The added benefit so far of this challenge is the change I'm noticing in my spouse's (lovingly referred to as "the roommate") eating habits. Yesterday he wanted a snack and instead of reaching for a Ding Dong, he went for an apple and a piece of low-fat cheese. Huzzah! He said, "See what you've done to me?" LOL!

This has been a bad week. I usually manage one meal a day without the TV. Vegetables this week have been really skimpy. Have to do better. My journaling this week was almost nonexistent. Too busy but that is no excuse. Hope to do better next week.

I've done pretty well with the fruit and veg this week. I have tried to make sure that each meal contains at least one fruit or veg and it has worked well.
Eating away from the desk/tv hasn't really been a problem. We usually eat dinner at the dinner table, I eat lunch in the lunch room at work at least two days a week and the other days (apart from Thursday) I at at the kitchen table. Breakfast is always at the kitchen table. I've done well.
It will get done. It will get done on time. It will be great.

I'm going to be away all day, so I'll report in now for Wk 2 challenge:
Total meals away from desk/computer: 28 (4x7) My own private goal of 1 meal w/o doing nothing but eating (no reading) MET
Total veg/fruit servings: 57
I did log in my journal everyday. That's been tough but getting easier.
Thanks for the challenge and thanks for the support!

Well, doing good with the fruits and veggies. I had an egg beater omelette this am with veggies and made sure I grabbed an apple. I'll have a pear tonight with some cheese before bed. I'm low on my cals today. I've done the journaling but am having trouble with the eating at a table without reading mail or moving to the computer. I need to refocus. Hopefully the weekend when I'm not busy working will help. I'm making notes on my calendar like crazy. But all of this should become habit soon, right? My memory cells are about to explode!
Good luck everyone! Dara52

I am so thankful, I have my families support to eat dinner at our table without any distractions. We have agreed the TV must be turned off. It is the one meal we all share and enjoy together. I've noticed i am more satisfied and that I truly eat less when I do this.
Looks like our minimum fruit and veggie for the week is 3 per day. I'm easily reaching 5/day. Sounds like we are all doing well in this part of the Challenge.

Not with sugar Debb, without sugar. boiled, not baked beans which are baked with sugar and molassas. Just plain beans. SOmetimes I spice them up by mixing in salsa. I love beans. I put them on salads too.

Really killing the fruit and veg this week! I'm going to have to get a bit more adventurous since the seasons have changed and now the berries and sweet things I like are getting more expensive!
Off to look for some interesting squash recipes...

Ok. Fruits and veggies are not the problem. I love both and get in plenty. In fact, just finished eating my apple with peanut butter IN FRONT OF THE COMPUTER. Hense my problem. I can't remember the last time I just sat and ate without doing something, so this is going to take conscious effort on my part. Will let you know how I progress. I also have not made the time to journal but will. It's all up to me. No excuses. Good luck to all of you.
Also, Annerousseau, tell me more about these beans and sugar you eat for breakfast. I'm always looking for ways to get my protein in and I love beans, but never thought about eating them for breakfast or especially with sugar. Sounds interesting. Please share. Debb

I'm still fighting my own personal step in this challenge. Since I had previously restricted my eating to somewhere other than the computer (I don't have TV), I challenged myself to eat one meal (usually breakfast) without reading, since that is how I lured myself away from the computer. I should mention that dinner is ALWAYS a family affair for me & my husband, so that is not an issue here. Anyway, I've got flu symptoms and today I just plopped down with the newspaper at breakfast. Totally forgot the challenge. So now I'll have to do lunch without reading... Wish me luck!

i have to say, the week 2 challenge to not eat in front of the tv or at a desk is very difficult for me... since i don't have a dining room table! lol
my apartment is small, and the only places for me TO eat are at my coffee table or my desk. i have been eating sans TV or computer though. it doesn't make much of a difference for me either way. when i eat at my desk i'm usually reading. i don't mindlessly shovel food into my mouth, because often i'm so distracted by my book/computer that i forget i have food there! lol which gives me time to chew, and because i need both hands to hold the book, i typically have to put my utensils down.
TV is not such an issue, because more often than not i'd rather be reading. i do have some cute little place-mats for my coffee table tho. i sit on a pillow and eat my dinner.
IF YOU CAN'T PUSH YOURSELF, BETTER GET A ROBOT THAT CAN.
Truth be told Gini, I haven't had TV in over 2 years. Now that I'm back to having internet, I download a few shows onto my laptop (House!), but I just... don't miss it all that much. Neither my fiance nor I care about TV at all.

