It sounds like your doctor isn't keeping up with his studies. I've met a lot of doctors lately, thanks to a 'nice little hospital trip.' While at Hackensack Hospital and again at Valley hospital and 2 other doctors on the outside. Niacin & Garlic were on high reguards. You'd also have to make dietary changes too.

Without change there is no growth & BOY! Do I need to change!

Thanks for the good tips. I'm doing three months of lifestyle changes before testing again as I'm right on the edge of doctor wanting me to go on statins. The book recommendation sounds great - I'm definitely going to check it out.

Hi all! Yes, finally feeling like I'm over that nasty illness.

I also found a yummy cereal - Trader Joe's Organic Golden Flax. It has whole and ground golden flax seed in it, and it's very tasty! Plus - it contains no cholesterol!

I've been known to sprinkle tablespoons of flax seed on mashed potatoes, yogurt, even ice cream! I just like the texture, both the fresh crunchiness and the softened jelliness.

I'm adding plant sterols when I eat a meal with cholesterol. And feeling better means trying to get more active. With fibromyalgia, I have to be cautious starting out so I don't overdo and end up exhausted or ill.

Strangely, all I am craving right now is fresh fruit and water. I like it!

Hi TROPEZIENNE - glad to meet another newbie. I hear so many folks mention "Cholesterol Down" - I am going to get it from the library.

I think that the Sparkspeople is an awesome site.

I have two months until I get my numbers checked again.

I can't lose 100 pounds....but, maybe I can lose five pounds twenty times.

Hello Storylady - I'm very new to this site and this forum as well. I've found it useful so far - especially for guiding me to "Cholesterol Down" which increased my undrestanding of cholesterol by 100%. This is the oly team I've joined - there were so many to choose from, but I'd like to get to know people and adhering to one group seems the best way.

Hi BC - how are you feeling today ? Smashy1 gave you some good advice, I would second all that she said and put my virtual arm around you in support emoticon Let us know how you are doing.

HI...so glad to have found this site. My triglycerides were 504 in September and Cholesterol at 210. I will have to go on a Triglyceride medicine if I don't get them down.

I've been takang fish oil, niacin, throwing flax seed in everything I can, mulitvitamin and eating a low fat and cholesterol diet. I hope it's enough.

Thanks.

Hi BCGROTE - thanks for passing on your doctor's advice. I read something similar on www.flaxseedshop.com - "You can eat whole flax seed but you need to chew them good to break them up. Your stomach will not dissolve whole flax seeds and many of them will come out in your stools. Chew about a tablespoon in the morning. Then drink 8 oz of water. Make sure if you chew flax seeds that you drink water since the seed expand and become gelatinous."

So I might try that, and also soaking them as you do for a bit of variety - I still haven't got a suitable mill. Flaxseed mills and coffee grinders are a bit beyond budget this month - I'm saving for the garlic supplements and the psyllium.

My cholesterol was 329 and my trigyceride 248 at the end of September. Like you I want to avoid sterols and so I'm not having another test done until the end of December (ie: 3 months between tests) - during which time I'll adhere as much as possible to the "Cholesterol Down" method. Let's compare notes again then ?

Futher to my idea of copying the checklist and pasting a copy into each page of my agenda - I had two consecutive days last week when I only ticked three or four of the boxes (awful weather = no 30 minute walk + bad cold = snacking) - but having a fresh checklist for yesterday, once the sun came out and my cold had gone, got me back on track straight away. Making the challenge a daily measure makes it much more realistic (for me.

My therapist says to take whole flaxseed in a glass, like 2 tablespoons, then a handful of raisins or other dried berry, then add water to cover. Wait a little while, the water will get absorbed, and you will have a gelatinous fruity....thing to add to food or eat by spoonfuls! She recommended the whole flax to add fiber to my diet.

I was taking niacin, but I would get a flush so bad that I spent my evenings crying in the shower, waiting for relief. It did lower my overall to 185, but the agony was not worth it!

