I should really post this in my yoga team forum and I probably will, but I think it fits here too. I know that yoga has made a difference in my body, but I also know that maintaining my healthy weight has as well. Last week my yoga teacher.... who I have worked with for two years said he thinks my body is getting younger!

People used to tell me I am built like a dancer: straight up and down, no waist, no butt. When I was heavy I looked like a fireplug. Now I am the same general shape just smaller. It IS nice to hear, isn't it?

Odd moment: Someone at work asked me if I was a dancer as I had such a petite lean body.

Shopping is such a change..I can try on bright colors, bright patterns and not worry if they make me look fat. It is fun.

I have to get used to wearing fitted clothes. I wore loose fitting clothes for such a long time..Now if I wear tight stretchy jeans, I sometimes still feel fat..even if I don't look it!

Thanks for finding the article. It is a hoot..... with a whole lot of truth in it.

Odd moment in maintenance: Someone recently called me an ectomorph (The ectomorph body type is the skinny person who has a really hard time putting on muscle or weight in general. They tend to have long lengthy limbs, and have incredibly low fat )

I am loving this discussion!! Yes sizes have changed and for women there are no standard sizes. Growing up I was very thin... the last few years I was just over the top of healthy BMI... so when I lost weight I aimed to the middle range of BMI.... through all of the changes my sizes ranged from 6-10 and for the most part still do!! That doesnt make any sense.

Dave Barry once wrote a piece on men and women's sizes and how they see themselves that was quite humorous. I wish I had kept it and put it on my refrigerator.... If anyone finds it let me know!

I suspect I will never really fundamentally change my internal view of myself as being overweight. People tell me I'm skinny, and I just look at them with a degree of puzzlement. I am nicely in the middle of my BMI range now and I do see that I am looking pretty good and fitting my clothes nicely. But it's very much the addiction mentality -- I KNOW I'm just a few mistakes away from putting 30 pounds back on, and I know I will always have to remain conscious. And spend more time on it than I really want to. It seems so silly to be at a nice, normal weight and fitness and yet to be worried about gaining weight.

I am now in a size 00, which is ridiculous. I still have my 1983 suits that are size 8 and snug.

I have thickened through the middle after menopause, no matter how many situps I do. My doctor has told me that there are no exercises that can have me looking 25, and that it's time to look just slim and healthy. I don't have to like it but there it is. Aging is a bummer.

I know that feeling of being "small." Who me, I was 5'7" in 7th grade, rested my head on the head of my first date at a dance. I have always seen myself as big, but must admit, I do like the side view now.
DH points out that whether I see it or not, I am narrower side to side from the front on. Like you I have sized myself out of a couple favorite stores.

I just reached maintenance, so it's all still strange for me! Whenever someone calls me small, I get this silly dazed grin on my face. Who, me? It's good that we have Sparkpeople to talk about this little moments. For a life-long slim person, it would sound like bragging to focus on all the moments when we felt slim, but for someone who is experiencing it for the first time, each moment is an important adjustment!

Kind of crazy about vanity sizing - where will it end? When I hit size 10 I was thrilled because it was SO easy to find sizes compared to size 18. Now I'm fitting sizes 4-6 and it's getting harder and harder to find those sizes - and I know I'm not the littlest person out there. I guess truly petite and slim people must have to shop in the children's department! It's important to have clothes that fit bigger people too, of course... I keenly remember struggling to find clothes that fit and flattered when I was wearing an 18. It's surreal to be on the other side of the clothing problem now!

I agree about the size thing. My wedding dress 45 years ago was a size 10. When I got back to my "wedding" weight five years ago, I was wearing 4's and sometimes 2s.

I finally went on an un-shopping trip just to figure it out. Then when I'd established that I wear a size 8 dress but size 2 pants or skirts, I walked across the street and bought a size 4 suit! (I had the skirt taken in.) Every time I wear it, I think, "Only on Planet Nordstrom do my shoulders fit into a size 4 jacket!"

Odd moments: Wanting to buy a magazine to read and finding that all the headlines about losing 10 pounds in 10 days don't relate to me anymore! What will I read now?
Going into stores and choosing the medium size clothes and finding that they don't fit. I still need the sales people to advise me to try on the small, because I don't believe I'm really a small yet.

