I put on a new sweater dress this afternoon, it clung to my curves, including my tummy, and I looked in the mirror and thought, "Looks good!" Amazing!

Not sure I'd call it "odd," though this comment from a co-worker is something I can't remember ever hearing before and made me happy all day. She said, "Your waist looks tiny in that dress."

I had a mammogram the other day. The lady giving it to me was so sweet and then looked at the pictures a minute and said, "oh my." Of course I was concerned and she told me to look at the pictures - she brought up last year's and this year's and pointed out to me - I have bigger pectoral muscles!! She said, "You have been working out!"

I was so happy - who knew that mammogram lady could tell that? LOL!

Catching up yet again. Nell, I didn't know about not wearing the same bra two days in a row.

Oneweigh, I love hearing my doctor comment on my weight now, since he mentioned it not once when I was heavy. It is interesting at work having people dance around the subject of my weight, as they either don't want to offend me or they are too timid to ask if I am unwell. For those who have asked, we now have a growing cadre comparing notes, though most have gravitated to myfitnesspal. I like the apps and less cluttered site at myfitnesspal, but I really need the social network at SP the most (all of YOU), so I just put up with the inconveniences and klunky apps at SP.

I have two Chantelle bras, then splurged on bras by Lise Charmel and Marie Jo. Expensive but oh! the fit! And they are gorgeous! And I found out that like leather shoes, you shouldn't wear them two days in a row. Who knew?

Catching up again. Nell, when I read about the "cone-shaped" bras, I almost spewed my coffee! I didn't wear those, but I see them on older movies.

I got fitted at a bridal shop that also carries lines of very good undies. The bras were expensive, but I ended up with Chantelle, which I could replace on-line for less once I knew my true size. I need to go back there now that I'm where I want to be weigh-wise.

Speaking of Forever 21 and H&M sizes... why in the world do we do this to teenage girls? As if their self-esteem isnt low enough already!
My 18 yo stepdaughter is a size 14/16 or XL in Misses sizes but she so badly wants to wear the teen clothes. While I applaud the stores for carrying plus sizes, no one who is really plus sized could shop there! They run so small! I typically wear an 8 and I barely fit into their XLs. I do wish there was some standardization of sizes.

I got myself sized at Intimacy. They sell brands I've mostly never heard of, European made and very expensive, but perfect fit. I remember corsetiere shops from when I was little, and that was where Mom bought all her underwear. They fit me for my first bra. I was still too small for the torpedo shaped cones that were popular back then.

just caught up on this thread too - i've also become a cheap date (though a lot of my initial weight loss was giving up the nightly glass(es) of wine), and i had already planned a stop at nordstroms in seattle for new bras - though maybe i should give victorias secret a try?

i'm about the same size as nell, also about 26.5 inch waist - bought two new pairs of jeans here in sweden (one rolls at the cuffs, and the other were probably intended for capris to the standard tall swede), but will be curious to see what size will fit when i get home.

Nell, I just caught up on this thread. You are so right! When parts started "heading south," I asked a friend who had abnormally large breasts (before reduction surgery) for bra advice. She had to get hers custom made, but she did clue me into the need to get properly fitted with a good bra for a better profile. And posture? My chiropractor, my massage therapist, and my yoga instructor are all prodding me to stand and sit straight.

Oneweigh, loved your "cheap date" comment!

Celia, it IS surprising that any part of my body can get smaller without my trying real hard, and I have done a million of those arm flinging exercises we did in high school to "improve my bust". Alas the only thing that improves my bust is a good bra and really good posture. Walking the way my grandmother taught me (ramrod straight, shoulders back) pushes them right out there.

The oddest thing that has happened to me while in maintenance is that my clothes have started wearing out!

Always before they got too small to wear or the seams split. Now in the past 2-3 years I've had the unfamiliar experience of my jeans wearing out at the knees, or in the seat. I mean the fabric itself is actually going threadbare.

