I have just begun to lose and have mostly been doing a walking/jogging interval training on the treadmill. I have lost 5lbs this ways so I guess my vote is the treadmill.

When I do interval training on my elliptical, I lose faster than with running.

Tread mill get my vote. When I used the elliptical it made my shoulders hurt. Don't ask me why but the all way's hurt after and not in a good way. So The treadmill is the best for me.

Wow, I have never even heard of a lifetime gym membership! I go to Anytime Fitness, also a franchise but a lower-frills one. It's 24/7 key access, which I like. At home I have a weight bench with weights, resistance bands, lots of DVDs and tapes, a stability ball... but no cardio equipment.

Like most gyms, you're supposed to go only 30 minutes on cardio equipment unless no one's waiting. I usually go 30 minutes plus the 5 minutes cooldown the machines give you for going 30+ minutes, then wipe off that machine, get a drink of water if I don't have my bottle with me, then go on another machine.

Distance on the elliptical --- or any machine --- varies for me, depending on how much resistance I've set, how much incline, etc. Today, for example, I was on the elliptical a total of 70 minutes (2 sessions of 35 minutes each, with 35 minutes on the treadmill in between). So 70 minutes, total distance 3.57 miles, total calories burned 687 (that's just the elliptical, not including the treadmill). I used higher "levels" --- 17 the first time, 15 the second. First session I did "around the world" which is a hills program, second session I did "x-trainer reverse" in which you alternate between forward and reverse pedaling.

I am so bad about going to the gym...I have a lifetime membership at Bally's....don't use it though...have had a treadmill at home for about 4 years and about 3 weeks ago, hubby let me get the elliptical....he wants me to give up the gym membership but it only costs me $0.54 a month....can't even get a good cup of coffee for that....I do wish the ell. told me mileage though....I have been on contact with Nordic track and they gave me a calculation and figure for 851.6 revolutions I go 1 mile....
Help me to figure out if this is good or not....how long are you on the E for and how far do you go??

That's great! My parents have some Nordictrack equipment, but they're all the way in NV and I'm in MN, so I don't see them often. Not sure they use it much, but next time I visit, I'm going to ask if I might use it while I'm there.

I just got home from the gym a little while ago, and thought of you while I sweated it out on the treadmill and elliptical, LOL.

Sorry, I'm not sure. I don't have my own elliptical, but use the ones at the gym. They're all the LifeFitness brand, but I'd have to look again to tell you the exact model or series. There's no RPM or revolutions display, but it does tell you speed in miles per hour, calories burned (if you hold the handles with the sensors or use a heart rate monitor), level (goes from 1-20, and is based on resistance and incline), and how many minutes you've been on.

Since two weeks ago, I've lost a little over an inch on my waist and my calves. Every measurement went down at least a little but those are the most remarkable to me ... so it's working! My resting blood pressure and heart rate were great yesterday when I went to give blood --- and I hadn't even taken my blood pressure medication yet --- so I am extra sure all the exercise is working. The scale has stayed the same for two weeks, but there are other things to look at, like the tape measure, blood pressure, etc.

Kara---you are a maniac on the E---you go girl....
I just got mine and trying to to the first weight loss program and I am dripping!!! 20 minutes max 65 RPM.....mine doesn't give miles but after 20 minutes I will do 1150 revolutions.....
Can you help me equate that to you?Does your tell you RPM or revolutions??
I know its no competetion...just like to know what others are doing....

I burn more calories on the elliptical. However, due to past fractures (and things not growing back together perfectly), I do not run for any great length of time ... intervals of jogging, yes, jogging a whole mile, no. The level of resistance and incline will make a difference in your calorie burn, as well as speed. I couldn't run 7 mph on the treadmill without serious joint pain and possible permanent injury due to the impact. But I can go 7 mph on the elliptical, even at a high "level" (resistance and incline). That's probably why I can burn more on the elliptical. Also on the elliptical I can use my arms on the handlebars, pushing and pulling, which works more muscles and ups the calorie burn for me.

I like the Elliptical because I can burn more calories in a shorter amount of time! Today I went 35 min and I was able to burn 352 calories!

My hubby brought home a weighted vest. Yeah Ive been wearing it for two days now. Thats something you add more weight too to lose more weight.. Im just trying it out. The way I sweat it rubs to much & holds in your body heat.I know he can take it back to his buddy. Its something I wouldnt waste my money on.. The guy who bought it wants me to buy it..I feel the way I run on my mill is enough burn in it self. I keep it Challenging.. Have a great day.. Team leader Chris

This past week I had the opportunity to work out on the elliptical AND the treadmill every day of the week.

I found the elliptical brought my heart rate up to the 130-135 range very quickly, but the treadmill only brought it up to 110-112...unless I started to jog, then it would climb to 120-125, but drop back down once I resumed walking.

I'm a long-time treadmill user as that is what is in my home, but boy I sure did work up a sweat much more quickly on the elliptical and my legs were like jello after an hour on it.

I like them both in different ways.

I love my treadclimber. It works especially well with my bad knee (3 surgeries) and bad back. It's hard, though, to go beyond 30-35 minutes.

I find that I burn alot on the elliptical. I like the treadmill too, but I work harder on the elliptical.

AMPEDUP88, ya got to stretch before & after. Me I do aerobics to warm my muscles up then I do stretching then I get on the treadmill. Also I do pilates after the mill.But I burn more with the mill. The E kicks my butt, the mill is ok for me, maybe used to that, just got the E about 3 weeks ago...do both when I am not sick---taken 10 days off, TOMORROW I will be back in the swing...

I feel like I work harder on the elliptical. Maybe it is because it is new to me but I breathe harder and burn more calories.

We have a treadmill and elliptical, I love the elliptical, I do atleast 30 minutes a day as well as another 30 minutes of varius excercises. I been doing ok losing between 3-5 lbs a week . I have a harder time with legs cramping up on the treadmill.
Any suggestions for that??

I am working out diligently on my new treadmill. I had been exercising before. I was doing DVD exercise programs such as Leslie Sansome and others but without results. As soon as I started on my treadmill I have been dropping a pound a day. I used to go to the gym to workout. I always knew I was getting a better workout on the treadmill versus the ellipitical. I used to do 30 minutes each, but I would sweat profusely after the treadmill. So my vote goes to the treadmill.
