In my area, there are a number of doctors promoting drinking purple grape juice and pomegranate juice for cholesterol. They prefer the actual fruit. We have a freezer part full of blueberries, because we picked our own last summer.

The book I read said that kidney damage was found in high doses of the Slo-Niacin. Research wasn't finding a problem with the short acting Niacin. It suggested that kidney function test be done and then periodically. It advised against doing it without a doctor's direction. My doctor is recommending it. I am taking Slo-Niacin in the morning. Soon, I plan to add a short acting dose with supper. Actually, I can't find it in the drug store. I have used it before. I may have to shop out of town. I live in a pretty rural area.

Hi. The Cholesterol Down book does not mention niacin much except when it is found in natural foods like whole grains and beans. It does briefly mention that it has been know to cause kidney-related problems when taken for cholesterol. As far as colored fruits and veggies, I know that they are excellent and should be eaten daily for the intense antioxidant effects and vitamins but nothing regarding cholesterol lowering. I make sure I have a glass of red wine a night and plenty of vibrant fruits and vegetables such as blueberries and other berries, beets, sweet colored peppers, purple cabbage in salads, canteloupe, pomegranate, orange sweet potatoes and winter squash...etc. The bolder the colors the better, but I think it is just for the vitamins and antioxidants, not necessarily any cholesterol lowering effect....

Does this book say anything about taking Niacin?
What about eating bold colored fruit, especially berries?

Robyn, I really need to do squats but in the past I have HATED them. I notice on your Sparks page that you do squats. Can you give me some ideas to get going or perhaps some squats that I won't hate? I know that if they bother me then that is a sign that that is probably the area that I need to improve on and I am willing but need some place to get started. Right now I am walking/jogging 50 minutes a day and I try to do it 6-7 days a week. It is really helping me in my weight loss. I also am small boned and just over 5'3". After giving birth to my 2 kids in my mid 30s, I was 112. I would be happy to be 118/120 at my age. I used to run 5 miles a day in my 30s so I just love running and hope to get back to that. I am 52 though and in great health so even though my husband says, "walking is great exercise, why do you need to run", there is a point when the brisk walking kind of drives you crazy and you need to jog/run, ya know?

I started at 138 on March 1. I am 5'2" but I am small boned. I weighed 97 when I got pregnant with my first child and I was not too skinny. I know that is unrealistic, but I do want to get to 108. You can check out my spark page to see my progress. I went through a few plateaus, I was at 120 for over a month and now I have been 113 for two months. I hoping to break throug this plateau soon and lose those last 5 lbs. before the holidays get here. I know what you mean about taking so may pills, that why I was asking about the chews. I am going to check them out. You are doing great also with your weight loss. I hope this cholesterol down works for you as well as it did for me.

Great job, Robyn! The chews are only available online. I found them at Amazon.com I like them because they are portable and I already take so many supplements that swallowing another pill (Cholestoff, etc.) would make me puke I think. I am taking multiple vitamin, Omega-3 Fish oil, calcium/magnesium, an herbal combination for hot flashes. How long did it take you to get to 113 and how tall are you if you don't mind my asking. I'm 5'3" and my goal is around 115. Right now I am 140 and coming from 163. Again, great job! emoticon

Good luck to you! This worked well for me as my cholesterol count went from 255 to 191 in 2 months. I use Cholestoff instead of the chews. I never heard of the chews. I am going to look at them next time i'm at the store. With Cholestoff you take two tabs in morning and two at night. I was also obsessive the first two months. My doctor is having me check in again around December 1 to see if I can stick with it. Good luck!

Hi All! I have read Cholesterol Down and I am diligently doing everything on the list. I am obsessive because I want to get off of Lipitor. The only other piece of the puzzle is to get my plant sterols and stanols I have ordered Benecol Chews from Amazon.com. I will be having blood work with my annual in December and will let you guys know what happens. Much of the food list I already ate but had to add a few and really started exercising and losing weight. I am 20 pounds from my goal and I am trying to exercise aerobically for 45 min to 1 hour a day. Wish me luck! I will keep everyone informed One of my favorite snacks is a handful of almonds and a crisp fall apple (and they are both on the list!) Anybody else try the Benecol Chews?

