When I travel I try to have protein for breakfast with fruit, but I save the fruit for lunch. Then I'm good to go for a healthy supper!

Mu husband and I just got back from two weeks in Hawaii and California on vacation. In Hawaii we had fresh pineapple and papaya for breakfast each a.m. and split entrees when we went to restaurants. We did lots of hiking ( through a rain forest, a botanical garden and in the Sierra Nevada Mts. in CA). When we got home, I was thrilled to discover I had not gained a single pound. Hallelujah!

I have had to work out how to stay on track during conferences and business trips. I once wrote a blog post about the ways I cope:

nal_individual.asp?blog_id=2777489

For car camping and kayak trips my strategies are a bit different becaise the exercise is built in and the food options are more rustic:

Any/all suggestions are good! On one vacation I gained a TON of weight. On the next vacation I gained none. I think it depends on your mind-set before you leave home.

Thanks for all the good ideas on how to stay on maintenance while traveling. I did gain about 3 lbs. the week I was gone, but after a week at home, Jazzercising and doing yoga and smaller portions, I've lost those 3 lbs. It's fun to travel, but I'm always glad to get home!

So far I've been able to continue logging and blogging when on vacation. I don't earn as many points and I don't read the articles or post on my teams, but I do keep track of food and fitness. I also make sure and continue exercising. I'll go for a walk or run. (We are outdoors kind of people.)

Great thread!

What a great question. It is more challenging when you travel! I recently traveled and made a visit to a National Park with hiking trails part of my trip. The remainder was in Washington, DC, which is definitely a city for walking. Nearly everyone there does a load of walking.

Also, it really helps to have healthy eating choices. I was visiting my daughter and she's as healthy-eating focused as am I, so we did well.

My hubby and I got our motorcycle licenses a few years before he retired, never knowing there was an amazing group of people out there and some AMAZING roads in this country. On TV and in the movies you see motorcycles as some kind of semi criminal group of heavy drinkers terrorizing the road, but in all my riding (about 200,000 miles in the last 15 years) I've never seen one. There is nothing like the open road and the time to enjoy it. I am very sad that my husband isn't able to do this anymore. I don't think I would enjoy it without him.

Yeah, we're roughing it now while we're in our late 50s early 60s - currently in Australia, having spent 3 months in NZ before arriving here. We figure we'll do the rough stuff now (Africa should be soon!) - because we realize we'll eventually slow down and need easier travel. Saving Europe for last, because we've both been there, plus we could do just cities and museums, the easy kinds of activities for when we're 70 or 80 something.

We have a blog, if you're interested:

Travel as a lifestyle while you can in early retirement. My hubby and I would ride our motorcycles all over the country, 500-600 miles a day some days, weeks on end, every summer. Then he had three strokes, gave up the bike for a trike, but still can't take the stress of hours in the saddle, so long distance travel is no longer possible. Somewhere in the back of our minds we all know that the go go years of early retirement can't last forever, but it isn't real until it happens. Travel by car just isn't the same adventure, and I'm glad we packed it in while we could.

I'm getting better at not panicking whenever the suitcase comes out of the attic. When possible I pack snackable veggies and fruit but sometimes that isn't the case. I accept that there may be weight gain but always get back to my Day 1 as well, upon return. My goal is always to maintain wherever I am on the scale. I haven't done much traveling now that I really am at maintenance.

Travel as a lifestyle? Wow. Not sure I could do that but it would be fascinating to sit down and hear all about it.

DH and I are travelling as a way of life for our retirement plan - and I love it! I haven't weighed myself in a while, but my jeans fit just fine.

I watch what I eat, but on days when I'm walking miles and miles I might eat a little more, or have a dessert. On driving days, I aim for eating less.

And on hot hot days, I either swim or go to a museum and do my walking there.

When I travel I tend to get more exercise than just being at home. (I took Jazzercise WAY long ago, I loved it!!)
I always pack a cooler full of healthy stuff, and I stop at grocery stores and health food stores instead of fast food places.
If I go out I'm pretty good at ordering the better options on the menu.
It takes practice.
If I gain weight its just from swelling up from water weight and that goes away.

Traveling is hard because you have to eat out three times a day. No matter how careful I am, I always gain 3 pounds. That's 3 pounds whether it's a week away or a month. I eat no snacks, no desserts, no bread or chips, no pancake breakfasts, just nibble at dinner, and still gain weight every time. Some people love travel because they get to try new restaurants. The people we travel with are always asking me what kind of a vacation is it when I don't eat ice cream. I never eat out so a new restaurant doesn't mean anything. We travel by motorcycle so we can't carry food, and riding is work (especially those delicious twisty roads!) so there is nothing for it but to do the best I can until I get back. I go back to basics on Day 1 of my return, and it always is gone within a week. I don't worry about it anymore, it's a foregone 3 pounds that I'll have to deal with on my return.

How do you maintain when you travel? I've been away from home for a week now. I can't Jazzercise and it's too hot to walk. I'm watching the calories, but probably will be over goal weight by the time I get home. I can hardly wait to get back to my regular routing and get back to goal weight.
