Glorious on Wed. and Sundays)

I really had never heard of the 54 day novena until I saw it here on this site, and I understand that the mysteries are repeated consecutively. So this was just to let you know why I never join in.

Have a Blessed day!

What if we woke up tomorrow with only those things that we thanked God for today?

A novena is a recitation of prayers for a set length of time. Usually a novena is said for nine days (novena is Latin for 9, I believe).

I'm sure you have all heard about the Catholic prayer of the Rosary.

On a personal note, I used to mix up the order until I realized that it was the order of Jesus' life:

* Joyful - for His Birth and Early Life
* Luminous - for His Teaching ministry
* Sorrowful - for His Passion and Death
* Glorious - for His Resurrection and the Birth of the Church

Here is a link for how to pray the rosary:
