A novena is a recitation of prayers for a set length of time. Usually a novena is said for nine days (novena is Latin for 9, I believe).

I'm sure you have all heard about the Catholic prayer of the Rosary. As it says on the HolyRosary.org website, "The word Rosary means 'Crown of Roses'. Our Lady has revealed to several people that each time they say a Hail Mary they are giving her a beautiful rose and that each complete Rosary makes her a crown of roses."

Usually, when one prays a Rosary, it consists of 5 decades. Each decade is recited in honor of a mystery in Our Lord's Life and that of his Blessed Mother.

The "54-day Rosary Novena" is an uninterrupted series of Rosaries in honor of Our Lady. The Novena consists of five decades of the Rosary each day for twenty-seven days in petition; followed immediately after with five decades each day for twenty-seven days in thanksgiving, whether or not the requests have been granted.

The meditations vary from day to day. On the first day meditate on the Joyful Mysteries, on the second day the Light Mysteries, on the third day the Sorrowful Mysteries, on the fourth day meditate on the Glorious Mysteries, and so on throughout the fifty-four days.

On a personal note, I used to mix up the order until I realized that it was the order of Jesus' life:

* Joyful - for His Birth and Early Life
* Luminous - for His Teaching ministry
* Sorrowful - for His Passion and Death
* Glorious - for His Resurrection and the Birth of the Church

Hello all!

Sorry to miss your posts, but I was away.

BURNINGTHYME101 - I hope you broke your record of not praying novenas recently!

Lori - Janis was absolutely right (thanks, Janis, for posting a reply!). Please, join in whenever you are able. When I first started taking part in this team's novenas, I think I joined when we had only a few days left. I'm sure Our Blessed Mother did not mind! Feel free to start whenever, don't feel you have to "make up" days you have missed.

Janis - I have never heard of that - it sounds great!

LORI1132, I've only heard encouragement from the Team Leaders. I know they would say, "Join in!" The more people praying the Rosary makes it more powerful. It doesn't matter when you start, so come and join us all, and sure it'd be nice if you can make up those decades of the Rosary.
May God's many blessings be with you, Janis emoticon emoticon

I have been a bit unconnected and so the start date of the 12th passed me up. I would like to participate, but can I make up the two days over today and the next day and then be on track for the rest????

I've never been sure about these things, and so it prevents me from starting. But, I really think that I can benefit both spiritually and motivationally!

Thanks,
Lori

I'm tryng t figure out where I write to tell you that I'm going to start the Novena tomorrow even though I don't have petitions ready. I hope you see this. I'm sorry I waited so long to sign in
emoticon . I will begin it tomorrow. I will be doing a short one starting on Sept.29th thru the 7th of October. It is with the St. Michael the Archangel Organization lead by Patrick Benedict who always notifies people when it will take place. You let him know how many Rosaries you will say, and a person is encouraged to have a Mass said at your Church during that time for "Protection of Unborn Humans. Are you aware of it?
Thank you all for all you do.
God Bless each of you, Janis emoticon emoticon

Hi Ev!
So glad you are thinking of joining us!

We usually have the 54-Day Novenas a little bit apart. After this one is finished, we will probably have a week or two in between, and then start the next one.

Please, feel free, though, to join in with this one whenever you wish. It does not matter if we are partway through, we would love to have you finish with us!

When I first joined this Team, I discovered the 54-Day Novena, and joined in when there was a week or two left to go. It was a nice intro to it for me.

The thread for the current Novena is here:

That's great, Janis. And don't worry about doing the intentions the "right" way. There are a number of "Critters" who have done more of these novenas than I have, and they are always willing to 'tweak' the intentions list if need be.

CJ, I will work on my list for intentions & will plan to have it done by the weekend. If I have a problem doing it, I will ask for your help. It is a possibility that I may not do it the way it's suppose to be done, but I will surely try.

My father told me this story many years ago.
His Aunt, my great Aunt Aggie (I believe that was the one) who lived in the Wilkes Barre, Pa area, was saying a 54 day novena for the cure of her sister's cancer.

She started her 27 days of Thanksgiving on December 8th and we all know what day that is. She went out into her yard and her rose bush was blooming 12 pink roses. She brought them in the house and they all turned blue.

She gave each one of them away, did not keep a single one. But she knew her prayer was going to be answered.

I love that story. emoticon

Thanks for being there, Mary

Our Lady has said that the Rosary is our greatest weapon to fight what is going on in our world today. I try to say a Rosary every day.
To begin the New Year, I am going to commit to doing the 54 day Novena. I'll begin Sunday January 1, 2012, offering my love to my Blessed Mother.
Thank you CJ for giving this option to the team!
Peace be with you!

No problem! I know it's different. When I first started, I was thinking, "Wait. It's Friday, why am I praying the Glorious Mysteries?" I was so confused! Now, I have to think what the regular day's mysteries are when I am not doing a 54-Day Novena.

And if we do get confused, I'm sure Our Blessed Mother does not mind.

Thanks for joining in, SAVYSAVANNAH2! And you are certainly not stepping on anyone's toes at all!

The days and the mysteries you have posted are, indeed, the usual days we say the particular mysteries of the rosary. However, for the 54-Day Rosary Novena, we say the mysteries in the order of Jesus' life, so we pray Joyful, then Luminous, then Sorrowful, then Glorious, no matter what day of the week we are saying the rosary.

So, for example, although we are beginning the rosary novena on a Sunday, we will not start with the Glorious Mysteries like we normally would pray on a Sunday, but rather with the first mysteries, the Joyful ones.

Hope that helps!

I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but I just wanted to add something about praying the rosary. To make it easier to remember on when to say the mysteries, below are the days:

Monday's - Joyful - for His Birth and Early Life

Tuesday's and Friday's - Sorrowful - for His Passion and Death

Wednesday's, Saturday's and Sunday's - Glorious - for His Resurrection and the Birth of the Church

Thursday's - Luminous - for His Teaching ministry

I hope this helps.

Thank you, cj, for the thorough, yet succinct summarization of the 54 Day Rosary Novena. I have, for years, been praying the Novena to St. Anthony and the Sacred Heart. My Italian GrandParents prayed the Rosary daily, a tradition my brother, Joe, has continued through the years. When he visits from the East Coast we always pray The Rosary together. Thanks to this Team, I am now renewing my love for The Rosary. emoticon

May God bless this Team and everyone's family.

Moving the info to the top, for new team members.

What if we woke up tomorrow with only those things that we thanked God for today?

Alleluia! Praise be to God!

I'm thrilled for you that you stuck with it. I prayed every day but one day (when I was ill), and had to make it up the next day. You did better than I!

I completed the 54-day novena. WOW! I didn't miss a day or ditch it half way or anything. It saw me through a rough patch (think pot-hole) and I really did need it as much for myself as for the others I prayed it for.

Another great website(especially for poor souls like me that forget one of my many rosaries when I'm doing this in work):

http://www.prayerflowers.com/54DayNovena
.htm

It has a calender and the order of all the prayers for you, so that if you ever happen to forget the order(again, very much me), it's all right there for you. Also helps me keep track a little better.

We all do it different ways. Some people pick an intention and pray it that day, and then continue with the next one the next day, etc. Others, I'm sure, simply pray for the Catholic Critters intentions.

I try to state them each time I say the rosary. However, if I am in a real time crunch, I ask my guardian angel to recite them for me.

It's really up to you. Pray about it, and please join in. We'd love to have you praying it with us!

I'd love to join in your rosary novena, but I have a question. I read over the long list of beautiful intentions ... when you say your rosaries do you repeat all those intentions? I was considering just saying for all the intentions of the Catholic Critters team - is that "o.k.?"
Thanks!

What a wonderful way to minister to God's people!

And how marvelous that you have been praying a daily rosary for so long!

How ever you would like to join in is great to us. Sometimes people join us during an ongoing novena, others wait until we begin a new one.

Whatever you are comfortable doing is fine.

We end our 27 days of petition today, and tomorrow begin our 27 days of thanksgiving.

Please see the 'Intentions for the 17th novena'
thread for our current intentions.

This is an exciting topic for me. I've prayed a (5-decade) rosary every day without missing once since November of 1998. I love the rosary...it leads me to much deeper prayer. I also share the rosary with residents in nursing homes and take them Eucharist. I've lost a lot of rosaries there....they "forget" that I loaned them a rosary, and refuse to give it back! LOL! So now I only purchase 20 or so of those plastic string rosaries...now they can have collections of different colors! Seriously I love these beautiful people and am honored to serve God in this small way. Should I start my 1000 when I joined yesterday, or wait until the next "group" goes?

Thanks!

I read through most of the post and went to some of the links and printed out a copy of how to say the Rosary from the Catholic Company. I think I have a good idea of what to do. My husband has prayed the Rosary before when he was in school so when I was telling him about it a lot came back to him so he will help me.

Thanks.

We are in the middle of our 16th Rosary Novena.
Tomorrow we began the thanksgiving part of the novena.
We would love to have you join us, even in the middle. Don't feel you have to wait until the next one begins to jump in.

Are you going to be starting a new Novena tomorrow? I have never prayed the Rosary but I have always wanted to learn how. I would like to join in this when it starts again.

I think this Novena is admirable, but I pray my Rosary every day in the morning. When I am faced with difficulty I do a special 1000 Rosary Novena which is completed either all day (9am-5pm) or all night (9pm-5am.
Praying the Rosary daily strengthens me and gives me courage yet sometimes it also teaches me to be patient and wait on instructions from our Heavenly Father and His Holy Spirit.

I remember as a young girl in grade school, our class attended the Fatima movie. It made a huge impression on me...I was filled with amazement and awe at such a tremendous miracle. It instilled such faith in the power and love of Mary. On my daily walk in the early morning, it is the perfect time for my rosary. Mary, our Lady of Fatima, protect all of us with your grace.

Rejoice in each new day; it is a gift!

Marilyn, I think it is wonderful of you to have a goal of praying the rosary every day. I am sure that our Blessed Mother would be happy to accept and pass on your prayers whether you pray a basic Rosary with us, or add the extra prayers.

We are just so thrilled that you are joining us! When you are ready, feel free to add any of the extra prayers. Until then, your rosary is just great.

CJ, I have a question about the Rosary Novena. One of my goals is to pray the rosary everyday. Can I log and track if I only pray the rosary or do I need to do all the prayers you have listed?
