I would say stay on as long as you feel like it! Some days I do manual and change the settings as I go some days I do 30 some days i do 60-70mins. So I would say go with how your body feels!
I'm not sure there is an answer. When you work out, do you reach your target heart rate? When you work out, do you feel like you are reaching a point where you are challenged and you are tired when you finish? How do you feel afterward? Cardio should challenge you, make you feel tired immediately afterward, but you should recover fairly quickly and be able to go about your normal activities soon.
How long have you been exercising? How do you feel the next day? Play with the numbers and see if you can challenge yourself. You might want to do different times on different days and just mix things up a bit.