The "just eating" when I'm eating keeps getting easier, even when I'm alone. I pay attention to the food, the taste or color...or to my surroundings...or to nothing, I guess. It doesn't seem to bother me that my mind goes into "slow drive" or something. I just float for the time.
And I do check the time when I start and finish to be able to track it because I would never be able to estimate after all that "floating" (LOL).
So, I've expanded the Challenge to all three meals and snacks...at my table and without reading or tv. I feel very accomplished. It's good that this is working because I'm still going over my calorie allotment every day...but it's only healthy food, so tomorrow is another day! I'm glad so many of you are having success on this Challenge.
See you tomorrow, Carol

BTV, I just noticed that you don't have cable. We DO have TV but I just plain don't watch it. My DH has it on after 7 at night but otherwise it just sits there. I sit facing away from it so I do hear it but I usually listen to my MP3 or read as well. I just am not interested.

We decided to make dinner the meal we eat with no distractions. We bought new candles and candlesticks and really did it up nice! We did have some jazz playing in the background, which seemed to make my food taste better. LOL!
I knew something was wrong when the kitchen table became a workstation and not a place for eating. All kinds of crap was finding its way to the table EXCEPT dinner!
Thanks for this challenge. We've had some really great conversations and have prepared some fabulous meals.

Thornbird, I know what you mean! I live with my fiance now, but for a year I lived in on my own in a studio apartment... but I had also resolved to not have cable and to not have internet!!! It was tough at mealtimes at first, with all that quiet. Eventually, I started listening to NPR while I ate. I was still able to focus on my meal while also catching up on the news at the same time.
I read a lot too, usually a newspaper that I'd hold in one hand so that I would have to stop to eat again, rather than having my hands free to mindlessly graze.

I'm not single, but about half of my job keeps me in front of a computer and I'm usually tired enough when I get home that I would GLADLY zone out in front of the tv for the evening. Healthy? No. Realistic? Yes.
One of my recent personal goals has been to reclaim the table as our place to eat. It's too easy for it to become the mail drop, homework place, project table . . .anything but the place for meals. It's been harder than I thought it would be.

This second challenge has been so hard for me since my whole life seems to be in front of a computer or the TV. I'm also single so to eat at a table alone during the whole meal has no appeal to me. I'm gonna have to think about this one.

I have to say that this challenge is one of the hardest I have done. Being single, I tend to eat on the couch and watch TV for all my meals. But I have made it my goal to eat all meals away. I cleaned off my table, even dusted it, and now sit there for lunch and dinner. Breakfast I tend to eat on the way to work, or at work, but I try not to do any work yet. Just sit, relax, eat my food. I am lucky that my boss is usually cool with this, as we are not busy first thing in the morning. But breaking the TV habit has been so great. I sit down and eat, take my time, and find that I am fuller, longer, and generally better off than if I ate the same thing on the couch.

LIBRARYLISA7, I get my fruits and veggies by eating the same things on most days. I eat beans for breakfast(boiled not baked with sugar). I eat a box of raisins for my morning snack. I have raw baby carrots before lunch as an appitizer, some kind of cooked veggie (usually broccoli) with lunch and an apple for my lunch dessert. My afternoon snack is a cup of frozen blueberries mixed with plain yogurt. I make big batches of soups, and freeze it in meal-sized portions. I load the soups with mostly veggies. I just have to remember to pull a soup out of the freezer every night to eat for the next day's dinner. If we go out, I have salad as the main course. Or if we go to Subway, I get double tomatoes, green peppers and spinach on my sandwich to get my veggies.

Well, I've really struggled this week. It's been busy and the attempt to add more fruits and veggies has been -- well -- fruitless. (sorry. couldn't resist)
Seriously, though. Intentional eating takes planning and that's a huge challenge for me. Working, raising four children, job responsibilities outside of 8-5 . . . it all adds up to suck away the time.
How do others of you manage this?

