I really have no clue why, but I could guess that it may be the antioxidant vitamin C and bioflavinoids...? Doesn't work as well if the peel isn't included...

Do you know why the lemon tea works? I used to drink fresh lemonade, but haven't in a while. (sweetened w/stevia)

thanks for all the replies, I will check out some of those links. I need to get back to my fish oil. I do really well taking it if I fill my weekly pill container, but if I just rely on memory, I forget to take it most of the time. I bought a small food journal that will fit into my purse, going to start using that, and maybe that will help keep me accountable some.

All good suggestions...

You may also want to add lemon to your regimen. I got 30 points off my total lipid profile just by drinking lemon 'tea' twice a day!

Just FYI, I was told recently that what you eat only affects about 30% of your triglycerides, cholesterols, etc. The rest is exercise and heredity...

If doing everything you need to do isn't working, it's possible that medication is the only answer. Not a happy one, granted, and some of us can't take statins, which makes the risk factors way out there...

Do follow as many tips as you can. The meds are no fun, and carry their own risks...

My Dietician told me to take 2x 1000mg Capsules 3x daily. She said it needs that amount to elevate the HDL.

I'll be going in Sept. for my blood tests. I have changed from white rice to brown and whole wheat pasta. Whole grain breads and added walking. I have been taking meds and fish oil for over a year. It was time to change, so let's see if it works. By the way, I take the foish oil at night.

JANRTEACH, I have no idea what you are talking about. I do not follow a low carb plan. What plan are you referring to? I do not follow the plan the Sparkpeople provided for me. I eat lots of whole grains. I am trying to cut CALORIES. I haven't logged food that well so??? What areyou looking at?

later -

Oh, I see, you are looking at my food log. I'm bein real good today aren't I. I've been bad for so long. Have to go see the doctor and bring my food log so figured I better get with it! You haven't seen dinner yet! Maybe I should go back and do my log for yesterday. That'll shock your socks off. Gotta eat more veggies! Gees, I didn't really think people looked at those things.

later later

So you are thinking that my tris went down because you believe I am eating low carb and not because of the fish oil? I should tell you that two years ago I WAS on a no carb diet, high protein (lean), lots of veggies, oil, and my tris were at there all time high - 182. Only since adding fish and fish oil, olive oil did my tris come down. Didn't even come down just on Statins.

PUALANI1 -- Thanks for the note about fish oil. Let's face it, you appear to follow a very low carb diet. I allow myself under 120 and your plan seems even lower. Carbs, white and sticky and sweet are not good for trigs under any circumstances. You are a great example of fixing everything up.

Low carb is not for everyone though I follow a plan myself. Triglycerides are more about getting the "white" foods and sugars out of our system. Try cutting back on those and see if yours lower. Fish oil and exercise is a tremendous help too.

Fish oil will lower your triglycerides. I have added lots of fish to my diet, take fish oil capsules a few times a week, and my triglycerides plumeted to 83. I also use olive oil exclusively and have cut out butter. So could be a combo of the mono oil (olive) and fish oil.

If you can't stand the taste of fish oil (I burp them) put it in the freezer. Takes a couple days for the capsules to get really cold but you won't burp them as they don't start dissolving until they are further down in you intestines.

My doctor almost bit my head off two years ago when he wanted me to go on statins and I asked him if I could just take fish oil instead. He snapped if I needed to lower my triglycerides then go on fish oil but it won't do a thing for you ldl. And it hasn't. It is recommended for all heart patients as it makes your blood platlets less sticky.

PS Low carb diet did nothing for my numbers.
