I have been using the ground flaxseed for a month. Every morning I put a bit in my oatmeal with walnuts and craisins. I also make fresh muffins to have - I add a Tablespoon or two to those recipes. I am hoping to lower my cholesterol without using any medications.

My husband's heart doctor told him to use the Golden Flax seed, and to grind it in a coffee grinder. I bought a coffee grinder from my local Wal-Mart store, you want it to be able to grind the seeds on fine setting. After it's ground, it needs to be stored in the fridge. You start adding it to yogurt, oatmeal, cereal, whatever you want, and you can make recipes using the flax. It has already lowered his cholesterol level. Some of his medication makes him constipated, but by using the flax in his diet, that's no longer a problem.

Yes, the coffee grindes works just fine. Also, you may add the flax seed to a shake in a blender and they also grind very well.

I bought some whole flax seed and was instructed to put them in a grinder or they wouldn't digest. I think a coffee grinder would work. I never did try it though. emoticon

When you say you've "been doing the apple cider vinegar"- what do you mean by that?
Do you take a tablespoon? When? How often? With what?
Please inform me, I am ignorant about this.

My Dr, Chiropractor, and Cardiologist all agree on fish oil.

The flax seed chat got me inspired. First soak beans so tomorrow . Then boneless chicken brest, tvp, brown rice in chicken broth, celery, pried parsley, roasted garlic, sweat basel, onion, fresh mushrooms I got at the farmers market Wed. Once that is cooked then grind walnuts flax, and chia seeds may be frozen organic veggies

After weight loss surgery by my wife, she became lactose intolerance. Therefore we switch to soy milk. We have also try other types of lactose free milk. We really enjoy almond milk so much better taste than skim milk and 60 calories for unsweetened. Also just recently try flax milk unsweetened with only have 25 calories. I use it in my shakology. The shakology is thicker and creamy than with water.

If they are whole flaxseeds, you don't have to put them in the fridge. I just keep mine on the shelf. If they are ground, however, they have to be refrigerated because they will go rancid quickly .. I never buy the ground cause I'm never sure how fresh they are. Just use the blender to grind up your flaxseeds.

Be sure you grind the flaxseed in your blender before using it! Otherwise, they say that you don't get much benefit. And start slowly. I take 2 tablespoons and grind it and put it on my cereal in the morning but I had to start slowly because it is a little irritating on the stomach if you start it all at once.
Two tablespoons also adds up to 130 calories so you have to calculate this into your daily calories. I haven't been back to the doctor yet for a cholesterol check but I am banking on this flaxseed being a good alternative to taking a statin drug.
Hope this helps!

I was surprised to discover how fast and easy it was to grind my own flax seeds. I used a clean coffee grinder and it took just a few seconds. That way my ground flax is freshest and most nutritious - or so I have been told.

Also whole flax seeds are cheaper than pre-ground.

I eat 4 tablespoons of MILLED flax seeds. i do not eat them without grinding them, They are a good laxative but we do not digest them, they just pass through. Grinding allows us to get the nutrients. Never heat the seeds that way the nutrients are destroyed. I am too cheap to buy nutritious food whose nutrients are destroyed . Enjoy your Flax. look it up and READ all about it, There are some great sites to get educated with. Pat in Maine.

I am type 2 diabetic I was on meds now I am off meds. I usually have high BS at 3.0am. Eating protein at night helps to lower the BS so I began eating 1oz of Cheddar Cheese at bedtime. It worked like a charm. My Dr then diagnosed elevated cholesterol and Triglycerides. I have found a new night time snack which is also my daily breakfast unless I feel like a change but I rarely do that. I use oat bran 1/4 cup. 1/2 cup water and a small banana or half a large one cut up in the oatbran. Micrwave on high 2 minutes. Then I add 1/4 cup cottage cheese and 2 Tablespoons milled flax seed, Stir it fast and it gets creamy. Its a big serving to look at and it satisfies for hours. Protein, potassium and grain along with )Omega#3. I have not found a better breakfast and night time snack. Pat in Maine.

I love putting ground flaxseed (usually 2-3 tbsp) on top of my organic plain greek yogurt (Oikos is my favorite) along with some mixed berries. For me, it's the perfect post-workout snack since it combines protein and carbs to fuel my muscles.

I store flax seeds in the fridge - I grind what and when I need - usually a tablespoon-. I've had mine in the fridge for several months, and have not had a problem w/it. Not sure about storing it in a pantry!!!

Just found this article about flax seed - including storage - here's the link to the article

I have some flax seeds that has been stored in my pantry from 3 months ago. Is it still good? Or should I go out and buy more?

Thanks for the heads up. I think that my problem goes a little deeper, the danger time is late ate night, it doesn't have to be just ice cream, it could be anything that I find around the house.I seem to hold it together for while, but the more I think about it, off I go to find something to eat. All thins probably doesn't fit into the flax seed meal topic unless flax seed changes my urges.

I am new here so not sure if I am doing this correctly but CSTEWART that is one huge bad habit you have going on. I too was doing the same thing, you have to stop the habit, it is easier than you think to do so. If you "have" to have ice cream get the Laughing Cow fudge bars or one of the others they have or switch to fruits. Slowly eat a handful of grapes, something like that. Best bet is to break the habit and quit buying ice cream, if it's not there you can't eat it!

Reading all postings and got helpful advice. emoticon I love flax lots, both the seed and flour. My sister-in-law got me started on it several years ago. She is a totally natural and organic eater. I have learned so much from her and from all of you. Let's all have a great weekend and Mother's Day!!!

I have been eating oatmeal for breakfast for awhile now and add 2 tbsp of ground flax seed meal , raisins, 1/3 cup of dry skim milk and sometimes dried cranberries to it. I use the regular oatmeal and cook it up in the microwave. Well it keeps me full until lunch time. My eating gets out of hand at night, watching TV and eating ice cream. They don't quite balance etch other out, soooo
