Hi everyone,

Here are a few links I like that haven't already been mentioned:

Leyla Jouvana's 21 Shimmies and 1001 Variations: http://www.amazon.com/Learn-Shimmies-Varia
tions-Belly-Instruction/dp/B000ERAPGI

IMO it really is the best instructional DVD for shimmies. Plus she is accompanied by a live drummer (her husband Roland).

I have this one and love it. When i did a search for this DVD to link it to you, I discovered she has another DVD out too:
http://www.maqam.com/store/p/3203-More-S
himmies-and-1000s-of-Variations.html

My birthday is coming up - I think I know what I'm putting on my wish list!

Shameless plug, since this is my site: If you are in North Carolina, visit http://www.ncbellydance.org for a list of instructors, performers, etc. The links page also has several links to dancers in nearby states (SC, VA, GA, TN) and worldwide.

For beginner instruction, I still favor an oldie but a goodie: Bellydance: The Sensuous Workout with Shamira. This is what I used as a supplement to my bellydance classes 9 years ago or so, and I think she does an excellent job at breaking down the moves clearly. Plus if you are a Star Trek: TNG fan, you will enjoy her video at the end, which is hilarious.
http://www.amazon.com/Bellydancing-Sensu
ous-Workout-Shamira/dp/B0001YJEWU

For advanced instruction, I really like Ranya Renee's videos: http://ranya.net/shop/
I have her Modern Oriental and her Baladi DVDs and they are top-notch.

Hope that helps! :)

@DEMONANGEL Thanks so much for posting these links. I created a list on my youtube page with them and I will use these to start to practice. I am new to bellydance so this is great! Thanks!

With the male belly-dancers, judging by what I saw on YouTube, a lot of them use the feminine style. The link to what I saw a couple of years ago is no longer valid, but it really was more like a strip-show, rather than actual dancing - similar to how people used to think of female belly-dancing! I'm not saying that ALL male BD's are like that, though! In fact, here's a link to one that actually seems to do a pretty good job, but still has a lot of the feminine aspects to it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c29HV9aFCaM

To me, the men should be doing stronger, larger movements that emphasize strength and power. Maybe the costume should look like the Sultan's guard? Flowing pants, open-front vest, and (don't know the name of it, but the headpiece that's a large piece of fabric draped over the head & held in place by a band around the head)? Perhaps some vibrant sword- or fire poi-dancing?

quick question for those who have been doing this a while:

can you recommend a dvd that contains drills? ie figure 8's, camel walk, snake arms, belly rolls etc?

"If you are grouchy, irritable, or just plain mean, there will be a $10 charge just for putting up with you."

They say the average woman is a size 14 - who wants to be below average??!! ;^)

Sorry guys I have to defend the male belly dancer for a moment! We live in a different culture here in America where male "belly dance" (and I use that term loosely because most other cultures use Oriental Dance, Turkish Dance or something similar instead of the all incompasing Belly Dance) anyway in many of these other cultures men dance just as much if not more than the women do. BUT, and it is a big but, thier dance attitude, posture, choreography, expressions and costuming is very different than it is for women. Women are graceful and flowing and light on their feet. Men are protective, in control. Look at this website and you can get an idea of the differences between male and female belly dance.

http://www.bdancer.com/Masculine.html

Give 'em a chance ladies! There are some men out there making more money at this than we are! Ok, I'm off my soapbox now.

Well good luck finding something like that...I feel that the "fusion" of bellydance is still evolving and will continue to for a while yet...first off it is becoming more and more popular...second americans love all forms of dance...beings how we are a nation filled with every ethnic background you can think of (and then some) emoticon so the "fusing" of bellydance and all the different forms of dance is really never ending...and how much fun is that for us!!!

Is there a good site that describes the different styles of bellydance? I'm a bit confused over what people are talking about when it comes to styles, although I understand the basic difference between cabaret and tribal. But when people start talking about different fusions, Turkish, and others, I feel a bit lost.

The Shimmy show looks good, but it's on at 6:30 am here, and I don't have a DVR!!! I also don't have $50 to purchase the DVD's, either!

Ah, well...

Also, I looked at the earlier post about a male belly-dancer! I don't think it's really belly-dancing he's doing! It's WAY too athletic-based, not graceful. He looks like he's working out, or posing, not dancing! He looks more like a male stripper than a real belly-dancer! UUUGH!!!

The series is made in Canada, but they use a movement vocabulary that I recogize, but can't remember where from!! Like, "ethnic shimmy" and the Turkish bump.

I WANT some of their belts -- aren't they awesome?? There's a costumer credit given, but the name wasn't familiar. I wonder if the costumer made all their stuff. It's a very unique look.

It seems to be mostly Egyptian cabaret with a few other things thrown in. They'll say things like, "this is a traditional Egyptian step" or "This is a gypsy step."

What style of belly dancing is done on Shimmy? It doesn't seem similar to the dancing in my class at all.

You know the kind -- it's ONLY bellydance if it conforms to MY specific specifications!!!

(insert eye-rolling icon here)

But some of the foreign dancers there are quite knowledgable about regional styles.

I guess I'm just not too open minded about male belly dancers because every time I see a guy belly dance I just think, ewwww.

A great place to view videos before you decide: http://www.orientaldance.tv/
Tribe: www.tribe.net
Shira's plethora of information: www.shira.net
Tons of videos available: www.youtube.com

Okay, the first resource to check out for belly dance anything is http://www.shira.net/. Her website has advice on pretty much anything you need to know.
For costuming advice, join Costumers_Notes, a Yahoo group owned by Dawn Davina Devine, author of a few of the best belly dance costuming books. She really doesn't peddle her books on the group very frequently (a huge plus), but they are mentioned by others quite a bit (because they really are worth a look). http://groups.yahoo.com/group/costumers_no
tes/
If you are a plus sized dancer and you need a place to talk about specific plus sized issues (other than here), another great Yahoo group is bigbeautifulbellydancers: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bigbeautiful
bellydancers/
All of these websites have helped me during some really challenging dance times. Of course, this group is another one of the great places to get information!
Now, if you're looking for a dance instructor in your area, the very best way to find the locals is to go to your favorite search engine and type in belly dance and the name of your city, something like this: belly dance and salt Lake City, UT.