I've never been able to wear the same clothes long enough for that to happen before! LOL

Fortunately all the vanity sizing, etc. doesn't really interfere with me because I buy everything except workout gear and underwear at thrift shops. In those places the clothes are from so many different decades and manufacturers that the numbers on them mean nothing. Heck, I never even know if what I'm looking at is a Misses or a Juniors size! I just try it on and if it's flattering, I get it.

The skirt and top I wore on TV were from Salvation Army. For real! LOL
(I don't wear them as often as my jeans, so I don't expect them to wear out anytime soon, though.)

A recommendation to all women who have lost weight: get your bra size checked! You'll find you need a smaller band. There is nothing like the feeling of pretty new bras that FIT!

Here's another one - I recently discovered that I have skinny feet! I was shopping for wedge-heel sandals. I measure at a size 7 in flat shoes, but need a size 6.5 in brands that run large, or for some heels. Well, the straps over the toes on every single pair of sandals I've tried on have way too much room in them. The size 6's seemed to fit perfectly, but I was afraid that at the end of the day they'd be too tight. I've tried ball of the foot cushions for the size 6.5's, but they still feel way too big - go figure! I may have to freecyle the shoes and chalk it up to experience:).

CS, loved your post, especially the oath that you'd never have an "X" in your closet again! At 145 pounds, I can't believe I have an XS sweater in my drawer. At the other end of the spectrum, I cleaned out a BUNCH of big clothes today, from size 12 to 1X.

I'll give Banana Republic a try. I got some 00s at Nordstrom that fit, but price can't be a consideration there. I still think that the concept of 00 is ridiculous! I still have to buy size 12 patterns! A size 12 waist is still 26 1/2, which is me. Patterns only go down to size 6 which is a waist of 23 and a hip of 32 1/2. The waist is the key; I can expand the bust and shrink the hip, but I have to cut the waist to fit, and 26-27 inches is a 12.

Go figure.

I've been having the "too small for stores" problem at times too. Whoever was having trouble with the Gap -- try Banana Republic. Same company, similar styles, but clothing sized much smaller. I tend to be a 4 in most things as higher-end retail places like Brooks Brothers, Nordstrom, etc. Mostly I'm a 4 (occasionally a 2) at Banana. Gap I often need a 0 (not usually in 00 territory for most things there). So if you're a Gap 00, Banana should have stuff that fits you well. They're a little pricer than Gap, but I think the quality is a little higher as well -- I just try to keep an eye out for their (rather frequent) sales. And it's not like Brooks Brothers or Nordstrom prices.

It's an odd problem to have after years of having to catalog shop or go to specialty stores because I was too big for normal stores. Once I got lower than an XL, I sword I'd never have an "X" in my clothes size again. But silly me, my closet is now full of XS's!

My mother still hasn't gotten used to it, and continues to insist that I'm naturally "big boned" despite all evidence to the contrary. (I'm relatively tall at 5'7", but have a small-ish frame. Who knew?) She was just used to seeing me big. I'm hoping she'll get used to small...

I have also received comments of people saying ..you are too thin or is everything Ok..like I am sick. Then as others have commented..younger people or older people who work out at my gym, think I look wonderful.

I am wondering if I keep this thin, people will stop comparing me to the fat me and just not say anything.

While on vacation in Europe I was worried about gaining weight (I did gain a pound) but I knew I was doing okay at maintaining in range because as I walked the skirt i was wearing kept turing on me... so it slowly worked its way around me! The front was in the back! I just kept walking and it kept turning.... tee hee.

A few of my odd moments were I pulled a pair of jeans out of the dryer and I thought they were my daughters and looked again and realized they were mine. Funny how we see ourselves as bigger then we are.
A co-worker commented that I lost too much weight too fast and I said I've only lost a average of a pound a week. I've done alot of excercise and toning though.
Another co-worker said I looked great awhile back and I said thank you only five or ten more pounds I'd like to lose and she said Reallly you don't look like you need to lose any.
I'm trying to get rid of the fat girl image but it does take time.
Healthy bmi that's the most important thing.

I've been maintaining on Sparkpeople for five years now and agree that finding clothes that fit is sometimes a challenge. When I tried on clothes at a boutique for a fashion show recently the only thing that fit was a top and jacket marked "one size fits all". They looked miniscule, but when I put them on they looked great because they were made of a fabric that stretches. You can see how they looked on me by going to my Sparkpage. I bought them and really enjoy wearing them. emoticon

Well, I was a special ed teacher for 34 out of 35 years..... by the time I finished I transposed numbers, letters and could no longer spell common words because they had been imprinted on my brain spelled incorrectly for years! HA!

So a little error - ah that is nothing.

Does anyone else do this? I write down my weight every morning so I can keep track of trends. This morning (pre-coffee) I started to write down 140 instead of 114. I even did that once in entering my weight on Spark. There is a one week spike in my weight chart a year or so back. I wonder if the next week my friends all saw something like, "Oneweigh has lost 30 pounds!" emoticon emoticon

I don't like teen clothes either... they aren't really cut for "adult" hip to waist ration and the styles aren't me. I have two stores that were favorites where I can now rarely find anything that fits. I wish I were a good seamstress, but I am not.
I still shop at resale shops once in a while, can often find some real gems.

The saleswoman in Macy's suggested the teen department. The clothes do fit me, but the shorts are SO short! And sparkles and beads that horrify me when worn by the teens themselves. Alas, the size solution isn't necessarily the style solution for a 60+ grandma.

Wow, Nell, being too small for the stores is an interesting problem, and I hope you can find a store that can help. I hated the days of ordering out of catalogs because stores either didn't cater to my large size, or they had trendy clothes that exposed more flesh than I wanted to bare. Now I love trying on clothes. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I don't know how "odd" it is anymore, but I just got back from Gap looking for jeans shorts, and nothing fits. I wear the size 0 jeans, but the 00 shorts fall off of me. Vanity sizing may make some people feel good, but it sure is a pain to be sized out of stores. No wonder Nordstrom makes money. It's the only place small people can be sure of a fit.

I got that at work. One of the female bosses took me aside to ask if everything was okay. No one wanted to comment on what was wonderful for me if the reason for the weight loss was illness.

Kevin, that is so true! One of the wonderful things about being at goal for a long time is that there are so few people who knew me fat. I still get the "Wow you are so thin" at school reunions, but that's about it. When I added the menopause 10, it was the other way around: Have you gained weight? Even though I was still way under my highest weight. It's all in what they are used to seeing.

I think we've all had comments from friends or acquaintences asking if we'd been sick or lost too much weight. Thursday I ran a large 3.5 mile race, and got to talk to several people I didn't know. The major topic of conversation was run time, and I had a big improvement to talk about.

The interesting thing is that the younger runners who just met me didn't think I was too thin. The more typical comment was along the lines of, "I couldn't tell you used to weigh more." This type of comment would be prompted by my explanation that much of my improved time was to carrying less weight around.

It was interesting to get a different perspective, from people seeing me for the first time instead of remembering how I used to be.

Believer or not, one of the places you might try shopping is an upscale resale shop. I got a beautiful three piece silk suit... jacket, trousers and skirt for $60. A friend who knew about such things looked at the label and said it was at least a $400 suit.
I have a friend who shops exclusively at resale shops and she finds amazing stuff.

I read an article on clothing designers. I have the same problem, and I am asking friends for advice on where they buy their clothes. Someone has mentioned Talbot's as a start, but the clothes are a little expensive. I am maintaining my weight, and I really think it is up to the designers. I guess they want women to feel good no matter what their weight is. I am a size 8. When it comes to a skirt, I am a size 6.

MNJONES2 and NELLJONES, are you related?

I like to complain about the terrible sizing disparity in women's clothing, but deep down I'm just tickled pink that I can go into stores and try on clothes and find things that fit! MNJONES, I'm a pear shape, so I kinda do what you do...look for a fitted top and something flared on the bottom. The skirt and sweater I bought last weekend are just that, and I can't wait to wear them to work.

Even the men have to be careful. I bought some 34" inseam pants for one of my kids and they were short. I measured the pants....and they were 33". I went to the store with a tape measure and all of them were a little different. Exhausting as trying on clothes can be you have to try it all on. No wonder girls like to wear loose blouses that look like maternity wear to me. Easier to fit.

I hate women's sizing - I believe it is meant to keep us in stores longer so we will end up buying more. A young man once told me he hated shopping with his girlfriend because she took so long. He could go in, pick up the size and style he wanted by a certain manufacturer and be done in 15 minutes - 30 at the most. When i explained that women's clothing sizes were not standardized he looked at me and said, "well who's dumb a** idea was that? " Answer the manufacturers.

So this is what I have to do - I try on the clothes, if it fits in the thighs for skirts and pants then the waist is too big. I evaluate if I can alter easily - if I can then I may buy it. Dresses I buy usually have a fitted top and a more flared skirt and I dont have to alter them.

I got a lot of good advice on clothing fit and what is attractive by watching several episodes of What NOT to Wear. The clothes I wear now fit well and make me look slimmer. TADA!

As I read some of this thread, tears formed as I saw myself in so many of your comments. I'm new to maintenance and still searching for the right calorie range, but I recognize my body will let me know when I've found it.

I read with interest the comments on clothing sizes. Recently I wrote a blog bemoaning the fact that I don't know what size I am. I have size 14 jeans & size 8 slacks by different makers, both bought at Macy's and which fit well. My size 8 dresses from Talbot's are perfect, but the size 8s at Talbot's Outlet are too big in the shoulders and too slim in the hips. I thought 8 was my size till I went to Orvis, which normally runs large, and bought a size 6 skirt and blouse. THEN I went to Ann Taylor this weekend and walked out with a size 4 skirt & a sweater in XS. C'mon people! I weigh almost 145 freakin' pounds! Size 4...really?

As I have been losing weight, I have been also tracking my BMI. Now that I am at my goal, according to the BMI categories, I am no longer considered "overweight". NO LONGER OVERWEIGHT! I am a NORMAL 'weighted' person -- changing how I "see" myself will take some work/getting used to. A new me :)

I have the same problem. Kohl's doesn't sell anything small enough for me. Nor does Macy's or JCPenney. I have to buy my jeans at GAP (they have everything), and any other fitted clothing at Nordstrom. Nordstrom can fit anyone, but you pay for it. It's the price of being thin, and I'm happy to pay it.

Here's another one - I recently sent an e-mail to Costco asking them to PLEASE carry clothing items in Extra-Small. They had some lovely twinsets this season, and the size Smalls were HUGE on me. I'm now average-small I think, but not THAT small. Where do the truly petite people shop - the Childrens' department, maybe? Though, I suppose this is a GOOD problem to have:)

I still go in the Plus Size clothing store at the mall occasionally out of habit and realize that I can't wear any of their clothes. I also see my reflection in the windows as I run by buildings and literally look over to see how the skinny girl running past me in my reflection is, it's me!!

I still know I am a fat person in a skinny body because I always see the stuff I can't eat. My sister never even notices the pastries in the bakery at the grocery store; I absorb every one. I walk right past but always see it. I know where every Dairy Queen is. I haven't been in one in years, but I see them. My sister would have to look them up if she had to go. You know how you can "feel" someone looking at you? I can feel if something good is nearby. I never even pause in my steps but I am vividly aware of the presence of food. I've been at goal for decades and it has never lessened. Good thing is I never get in a debate with myself over whether or not to "stop in". I will always lose that debate if it starts.

I know that feeling.... when somebody says something about my size, I want to say... but you don't get it...However, after almost 5 years at goal, I am beginning to believe this is who I am. A healthy person who eats good food in reasonable amounts and is diligent about physical activity.
Yesterday, stopped by the school I retired from 4 years ago... was in yoga clothes cause I had just taught a class and someone called me "skin and bones." ME????