Has anyone else noticed how long it seems to take to eat (with no distractions) but then when you check the clock when you are finished you find it only took like 10 minutes?
I'm finding that every time I sit down. It is difficult not to multitask but I find now that I really eat less. What I was making for myself for lunch (in front of the computer) I can barely eat all of it when I sit down at a table and focus.
And my calorie count seems to be under control because of it. Who would have thought?

This has been ok (just about the only thing that's working for me these last couple of days...but tomorrow is a new day). Anyway, reading while eating was my "thing," and I was concerned that I'd not be able to stop, but I seem to not miss it. I think, or breathe. Every once in a while I count my chews (once heard that you should chew your mouthful's 30 times before swallowing). Sometimes it's just quiet thoughts...like clouds on a quiet afternoon. It definitely is unproductive in the usual sense, except for the peace and calm I feel. And I've been feeling energetic after eating, instead of heading for a nap after every meal. That's very nice. So, in all, the 2nd Challenge is a good one so far for me.

I confess, dinner is the only meal that I can manage away from TV and/or computer. Like many of you, I eat breakfast and check email or do other online stuff. At lunch, I eat at my desk while working. Even my snacks are generally consumed at the computer.

Breakfast is the only meal I can really enjoy without distractions. I think that is because it takes me awhile to get going in the morning anyway. I am usually alone for supper so it is really hard to eat without the TV. I have managed to have at least one meal without the TV until today. Am trying to limit the multitasking though.

Oy... all I can say is THANK GOODNESS I have coworkers in the staff room with me. Lunch counts as my away from the TV meal, so I know that every day I'm still practicing awareness when I eat. When I'm at home, especially when I eat breakfast at 5:25am, it's really really boring to not read or check up on emails or have the TV!!! With dinner it's not a huge deal because I eat with my fiance, but I eat breakfast and my after work snack (both of those are ALWAYS pre-measured) alone, and without my computer... it sucks. I just hate how quiet and non-productive that eating time becomes if I don't multi-task.
How do you guys deal with the boredom of eating in silence?

Well, I didn't do so hot last night and ate dinner in front of the TV while I was also on the computer! Tonight, I told my husband about this challenge. We were grabbing something on the way home anyway so we took our food and went to the park and ate. It was kind of nice to sit and enjoy a meal with no real distractions.

I had gotten into the bad habit of eating most, if not all, of my meals in front of the TV or the computer. Since I'm out of work right now that is all of my meals. Now that I'm eating at the table, I find I'm satisfied with less and I enjoy more what I am eating.
I did slip today though. I was chilly and decided on a cup of tea, which I took to the couch with me while I read. At one point I went for a sandwich bag of oatmeal cookies and soon had eaten too many without even realizing it. I'm upset this happened but it helped me realize how much different my eating has been compared to what mindful eating can be.

I'm doing "real" cooking, from recipes tonight and using fresh ingredients, combined, etc. (instead of just steak/potato things that don't require any thought) and find I pay better attention the harder I'm "working" to produce the meal.

I eat breakfast and lunch at a table, whether at homr or work. But dinner, we eat in front of the TV. I know that's a button but I have gotten pretty good about doing the plate/portion strategy. I fill my small plate once. Half veggies, 1/4 protein, 1/4 carb. And I don't go back for seconds which has always been my downfall. Now I go for the computer to log, track, journal, etc. By the time I'm done, any urges have passed.
One problem, our "dining room" is a dining table in the "great room" which has our TV in it. :)
Have a good day!

This is one thing that I am pretty good about doing - not eating in front of a TV or computer....I wonder how much I really PAY ATTENTION to what I am eating though. I am going to START paying attention to what and how much food is being consumed. I enjoyed the articles!

It doesn't say you have to eat at a dining table, it just says to focus your attention only on the meal, away from distractions like TV and computer. I don't think what furniture you use is that important.

Considering we don't even have a dining table, this is not doable. It's just DH and I. We use tray tables and sit wherever we can.

I always aim for 8 fruits and veggies - so this is not new for me.
The eating at the table thing - will be a challenge. Since we have no kids at home - we now eat dinner in the living room. HOWEVER, I only cook and serve according to appropriate servings. I will still try this one - even if it is breakfast.