My maintenance odd moment came when I went 6 lbs. over my weight range. Not only did no one notice, I did, though, but I discovered I can get back on track. I didn't gain back 40 lbs., I didn't start eating like I used to, I simply paid more attention to my lifestyle change and then lost 3 lbs. quickly. I proved to myself that I can do this and live in my new lifestyle choice. Besides, I love the feeling of fitting into my smallest pair of jeans! emoticon

I don't think I'm as "good" as all that, but my coworkers were surprised that I unbent and had a (half) piece of turtle cream pie in honor of a friend's birthday. Hey, I like my sweets--I just make space for them by not eating something else. emoticon emoticon

Caroljean, I wish my friends were as attuned to my eating as your family is. I just say the same thing my vegetarian DIL says: I'll figure it out. But I have been known to eat first and just drink a lot of decaf while everyone else eats. One of the joys of being "of a certain age" is that we can have little eccentricities that don't need explaining, and my family thinks it's charming by now. And it's really not all that unusual, even though it's largely invisible.

Nell, I love your thoughtful reply to my comment. I think I have been living under the impression I would be like I was until my late 30's, early 40's. I never had to worry or think about what I ate. Then Mom died of ovarian cancer over the course of 14 months, beginning 5 months after my daughter was born. I used WW to lose that weight. Then Dad died... heart attack on Sunday, gone on Tuesday. That didn't come off, finally fell into deep depression and added more weight. Finally found my way out, but I still think about what I eat, record my meals, am committed to exercise. The only issue I have is that my family will often say "Oh, we can't go there to eat because there will be nothing Mom can have." I wish I could get them to let go of that. Any insight into what that bothers me so???

I think the idea of the "fat person in a thin body" has more to do with an attitude. I will never ever, as long as I live, have the same attitude toward food as my always thin brother and sister. I always wanted the day when saying no to the wrong food would be as easy as saying no to, say, going fishing, the way it has always been for my brother and sister. I thought that once I got to my magic number, I would transform into them. I didn't. I still have to measure out my plates. I still have to endure the internal monologue when I pass the pastry counter at the store ("just a few more steps and I'm home free, just don't stop"). No one on the outside sees any of this, many would find it baffling (If you don't want it just don't eat it how hard can it be?) which is why a place like Spark is so important. Everyone here KNOWS.

In AA they call themselves "recovering alcoholics", never "recovered" because no matter how long it's been since the last drink, they are all just a sip away from jail or divorce or death. The fall would be slower and less dramatic with food, but a fall nonetheless. AA has a saying that once you turn a cucumber into a pickle, it can never be a cucumber again. But there is good life left in a pickle provided that I never think I am "cured" and can go back to being what I used to think being thin would be. My sister and brother NEVER ate as much as I did, never wanted to, and I will never intuitively be like that. I am a very successfully thin pickle now, and that's just fine with me.

That's it exactly! I think a big part of maintenance is reconciling our inner selves to our new outer reality. What do I do, now that I'm not constantly trying to lose weight? (Answer: constantly try not to gain weight...oh, well.) If I'm not the fat little girl or the pudgy woman, who am I? My body image is still out of whack. On a good day, my inner self is at least 3" taller and 20 lbs heavier than my outer self. Sometimes I stand in front of the mirror and make myself see what's really looking back at me. emoticon I'll probably always be surprised at how short I am, but I'm getting better about the body size!

It occurs to me in reading through these posts, that others are seeing a more honest picture of us than we are allowing ourselves to see. I've heard the expression "a fat person trapped in a skinny body." I wonder if some of us feel that way. I am just beginning (after 5 years) to believe I am a healthy person with a BMI that is not overweight or underweight.

Wonderful moments everyone!! My odd ones come at the hospital when I am being described as light, thin, tiny, petite. Who Me?? emoticon Got a lot of people interested in Sparks then ;)
In fact now I have to tell the people who have known me the longest that I am not trying to lose weight, that I have been maintaining for two years -but they think I may be too 'thin', but that is only because I was so heavy before and I have a very small, light frame all that blubber was hanging on so they can't imagine someone with my bone structure being actually that small when they knew my huge before for so long.
Happy Maintaining everyone!

The longer you keep your weight off, the fewer are the people who know you lost weight. People who met you when you are thin will all think you were always thin. When I tell people I used to be fat they say they can't imagine it. They think I am automatically not eating the donuts. They have no idea.

I like all of these posts. Some of my moments of maintenance:

Like others, people at work tell me their diet woes and ask me how I did it..but don't want to really listen.

Each time I exercise, I have to key in my weight on the elliptical..I still can't believe I am keying in 130..actually I should be keying in 128..but give myself a leeway.

Someone saw me and said, "You are half your size." I thought..Ok..now that is an exaggeration..However I have lost 50% of my body weight.

This is crazy..I fit size 6 pants, but feel nervous buying them..so I am keeping many of eights!

To decide on a weight is to decide on the life you want to live.

I got to thinking that it would be nice to have 3 pair of jeans instead of 2, but I'm cheap. I picked up a $13 pair of jeans at Sam's Club on speculation that I could get into 32 x 32. They fit.

