I begin at a 3.2 until I get going - then I pick some songs and depending on the tempo or how I get into the song, I'll go at a speed of 3.3-3.8. Between songs, I take a quick water break and lower my speed down to 3.1, then go back when the song starts back up again

4.2, but it's not a comfortable fast walk... almost a jog, so I do it until I'm breathless, which might take a minute, then back it down to 3.2-.7. On another subject, Any thoughts on how to deal with the 'air hunger' from being hypothyroid? Thanks, Susan

I'm 61 and have been walking for a long time. I walk comfortably at 3.7. I walk for 5 minutes ...walk a minute/jog at 5.0 for 2 min. and continue that alternation for 30 minutes, back to 3.7 at incline 3 for 5 or 10 min, and then 4 at 3.5 for 5 minutes and then cool down at 3.4 for 5. Anyway, that's my usual tm routine. Whatever you're doing.....you're doing great....JUST MOVE! Hope you all have a beautiful Sunday. R E L A X .....enjoy the day. XO Mary Ann emoticon

I'm 5'1" and I usually seem to walk faster than my husband when we walk the dog because my short legs need to take more steps to cover the same amount of ground. I don't know how that would translate to the treadmill, but, it seems that if short legs have to take more steps to achieve the same mph, we would have a slower mph when we need to break into a jog.

I'm 5'1" and have been sedentary until recently. I found an ad on SparkPeople and am trying out the local ladies' workout center. Before I got lazy, I could walk on my treadmill at 3 mph and jog for very short periods at about 4.5. I plan to keep track on SparkPeople and see if I can get the rate up.

I walk comfortably at 4.0mph. I have gotten it up to 4.5mph but can't walk any faster than that. My runs are from 6.5 - 7mph for a max of 3 miles before a walk break.

I am 5'4" and walk on the treadmill at 4.0 - 4.3 comfortably for an hour. On alternate days I bump it up to walk/run intervals so the running part is 5.3 to 6.0 for 2 minutes then walk at 4.0 for 2 to 3 minutes until my breath returns to manageable.

Like others said, smaller quicker steps are the way I do it.

On my home treadmill I cant walk its easer to jog or run (then again manuals treadmills are like that I've been told - cause of the manual power to get them moving) at home I average 5.0 to 8.0 depending on how my ankles are feeling.

However, at the gym I go between 3.0 and 4.0 depending on the incline I'm using.

I am 5'10" ...and a big, uncoordinated woman..I walk from 3.5 to 4.0 at 5% incline. I can jog (barely) outside, but I cannot run/jog on a treadmill...I feel like I am falling when I try.

Speeds, inclines, etc..don't really matter to me anymore. Consistency at the gym is my # 2 problem (eating too much is still # 1)...

I'm 5'3" and I walk at 4.5 mph. I can do that at an incline of 15 for 45 minutes. My preference on the treadmill is running. I use 6.1 mph as my recovery speed, 6.5 mph as my "cruising" speed and 6.9 as my running speed.

Hi all, I am 5'4 and 3.5 is a fast walk for me and 4 is a jog. The fastest I can run is 4.5. I was just diagnosed with degenerative arthritis last week. Which is frightening at 31 yrs old.

I am going to stick to 3.5 from now on. Afraid of further damage.

I don't know how folks can run at 7.0. I turned my up that high just to see it go. It sounded like a airplane! LOL

My baseline pace is 4.0, but I bump it up 3-4 times during a session to 5.0, sometimes 6.0 for @ 3-5 mins. at a time. By the time I hit 5.0 I'm usually doing a slow jog. I always have a 5% incline.

Shorter steps equals quicker foot turnover which equals more mph. Length of legs isn't supposed to be a factor. Try sorter steps and you might catch up to your ex. Keep track of your heart rate cuz you don't want to overdue it.

I can only walk at 3.6 for a short time. Any higher and I feel like I need to do a slow jog. 3.2 is my comfort setting. I find adding hills going at a faster pace is very hard to do for a long period of time. How do you improve your speed?

Laura.

The fastest I can walk on the treadmill is 3.8,
any faster my ankles and feet hurt. I'm 5'2".
I would like to know how one can walk 4.0 and higher
without hurting or their heart beating out of their
chest.

I'm not sure if it's because I'm heavier, but I feel like I'm going to start jogging at 2.6 and I'm 5 foot 4. 2.4 is pushing it and if I stay there, my calves hurt after a while. So, I usually stay at 2.2 comfortably. How do you all do 5.0 and such?

I don't know how some of you do it but any faster than a 3.9~4.0 and I am jogging. Clipping right along at a jog. 5.2 I am at a light to med run and not up hill. Did I miss read the questions or are my legs just short. I am 5 foot tall.

Find my free blog chatthefat for the 27 rules I live by.
Thanks

I am 5'3" and I can walk at a speed of 5.2 for 45 minutes at a time on 6% incline..I break my workouts up into 3 segments.
I run at a speed of 7.1
In July, I started out at a speed of 3.5, I just got stronger everyday.
I cover miles as well--I walk 10-12 miles a day on the treadmill.

I'm curious because while my ex-wife is a lot shorter and less athletic than I am she could always walk faster and for a longer period than I could. On my TM I can walk at 4mph for five minutes and not much faster without having to break into a jog.

Would anyone like to see how fast they can walk and report whether they are male or female? Please don't overdo it if you try because I don't want anyone injured.