Now I take a nice Omega 3 fish oil from Trader Joe's, but my annual blood test showed I am back up to 240!! I really don't want to go on statins. I'm certain losing weight will help a little...

Great idea to copy that list onto a word.doc and have available at hand. I think I will do the same. I have found "Cholesterol Down" the most simple, easy to use book available. Clearly explains what to expect when you follow the plan. I try to, but that flax seed is still a challenge. For some reason I just can't seem to adapt to it.

Hi Dreamweaver - thanks for the storage idea. I shall do that. I'm more or less doing everything that "Cholesterol Down" recommends - just got to wait until next month to buy the garlic supplements and the metamucil (I'm going to see if my doctor will prescribe - some supplement and alternatove medicines are eligible for prescription status here in France).

Another thing I did was to copy out the check list onto a word .doc - I managed to get 8 per A4 sheet, photocopied a few sheets and stuck on onto each page of my agenda. It has helped me to be more accurate with the balance of what I've had each day.

Just yesterday, I found ground flax seeds in the "natural" food section (where the vitamins are) in my local Fred Meyer store. I will try them on my oatmeal tomorrow.

Once you grind your seeds, keep them in the fridge or freezer and it'll stay fresher longer. A lot of groceries are carrying the ground now. Check in the baking section.

I found that I could "tolerate" the METAMUCIL a lot better than the flax seeds.. It is made from Psyllium husks and also was recommended in Cholesterol Down. I have not been diligent in taking as recommended, but I do manage to get in 1 dose a day. I think you are supposed to build up to
6 grams a day which I have not been able to do..It is a challenge for me to add the FLAX.... emoticon

Hi Cemason - thanks for your response. Tried the neighbours, they didn't have a grinder but we did end up having a glass of wine and a natter, so that was a great result !

I'm going to beg, borrow or steal a grinder today. Maybe even splash out on one. If you grind enough for a week does it stay fresh enough? I think that I read somewhere that once ground up the flax goes off pretty quickly?

Have a great weekend wherever you are. It's warm here in the south of France so we're off to the market then for a play on the beach.

Instead of borrowing a cup of sugar, maybe you have a neighbor that has a small coffee grinder you could use. It only takes a few seconds to grind the flax seed. And the coffee grinders wipe clean with a damp cloth (unplug first). Grind enough for the week. What I have read is that the color of the flax seed is only important if you are trying to hide it in foods and that you can't get the benefits from the seed unless it is ground. I guess it would just pass through. I've just taken to eating my flax meal on a spoon and drink water. I acquired a tast over the past couple of weeks! Not up to more than 10 grams yet.

For fiber I have been using packaged Benefiber powder. It is made from wheat, but used to be made from psyllium (sp?). Maybe that is more economical? Price of package seems expensive, but it lasts a long time for me.

Hello people - I finally received my copy of "Cholesterol Down" and have learned so much from it. I have converred easily to 8 of the 10 steps - I've been a vegetarian for 30 years so I was half-way there. I have yet to get the one-a-day garlic supplements (I do use garlic in cooking - I live in France, it's de rigeur) and I have yet to get the metamucil/psyllium husks. I found them in the local bio-shop but can't afford them this month, I'm going to look on the internet for a better price but would prefer to use/support the shop.

Re: Linseeds/flax. I could only get whole, dark linseeds. I've tried crushing them between spoons as I don't have a grinder. Are the whole linseeds of no nutritional value at all? If not, I'll wait until I've got a grinder. I was wondering if a pepper mill would do the job, although that would make it hard to measure intake.

Finally - I love the recipes at the back of the book. I can easily adapt those with chicken and will eat fish occasionally. I can't face eating tuna - all those dolphins trapped in tuna nets.....

Well, I hope that you are all feeling well today - and thank you to the person who brought this book to my attention.

PS: I doin' a lot more pooin' with the changes in my diet - :) that's good I suppose ?

