It is interesting and I'm thinking (and praying about) trying it.

However, it says that when fasting it's important to cut carbs, so a bread fast wouldn't fit...

I came across this article about "fasting" today. How 2 days a week can prevent dementia. A coincidence? Or a gift from Our Lady??

I just checked out that recipe and will make it on Sunday.... see how it turns out - sounds delicious. I like the idea of the holy water, too. And the symbolism of each ingredient is interesting! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Joan!
What a great question.
This is definitely a good place to ask it.

While I do not have information about the topic, I see that other knowledgeable Critters were able to give you suggestions and links.

Thanks for the info, Marge!

Thank You, SMARGED for the wonderful links. You can subscribe to a free Medjugorje newsletter at www.childrenofmedjugorje.org It will send you the monthly messages and updates. Sister Emmanuel is working on consolidating healthy bread recipes specifically for fasting. Plain white bread can't cut it. Sometimes it's easier for me to just drink the water and skip the bread as long as I can. Garlic bread or croissants get me thru, but it doesn't seem like a sacrifice so I limit the amount I can have. Prayer gets me through.

Thanks for your responses. Have a Blessed Day.

Joan :) www.childrenofMedjugorje.org

I just took a quick look at the recipe on the link Marge provided. That is a very substantial bread. I have a recipe at home (@work now) that uses shredded potato. This was given in the early days from Fr. Slavko when he was the primary confessor for the then young children. I will try and get that typed into my cookbook and it will be shared. Look for it by Monday.

For those of you who would like to read even more about Medjugorje, this is a link to Frequently Asked Questions. The 6th question is about fasting.

www.medjugorje.org/faq.htm#no6

For those who cannot for any reason fast from food, there are other ways of fasting that we can offer to Our Lady:

Hi! I do try to do this fast on Wednesdays and Fridays.... not always, but frequently.... especially after my visit to Medjugorje last year.

Our world is in such bad shape that we do need to pray for peace, an end to violence, respect for all life (especially the unborn) and a return to moral values. And as the Bible says: "This kind can only be driven out by prayer and fasting." (Matthew 17:21)

According to the teaching, this is fasting on only bread and water all day. Some say it should be plain integral bread, but personally, I have tried and find it too hard with just plain bread... by 5:00 or 6:00 pm I feel weak, no energy, and in a bad mood. (I guess I need more practice!!)

So I went to the Medjugorje site to look for more information on this fasting, and found there a recipe for Fasting Bread that is much more nutritious, and now I bake that bread myself and find I can usually fast all day using just that bread. At first the recipe gave me 2 large loaves, but I bought some mini-bread pans, and now from that recipe I make 6 mini loaves and freeze them. One loaf is enough for one day. I drink lots of water, and sometimes a cup of herbal tea with a bit of honey if I feel I need it.

Here is a link to the recipe:

www.medjugorjemir.org/bread_for_fast
in
g.htm

I think each person has to gradually adapt to fasting, if you're not accustomed to it. And I also think each person can adapt to what is best for them, taking into account health, age, etc.

I believe that the intention is the most important part, and as long as it is a sacrifice, Our Blessed Mother and Our Lord will be pleased and take our sacrifice for the conversion of sinners and peace for the world.

I personally find that the biggest part of the sacrifice of fasting is just not being able to eat anything else but bread!!

Hope this helps....

Was wondering if anyone here is following the Wednesday/Friday fasts of bread and water made known in Medjugorje by Our Lady?? Sister Emmanuel is looking for healthy bread recipes to help fasting followers. I know it's not officially recognized yet by the Catholic church but I believe there is a Vatican panel studying the fruits of these apparitions and may come to light soon. John Paull II was known to be also interested.

Maybe this is not an appropriate post and needs a separate Team other than Catholic Critters. Looking for some input, and thoughts from other Catholic "Critters". May God bless and keep you close.