Still going well -- I ate breakfast without reading, and we always eat supper together at the counter. Since our Youngest Kiddo left home, I've not had the heart to eat at the dining room table, but I might get up the courage to do that next week. Hope everyone has a restful evening!

I'm having trouble with this one too. Most of the time I pay attention to when I'm getting full and stop before I get stuffed. It doesn't matter if I'm watching tv or not. I'm still going to give it a shot.

This one is really hard for me!! I catch up on SP and other emails while I eat my breakfast, run out the door to get to the gym before work, work from 7:30-2:30, come home, work on my teaching portfolio, and then make dinner for my fiance and I which we enjoy while watching a TV show on my computer.
I do eat lunch in the staff lounge with my coworkers, which does keep me a little more in-tune.
I don't know how much the TV influences my eating mindfullness though... I've stopped well before cleaning my plate in front of the computer plenty of times. For me, it's far more about the food being around me than it is about the food being around a TV, if that makes sense.
Either way, I know it's something I should work on, since I hate to feel like a tube zombie, haha.

Tomorrow is another day and I'll do better, then. I managed eat away from my desk but I "power" ate in the car because I was in a hurry. I think I'll make the car off limits for this challenge, too.

I am making sure that I eat lunch away from my desk. There is a group of us that get together and have great chats. It is very relaxing and everyone is eating healthy so a great influence.

There is so much "stuff" on my table because I am so used to eating in front of the TV. I'll have to clean it off first then I think I'll break out my single serve crock pot haven't used that in a while.

This is the absolute hardest for me. We have not sat down at the dining or kitchen table to eat in the 19+ years I've been married! Hmmm, my daughter will wonder what's up!

This is fabulous- I was just talking w/ my daughter about how we haven't used the kitchen table for two weeks now! So tonight- after my workout- we are sitting down at the table instead of in front of the TV!

I have no problem with this one as I eat every meal at the table, and take my time doing so.

This challenge is tough. As much as I try to get DH to not take his meals while watching TV, he simply refuses. So of course, I can't convince DD to do it either and I MUST sit next to her to eat dinner. It's so frustrating!
He just simply can't sit and eat a meal and not do something else at the same time. But we do eat breakfast every morning at the table, so that's a start.

When my husband is home we always eat a meal at the table, but then we snack in front of the TV.
When I am alone I eat more in front of the TV or computer.
I think I need to make my own personal rule that there is NO eating in front of the computer and snacking in front of the TV is kept to a minimum, if at all. (I should say not at all, but I know that would be unrealistic for me at this time.)
All meals are to be eaten at the table. That right there would be a big help.
ok, this challenge is hard. Eat away from computer, tv ... Wow! I mean what a creature of habit. When I woke up today, I truly did not eat at the table, it was at the tv. I knew I would be at my desk, I'm the only nurse on the unit, can't really leave. But you know, food is just stuff going in when you do this. I'm not so sure I am really enjoying anything I eat.

Well, here it is the end of the first day of the 2nd Challenge...which I thought would be soooo easy for me...and what do I do? I sat and watched tv during supper. First time in years! I couldn't believe it, after I'd finished eating, of course. It must be something subconscious...
Tomorrow is another day. I'm tracking fine...and getting in the freggies (I love the word). Good luck to every one. The struggle continues...perseverance, consistency! my new watchwords.

For the challenge it is a minimum of 3 per day, but really you should try to get more than that. I wanted to set a goal that was attainable for most people.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the challenge was to have 20 freggies over the week which is 3 per day. Or is it supposed to be 5 per day for the challenge?
Thanks!

Today was pretty easy - all 3 meals were with my sweetie, with no distractions like reading, working, computers or TV. I didn't do so well on the fruits and veggies - I only got 4 servings, which is low for me in general, but pretty good for a Sunday.
I did stay within my calories for this whole weekend, so I'm pretty pleased with myself on that point. I've got a 7 day streak going, and I haven't done that in a while.

For day 1 , I ate 6 ffreggies. I am on my way.
I sat with friends for lunch and while my DH watched TV with dinner, I spent it being mindful and savouring and slowing myself down. I did a great job today.
