Believe it or not, I didn't have a knee replacement (I think they have a faster recovery). I had something called a high tibeal osteotomy, opening wedge. The surgeon sawed open my tibia (from the "inside of my leg" meaning the part that's near the other leg), opened it 12mm, and held it in place with a plate and screws. So I've been regrowing new bone since October 13th.

The end goal of this is much like a knee replacement, except that since I was built funny and wearing out the inside of my knee, this fix means I will no longer be wearing out the inside of my knee and is more a forever fix than a knee replacement.

At my PT today, my physical therapist asked if I'd ever played tennis or other impact sports and I said, no, never, that I've had knee pain my WHOLE life. So now I have a chance at a future of playing tennis if I want, jogging if I want... or sitting on the couch, if I want, rather than because I hurt.

And it's been successful, so far! :)

WTG! Crunches still hurt me a lot - but I keep trying.

Lunges are not far behind the crunches *sigh*

P T L, a long recovery is still a recovery SARBAH77!

I think you are being very smart indeed! Jogging isn't as important - besides, with knee replacements you are not ever supposed to jog again.

I read here at SparkPeople that Speed Walking burns more calories than jogging and is easier on the body. Like a win-win situation!

I can't jog but I am thankful I can walk! I am trying to teach myself how to speed walk. Not as easy as it sounded.

**edit: I forgot! I am making progress at my father's house! I found a cleaner for the outside of the mobile home and I have cleaned much of the inside this past weekend! He is a happy camper and I feel like I have accomplished my goal!

Well, I had another appointment with my surgeon yesterday and he said I can expect to recover for a year. I'll need to change my goals, slightly, and scale them back a little, but that's okay. I mean, I've got walking sticks for some short hikes! I just think I'll push off thinking about jogging until 2011 - how's that for some long term planning?!

Y'all have some really great goals for 2010!

I even went over to my Dad's house today to see if one of my "green cleaners" would wash off the "green mold" we get down here and it does! So I made a start on his door & porch railing! A small, tiny start - but a start!

Well, the number 1 item on my to do list is to keep recovering from surgery.

This surgery was done to give me a better chance to live life pain-free. So first I need to learn to walk again. then I want to take our 10th anniversary trip in June without pain, as we walk around parts of Europe. I want to go back to Sleeping Bear Dunes and walk without pain. I hope I recover enough to try jogging.

That's my big one. Hopefully I'm off crutches on January 4!

Focus on maintenance and work in more running.

I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see.

Main goal is to stay on track and maintain the healthy weight and lifestyle.
Exercise goal is to complete the last leg of the Santiago de Compostella pilgrimage, was hoping to do so in May but it will have to be put back to September due to unforeseen circumstances. This keeps me motivated to exercise.

Great question - I do make resolutions - or I should say, 1 resolution. Last year it was to deal with mail after I opened it, this year it will be to get up from my desk every hour, walk to the breakroom, get a glass of water and walk back to my desk (killing 2 birds with 1 stone).
AND I'm making plans.
Christmas is @ our house next year, which is huge for us - the first time the clan will visit and a perfect opportunity to finish work inside and out.

I'd like to do some painting in the house.

And this summer I'd like to keep up with the weeding. It doesn't take long to get behind, then the task seems overwhelming and I tell myself that NEXT year the garden will look good. Maybe this year.

Mine are the same as last year: to maintain my weight and increase with weight training and toning, and to do more Bible study and reflection. A specific goal I have is to complete the January Boot camp. I have started on two or three boot camps and always travel in the middle and never finish because you need an internet connection to complete the exercises. I hope to finish this one for 28 days!

I plan to step it up with my exercise and do another round of P90X. Like you, I don't do 'resolutions' but make goals (I actually put that in my blog just today, lol). I would like to be more organized overall and continue to learn all I can about health and nutrition.

I know it's a little early, but thought I would ask and let you all know, what I'm planning. I never make
" NEW YEAR " Resolutions. But I ALWAYS have goals or
plans. I will (God Willing) continue with my healthy
life style, and my daily exercise routine.
I plan on starting my flowers and herb seeds in Feb.
Painting a couple of Bedrooms, adding new curtains and Drapes. Having an open house gathering in mid
January to welcome in the new year. Those are just a few of the things that are on my TO-DO LIST.
Tell us what is on yours.
Love, Hugs and blessings to all of you.
Nancy M.