Hi Everyone,

In the book, "Cholesterol Down," the author recommends Cholest Off. Is anyone using it or has used it? I would like to know if it works on the liver or just prevents the body from absorbing cholesterol in food.

I will appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks, Roberta

Most definitely the higher your HDL the better!!!

I put two tablespoons of ground flaxseed in a large glass (that holds 3 measuring cups of liquid) and fill it with water. I prepare it at night and in the morning drink the flaxseed and water.

its hard for me to undertand the USA numebrs as in the UK they are different! We aim for a cholesterol of 4.5 and below; my cholesterol was 4.2 in June, so all was OK - the only reason I am now worried is that the hospital said that I had a slightly raised liver function when I was in A&E on Monday and that could be a raised Cholesterol level - bloods on Monday 15th and results porbably a week later - I'll keep you posted!

Maybe it was the total cholesterol and LDLs that were high. Or triglycerides and LDLs. They usually want those numbers lowered. My triglycerides went down after I starting eating better and lost weight. If you can't find your papers, or if you are still confused after you find them, call and ask to speak to a nurse who can explain the results to you. They usually are happy to do that.

not knowing your numbers I cn't sy but hdl is also called the good cholesterol because it does not cause placque in your arteries while ld does usually the more hdl you have the less ldl. So I would suggest you go to the wellness pages and play the video on cholesterol put out by harvard medical school.

Hi Everyone,

I joined this team just so I could share this info. After 3 months of eating high fiber & low saturated fats, I have lowered my cholesterol. However, it is not low enough. I have a new endocrinologist who is pretty tough on me. I still refused to take meds, so she told me to take:

1 Tbl. of liquid fish oil in the a.m. &
1 Tbl. of liquid Flax oil in the p.m.

The fish oil she told me to take is TWINLAB Emulsifified Omega-3 Fish Oil (1003mg EPA & 669mg DHA)

The flax oil is BARLEAN'S ORGANIC OILS Flax Oil 100% Organic Liquid (6200mg Omega-3, 1810mg Omega-6, 2040mg Omega-9 & 10-27mg Lignan SDG)

She told me they would taste nasty & they do! The fish oil is better than the flax oil. I have tried the flax oil in apple sauce & yogurt. That helps a little, but I usually just swallow it straight with the knowledge that I am doing something good for myself.

I purchased these at the local health food store, the flax oil must be refrigerated. I have been taking them for 2 weeks now. I have not noticed any adverse reactions. I will be tested again in Dec & will post my updates.

Lisa :)

Really? It's ok for HLD to be over the sugested range? The nurse made it seem bad. She started asking me all the dietary questions and excersize habits. She scared the crap out of me!!! I guess I dont need to be in this group if it is a good thing though. Maybe my nurse just got confused.

I copied this from another thread... It is a low carb recipe but for anyone wanting to incorperate flax into their diet it is pretty tasty-like a bran muffin. If you cook it too long it can get a little dry. Sometimes I add no sugar pancake syrup to it.

Muffins in a minute

1 egg
1 tsp olive oil or butter
1 tsp cinnimon
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 spenda packet (I used 1 in it and one on top of it with some extra butter--for moistness)
1/4 c flax seed meal

1. Wisk oil and egg
2. Stir dry ingredients together
3. Mix wet with dry, mix well.
4. Spray mug/small bowl with nonstick spray.
5. Microwave until done (receipe said 1 minute) mine is done in 40 seconds. Don't overcook--not pretty when this happens...underdone isn't good either.
6. I figured out the muffin comes out of the bowl(and actually looks like a bran muffin) by I like to eat it out of my cup.

falxseed can be added to lots of foods I put them in my pancakes but most often I take capsules of 1200 mg each and two capsules fish oil at 1200mg each very inexpensive way to get the benefits when you don't want to put the actual seed in a meal. I also use wheat germ and oat bran..To tell you the truth I take these ,not to lower my cholesterol as they don't work for me I ingest very little cholesterol and most of that is plant sterols but my liver makes it anyway so my ldl is borderline high. Am using niacin 1500mgs and will have to wait until november blood test to see if it is effective or if I need a statin drug

