Hi! I do try to do this fast on Wednesdays and Fridays.... not always, but frequently.... especially after my visit to Medjugorje last year.
Our world is in such bad shape that we do need to pray for peace, an end to violence, respect for all life (especially the unborn) and a return to moral values. And as the Bible says: "This kind can only be driven out by prayer and fasting." (Matthew 17:21)
According to the teaching, this is fasting on only bread and water all day. Some say it should be plain integral bread, but personally, I have tried and find it too hard with just plain bread... by 5:00 or 6:00 pm I feel weak, no energy, and in a bad mood. (I guess I need more practice!!)
So I went to the Medjugorje site to look for more information on this fasting, and found there a recipe for Fasting Bread that is much more nutritious, and now I bake that bread myself and find I can usually fast all day using just that bread. At first the recipe gave me 2 large loaves, but I bought some mini-bread pans, and now from that recipe I make 6 mini loaves and freeze them. One loaf is enough for one day. I drink lots of water, and sometimes a cup of herbal tea with a bit of honey if I feel I need it.
Here is a link to the recipe: www.medjugorjemir.org/bread_for_fasting.ht
I think each person has to gradually adapt to fasting, if you're not accustomed to it. And I also think each person can adapt to what is best for them, taking into account health, age, etc.
I believe that the intention is the most important part, and as long as it is a sacrifice, Our Blessed Mother and Our Lord will be pleased and take our sacrifice for the conversion of sinners and peace for the world.
I personally find that the biggest part of the sacrifice of fasting is just not being able to eat anything else but bread!!
Hope this helps....
