Even though I love my wine, I just can't have it during the week. While I was losing I probably only had wine once or twice/week. Now I tend to have it F, Sat. and Sunday. I work out pretty aggressively on Friday and Sat so that helps with the extra calories. And if I'm going to drink then I can't eat with abandon.

I've always enjoyed going out with friends and having a few drinks. Not every weekend but definitely every few months. What I've noticed is that with the drinks, I eat a lot too and it takes a week to get myself back to where I was before that night going out.

My husband and I use to drink every weekend until he got very ill. He almost died from complications with his liver function. We stopped drinking alcohol and he is doing much better. Now we drink mostly water. I also decided to cut out caffeinated drinks.

Yes, the tea counts. All your liquids, including the liquid in foods, count in your total. There's been controversy over whether dehydrating liquids count in your total - caffeinated drinks - and I believe they do count. Of course it's hard to know how to count the liquid content of your food, but I believe the "8 glasses a day" is too high anyway.

(See my blog "Tap or bottled? Neither" But, you can see my weight ticker is not good - and so many swear by their 8 cups a day. Still, you can read some expert opinion on the 8 a day rule - the links in the blog do work. The link I tried putting here didn't work, but if you click "blogs" at the top of my page, it's at the bottom of the page you get.)

(I never will completely give up pizza, and that means pizza with a beer in a frozen mug.)

I plan on cutting down on my drinking but I know I can't cut it out entirely! I love good beer. When I am out with my friends I usually have 2-3 beers, a couple of times a week, so I plan on just having 1 in a sitting unless it's a special occasion. That will still cut out calories without depriving myself. And I know drinking can end up with bad consequences for some people, but to say that drinking is a good way to end up with STDs and unwanted kids is a bit unfair. That can happen whether or not you drink. It can also not happen at all if you drink.

It depends some days I'd rather eat a huge salad and feel like I've pigged out when it was mostly lettuce. And then other days I'm stressed and don't have much time for lunch and a Trump Network protein shake just fits the bill. It all depends. I'm not a big breakfast person but I know I need to start my day right so I'm trying to eat a real breakfast lately.

I drink very rarely and only as an accessory to an excellent gourmet meal. Since I'm watching my weight, that is pretty rare. It is always a wine that matches the food. The alcohol has to enhance the dining experience and not be the experience. When you're trying to lose, calories are expensive, so you've got to spend them wisely.

If your someone that drinks on a daily or even weekly bases it is recommended that you alternate one drink to one glass of water. You drink less calories, save some money and your a little less hung over the next day emoticon Enjoy!

I just recently joined SP and this team. While I'm not a big drinker I have always enjoyed a good glass of wine with dinner. Also DH and I have tried to maintain a "Friday night date night" troughout most of our 41yrs married and I admit I've been known to have up to 4-5 on a fun night. But it definately affects my weight loss as well as increases cravings for me. I guess it goes along with the sugar metabolism problems, and getting older. So I'm trying to have just 1 or 2 glasses on Friday night, none the rest of the week. Last night was a my daughter's 41st b'day celebration, so one glass of wine. So better, but not quite there yet.

I understand where you're coming from. In Manhattan, we mostly hang out at bars and you don't want to be the only one not drinking. Try to limit yourself to a couple of drinks per night, spread out and only a couple of times per week. Plus, I think there are some low calorie vodka drinks available. Drinking is a social event so if you remind yourself you're there to have fun with friends and not to get drunk you can slow down. My biggest problem with alcohol is that it convinces me that I should hit a diner at 3am. Not good. If you can get those things under control than drinking won't be such a big issue.

I'm with everything in moderation.I enjoy a glass or two of wine with dinner or a sam adams on the weekends.I do find however that if i am not carefull i will end up eating alot more with alcohol then with water as my beverage with meals. Therefore i try to have only a few days a weak of drinking one or two glasses of wine.I also track it on my nutrional tracker to check my over all calories.

I have made a promise to myself to never go on a "diet" again. So I feel that (almost)everything in moderation - a few drinks once in a while is not going to break the bank! (And then of course after saying this I am usually the one to refrain from drinking!)

I feel the same way you do Karen. If I am going to have extra calories I would much rather it be in the form of a special dinner out or my favorite ice cream stand. Although there are times when I know I'm going to be drinkning and I plan ahead for it by making sure it will fit in my caloric plan for the day.