Thanks for the info on flax. I just added some to my soup and it wasn't bad, but that was only 5 grams of flax which is about 1/2 Tablespoon. I have to find more ways to work the flax into my foods. I've found some articles online that say 10 grams twice a day is helpful, but that seems like a lot to work in. I can't even imagine eating 6 Tbsp a day, but I guess that means it is ok to have that much.
105 calories for 2 Tbsp out of my 1200-1500 calories per day? Maybe. It definately helps with the constipation that my supplemental iron pill causes. And it is supposed to be healthy for a lot of things.
If anyone has suggestions of how they eat their flax meal I would appreciate it. Haven't had blood work up for Cholesterol since I started eating flax--I hope it is working.

For your question about HDLs, HIGHer than normal IS GOOD. Exercise is supposed to raise HDLs. You are in great shape if you HDLs are higher than normal! HDL stands for High Density Lipoproteins. "High levels are associated with a decreased risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease." (from American Heritage Dictionary online) way to go

I know that it is beneficial to take up to six Tablespoons of flax everyday. I maybe get two but It is supposed to be very good for you.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to lower HDL? My LDL is good but my HDL is about 5 points to high. 95. Any ideas?

About whether or not they work: I take a high-quality Omega-3 supplement, along with a multivitamin and other supplements. I didn't tell my doctor when I quit taking my Rx meds (I had three different ones for cholesterol and triglycerides) and switched to EFAs and increased fiber (oatmeal instead of egg breakfasts). Six months later I requested all my medical records, including lab results. I would have to double check, but my recollection is that the natural products were working at least as well, if not better. Plus, I felt great - no more side effects. I started losing weight when I cut these Rx meds out too - not even trying, just wanted to be healthy.

I've been told by my nurse practitioner to take flax. Since I don't eat gelatin, I'm using flax seed that I grind myself. Apparently, she is used to people taking flax in some soft of pill form because when I asked how much to take she said, see what it says on the package.
Anyone know how much flax meal is a good amount to eat each day?
Anyone taking red rice yeast? She suggested that also, but again can't find it without the gelatin capsules.

plant sterols are availible through endurance products where I get my niacin. For it to work you must have at least 1 gram per day. i buy the pills from www.endur.com and I use them especially before eating eggs out at the resteraunt. They block the absorbance of cholesterol by fooling the liver into thinking that they are animal cholesterol. As the liver can only absorb so much the pill blocks the uptake of cholesterol. but remember your liver does produce it on its own thats why the niacin or statin drugs

I don't know what you asked your doctor about but niacin is a legitiment remedy for high cholesterol and is also used as an anti depressent. The statin drugs are more powerful but they also offer higher risks as well as costs. MY doctor is well aware of them and has told me I can take up to 2000mg of niacin. also a friend of mine who doesn't want to take prescription drugs is taking niacin per doctor's order (1500Mg). I went from 229 ldl to 142 using niacin and phytosterols which also work and are recognized by the fda as a lowerer of cholesterol and is the ingredient used in benecol and take charge margerine and heart wise minute maid orange juice

One big question though about these remedies. Do they actually work? If so, how long before you notice results?
I was told by my doctor and practise nurse that none of them are worth taking.
I also need something to keep my skin, especially lower legs, from going so dry. A condition of my diabetes

I've heard that some people garlic helps and some not. I love garlic and use it often when cooking.

I've heard that garlic is good for lowering cholestrol so I got some of those already peeled cloves of garlic at the store and I'm really going to try to use some every day

I've been seeing more products at the store with plant sterols like the PromiseActiv Supershots. These actually taste pretty good. It looks like there has been a good amount of study on plant sterols showing the ability to lower bad cholesterol. Is there a better way to get the benefit of them besides this product or milk or juice with the plant sterols in them?