32 waist, 32 inseam is what I wore in high school. Granted, those were regular fit and these are relaxed fit; but these are a little loose in the butt.

For a woman, that might be a great victory; for a guy, it's just an odd moment.

Good Job CarolJean, reminds me that when I am asked to give my weight on a form, I actually have to stop and think to pull up the correct number from my brain. Is it 150, no 140, no it's in the 130's now!! Is that an odd maintenance moment or just an (early) senior moment.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Just reminded of another wonderful maintenance moment by the previous post. Last time I went in for a check-up, my doctor commented on the fact that my weight had not varied in the last three years... e.g. from ages 62-65!!!

These are all great moments. I've been in maintenance for approx 18 months. I never realized it until about a year ago. Up until then I just thought I was still on a plateau. Just continuing to be in maintenance, and remaining the same weight for 18 months, no matter what, is odd to me. The first time in my life I haven't been on a roller coaster.

In addition, I'm now watching everyone else around me continue the roller coaster ride, even the thinner ones! And I critique their meal and snack intake. It feels great!

Dear Lord, set my sights on You and Your great attributes. Help me to live in Your presence, dependent on Your guidance each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Odd moments with maintenance: Whenever I get too close to the lower end of my BMI, people ask me if I'm OK; if I need money; if I'm eating alright. My pastor told me last summer he could feel my bones when he hugged me. I have to remember to eat enough not to get that low.

I started SP at 138 lbs in October 2010. My goal weight was supposed to be 125, which I reached in January 2011. I have stayed at 125 (give or take a few pounds) ever since.

Odd but wonderful moment every time I wash clothes. I dry my jeans on high temp now and they still slip right up the hips and over the butt and button right away without inhaling!! Still can't get over that. (Used to have to take them out at damp dry and stretch them manually then still had to lay down or suck it in to ge them to button on some days!!)

I am within my weight goal of between 145 & 150. I still would not mind losing just a few more lbs so that my size 8 clothes would be a little less tight. Still following menu plan and exercise plan. I find it hard to do some exercises as I have pain in both knees and my left hip. But I just don't do the ones that I can't do. The major problem is with walking. I can walk fine on good days but some days my hip hurts to much (beginnings of rheumatoid arthritis). But I am in my range so I am happy.

HOPE is not pretending that there's never any sorrow - It's the knowledge that our troubles will be overcome tomorrow. It's the inner strength we call on to sustain us now and then, till our problems lie behind us and we are happy again

Yep, I'm right there with ya...all seven of the other folks in my office are either on a diet or have a wish to lose weight. A couple times over the years they've had weight loss contests among themselves. A couple of them come and go from Weight Watchers. And I am happily the odd (wo)man out, as I have done and achieved what they all wish they could do!!

Can't believe it happened so soon, but I had a great moment today. Had to see my orthopaedist today. Hadn't seen him in some time. His assistant commented on my weight loss, but was even more impressed with my demeanor and serenity.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

Fun thread! My super health conscious 21 year old sister was visiting from out of town and we went shopping at the mall. I could shop in the same stores and sizes as she did. That was a really odd feeling.

I've had that conversation! "How'd you do it?" "Ate less. Kept a log of my food intake. Moved more. Kept a log of my fitness minutes." "Oh." emoticon No, just kidding, I have this magic wand! emoticon

I love all these posts about the odd moments. I used to love to shop at two particular stores and now neither of them have clothes small enough for me. My DD is delighted because she thought they sold 'old lady" clothes. I need to remind her I am an old lady!

How about being the 'go to' person for fitness/nutrition questions!? I don't mind, but it is funny when people don't like your answers. Everyone is always looking for that 'magic' answer.

There was an ad for Jenny Craig in January a couple of years ago that really got to me. Valerie Bertinelli was still their spokesperson, and she said, through tears, that for the first time in a couple of decades she was starting a year where "losing weight" wasn't a resolution because she had already done it. It takes a while to see that "being" there is as much of a success as "getting" there. Valerie's amazement that she had accomplished what had for so long seemed impossible was beautiful.

I've been in maintenance since September and it is still "odd" for me to get on the scale every morning/week (depending on my mood) and see basically the same number (+/- 3)!! When will the wonder of stability wear off? Never, I hope!! It's what keeps me on track.

Isn't it wonderfully strange? My sister works for a clothing company, and it still amazes me that I'm now sample-sized!

I know for many of us, this is the first time in our lives that we haven't been trying to lose weight. I find that this presents some odd moments. Yesterday an announcement was made of a "Biggest Loser" group starting at work...and there's no reason for me to join. Another one: Looking through a catalog and realizing that they don't have pants or skirts small enough to fit me. emoticon
