I like this thread!

Your last question . . . what motivates you most when trying to lose weight?

#1 - the bathroom mirror

Like you Linda, at the beginning it was the scale but not now. I can be losing inches and not pounds so it's the mirror and how my clothes fit that influence me the most!

Wow-that's terrific! SPeaking of things close captioned, I discovered Beachbody captions all their exercise dvds! I have P90x and was thrilled to see captions! :-)

So we have what, just two people on this team?? or just two on this topic? ;-) And I might be sort of neighbors with Linda as I'm in the Wichita area.

Interestingly enough, a motivating thing for me has been my new Wii Fit Plus game - it's captioned! and at first I was upset that it would only plug in a 33 pound weight loss (when I have 100+ to go), but now I'm about "halfway" to my "goal" and I'm like wow! When I reach that goal, I'll be about 1/4 of the way to my "real" goal, and can reset the goal on the Wii fitness program. (I'm also on the Wii Fit Plus SparkTeam).

Matthew 6:33-34
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

I'd have to go with boosted energy, too! It's amazing what weight loss and exercising can do for one's energy level!

What motivates you most when trying to lose weight?

1. The bathroom mirror.

2. The scale.

3. Compliments from others.

4. Boosted energy.

5. The challenge of reaching a goal.

When I first answered this poll way back there in 2008, I answered the scale. Today, I answered Boosted energy. What a difference a couple of years can make!!

For me, the best part is keeping the kitchen from getting too hot! I also love the way food tastes when its been grilled. I'm so glad DH loves to grill! :-)

What's the best part about grilling out?

1.Getting out of the kitchen.

2.The flavor of the food.

3.Spending time outdoors.

4.Getting family and friends together.

5.Nothing- I'm not a fan of grilling out.

6.Something else not listed here.

I think #4! We just had a huge family/friend BBQ this past weekend and really enjoyed visiting with everyone!

How do you keep yourself motivated?

1. I have someone who pushes me.

2. Lots of positive self-talk.

3. I hang motivational pictures.

4. I read a lot of motivating things.

Mostly #4! I read a lot of motivational materials plus I do self-talk some too! It's putting all those thoughts into practice that takes an effort!!

We probably do it about 0 to 1 time a week. We eat at the table or outside on our deck most of the time. It's nice to sit and chat with each other. :-)

On average, how many times per week do you eat dinner while watching TV?

A. 0

B. 1

C. 2

D. 3

E. 4

F. 5

G. 6

H. 7

I voted for E. (4) for an average. I'm really bad about this, as when I get home from work, my daughter and granddaughter have already eaten dinner. So I usually fix my plate and eat while watching the news. Another habit that needs to be broken! What about you??

Do you believe that eating while distracted can affect what and how much you eat?

1. Yes

2. No

3. Not sure / It depends

Yes! I've noticed if I'm eating out with others and talking/visiting I tend to not eat much. I've also noticed if I'm eating at home, especially in front of the TV or computer I eat too much! What about you????

I used to be an evening exerciser but changed to a morning person. The reason being so I wouldn't have the guilty feeling of "you still have to do it" hanging over my head all day. I have taken on an additional walk : 1 sometime during the day & another after dinner.

So I will say morning since that is when I do the most.

This or That: Morning or Evening Exercise?

1. Morning

2. Evening

3. Other

I'll have to go with other for now but hope to soon get in a habit of Morning. I currently do the strength in the a.m. and the cardio (walking) on my lunch break. Now that the weather is better hope to do walking in the morning & evenings.

I'll have to go with #3. Stress has not played a big part in my life up until now & it keeps me busy. Due to being busy, I don't have time to eat, therefore don't overeat, so no weight gain. But I'm sure there are other ways to be stressed out & means to handle it which where one would rely on eating.

Do you think stress causes weight gain?

1. Definitely! It has for me and/or people I know.

2. Probably, but probably depends on other factors, too.

3. No way! It's what you DO when you're stressed, not the stress itself.

4. Not sure.

I'll go with #2! Think it depends on the person and how they handle the stress. I tend to eat when I'm stressed while I have friends who do not eat at all when stressed.

Which "diet" dilemma do you usually struggle with?

1. Failing on the weekends.

2. Making exercise excuses.

3. Eating nutrient-poor calories.

4. Starving during the day & overeating at night.

5. Going off my diet for special occasions.

6. None- I've transitioned from dieting to a healthy lifestyle.

Mine would be #2! I simply do not make the time for daily exercise. It is on my daily "to do list" but for one reason or another usually gets pushed down the list until time is up for the day!

When it is something I've never done before which is demanding or as Linda says one that "requires a lot of lifting, bending, etc." I will count it as cardio "Heavy Cleaning". So I go choice #3 "Sometimes/Depends".

Yes, when I am tracking.
Laundry, folding clothes, vacuuming, mopping, carrying boxes to the basement are all considered heavy house work.

Do you count house cleaning as a workout?

1. Yes, it's physically demanding!

2. No, it's not the same as exercise.

3. Sometimes / It depends.

I think "Sometimes/It Depends. I wear a pedometer daily so the steps are counted. If it's really "Heavy Cleaning" that requires a lot of lifting, bending, etc. Then I'll count it as cardio exercise.
