Dayle - anything that makes you feel pretty is worth it! Still ticks me off that our cable company dropped the station.

I'm really anxious to hear about Revelations. Tell me how Kami is.

Not a belly dance one, but I'm really excited that my copy of Shiamak's Bollywood Jazz got here today. We had class tonight, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see it most likely.

So this morning I managed to drag myself out of bed at 6:30 am so that I can try out "Shimmy". Let me tell you, it was really early and it took a lot to not just crawl back into bed!

I didn't catch the very beginning of it, so I am assuming that I missed the warm up stretchs, so just jumped in where it was at. I was kind of surprised that it was narrated by a man, but got over that quickly!

The moves where pretty easy to follow which makes me think that it is good for beginners like myself. I'm not sure how much someone with a lot of experience would like it...

All in all it was fun to do and it even made me think to myself "gee I feel pretty!". lol

So I will probably drag myself out of bed again tomorrow morning just before 6am so that I can do it again.

Here is my OP of Meera's 1st DVD in the Dances of India Series "Ancient to Modern":

GET THIS ONE FIRST!!!!!! emoticon i made the happy mistake of ordering the other 2 DVD's first, instead of this one. I'll still keep those 2, but this one is the one I really wanted.

it gives you a brief history of dance in India ...

1. a taste of Bollywood grooves

2. a nice bit of Bhangra fitness

3. AND the beautiful Bharatanatyam (temple dance). this is where she teaches you a few of the beautiful hand poses so familiar to Indo-Asian dancing

Then you can decide to get her other DVD's based on whether or not you like this style or the other.

NOTE*****
The 4th DVD in her series is Bellydance, but I am not interested in her style of bellydance (they give you a Music Video teaser in the Special features).

OK! here's the scoop on Meera's Urban Bhangra Bounce "Dances of India" DVD

the key word in the title is BOUNCE,
OMG! my jiggly parts hurt so badly after one session. What I mean to say is the instruction is great, but my thighs/butt & my besom hurts, and i was even wearing my best sports bra for support!

BUT I MUST SAY, the cardio workout is great! I will definately give this another 3 weeks try before I give my final critique, because I just don't have the bhangra stamina yet.

emoticon whew-wheee! it really is the HIP-HOP of India.

I have 3 lb dumbells. I'm a cheapskate too. As for the bollywood I saw it in a various dance video. It had flamenco, salsa, samba and bellydancing to name a few. I shop on ebay all the time so I will eventually get it.

First off, this isn't a belly dance video. But wait! It'll help improve your dance by helping you build muscle! I know I'm gonna need to build my upper arm strength working with the cane this year.
I've had this video for years. It is my favorite workout video. If you can find the time to do it three times a week, you will notice a difference in how toned and strong you feel.
The video is called Weights II by Francesca Fisher. This is a no frills sort of workout. The set is plain and Francesca isn't one of those annoying perky Barbie doll workout instructors. She insists you drink water between sets. All you really need are a set of 5 lb dumb bells. You can even start with three. If you have any knowledge of weights, you don't need to start out with her first video, Weights I. The video is expensive in my book...the most expensive one I bought (hey, I'm a cheapskate), but it's the most expensive. The first time I did this video, I could barely walk the next day from all the lunges and squats! Added bonus: studies have shown weight training helps stave off osteoporosis, which is a big concern for all of us:D
Here's a link to the video. Occasionally you *might* be able to find it on E-Bay.

I've seen one bollywood dance. I don't know much about it except from which cultures its supposed to come from. I do get my energy from dances as well as kids and exercise. I keep calling my old self the couch potatoe because she wouldn't have bothered doing bellydancing or anything else except eating.

Nandini (et al.), I finally got my Meera Bollywood Dance DVD. It is dance instruction in a workout format, so it really kicks @** if U KWIM ... there was a short warm up chapter, and a short cool down chapter. personally I need more time to warm up and cool down my middle aged body.