I think anything in moderation is okay. I won't be binge drinking anytime soon, but having a drink now and then is like allowing yourself a candy bar every now and then. Not good for you if it's all you are doing, but it's okay to treat yourself once in a while!

Aside from the lost calories, alcohol inhibits weight loss by altering the way fat is absorbed... Any way you spin it, it's bad for you.

This is coming from an overweight Irish-Italian who loves his wine and beer... I know I need to stay away from them but it's so damn hard. =)

Wow you all have an interesting take on the subject. I have to admit I never drank till I was 45 and my children left for college. Life changed and routines changed. Now I like my martini's but I'm trying to keep it in moderation. Problem or excuses is Hubby, business, economy, life's stresses. But along with everything else I am working on it.

I rarely used to drink but since I starting my diet/exercise program I enjoy a 1/2 glass of red wine before dinner. It's only 100 calories and I enjoy it.

wow everyone's take on the subject is great and informative. some people drink beer or wine to get nice, i on the other hand just enjoy the taste of both of them. i have lost weight while drinking but as one team member said moderation is key. however i will admit, that when i stopped drinking for about 2 months i lost a lot of weight. so i guess each of us just has to decide what is right for us... good luck to all!

I used to be a big drinker before school took over my life. It's tough because my local hangout is a bar. It's where all my friends are so to avoid the bar is to avoid my friends. Not happening. I usually visit the bar twice a month. Wine tasting is also soemthing me and my mother do about once a month. We both really enjoy the time together. I figire 3 times a month isn't so bad. I watch what I eat on those days and usually stay within calorie range.

We were talking to someone and they told us about chocolate beer. I do like chocolate but not beer so much. I decided I wanted to try the chocolate beer so DH and I stopped and got a 6 pack of it. It didn't even taste like chocolate and was very heavy. I had all I could do to drink one bottle. I may take it to our son's when we go for Lexie's birthday party Sunday. He may like it.

I like to drink. I used to be a big drinker and gained a lot of weight because of it... I don't have any unwanted children or stds by the way. However drinking like there is no tomorrow is past my days. I have too much going on too waste my time and money on that. I still like to drink on special occasions and like to go to the bar with my friends once a week. I know is a waste of my calories, but I'm old enough to be accountable for my calories.

I have to agree. I having a beer or two once in a while isn't going to kill a diet. I had to give up coffee, corn (in all shape and sizes), dairy etc a few years ago. So a glass of wine at dinner, a walk to the VFW for a beer (and we always walk there) is all ok. I can't remember being drunk in about 30 years. And before that it was only once and boy I didn't like it.

Yes I should eat my calories but chocolate or a beer give me a beer. Many many people can have a drink or two and be polite and nice. Those that can't are a different story. But many people over do on many things whether its gambling, drinking, eating, not eating, shopping, smoking or what ever Everything in moderation.

You just need to plan for those calories.

I enjoy beer in moderation. I know it is empty calories and I'd be better off 'eating' my calories. But I look at it this way, in 9/02 I gave up smoking due to health problems- I HAD to, it was not an option, unless I wanted to be carrying around an oxygen tank by age 40. And if I want to enjoy a beer now and then I certaintly don't feel guilty about it.
And not to knock ckelly but I have certainly NEVER come close to getting a std or having any unwanted children due to my drinking! I consider myself a very responsible drinker- we either have a cocktail or two at home OR if we do go out my hubby and I take turns being the designated driver. I also think there are plenty of people out there who are not obnoxious drunks. Of course there are many who are- but I think by implying that all people who drink are obnoxious idiots is a pretty big generalization.
My hubby and I go to the local Veterans Club and it is VERY mellow in there. If you swear- you have to put $ in a jar, and if you are obnoxious or fighting you get kicked out. I have never seen anyone kicked out in 4 years.
Just my 2 cents!

I used to drink a lot in college too...it definitely contributed to the weight gain. Now, when I go out, I either drink a cranberry and vodka (depending on the place I might choose a diet cranberry-some cranberry juices are high in sugar) or a small glass of red wine.

I admit though, I almost never drink anymore. My boyfriend jokes that I'm boring.