Got another one. This weekend I met the wife of one of my husband's friends. They are both quite heavy. I was talking to her and mentioned, "Mr. Naturally Skinny" (my husband) and realized as it came out of my mouth that for all she knew, I was "Mrs. Naturally Skinny". I did not shout, "I'm one of you! I'm a fat person in a hard fought disguise!" but I thought it. emoticon

I used to work for the textile and apparel industry, and they are very upfront about the concept of vanity selling. Too many women look for the number and whatever makes them feel better will make them buy. A business is in business to sell and make money. It just makes it hard for those of us who think there are really only two sizes: fits and doesn't fit.

If you want to know "real" sizes, look at the sizing on sewing patterns. They haven't changed in 50 years. I wear a 10 when sewing and a 0 at the Gap. Go figure.

It's marketing to vanity. I'm noticing that premium brands (at least in the US) tend to be sized bigger, so you can be a smaller size if you pay for it. That clears up my mystery of how women on the makeover shows that are taller and heavier than I am come out wearing supposedly miniscule sizes. I feel like my "real" dress/jacket size is 8 and I've lately bought a 6 and a 4. Being a hip-less wonder ("real" pants size 2) I'm actually having a time finding women's pants and skirts in stores like Nordstrom's and Macy's. You jump down to cheap junior clothes (think Forever 21 or H&M) and suddenly you feel gargantuan again.

I am in a play right now with our community theatre. I am wearing a dress that was actually made in the 40's - it is a good fit and the size is 16!!! I have never worn a 14 in my life, but it is fun to see how the sizes have changed. I wear a 6-8 right now.

I always love to see people wearing jeans with the size patch on the OUTSIDE of the waistband! Long ago I learned to clip that thing off. I write the size and year on the inside pocket with a marker. As the years have gone by, the "sizes" have gotten smaller yet the sizes are the same.

As far as I can tell, I came down two sizes. I do a lot of online shopping, so it's been hard to zero in on just which sizes from which retailer are right for me. In one I'm a 4 or an XS!! It can't be that I have lost that much weight. And like the rest of you, I have "old" size 8s that I can now get back into. Wonder why we can't have size consistency in the world of women's clothing? Has this trend in clothing sizes tracked along with the trend of bigger portions and fast food sandwiches? Do the manufacturers really think we are so stupid as to not notice the super-sizing of our sizes? There is probably a study there, somewhere.

The Dave Barry thing was hilarious, by the way. So were some of the other items on that page. I had seen some of them before, but it's always fun to giggle over them again.

Started at 138, aiming for 125. Got there, and 120 seemed possible. Got THERE, and 118 seemed possible. Got THERE, and 115 seemed possible. And that's where I want to stay. Maintain, maintain, maintain.

Gap and everyone else changes their sizes every year. I have some Gap 4s, 2,s, 1s, 0, and 00s, from over the years, and they all fit me exactly the same. I don't know what will come next....negative sizes?? For the same body dimensions? I really don't care what they call the size as long as it fits. I hate having to pull up jeans every couple of minutes.

Here's another size-inflation one: Getting used to bringing a smaller size into the dressing room, "just in case". I knew when I looked at that ("I always wear...") size 8 that it was going to be big. Tried the 6 first and it was plenty big. Nice after all those years of the humiliation of having to go up a size (or two) from my first guess in fitted dresses. emoticon

My doctor's office called make a wellness appointment that Medicare pays for. All during the appointment the nurse kept looking at the computer screen and then at me. She finally said, "You don't look old enough to quality for Medicare." BTW, I qualified 2 years ago.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

I went to get a metabolic assessment last week. My company medical center is offering them for free. They measured me before hand and I found out that I'm 5'4" instead of 5'5" like I've been telling myself for the last 25 years. What a rude awakening? Even though I've taken up walking and I average about 3 1/2 miles a day I still have a "slower than average metabolism" according to them. It wasn't a fun appointment.