I've been studying ME dancing for over 7 years, fast rhythm drum solos, etc. But ... I was outta breath trying to keep up with her after 10 minutes into the 1st combo. emoticon
There is also a Chapter which is called Advanced Routine (duh duhn DUHN! [crazy strange organ music])

Nandini, you (and other dances of India students) may already be familiar with most of these dance moves, so It may come easier for them. Most of the moves in the combo's looked a little herkyjery at first, but then I am used to more lyrical choreography. It'll take me a bit longer to get familiar with a whole new dance vocabulary, and the moves that go with it. But I must remind myself that "THAT IS THE POINT, silly!" I had wanted to incorporate something fresh into my Asian dance repertoire.

Unfortunately, The music she teaches the dance to is very hip hoppy, with a back beat flavor of the subcontinent, so I was a little disappointed in that regard. I was hoping for a more "classical" Bollywood style, not hip hop.

The set was beautiful and helped to amplify the effect of exotic props. I loved the use of pink lotus' and bright yellow marigolds draping the altar piece.

There was a small nugget of delight in the extra features: a VH1 style music video of the instuctor performing in two deliciously ornamented costumes. The crayon "henna" was a turn off though. I bet her makeup artist was in a hurry and had to have something that they could wash off in a hurry (costume change?).

I would give this DVD 3 & 1/2 stars, at least, maybe four.

I had already ordered the next DVD in her Dances of India series, "Ancient to Modern" so maybe that one will satisfy my Cardamom tooth (not a sweet tooth, a savory tooth). wink wink

I wish I could bellydance right now. Its no fun when your leg feels weak. Not to mention my tendonitis is back in my right arm. First insinct of bellydancing wasn't good. Well at least the right dvd's. Neon, I didn't think she would have a good one. Then I looked at other dances. I want to try them too. Hopefully my surgery next tuesday won't be too painful. I live right down the street from the hospital.
Not sure if I'll need crutches, but I will have physical therapy. Plenty of exercise.

I just got a new CD that I absolutely love! I listened to it last night and again this morning. It's called 40 Days and 1001 Nights Bellydance Music for Tamalyn Dallal by the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club of Zanzibar. The music is rich, sounds deliciously traditional, and absolutely beautiful.
This CD is part of Tamalyn's project of living in a bunch of Muslim countries for 40 days each. She also did a film and a book should be published very soon with the same title.
This is great music to dance to; most seems to be medium to slow, but all of it is very, very sumptuous.

Yeah my knee is a little swollen. The doctor gave it a plus 1 on a 0-3 scale, so its not too bad. He said I'll be off for a week and get the stiches out the next week. Kinda bad that I plan it after a baby shower. I bought my world dance videos online and on ebay not all of them though. I didn't really get into bellydancing until I saw the heartbeat of belly dancing with Jenna. She's my favorite. She even shot a pregnancy bellydancing video.

Hopefully the tricky operation goes well. I want to get into bellydancing but only after I heal.

Ross Dress for Less is a chain discount department store, like TJMaxx or Marshall's. They have had a ton of good dance videos over the last year for between $4.99 and $6.99. :-)

Reached my goal November 2009!

Where's that store you mentioned? (or were you talking to AnimeGirl?)

I'm probably going to get it off Amazon. It's about $15 on there, but I have a coupon from when I ordered my Harry Potter book.

I too HAD some of the Veena and Neena videos... however, friends borrowed them and they just never seemed to come back... I'm ok with that though - they were more workout than dance.

Right now the only DVDs I have in my possession are the Jillina Instructional ones. They are ok.

I think I am going to get Jenna's Bellydance Basics and Beyond. I'll probably do better with other videos if I master the basics first. (I'm a dive right into the deep end kinda girl and sometimes I forget that I need to learn to swim first.)

AnimeGirl - I hope everything goes smoothly with your knee! From what I understand, that's a tricky joint to operate on.

I get my bellydancing dvd's elsewhere and from other bellydancers. WorldDance New York has some awesome dvd's and Jenna is one of my favorites. I've got tribal bellydancing and other ones. I've only tried to bellydance a little because my right knee is going to have surgery next month. I can't move like I used to so I can do what I can on bellydancing. The shimmy's aren't exactly easy for me right now.

Yes, the exercise in that video is a little tough on the joints, but I suspect that most bellydancing probably is.

I'm spending some time trying to limber up using a Tai Chi video and a yoga video. Plus I do water exercises at least 3 times weekly. My joints are much, much better than they were when I started exercising in January. They'll get to where I can do the bellydance exercises too.