Woo hoo! I am so excited. I went to the dr today after being off my cholesterol medicine for two months. It was giving me severe muscle pains. I put myself on a special diet that I learned about from a book called Cholesterol Down where you eat certian food and take certain vitamins every day. My cholesterol was 255 and now it is 191! My dr was really impressed. He wants to check me again in three months to see if I can stick with it. I can because I don't want to go back on the medication and I don't want to die young because of high cholesterol. Let me know if anyone wants more info on this diet. I highly recommend it, but as always, check with your dr before going off medication or trying a new diet. Thanks to everyone for their past support.

Goodmorning!

Saw your post. My dad ate beans everyday, didn't eat red meat and he was never sick except for a cold every now and then. I guess the idea is... we should try to eat natural foods.
It's cold in Florida this morning... 47

My bad cholesterol was 160 when last checked. Today it is 140. I guess I am doing something right. They also upped my thyroid medication.

I just read this book. Except for the supplements, I have pretty much been following a diet like the one she recommends. I regularly eat Cheerios, apples, beans, salmon and whole grains. (And of course no red meat, cheese, butter or eggs. Very little dairy, white flour or sugar). I use Smart Balance products for Omega-3 and plant sterols. Nuts on occasion - high calories! I exercise 40 minutes daily. In spite of all those efforts my LDL and total Cholesterol have increased. :(

Based on her recommendation, I will make sure to continue eating most of those food items daily, and I'm adding flax seed and garlic supplements. I'm gonna wait on the soy and Metamucil. With all the fiber I'm already getting with oats, beans, whole grains and flax I don't want to shock my system! As for the nuts, I will eat a handful for a snack once in a while, but I am balancing it against the fact that I need to lose weight. I'm counting on weight loss to alleviate some of the problem so that will hopefully give me a point in my favor against not eating all the almonds she recommends.

(Oh yeah, I also started Promise Activ Super shots with Omega-3 and sterols.)

It all sounds like a good plan. I'm gonna get tested again at the beginning of the year.

I have the CHOLESTROL DOWN book. I am trying to work the program ..I go the end of the month for check up. Hope to see GOOD results of the method they suggest. It is pretty clear that it is better than drugs. Tried statin for 2 months and was in so much pain. I told the DR NO MORE. I would not be a cripple due to a drug... Now going natural.. Looking for positive feed back.

I will definitely try those and see if it helps, I go back and get rechecked in about 2 months. Keep me posted on how everyone does and what works. I really appreciate it.

I've never read it. But I recently found out that green tea helps to lower cholesterol. IT also has 1/2 the caffeine than black tea and doesn't dehydrate you like the caffeine in coffee. I love the Lipton Diet Green Tea they sell in stores. I've pretty much stopped drinking soda completely and stick to water and green tea.

All of what was listed is what my nutritionist told me to take. She also said pulpy fruits like oranges and grapefruits help as well. She also told me to take Cholesteroff, or something like that. I have it, but I'm taking fish oil instead. She said to get the plant sterols to use Smart Balance products, which replace butter and it tastes great. I can't tell the difference. She also said to use olive oil and stay away from trans fats (even though a package says "trans fat free" to read the ingredients. Partially hydrogenated soybean oil is trans fat so read the ingredients list.

I really liked the book. I hope it works. I dont have exact amounts here for each item but I will give you the basics. I got my library to purchase it for me. You are suppossed to have these daily.

Oatmeal or oat bran
Apple - 1
Flaxseed- ground or whole
Almonds or almond butter
Garlic
Beans - 1/2 cup
Exercise - 30 minutes daily
Metamucil
Plant sterols
Soy

The book said that this will big time lower your cholesterol. More than just using meds.

Has anyone ever read the book called "Cholesterol Down" it has 10 different foods/supplements that you add daily and its suppossed to make a big drop in your cholesterol.

I was just wondering if anyone used this plan and if it did make a difference.
