Here's a video of me doing Raks al Asaya (Cane Dance): http://youtu.be/HMDjHWRP42w

And one of my favorite dancers right now is Amani Jabril from Atlanta:
This is a video of her doing her VERY fierce, Lebanese Debke-influenced cane dance:
http://youtu.be/aBoKGmBxfqM

I get to study this style of cane dancing with her in November and can't wait!

This is my most-recent performance, December 11, 2010, after a 3-year hiatus. Thanks for watching!

My favorite dancer of all-time is, without question, the incomparable Ms. Suhaila Salimpour. Here's a video bio I made in her honor a few years ago! =)

Hands down Isidora Bushkovski, who to me just radiates joy in her dance, as well as beauty.

If you haven't seen her dance, you really should.

I was at a show last night - local performers, not quite so local, and featuring Rachel Brice.

Anyways, from the "not quite so local" category, comes Rosanna McGuire (from Toronto - she does classes there and has a workshop coming up). She was pretty much up there with Rachel Brice in my opinion. I guess she recently came back from spending 2 years in San Francisco.

The first video starts off off center but gets better. If you want to see two completely different facets of her dance, watch the 2nd and 3rd videos.

I've lost about 35lbs and gone from slightly over "obese" by BMI to just into "healthy"!

And I can now run for over 5k!

I love hearing about workshops. It's great to meet other dancers and see different styles.

We're having workshops here in Chicago next weekend with Donna Diva and Armani from Atlanta.

Plus, a hafla!

Should be a fun and exhausting weekend!

Our troupe will be performing a cymbals dance and a veil dance.

Orit is terrific. I got her 3 dvds from the Canada workshop and I'm SOOOO glad I did, because even though the 2 workshop dvds are in Hebrew, she teaches you a LOT. I guess this proves that dance is a universal language :) LOL.

Where is Aziza having her? West coast?

So I discovered this dancer randomly on YouTube when I was searching for examples of Taqsim/Taxim, and now I'm "in love". And it looks like I'm not the only one - Aziza herself is bringing her here from Israel for her first workshop in the US ever in August.

How I wish I could go! Maybe the baby will be weaned by then :)

Anyway, her name is Orit Maftsir and here is one of many videos of her on YouTube:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=iHDUlP4CFsU

It's a very naturalistic authentic Arabic style, and I just love her personality. It's not about big "tricks" and props, but about really feeling the music.

OK, i will stop gushing now :)

I've got two really amazing silk veils that I LOVE which were hand-pained by Gypsy de Rose (my "dance-mommy," basically xD) and they flow beautifully and both have a nice (but different) weight and I'm very emotionally attached to them, but I have yet to 'commit to' a nice chiffon one... There's a couple I've played with that I liked though, and I think I might need one after seeing that video ^^

Thanks! I've been rediscovering chiffon veils recently. They have an ethereal feel that goes well with the mood of the song.

Here's a video taken of me in January.

It's an original choreography I have been teaching to my students this past session.

The performance benefitted the Hopes and Dreams foundation in Clayton NC:

You looked FANTASTIC, congrats. If you've only been dancing a year you must be a natural because you pulled it off beautifully. You could've said you'd been dancing for 6-7 years and I would've bought it. Tribal is a lot harder than it looks... Love the music too. I do agree with the comment about the hands- I noticed that too. My right arm always goes dead when I dance :/ it's awful... but I can laugh at it too. Gets that dead-fish thing.
Do you ever do improv? I can't learn choreography to save my life- makes me nervous and I get sidetracked with what I 'feel' in the music too much xD I admire people who can execute a choreography and still have emotion in it

Fav dancer? There's so many wonderful dancers to choose from, how could you have a favorite? Haha... Some of my favorites are the lovely Rachel Brice (how can you NOT love her? *sigh*), Isadora (and her Tejedora troupe), and Nadira (have to, she's from my neck of the woods and she's SOO sweet). Other local dancers (Seattle) I love are Dinah, Setsuna, Gigi Ghoulhan, Suzanna, and Dahlia. Dahlia has given me tons of great advice and she's honest and manages to give genuinely constructive, motivational criticism. *love* her. And my all-time fav drummer is George Sadak (of MB Orchestra). He hosts some awesome parties too ;) lol.
Is anyone going to Seattle events Medfest, Folklife, or The Bite this summer??? And there's an event called the Northern Lights Festival in Wisconsin I want to attend in September-- anyone going to that? Just curious =)

Thank you Amandaraqs. Oddly enough the in synch thing just kind of happens for us. That is one of the main compliments we get. I think it really helps having people dance together that have a similar range of motion. I didn't notice her looking at me in the video, but I did notice that in some of the pictures. I can't wait to do it again! I am trying to pick out a song for my solo piece right now. Which is tough because there are so many option.

Thanks again,
Ashley.

Thanks for the advice Nandini, I truly appreciate it. Yes it does make sense, and after rewatching it I see what you mean. The hands could be a little more engaged during those particular moves, it would probably create a sharper image. My hands need work in general, but there is only one true cure for that...more dancing!

Thanks again for the tips,
Ashley.

Nicely done! Huzzah! Finishing two days before sounds like our groups.

Only one little critique - and it's just a pet peeve of mine - when the arms are hanging down at your sides, still pay attention to your hands. I know that the just danging is the norm for that particular posture, but I guess too many years of twirlng blew that one for me since there was always an emphasis on what the free hand was doing. Does that make any kind of sense??? You've actually given me a really good discussion question for the group - thanks!

And, once again - lovely job!

Alright here goes nothing :)

A little background. First of all, I am the one on the right (at the beginning). Secondly, keep in mind that I have been dancing for less than a year, and that I am dancing with my dance instructor (and now troupe member). Lastly, keep in mind that it was our first time performing together and only my fourth time performing ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXEDDEkR5
bU

I was a little nervous as we only finished choreographing the dance two days before, because we are both students and it was during the end of term. I think that for a first duet it is pretty good. I certainly had a lot of fun, and this experience has severely heightened my passion for bellydance. I am happy with it, and glad it was recorded because I have some ideas of what I need to work on. If you have any comments they are appreciated, but please post them here.

Thanks, Ashley.

It did - and did very nicely, I might add. Lovely, lovely dancer. Thanks so much for putting it up.

How awesome....love it. Looks like you and your hubby have fun!!!

Heart beat as one
To the rhythm of the drum
Heart and soul may we come
Together
Fearless and spirited
Shameless and beautiful
With purpose and inner strength
Dance until you live again

Hi all, there are two short snippets of me performing on YouTube, shot by an audience member, so not professional quality.

Me and my hubby improving:

My students and I performing a choreography I had written:

I don't know how to convert the stuff I have on DVD to MPEG so I can upload, so this will have to do for now.

That was great - but, what color was the costume??? I'm dying to know! We have the same lighting issues at shows.

First performance? I'm impressed!

First I'm going to apologize for the quality, then post the YouTube link. We have some issues with security after some pics were stolen and used for nefarious purposes. To put the hafla cuts up, I had to squish them and really mess with the clarity as well as use only partial snippets. The poi videos and the pieces from the Choreography Project competitions are better.

Another stinky quality - but it's a cute number. Des taught it to us recently. The other two dancers here are so sweet. Serena (the brown hair) is recovering from having the ACL in her knee replaced. Long recovery!

Topic created to provide space for those who have examples of their own dance posted somewhere, have a particular dancer we should all see, or just find a really cool video.