Build into it!!! That's one of the best things about learning this dance -- getting something that is too hard at the moment, and then realizing later that "wow this is easy -- I remember when I couldn't do that!"

I love moments like that :)

Kiralinn - I will have to pull that one out again and give it another go. I thought it was too difficult to for me and I seem to remember that it was a bit hard on the joints. What did you think?

Maybe I can do a bit more of it now.

Ok, that new video is pretty hard for me. That's ok though. I'll get there with practice. I got through about 5 minutes of it this time.
My son thinks its the best exercise DVD ever made through. Hmmmm...Let's see, he's 12 year old. Wonder why he likes it... emoticon

I finally got a DVD to get me started. I am a drummer and a bellydancer wannabe. So, I got a "Neena and Veena" DVD "Bellydance Fitness for Beginners". I haven't gotten started with it yet, but I hope to get some time to do that this evening.

Absolutely get the Ariella video! I just got it myself and I'm loving it! It's so much fun and a little outside my ATS box.

Oh I forgot the most important parts. The DVD is very well done. She shows several views (front/side/etc) and explains the correct posture as well as the muscle(group) actually doing the work. The instruction is great. She is simply dressed, plain pants and bra top (I think) anyway it doesn't detract or get in the way so you can easily see what she is doing. The set is plain no fuss so also not a distraction.

Ok, there's a short yoga warm-up, a long yoga warm-up and a yoga cool down (35 minutes total yoga)
There's 75 minutes bellydance techniques, 2 3-part sections (drills).
There's 40 minutes of combinations and choreography.
Finally there are at least 2 performances.

So far I've done one 3-part section of drills and the yoga cool down. The combinations are too tough for me at this point.

There is a youtube video of the introduction.

Hope this helps.

Talk to me about the Ariellah DVD. I'm sure I'll buy it, but what does it consist of, mostly?

I finally broke down and ordered this DVD, since Ariellah is coming to Jackson for a workshop in February.

Reached my goal November 2009!

Weight Watchers worked for me and now I work for Weight Watchers.

If you are looking for video's really aimed at working out....anything from Veena and Neena I have found to be great workouts with a lot of cardio infused into the moves. You will be outta breath after these. lol

I love the Goddess Workout Series as well....much more of full step by step dance routine and meditation.

Nourhan Sharif's Introduction to Belly Dance Technique is excellent for breaking down various movements. She is scary to take a workshop from, but she is very good at teaching correct technique.

I have plugged this one a shameless amount, but my hero, Aziza's Practice Companion is a superb DVD- the shimmy section is still kicking my rear.

I am taking your advice Amandaraqs and ordering Jenna's Bellydance Basics. I can always use another DVD in my collection (much to my husband's dismay:)

I would like to recommend a DVD series, the Jamila Salimpour Archive Series. It was filmed in the 80's with Suhaila teaching it. There are 4 volumes to the series and those 4 volumes are just a virtual encyclopedia of bellydance movements, from the old school.

Now, tribal and tribal fusion borrow A LOT from the old school movement vocabulary, and Jamila is sort of considered the godmother of tribal in the US, so I can recommend these DVDs to anybody, no matter what their personal dance style is.

They aren't something you just whip through -- you really have to spend some time with them, but they're an amazing resource. You can get them from Suhaila's website.

I also like the Delilah 3-volume instructional series, although she doesn't break down the movements as much as other teachers I haven't seen her new stuff yet.

And the best intro to bellydance DVD right now (in my opinion) is Jenna's Bellydance Basics and Beyond. It's actually very long and contains SO much info that you almost can't afford NOT to buy it!

I do a lot of video education with my students and for myself. I think if you're a visual learner you can do great things with videos.

So far it looks pretty good. She breaks moves down from the front side and back which is helpful but it would have been better if she did the moves in front of a mirror.

I'm not very advanced so it did introduce me to a few new things. I also love to learn the Arabic names of the moves and how to make my dancing look less western, she does a pretty good job of doing that.

Overall, I think its worth adding to one's collection, esp. if you are an Ansuya fan like me! It was 27.00 on Amazon.