I thought drinking was great until around the time I turned 19. it's a waste of money, time, and a good way to end up with stds and unwanted kids.

my drink of choice is coffee, and if I'm going to drink alcohol its either something in my coffee (kaluha, amoretto, and bailys are excellent together in coffee) or its one glass of wine.

besides that, I know far too many alcoholics and watch them waste their self away, moderation is key, but these people started out in moderation too. And drunk people are obnoxious, not funny, and always use being drunk as an excuse for everything.

I honestly have more fun sitting with my friends drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes(which I do not promote in any way) and talking about any and everything than I have any time recently (within the past few years) in a bar or drunk.

maybe I started drinking too early and ruined it for myself, but go into a bar sober and watch the idiots run rampant and it'll hinder your desire to join them, at least it does mine, because they're idiots, and I'd like to not be one of them.

but enough of my anti alcohol rant, I could go on for hours.

I use to be a BIG drinker, I think that's how I gained so much weight in such a little time (gained 40lbs in 1yr). I just started a new and MUCH more stressful sales job and many of my co-workers went out for happy hour right after work at least 2-3times a week and i'm not even counting my drinking on the weekend, and on top of that I was bartending part time......so you can imagine! I've managed to stop drinking totally, i feel good. No cravings for alcohol or anything. I started doing old hobbies I did before I became of legal drinking age, like reading, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, crusing the internet, and I even bought a couple of plants to take care of and watch grow!

Good luck!

I have a glass of wine several times a week. Actually I eat less when I have the wine since I tend to linger over it taking small sips. I wish I could do that with food!

I know that having a diet where I never have alcohol is just not realistic for me. My biggy is if I drink I usually eat more. So my plan is always have one but have water with it.

My 85 year old father wants a beer at bowling on Monday nights with me. I am going to have that beer. I plan for it. I have two glasses of water to "off set" the beer.

I just think all things in moderation are ok. I would never say I will never have white flour or sugar again but I do try to limit both of those items. I just plan for things.

I do hate to drink my calories. Whether that is a beer or an orange juice. I would rather eat my calories.

Select where and when carefully. But if this is a plan for life not for the short run. You need to plan for your life.

My drink of choice lately after I drink my daily 8 glasses of water is a can of diet pepsi vanilla. Occasionally when I'm on a Red Hat outing with my Red Hat friends I will drink some wine. That's about twice a year. Sometimes when we go to Atlantic City DH and I will go to karaoke and I will drink a Hurricane. Love them - they have a lot of fruit juice in them.

Drinking ANYTHING beyond water seems to me a waste of calories and a degradation of good ol' Adam's Ale...you just can't improve on Mother Nature! :-)

Not that I'm anti-alcohol, I just want to be able to sink my teeth into my calories...lol

Here's my take on drinking. Two years ago I weighed less and drank at least 4 glasses of wine every night. Then Hubby & I quit.Unfortunately he had a problem and had to stop drinking. We haven't had alcohol in our home in 23 months.I drink on occasion, but the truth is I don't miss it and when I do have a drinkor two it really increases my appetite. So I say,"drink water and lots of it!"

I have never been a drinker - it makes me thirsty! lol
My drink of choice these days is water. Plain for the most part, but sometimes I'll use lemon juice to add flavor.

I always ask people to think of drinking in this way - if you are going to have extra calories, wouldn't you want it to be food? Drinking can really hurt your diet and you are making a good choice to abstain - even if it is until you reach goal. As we all know moderation is key, a drink once in awhile is okay.

When dieting and already having to restrict food etc being able to make the choice between drinking and having a nice cheat meal is great and I hope that most people would chose a cheat meal.

I still have a glass of wine with dinner now and then, or a shot in my after dinner coffee, but I plan for it ahead of time so I stay within my caloric range. In the summer I make a lightened up version of sangria for when we have cook outs with company.

Managing my weight was so much easier before I became of drinking age! I am not a crazy drinker, I just really enjoy a nice cold beer here and there on the weekends. It's my way to relieve the week-long stress.

But now I am going to commit myself to finding a better way to get rid of stress. Instead of a beer it should be a walk. Either that or a healthy snack. I think I can make better progress in my journey without alcohol.

Is anyone else looking for either healthier options or eliminating alcohol for the time being? Just curious! No matter what, I'm sure you'll keep on track.
